This breed has its origin in the province of Cordoba, in the central (Mediterranean) region of the Republic of Argentina.
Its creator was Dr. Antonio Nores Martinez, a (renowned) doctor and member of a traditional family. In 1928, his passion for dogs, perhaps a family legacy, led him to set the bases and a standard for a new dog breed which he named Dogo Argentino. His work was based upon the methodical crossbreeding of several purebreds with the old fighting dog from Cordoba, a dog which was very strong and vigorous.
After a thorough and minute character study and selection, through different generations, Dr. Nores Martinez accomplished his purpose, obtaining the first family. At the beginning it was generally considered a dog for fighting but Dr. Nores Martinez's liking for hunting led him to take the dog to one of his habitual hunting trips, where the new breed demonstrated its skills, thus becoming a key figure in all his trips. Thus it became quickly an excellent big-game hunting dog.
With the passing of time, this adaptating capacity has made this dog very versatile as regards functions; it has proved to be a noble companion and a loyal and insurmountable protector of those it loves. Its strength, tenacity, sharp sense of smell and bravery make it the best dog among those used for hunting wild boars, peccaries, pumas and other country predators which can be found in the vast and heterogeneous areas of the Argentinean territory. Its harmony, balance and its excellent athletic muscles are ideal characteristics for enduring long trips in any weather conditions and then fighting fiercely with the pursued prey.
In 1973 the breed was accepted by FCI as the first and only Argentinean breed, thanks to the great passion, work and effort of Dr. Augustin Nores Martinez, its creator's brother and successor
Breeds used to create the Dogo include: Cordoba Fighting Dog, Great Pyrenees, Irish Wolfhound, Great Dane, Boxer, Pointer, Spanish Mastiff, Old English Bulldog, Bull Terrier, Dogue de Bordeaux. And possibly more.

Beautiful dog, extremely protective. I have one of these, she doesn't let any stranger into the house, or near her family and especially the children without our permission. Great dog, great with kids, extremely loving.

crie perros dogos en una epoca , cuando tenia que vender los cachorros le entregaba un manual de unas hojas de como se cria y se cuida a estos perros para no tener problemas primero lo tenian que leer al manual y si estaban de acuardo una ves leido el manual recien les vendia algun cchorro , la mitad de los compradores no volvian , no es lo mismo criar un dogo a un caniche toy

I dont agree with circumsion but cropping the ear is actually for a reason....it makes the hearing better, more alert, and harder for them to get caught or bit
@tjbird9675 Dude, "mediterranean" means "landlocked" or "surrounded by land". That's why the Cordoba province in Argentina is mediterranean, because it's far away from the sea.
@b5150b2012 - with socialization they get a long well with other breeds. Mine lives in the same house with a Wolf Hybrid and a Stafford Shire Terrier. Crazy household around feeding time but have not had any incidents between the three at all.

@KiteSwift old comment is old, but no, mostly farmers own Dogo's. They are a great farm dog and hunting dog. Pits aren't dangerous either. It's the person, not the breed, so to call this dog in and of itself dangerous is quite ludicrous.

@kingoftroy05 actually dude dogs that have their ears cropped like pittys, dobermans ect have no hair in the ears to proctect them hence the floppy ear to guard the ear canal. Cropped ears are open to infection and disease.

@GoldenOakFarm Preserve the look of what human's wanted in the breed. The actual breed is born with ears, so it should stay that way in my opinion. :)

El dogo de campo no es igual que el dogo doméstico hay 4 veces más potencia en el dogo de campo.
hay dos variantes de dogo esta el "antiguo" que es el que resulto de todas las cruzas, el mas "agresivo". despues esta en cruza con pointer que son los mas actuales y mas "mansos". pero las diferencias son casi nulas a excepción de la convivencia entre otros perros.
iñaki santos angel el dogo argentino araucano en realidad era el PPC perro de pelea Cordobés mejorado, al prohibirse las peleas de perros no quedó mas hacerlo desaparecer.

The dogo is alright, but there is a reason why American Pitbulls are the more popular, better, and more versatile working breed and family pet. American Pitbulls have been around way longer than most breeds and have been bred and used for working, hunting, baiting, dog combat, and gladiatorial events like battling against bears and bulls before the dogo was even created. The dogo is just no comparison to a American Pitbull, even though dogos are bigger. American Pitbulls were bred as farm dogs that would help on farms and protect the farmers from livestock, especially the bulls. If the bull attacked the farmer, they would take the bull on and get it under control. This led to them being used in gladiatorial events to battle bulls, bears, and even lions.
