And you'd be utterly dumbfounded to know just how many sub (and surface ship) commanders can't grasp this single fact. The one thing that every leader absolutely *must* keep in mind at all times is, treat your people like gold. Treat them like the valuable assets they are, treat them fairly, and with respect, and they'll walk through hell for you when you do. Treat them like caretakers of that "40 million dollar computer" and they won't go one extra inch for you. They'll do the barest minimums to get by.
And that applies to *every* profession and industry, not just submarines or the Navy.

A veritable one man ASW team with his side kick seaman; a grease pen ( not a magic marker out of ink); and no First class or Chief (sorry, COB doesn’t count) division officer or anyone else as an AS division. WOW. How does he do it all without sleeping? 🤪 I think I took a trip on this sub at Disneyland CA decades back. Great ‘fantasy’ movie to a point but this particular ‘James Bond’ premise of it REALLY was total hot air. REAL NAVY ship’s and subs are teamwork operations to achieve success. Not Batman and Robin in the atomic Wiener Mobile. PS: Torpedoes don’t come with a self destruct key either at least on surface ships. Reality check just needed saying finally!!!
