A Macro with the digitizer left in and no speaker is like a car without wheels and a dirty windshield. A tip on the resistor is to only tin one pad and solder the resistor flat on the board and then take the other side because the solder gonna be in the way and make it harder to get the resistor in place as you have to melt both sides to not crack or damage your part. I also re-map the A and B buttons to make it much more comfortable

This is a nice way to save a broken device from a landfill. I especially like the acrylic rod to add an extra touch rather than a boring dowel. I'd really like to find a way to get a better screen in there for a Macro mod, but that's probably too tall an order.

Haven't done a GB Macro yet, but I'd also suggest the silicone mat with parts sorting built in. Helps with the sorting of screws as you go, as well as with visibility. I've done some work taking things apart on my workbench in the basement (plywood topped) and on my desk (black carbon fiber vinyl topped) and it's a lot easier to see screws on the silicone mat than either the wood.
Also it's better to solder on than directly onto a desktop. Won't accidentally burn the surface of your desk, and pieces won't slide around as easily.
I also like using a sharpie to write on the parts sorting tray so I know where things go, then you can erase it with the IPA when you're done
(left out of the recommended tools but alluded to during the tutorial)

  • @shortyboio

From what I understand, the ds only checks that power is going to the backlight to insure the top screen is connected. So, by using a resistor to bridge those 2 led pads it tricks the ds into thinking the backlight is getting power and allows the ds to turn on and function properly.
