This was really helpful! I am new to the hobby and just want everything right now but this helps me narrow down what to not grab first and why. Thanks so much!
I do enjoy this type of content, really great discussion.
Can I offer a suggestion that I picked up while actually watching this. You mention there are other games that replace them or give you a better experience. I would love a video just like this, mentioning the games you feel you don’t need to play again but also then what you think replaces it for you (if anything) and how that to you, gives you a better experience or more joy.
I think that could be cool, maybe direct people to new gems or old ones maybe they missed. To me, it would be cool then if a year or so down the road you make another video and that game gets replaced, just to see how you grow as a gamer or find new loves.
Anyway, great content. Thanks!
Great suggestion and I’m absolutely gonna do a supplemental video talking about games I play instead of these ones. Cheers!!
Can’t wait for that @TheBrothersMurph!!
Honestly, we feel the EXACT same about twilight struggle! Put it into words wonderfully!
Before I found a gaming group and also before I got really into solo gaming, my mom would play games with me out of pity even though she’s not a huge board game fan. But she almost always chose Sagrada to play, so now I feel like I’ve played it more than enough times.
Copy that! Sometimes games are good and you simply play them out. We have definitely done that with some games.
Thank you, Mike! Nice reasoning and arguments. :) For me game like that is Fury of Dracula.
For me I can think of 4 games:
- Terraforming Mars (played once, didn't captivate me mechanically or thematically)
- Spirit Island (played it a few times with a mate who really likes it, but it was too long and the puzzle just never clicked with me)
- 7 wonders duel (owned for a few years, played about 10-15 times but eventually the 7 wonders part of it just didn't interest me... On that note 7 wonders is also a game I don't need to play again)
- Caverna (agricola is more fun for me, the card variety beats the tile variety)
You just named three games that are on my small wishlist (the first three). 😅 I'm still new to the hobby, so I'm curious, what are games that you love playing?
Great video concept !!
This is an amazing video idea, love these different top 10s!!!
I take this back once I saw the number one. How dare you! 😂
Ha! no take backsies!
Definitely for me would be Wingspan.
The game is beautiful, simple and has a great amount of strategy and I enjoyed my time with it, but I'd be totally indifferent if it never graced my presence again :D
Went all in on everdell big box at gen con 2023. Actually really impressed with the game. Really like that I don't need to use all the expansions. I do like all the variety of characters you get with the set and love the stickers that bring the characters to life.
Heck yeah so glad you’re liking it!
Not Everdell!?😢😢😢😢😢 Say it ain't so! I must agree that I wasn't a fan of the Pearlbrook expansion. But the Spirecrest expansion is the best!
I love carrying around the Everdell big box. It makes me feel like I'm getting a bit of a workout.
That’s facts!
Please do more of these! Love hearing why popular games might not be for me, way more than endless hype. Keep doing the good work 👏👏👏
Btw my game for this list is Dinosaur Island. Just too sprawling and too many steps, with artwork that just doesn't grab me. I'm also not a huge fan of dice dictating what I can and can't do. Or dice in general. I know this now.
I agree this didn't grab me (I sold off my kickstarter after a couple plays), but I contest that it's a "great game". Not that it's terrible, but I think there's little to distinguish it from any number of worker-placement soup games out there (other than perhaps neon pink).
I discovered Bool Rage this year after so long and our group clicked on it and now we have dived in deep. Amazing game.
I agree on Everdell.
Thanks for the video. Nice to hear people's personal reasons for liking and not liking specific games
Cheers!
I have upgraded my copy of Lords of Waterdeep with metal coins, wodden character meeples etc. It makes the game a lot better I feel.
Lords of Waterdeep: Great worker placement intro, great bridge to and from TTRPGs, staple in my collects. The others, while I've played them all, I'm good :)
Totally fair
I'm good with never playing Scythe again.
I can dig it
Out of curiosity, how many times have you played it?
