Hi Claire ( I hope it’s the right spelling ). Experienced travelers listen to everything that is said by anyone but they would not be put off at all. They would take care as they do in their home city or town. In 2011 the riots in England reached a 15 to 20 minute drive from our house. We were there to see my parents. I just made sure none of us went out. In Paris my wife, my son and myself were tear gassed in the métro by thieves. We dealt with it and nothing was stolen. It doesn’t mean I hate Paris. I have been to Paris more times than to London for my business so this episode was just one that could have happened anywhere. Out of about 500 trips, a one time episode means nothing. Only once have I been robbed and that was in Victoria Station. I had travelled by train ( I was doing Inter rail ) from Rome to London to pick up my suit to go to a wedding that was about an hour south of Rome. I was really upset but and I learned to always take care when in any city and to be vigilant. Including in your home town of course. I wouldn’t worry about negative comments. One thing I have always hated about the Hong Kong MTR ( underground ) is, that it is heated in autumn/winter when Hong Kong has a sub tropical climate. Nobody can change that. You learn to live with it.
It is always best to live the place as it is even as a visitor. Back to Hong Kong. I used to go there 3 times per year and for 10 days so that I could live the place. A couple of days for that. Off the beaten track, I got to know a Church and it’s social club and became friends with the people. Found a pub owned by an Englishman and I always would pop in. I am still in touch with everyone there. I ate strictly Hong Kong food though to live the local life. The Immigrant community at weekends in between meals. Sunday the Church and social club. For a couple of hours.
Nice surprise to hear you today. Take care and keep up the good work.
