Ramius might have gone back. After all, he certainly lived long enough to not only see the fall of Communism and the Soviet Union's collapse but also lived to see his native Lithuania be one of the first to declare their independence from the Soviets to boot. I'd think he'd snuck back into Lithuania to at least see that day first hand. He might not have been able to see his Natalia again but he'd consider seeing Lithuania free from the Soviets a very good consolation prize.

Those fuckers are scary quiet. I think the Project 877 Halibut class boats will have to fill that gap until the 677 Lada boats become available in numbers.

His uboat was tasked with intercepting an american task force with a carrier as the prime target (this was a naval exercise with a bunch of country) So they where able to sneak in but they need a picture of the carrier. the only problem with that was that they where so close that they needed 4 picture to get the whole length of it. They escaped and no one discovered them. Funny enough the Americans did not believe it at first so they demand that we did it one more time. Sure enough my old man did it. I believe i remember him talking about snorkeling beside the tanker (main target because the carrier was unavailable) This time the fleet command had to go back to the USA to explain how he lost his command ship twice. Good old diesel subs.

Usually you have to be able to read and write english. you said you're retiring the navy? not from the navy? yes we are pedantic people who don't understand unless you say it properly and correctly. But this would make sense why so many commanders are being fired and booted from command. If they can't properly express themselves without making errors, how can a boat full of people know what you're talking about unless its all verbal commands? It's all a recipe for disaster.
FUN FACT: The production didn't have access to a real Typhoon class submarine, so they built an above-the-waterline mock-up by getting a ship yard to turn a bunch of huge sea barges upside down, weld them together and add a conning tower and dressing it up. They did a pretty amazing job, really.

The Military has always been very cozy with Hollywood and is more than willing to offer equipment for shots. The Navy figured that this was a better recruitment ad then any commercial they could throw together.

One of the secrets is that there were not annoying, uncalled ,women characters. Were it made today, Ryan would be a short haired lesbian busting everybodys balls totally ruining the movie.
Certainly a classic. I don't know about THE BEST, that's a very high standard, but right up there with The Rock, Con Air, Last Man Standing and Crimson Tide. Ah, the '90's, when all the best movies were made.
Such a great opening! It really set the tone for the entire movie. One of my favorite submarines movies of all time. Sir Sean Connery, you will be dearly missed!
When the music swells and it says "PARAMOUNT PICTURES PRESENTS" somehow you know you're in for something EPIC. One of my favorite scenes in the whole movie.
john mctiernan was a very underrated director. that opening shot of ramius's eyes speaks volumes without saying a word. the wind, the grey sky, the hard age lines on his face, all scream cold bitterness of the weather and the soul. a perfect introduction to ramius and his journey to come!
RIP Sean Connery. Thank you for all your wonderful films - we will continue to watch and cherish them. I look forward when I can show Hunt for Red October to my kids.

The only part that truly doesn't make sense is 1:05, looks like they just translated the English script phrase by phrase without context. The pronunciation is really bad in 2 places here: 1:05 and 1:32, with 0:42 being a bit meh as well. The rest sounds ok. The rest of the movie, not so much =)

My wife was in labor for 18 hours, this was one of the movies we watched during that time. It was one of her favorites and Sean Connery was her celebrity crush.

Before I retired I worked with a guy from Russia - a great guy who, along with his wife and young daughter, have become American citizens. Alex and I were both sons of the WWII generation to give you some idea of our age. Alex has a great sense of humor but one thing gets his goat. His greatest complaint is the American treatment of Russian members of the military in movies concerning only one issue, and that is that in every movie, sooner or later, the soldiers, sailors or airmen burst into song. He actually becomes quite affected by this ... "I served my time as a conscript as all Russian boys do and never, never, NEVER - not even one time - have I heard soldiers just spontaneously singing." His wife, who is a rather laid back and quiet person bursts into laughter whenever he starts on this gripe because she knows how worked up he will get. After a few minutes he calms down, looks around and sees the smile on everyone's faces and then bursts out in laughter himself. .... He also says that in every western-made movie the accents of the Russians are very very bad.