@@JayChampagne Twice
I’ve played Scythe probably 10 times by now. Never even touched the rise of fenris expansion. But I’m already done with it too
@@zingeraleI ask because my experience with Scythe and Expeditions is that they don't make particularly good first impressions (aside from aesthetics), but get much better with repeated plays.
I think for me it got to be Wingspan. Love the game but it's something I don't reach for very often.
I sold my copy of Eclipse for that exact reason + other reasons. Early game RNG creates huge power swings, bad rolls can set you back multiple turns in a game that only has 8 turns, and player agency is generally low. I also think that the wormhole mechanic makes it way too easy to avoid conflict. Also, even if you know you have to go attack another player, movement is so slow that it usually takes multiple actions to move enough ships to attack, and while you are moving, your opponent is making their ships stronger.
I don't think Lords of Waterdeep "created" worker placement games. They were already a popular genre when LoW came out. However, it's definitely an excellent introduction to the mechanism as it's a fairly straightforward implementation, even with the expansion. The only real wrinkles it brings to the formula are the creation of additional spaces by the players and, with the expansion, a negative resource in the form of corruption.
Yea BUS (1999) introduces worker placement and Caylus (2005) makes it popular.
Yeah that's fair, I guess we always hear people talk about it being THIER first worker placement so it feels like it was the first even though it wasn't
Caylus (2005) has player-created spots as a central mechanism. Also, Le Havre (2008).
@@bigdavexx1 Right, and other games have negative resources. I'm just saying that those are the only things in this game that really deviate from the standard worker placement formula.
I guess there's some hand management and secret objectives, too.
For sure, LoW did not "create" worker placement games. Not even close to creating this family of games. Agricola was 2008 and I'm sure that's not the first either.
I'm curious, which games would you say do what Lords of Waterdeep does but better? I'm always looking for a high quality worker placement game where you fulfill contracts and build new placement spots over the course of the game, it's just hard to find one with all those exact aspects.
One game comes to mind for me immediately. For someone who plays solo a lot, and loves a great experience, I realize I’m in the minority. That game is Final Girl.
Luckily, I only own one box, but I did think the game mats and minis would bring this experience up for me. I was so very wrong. I think it’s a great game and definitely see why so many cherish it, but I’m good on that one. Actively trying to sell it, which tells you a lot.
Thanks Mike! This is a great idea and is cool to see games that don’t hit for you, even though you admit that most are great ones. You don’t see that super often in the board game world.
I just played Lords of Waterdeep for the first time in years, and it is still good. I do feel that the art needs refreshed, and the cubes need replaced, but it was still fun. I would like to hear recommendations of similar games that are better.
Champions of midgard, Raiders of the north sea.
Lords of Waterdeep has readily available upgraded bits if you don't like the cubes haha.
Naw they should just come in the box. I just got to play with laaaaaaame cubes
Weirdly, I love reaching the point where I've played a game *enough*. It's disappointing if it happens within a game or two but there is a feeling of accomplishment when you play a game to the point where you are done with it, happily. Not a messy breakup, but a happy end to a fun relationship ;)
We have definitely had a lot of games that I have reached that point, and I see it as nothing but positive. They served an awesome purpose. I had a ton of great experiences, no negativity whatsoever, and then I’m happy to get that game into somebody else’s hands for them to enjoy, instead of sitting, and collecting dust on my shelf.
@@TheBrothersMurph exactly. I'm mostly disappointed when I play a game with some real promise but the community moves on from it before I can reach the point of playing the game to its conclusion.
Me too. For me it seems that every game ends up eventually in that state, of being played out enough times with all enjoyable experiences, so that I milked it dry and it doesn't have any more exciting stuff to offer to me. While still feeling very warm to me and I am glad to play it if opportunity comes up.
Great vid!
I guess the good thing with Everdell is that you're fine with just the base game. The expansions are really just nice to have.
I'm also really bad at Blood Rage but I enjoy it nevertheless. 😄 The one game that just isn't for me is Dune: Imperium. Just didn't click with me.
