    You guys have to understand this was Andy's act for the early part of his career. He spent hours and hours getting the Elvis down to that-- which your grandparents would say was spot on. When he did this in most venues as foreign man doing "poor impressions" it would completely bomb. In the act, he would do more than two bad ones to the point where people just thought he sucked and they paid to get in. And then he did this spot-on Elvis and blew people's minds, which is what Kaufman was all about.

    • @1USACitizen192

    • @cakins1986
      @cakins1986 6 ปีที่แล้ว +134

      It's an absolutely brilliant premise for a joke, and incredibly ballsy because it requires A) making the audience incredibly uncomfortable while intentionally bombing as "Foreign Man," but not losing them too much, and B) following up those intentionally horrible impressions with an absolutely showstopping impression. In fact, an impression wouldn't have cut it--it had to be a full-on song and dance number from an icon like Elvis, and it had to be played straight and damn near perfectly to work. Look at some of the Elvis impersonators of today--they still don't have it down quite as well as Andy did, and Elvis was still alive at this point!

      Glad you liked it.
      Unfortunately, this classic clip of Andy doing Elvis is woefully diminished by those who post this clip with Andy ONLY doing Elvis and not the entire clip of which precedes the Elvis act that is key to the entire genius of this clip.
      *Most clips on You Tube of Andy Kaufman doing Elvis Presley to near perfect impersonation, just don't get it.*
      _They'll only show him doing Elvis._
      But in reality, you must watch the entire clip,
      the full act to really appreciate the genius of his Elvis act.
      The full act includes two purposefully terrible impersonations that precede the Elvis act. First of which is of Carol O'Connor of "All in the Family" getting into his 'Meathead diatribe' against his son-in-law, Michael, and doing an embarrassingly terrible job of it in his high-pitched accented voice.
      He then tells the audience his next impersonation would be of Ed McMahon, which he again does in his high-pitched accented embarrassingly terrible
      approach.
      So, now Andy has the audience all primed up, expectation nil, not to at all expect anything worth seeing upon announcing his next act to be an impersonation of Elvis. The audience, after watching two wilted impersonations is by now inured to any claim of a genuine, right-on impersonation. He then continues to play with he audience by turning around and donning his Elvis costume.
      By then he turns around and does a tour-de-force, knocked out of the ballpark of Elvis like no one has ever seen before. The first two impersonations are necessary to see in order to lower any expectations by the audience and thus raise the audience's shock and delight when he does do his Elvis so right-on perfectly. But most clips won't show the drama of the entire clip that makes this the classic it is.