Just as the director intended, when you get an idea of the sheer size of the Red October, it reminds me of the appearance of the Star Destroyer at the beginning of Star Wars, and accompanied by the amazing music, slightly more majestic and goosebumpy. The first time I saw this scene, my jaw dropped and my senses felt like they'd just been buggered by a large telegraph pole. Nice one, Mr. McTiernan...
Not only that, but just when you get an idea of how big a Star Destroyer was, suddenly, in ESB, they bring out the SSD, which makes the standard SDs look like tug boats in comparison to a carrier ...
And whats even more nuts...is that the giant mock up we see Connery and Neil riding in this scene isnt even as big as a real Typhoon/Akula....which were nearly twice this size 😳
my father-in-law is Russian who worked at 80s with nuclear submarines.He found about 932 faults in this movie but loved every second. And Rip Sean Connery. :(

Yep. The first minute of the Red October theme is fantastic. Then it switches to that high pitched singing and shatters the mood established in the first minute. A real shame. It's like they smashed three or four different pieces of music together.

The special effects department built a superstructure on a barge, and this is what you see in the opening scene. It passes very favorably for a Typhoon Class. The tending ships were dressed up to look like Soviet Navy. The beautiful snow covered background was filmed in Alaska. Not bad at all, and no CGE.
@@thompsona1232 They dismantled it and tossed the parts into a vacant lot in the Port of LA. The two barges were pretty much destroyed and had to be scrapped.
The barge was built to be semi-submersible for the diving scenes. Not everyone got the word and they lost a $60,000 camera into LA harbor during filming.

Basil Poledaris' music score is absolutely incredible. The performances, effects, & screenplay are outstanding. Director John McTiernan was at the top of his game here.
The Hunt For Red October was fairly amazing for another reason not mentioned here. It portrayed the Russians as a formal and dignified adversary. It eschewed the easy black-white dichotomy of America Good, Russia Bad, instead providing a deeper and richer palette from which to develop characters, plot, and drama. Really, this was a great movie made well. I'd be surprised if it fails to withstand the test of time.
I was literally sat here thinking how the hell did they do that shot given they obviously didn't have access to a typhoon class at the height of the cold war to film on, very well done. Thank you.
No. It's not even close to the full-scale. The actual thing is 10 times larger, even larger than WW2-era Aircraft Carriers. So large that the real Typhoon-class submarine could easily flip the entire mock-up and those auxillery ships nearby with it's sheer size alone.

There was this one occasion, I was looking at some map and Murmansk caught my eye. And I thought to myself, "So, that's where The Hunt for Red October kicks off."
An equally good sub movie in my opinion is "Das Boot"(The Boat), which depicts the mission of a World War Two German U Boat. In this movie one sees quickly the danger of these missions and the Spartan living conditions in these WW2 subs.

One of the best fictional captain's. John Milius, who wrote Apocalypse Now penned the "We shail into history" Captain address to the crew which got Connery to sign on to the project.
I feel so sorry for Captain Ramius watching this. Just by looking at his eyes you can tell how he feels. He loves his country but leaves it because he cannot stand the system ruling it. And the thought that he will never be able to return breaks his heart. He has my sympathy.

This scene changed my life. 33 years after watching this for the first time I am retiring the Navy having commanded a submarine for more than 4 years!

The pronunciation is really bad in 2 places here: 1:05 and 1:32, with 0:42 being a bit meh as well. The rest sounds ok. The rest of the movie, not so much =)
@@uspatriot4261 They use proper grammar for the most part, but the accents (or lack thereof) are complete rubbish. It's especially noticeable on all the "r" sounds where there is a complete lack of roll.

My wife was in labor for 18 hours, this was one of the movies we watched during that time. It was one of her favorites and Sean Connery was her celebrity crush.

@@paiman1976 Unfortunately I lost her to cancer after 29 years of marriage. She also became an Arthur C. Clarke fan as well. She really liked the Rama series. We both agreed that Babylon 5 should have ended after the Shadow War, after that it "jumped the shark." I miss her every moment of everyday.

Before I retired I worked with a guy from Russia - a great guy who, along with his wife and young daughter, have become American citizens. Alex and I were both sons of the WWII generation to give you some idea of our age. Alex has a great sense of humor but one thing gets his goat. His greatest complaint is the American treatment of Russian members of the military in movies concerning only one issue, and that is that in every movie, sooner or later, the soldiers, sailors or airmen burst into song. He actually becomes quite affected by this ... "I served my time as a conscript as all Russian boys do and never, never, NEVER - not even one time - have I heard soldiers just spontaneously singing." His wife, who is a rather laid back and quiet person bursts into laughter whenever he starts on this gripe because she knows how worked up he will get. After a few minutes he calms down, looks around and sees the smile on everyone's faces and then bursts out in laughter himself. .... He also says that in every western-made movie the accents of the Russians are very very bad.