I absolutely adore Everdell, but I agree that the potential for what is effectively "player elimination" is a slightly inelegant bit of design. That said, in such cases we usually fast forward through the game, grabbing events and journeys to wrap things up, so it's not really a huge deal. And honestly, it's not THAT different from euros where people play badly and only technically stay in the game even though it's obvious they can't really achieve anything anymore - Everdell at least gives such players the opportunity to quietly "retire". :)
As for expansions, for what it's worth they are pretty awesome (except Pearlbrook which looks beautiful but doesn't really play well). We now include the automa spider from Mistwood in practically all our 2-player games and it's a blast.
I do hold out, hope someday to do a massive “all in“ play of everdell, and just have every expansion in there and make a huge old mess
I still want to play everdell, even though I sold it off. My main reason for selling it was exactly what you said about all the content. I felt like it needed expansions to open up for me and each one costs $60. . . Not $25 (I pretty much firmly believe all expansions should be around $25).
Bruh.. inflation...
@@86Disab yeah I guess maybe inflation should also imply publishers could decrease unnecessary box/shipping size of most expansions that work out to be a deck of cards and 1 die. Maybe just overall pressure to pare down unnecessary components and minis.
Soooo prohibitive. They overprice all their content: base game, expansions, everything. It bothers me. That being said, I own the complete collection haha.
@@tyleryoung3158 I think “prohibitive” is the word for it. I think their business model is obviously working, and I’m not saying board game publishers are rich, but mostly that the hobby’s culture is skewing bigger and more expensive and pricing me out of the hobby.
I refuse to buy Everdell for that exact reason that I can stomach the base game cost (though I think it's still high) the expansions are a ripoff.
Content idea: (maybe you already have it in the works but...) Maybe a couple games that you would rather play for each one that you don't want to play. Say someone says,"let's play everdell." What games would you rather play that give kind of the same feels that would want to play and they might enjoy also?
I kinda was also expecting some alternatives to the games he ditched.
Yup yup lots of others have suggested the same and I’ll do a vid on that soon! Great suggestion :)
Will you follow up with games you would rather play than these ones? Would love to hear what games you prefer compared to these.
You mentioned games that had improved on Waterdeep. Very curious which ones you feel better. Cheers!
I can absolutely do that
One thing I hated about Everdell is that it really needs you to chain very specific cards together to play well. The deck of cards is big enough that you may never realistically get the chance to grab the linked card you might need. I don’t really want that kind of thing. I prefer something like Ark Nova where I can get a similar feel of chaining combos but it’s less specific and more general with tags/elements on cards.
Agreed about ark nova. Lots of ways to get stuff done so no one card is make or break
With newleaf expansion you get 3 tokens that you can use to play free critters. And also other things so you can save cards to play cheeper, tickets to move your workers, among other stuff. It really changes the game! I love all the other expansions as well. But pearlbrook the least. 😅 only played with it once or twice.
Or one card is really good but only seen once, like the judge.
Totally agree❤
A few times you mentioned the games clearly benefit from repeated plays. I feel like that might be a downside to boardgame content creation, I know you guys have games you play frequently but you also always have to be looking to the horizon and mining that sweet fresh cardboard... ...we thank you for your sacrifice.
That’s exactly yet! We just don’t honestly have that much time to invest in those games the way that they are meant to be invested in. I think that’s a wonderful thing about those games but one of those things I just makes it tough for us. but I’m so glad they exist.
I'm ready to give up my copy of Robinson Crusoe: Adventures on the Cursed Island. I've played all the base box scenarios multiple times.
I can dig it. That game was on my short list for this video
Great take! I think one of the problems of the current state of the hobby is that new players/hobbyists are still coming in in troves, and some of the content on YT is new badly outdated - these new players may well follow suggestions on outdated games (I know I did), only to realize later that those games haven't always aged too well. They're still good games, but there's much better out on the market right now - Lords of Waterdeep is an excellent example of that.
