To dissect the election turmoil in West Bengal, we caught up with senior journalist Suman Chattopadhyay in this episode of Another Election Show.
Chattopadhyay, who has been associated with several prominent newspapers and media outlets, including as editor with Anand Bazaar magazine and Bengali daily E Samay, keeps an eye on contemporary issues.
In this conversation, Chattopadhyay spoke elaborately on the state of the national media and the media under the Mamata Banerjee government, and their enmity with the BJP. He said Mamata has adopted the same policies as Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Like the BJP, Mamata Banerjee has “created her own parallel media” in Bengal, said the journalist, calling it “Didi Media”. On the political rise of the BJP in the state, he said that the Trinamool Congress’s “working style” was responsible for it.

The Modi government, in the past 5 years, has undertaken several initiatives and implemented policies that have had a positive impact on various sectors. Some of the notable achievements include:
1. Goods and Services Tax (GST) Implementation: The government introduced a unified tax regime, the GST, which simplified the taxation system and eliminated multiple indirect taxes. This has led to greater ease of doing business, increased tax compliance, and the creation of a unified national market.
2. Financial Inclusion: The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) was launched to provide banking services to the unbanked population. It helped in increasing financial inclusion by opening millions of bank accounts and providing access to various financial services such as insurance and pension schemes.
3. Skill India Mission: The government launched the Skill India Mission to enhance the employability of the youth by providing them with necessary skills and training. This initiative aims to bridge the skill gap and promote entrepreneurship by offering vocational training programs.

Good observation and I get your point of view, but TMC has also lead to some oligarchs getting contract of everything economically. A fascist government is always pro multinational/richest business class in its purview; not small and very small business owners, the flavour of India that used to proudly have independent ventures, no matter how small, and the large electoral bonds prove that. Kolkata: It has been 14 months since prominent Bengali journalist Suman Chattopadhyay, 64, was arrested for his alleged involvement in a Ponzi scam. A charge sheet was filed within four months of his arrest, but the trial is yet to begin.
Even so, Chattopadhyay remains in jail, with his petitions for bail rejected multiple times at different levels of the judiciary.
His family has cried foul about his continued incarceration, petitioning the Editors’ Guild of India earlier this month to seek its intervention.
They have questioned the basic premise of the CBI’s objection to Chattopadhyay’s requests for bail - that he might influence witnesses and tamper with evidence - by pointing out that he’s jobless.
Even West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has expressed incredulity about his term of imprisonment, suggesting “political vendetta” behind central investigations against high-profile Bengali figures, including politicians and Chattopadhyay.
Lawyers contacted by ThePrint, including Chattopadhyay’s, claimed bail depended on a court’s discretion. The claim was echoed by the CBI, which also clarified that it had been opposing bail for all suspects accused of involvement in Ponzi scams. The accused, a senior CBI officer said, could move higher courts for relief.
Even as the people close to him seek Chattopadhyay’s release, the shadow over him seems to be deepening. While the CBI is already investigating him, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has also allegedly launched more than one case against him.

A powerful man
While out, Chattopadhyay was seen as a powerful man. He has been known to be close to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, as well as some senior Congress leaders and former UPA-II ministers.
The celebrity editor was arrested by the CBI on 20 December 2018 over his alleged role in the money collection schemes run by a company called I-Core. He was the editor of Bengali daily Ei Samay at the time.

Atul Ji, TMC and BJP are the two faces of the same coin. Modus operandi of both TMC and BJP are same. Both the parties believe in opposition free government. Both the parties hate free press and voice of dissent. Both the parties do not have any faith on independent institutions. Numerous false cases have been registered against leaders and followers of opposition parties. At present Bengal is not governed by law of the land but governed by law of the ruler. Goons are protected by TMC and used in rigging of elections. In panchayet elections most of the seats were won uncontested by TMC. Above all, most of the leaders from top to bottom are involved in rampant corruption. There is no punishment for corruption here for TMC. In brief we can say that TMC has dragged Bengal several years back.

I agree with everything you have said. At the same time this government has collected 33 Lc Crores on Fuel. Taking the highest cess since independence. Cut corporate tax by 8% but GST on every essential commodity. Tax on Capital gains. You buy a property pay stamp duty and then pay f*** GST over it. Train fare increased by 40% in the last 10 years. And when it comes to sleeper class and general coaches the regular trains are being turned into special seasonal trains and then pay dynamic fare on it. Over it you have to pay GST again. F******* 18%. Talk about Corruption this government literally legalized it through electoral bonds and every one who was corrupt in 2014 for them is now a saint because they have joined the bandwagon. Talk about women security the lesser we speak about it the better. 128 Lac crore loan in 10 years. Let's take out 40 lac crore state loans from it still 80 Lac crore loans in 10 years ! And we are going to pay the interest on it. The toll taxes on these highways. My God. The NHAI rule says one toll at every 60 Km. They have breached their own rule and it's a toll upon every 45 Km. on average. They talk about National security . Pulwama happened on their watch. Manipur happened on their watch. The Gurdaspur attack happened on their watch. After 15 years we started hearing that terrorists started targeting Hindus in Jammu. Attack in Karnataka , Bihar. Naxal attacks and loss of life by police personnel is not news these days. Just because the media is not showing it, it does not mean it's not happening. I mean Galwan happened under this government's watch. The Chinese are now playing pals with Nepal and Bhutan. Our Military is out of Maldives. Imagine it's the UPA government and these things happened. How many of us would be supporting them? Local news channel and national news channel- both are not same. National news channels are either in hindi or english, so it has large number of viewers all over the country and world. In compare to this, impact of local news channel which is not in hindi/english will be very less.

Most analysts bring the opinions of print and/or television media as base for their opinions. Presently it is important to realise that it is the multiple TH-cam videos/vlogs that are shaping political opinions in the minds of general Bengalis. They should be justly credited for any change in political outcomes in West Bengal.

It's true that there are bootlicking agents in Bengali media...but the TMC is also questioned quite rigorously e.g the Sandeshkhali story was covered extensively in the media...Bengali media cannot be generalized with Godi media yet..
