    After nearly forty years of marriage, JOAN and JOE CASTLEMAN (Glenn Close and Jonathan Pryce) are complements. Where Joe is casual, Joan is elegant. Where Joe is vain, Joan is self-effacing. And where Joe enjoys his very public role as Great American Novelist, Joan pours her considerable intellect, grace, charm, and diplomacy into the private role of Great Man’s Wife.
    Joe is about to be awarded the Nobel Prize for his acclaimed and prolific body of work. Joe’s literary star has blazed since he and Joan first met in the late 1950’s. THE WIFE interweaves the story of the couple’s youthful passion and ambition with a portrait of a marriage, thirty-plus years later-a lifetime’s shared compromises, secrets, betrayals, and mutual love.

      You know the sad part? Just like writers who publish through houses almost never have any say about their covers or descriptions, the people making the movie generally have no control over how its marketed, including the trailer. The trailers are made by completely separate businesses and approved by the studio.

    As much as I love Keira Knightley, I find it odd that an English actress should be cast to play the role of a French writer. I'm having a hard time understanding why people are not more bothered when they watch movies set in Paris, Berlin or Rome in which everyone is speaking English.

    • @LorraFae
      @LorraFae 6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      People hate subtitles. No subtitles means larger audience. People are lazy.

    • @NotAnotherKuromi
      @NotAnotherKuromi 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Lorra Fae Agreed.
      I went to watch the second season of 3% on Netflix & it had random English voices booming out, they automatically put adio dubbing over the entire cast! I couldn't tell who any of the characters were & I wanted to here the expression from the or cast, even if I do not understand Portuguese. I want to feel immersed in the original creation. Needless to say I took the dubbing off & put subtitles back on but I would be very interested to know the statistics of what other people choose.

    • @LorraFae
      @LorraFae 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sammy Ariel I’ll always choose subtitles. In terms of films, if English people are making a film about a foreign person, it makes no sense to make it in their language - the script and the crew and director will all speak English...so unless someone is very careful to work with everyone else that speaks that language I don’t think it’ll work too well. There’s exceptions, sure, but it would make everything way more difficult, costly, etc. Just a thought.

    • @NotAnotherKuromi
      @NotAnotherKuromi 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lorra Fae Sorry maybe I should have been clearer, I was replying to your comment alone, not the op.
      I do not think English people should try & create a French film because unless there are enough french people involved it will not be accurate, similar to able bodied people trying to portray disabled people. The only way a French film could be executed well was if it was created by a majority of French people.
      I hope I have made my stance clearer.

    • @LorraFae
      @LorraFae 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @cezarcaruntu 6 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Why don't English actors play 'Hamlet' with Danish accents? Because it's fiction, you have to pretend the characters speak the local language, having a French accent would mean they spoke French with a Russian (or any other) accent.

      There was an essay in a book about Star Trek (yeah, I know) where the authors briefly talked about why do we always use possessives when we talk about love. "You're mine," or "I'm yours," etc.

    No French accents - good. It's really ridiculous when American or British actors show that they are playing foreigners by speaking English with an accent.

    • @jessikibotiki543
      @jessikibotiki543 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Aqquila89 i was just gonna say the same thing.. nothing pisses me off more then a period peice with the wrong accent.. the only thing thats worse then not changing an accent for the proper role, is when american actors with american accents change to an english accent in a french period piece or a russian period piece. I have seen that also and makes me see red.. there are very few period pieces i like with the wrong accent

    Okay.... But how about a French actress ? Was Marion Cotillard at least considered ?

    • @sansastark5810
      @sansastark5810 6 ปีที่แล้ว +67

      maybe she was considered, maybe she auditioned, and maybe she wasn't the best choice for the movie. it happens bro, there's no need to get salty for no reason :)

    • @mercygrrl
      @mercygrrl 6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Maybe she was considered and turned it down. She's married to a French screenwriter & director. It's not out of the question she didn't want to be the sole French actor to make Bleeker Street's project feel more "authentic"

    • @mercygrrl
      @mercygrrl 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You mean the Rub & Tug dustup? Colette was in the can long before Scarlett's latest public call-out. So, no, I wasn't saying that. But I can see where one would make that connection.

    • @caomhan84
      @caomhan84 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Perhaps she didn't have the shooting dates clear. That happens. Plenty of actors have to turn down roles because they have prior commitments. In any case, it doesn't matter. It's an English film and Keira is a great actress. If she can play Larisa Antipova and Anna Karenina, she can play this.

    • @agnesecemulini5360
      @agnesecemulini5360 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Hannahpauline Marion Cotillard was cast for Macbeth (Macbeth!!). She's French and did a great job anyway, so why can't Keira?