And having Sean Connery play a leader is a compliment. Heck, he was even great as a Spaniard in the Highlander.

Just as the director intended, when you get an idea of the sheer size of the Red October, it reminds me of the appearance of the Star Destroyer at the beginning of Star Wars, and accompanied by the amazing music, slightly more majestic and goosebumpy. The first time I saw this scene, my jaw dropped and my senses felt like they'd just been buggered by a large telegraph pole. Nice one, Mr. McTiernan...
Not only that, but just when you get an idea of how big a Star Destroyer was, suddenly, in ESB, they bring out the SSD, which makes the standard SDs look like tug boats in comparison to a carrier ...
And whats even more nuts...is that the giant mock up we see Connery and Neil riding in this scene isnt even as big as a real Typhoon/Akula....which were nearly twice this size 😳
This is one of my favourite film openings ever, it sets the mood for the rest of the film so well. This film in general is definitely in my top ten.
my father-in-law is Russian who worked at 80s with nuclear submarines.He found about 932 faults in this movie but loved every second. And Rip Sean Connery. :(

Yep. The first minute of the Red October theme is fantastic. Then it switches to that high pitched singing and shatters the mood established in the first minute. A real shame. It's like they smashed three or four different pieces of music together.

I remember waiting in a local mall to see this. All five theatres were playing it and there were lines going to the other end of the mall.

The special effects department built a superstructure on a barge, and this is what you see in the opening scene. It passes very favorably for a Typhoon Class. The tending ships were dressed up to look like Soviet Navy. The beautiful snow covered background was filmed in Alaska. Not bad at all, and no CGE.

@@thompsona1232 They dismantled it and tossed the parts into a vacant lot in the Port of LA. The two barges were pretty much destroyed and had to be scrapped.
The barge was built to be semi-submersible for the diving scenes. Not everyone got the word and they lost a $60,000 camera into LA harbor during filming.

Basil Poledaris' music score is absolutely incredible. The performances, effects, & screenplay are outstanding. Director John McTiernan was at the top of his game here.
The Hunt For Red October was fairly amazing for another reason not mentioned here.
It portrayed the Russians as a formal and dignified adversary. It eschewed the easy black-white dichotomy of America Good, Russia Bad, instead providing a deeper and richer palette from which to develop characters, plot, and drama.
Really, this was a great movie made well. I'd be surprised if it fails to withstand the test of time.

I was literally sat here thinking how the hell did they do that shot given they obviously didn't have access to a typhoon class at the height of the cold war to film on, very well done. Thank you.
No. It's not even close to the full-scale. The actual thing is 10 times larger, even larger than WW2-era Aircraft Carriers. So large that the real Typhoon-class submarine could easily flip the entire mock-up and those auxillery ships nearby with it's sheer size alone.
The Typhoon isn't aa large as a normal fleet carrier, but they are larger than escort carriers and light carriers. And that says something.
That is an enormous submarine, holy fuck!

An equally good sub movie in my opinion is "Das Boot"(The Boat), which depicts the mission of a World War Two German U Boat. In this movie one sees
quickly the danger of these missions and the Spartan living conditions in these WW2 subs.
-Jefrey Pelt: "Mr. Ambassador, you have nearly a hundred naval vessels operating in the North Atlantic right now. Your aircraft has dropped enough sonar buoys so that a man could walk from Greenland to Iceland to Scotland without getting his feet wet. Now, shall we dispense with the bull?"
-Ambassador Lysenko: "You make your point as delicately as ever, Mr. Pelt"
The delivery of those lines is forever etched in my head from regular rewatches of this movie. I loved how the actor played Pelt.

I'm a woman, born about 30 years after Mr. Connery, who has rarely found older men appealing as a romantic partner, but I would always make an exception for him (and Michael Caine) if I had any chance.
This opening scene is really a work of art! Love the theme and the movie. One of Sean Connery's best!

I feel so sorry for Captain Ramius watching this. Just by looking at his eyes you can tell how he feels. He loves his country but leaves it because he cannot stand the system ruling it. And the thought that he will never be able to return breaks his heart. He has my sympathy.