I was really excited to finally get my hands on dinosaur Island. I really liked it, but after about 3 plays, I was okay never playing it again. Same with Duelosaur Island. I don't know what it was about the games, but I was done after a few plays. Another one that comes to mind is City of Iron second edition. I really liked the way it handled deck building and I thought it was a really good game, but after a few plays, I was okay never playing it again. One thing that really bothered me about the second edition was the addition of the round tracker. The round tracker has always felt like a very lazy design choice, unless it has a thematic tie. In almost every case, I'd prefer the end of the game is tied to some other condition.
The Gallerist is a stunner of a game, but only once for me.
Can you suggest some worker placement you prefer to play compared to everdell and lords of waterdeep?
I am currently thinking of viticulture with expansion. What is your opinion on the best modern worker placement game that is light to medium weight like those two?
So viticulture is way up there. Such a good game. Can’t go wrong. We’d also suggest either raiders of the North Sea or architects of the west kingdom both from Garphill Games
Break ups are so hard...😆 At least you were up front and honest with these "good but have run their course," Board Game relationships. Now there is more room in your big Board Game heart.🤪
That’s exactly it!
I hear you with Eclipse with the random rewards for tile discovery. I don't agree on the combat and dice rolling. The idea is to upgrade your ships and invest in technology so you have better dice. Agree to disagree.
There aren’t enough upgrades in the world to overcome my Dice luck, unfortunately. But I do like that there is mitigation via those upgrades!
For a moment my heart stood still after Twilight....thought you were going the Imperium route. Twilight Struggle is still high on my list of 'to play' games, especially since I am a history teacher.
Right on right on. Haven’t played TI4 yet so we’ll see!
@@TheBrothersMurph next year I am going to do a road trip through the US (I'm from the Netherlands. Maybe I am close enough to teach you guys the uncrowned king of Board Game Awesomeness?
I’d love to play TI4 with the Murphdom. But even though I could drastically shorten the game. And give them the best chance to love it. I just don’t think they would love it. Folks need to love the concept of a space civilization that is in direct conflict with every other space civ. That the game is a huge buildup. That takes four hours for their first three player game. That even though I would play sub-optimally- they would still struggle to score points. It is a race to points even though it looks like a war game. It just isn’t their perfect style.
But agreed on Twilight Struggle. It’s an amazing game with so much depth. And I don’t want to have to learn so much to be competitive and feel like I’m doing well. So I’m happy with my three plays and never want to play it again.
Your comments are very valid and very intersting to say why you are not going to play them. I´ll just say that I was expecting like the games that take the place for those games, like Lords of Waterdeep.
Love the shirt, Mike.
Cool video concept, and I enjoyed it. I disagree on a couple, but that’s cool. For me, Tokaido and Robinson Crusoe are on my list. Tokaido is a solid game, just not much for me. Robinson Crusoe is good, but I went through, beat the missions, and I don’t feel like I’ll need to do that again. I’d also put Carcassonne on there too. Really appreciate that game, but I’d almost always rather play Cascadia or Kingdomino. Cheers.
In my head this list also blends into another list of "potentially great games that I simply had a bad first experience with". A lot of it has to do with who I played with and who taught it, but my list would include Blood Rage, Robinson Crusoe, and Deception: Murder in Hong Kong.
Dominion for me. I’ve played it since and loved it, but the guy who introduced me just got us together to wipe the floor with us. Totally turned me off of the game.
couldn’t agree more except for Everdell. But you are right about Everdell.
I 100% agree with Everdell. For me it also feels very luck based, if you get a chance to get the king or queen (etc) you do it. It frustrates me that I never get a "free" card since they don't show at the right time etc.
for me these 5 games I have gotten rid of, but sometimes I regret it, but then again I don't need to play them again: a feast for odin, underwater cities, gugong, voyages of marco polo and beyond the sun. I miss them though...
I was wondering if Res Arcana was going to make this list. I know you guys really like some engine builders like Furnace ect - but I've never seen you mention Res, so I just assumed you don't like it much. I love the game. Games that I've played recently that I wasn't a fan of for reasons were Fury of Dracula, Encyclopedia, and Munchkin.
That’s fair I hadn’t thought about Res but it’s a game that just doesn’t hit for us for whatever reason. Maybe we have to try it with some of the expansion materials
Good list
Cheers
Good video, good commentary
Cheers thanks so much!
I played Everdell with friends who have played it several times before and it showed. Exactly what you said, I was done in like couple minutes while my friend took like 15mins. Ofc he won and not by a small margin. It just wasn't as fun as all the reviews suggested (for me).
I'd love to hear Nick's take on this as well.
Eclipse 2nd ed is on my list for pretty much the same reasons. Lost too many games due to poor tile draw on my part and others getting the really cool tiles and techs.
I would add Dwellings of Eldervale to the list. Played the overly deluxe-ified version, and its got a lot of QoL components. It suffers a similar problem with luck, and there are a couple of mechanical issues that I have with the game, so I really have no interest in playing it again. Luckily for me, many of those issues I have will be fixed in the new Andromeda's Edge
Another game I would add is Tapestry. Lovely game. but the design just fluffed some of the details, and can make luck determine the winner.
Great video, I really appreciate that this is not about bashing and is still positive, it's not YOU it's ME! I played Flash Point once, it wasnt for me.
Of course! Thats what we hoped to convey with this video so I’m glad it comes through. Also agreed about flash point. We were bummed. We’ve been looking forward to trying it for so long and then we played it once, and never had interest in trying it again.
Lol the first 3 are in my top 10 🤭 here’s hoping on the last 2 🤞🏽
Everdell is the opposite for me, i know its not so great but somehow it always hits the table. ive been playing everdell 50 times a year for 4 years
Jesus lol
I dig it!
Hmmm “not so great” but you play it a lot? Sounds like the making of a game that is…..great?
Everdell is a really good game, just because Mike's tired of it, doesn't mean it's not. Every game he has on here most people would consider a timeless classic.
I enjoy base Everdell and have no interest in any of the expansions. But I don't play it often enough to tire of it.
For me that BTDT game is Earth. I know folks like it but I find it pretty but oh so bland. In every game of it I've played, everyone always got to do everything we want and nothing stood in anyone's way... which is not as satisfying as it may sound.
Everdell is on my list as well. It looks exactly like what I like in board game: engine building, tableu laying, nice art work, a lot of cute animals. At the end I culled the game. Later on when there is an ios app, I even try that one out, and find the experience similarly disappointing.
I don't really get why either. It might have something to do with the game being more tactical than strategic. It's not as much about building engine or combo as trying to squeeze in as much action as you can before you move on to the next season. At least, that's what I get from my limited experience with the game.
Also I thought the game was about how long one should hold on to the animal cards and build the structure first, so one could house the animal for free. That however doesn't feel like such a big deal afterall. Animals are way cheaper than structure, so if you really want their power, just pay for it, unless it's really convenient for you to build the structure first. That part of mechanisms is a cherry on top which I somehow mistake to be the main decision. Again this is from my very limited experience.
Everdell is one of the best games ever created, the replay ability is so high! It’s has gorgeous art and amazing strategy.
So glad you dig it!
Agree with all these games EXCEPT lords of waterdeep. Definitely need the expansion and some upgraded bits but it’s an evergreen at my house. I can do without any and all Lacerta games.
Thank you for the video!
I agree, a game with a big random element deciding the game is not great. Here are 5 of mine...
5. Everdell (was fun to play with family but no plans to add to my collection)
4. Werewolves (not into bluffing but works for people who like that)
3. Wingspan (it just didn't click with me but obviously popular)
1. Diplomacy - I left board gaming for 20 years after that. If I play again I'll know to expect politics and backstabbing.
But I would play them if that is what someone else picked to play.
Is there a reason you omitted 2?
@@dallastexas5653 #2 Could be left unnamed for a game I can't remember anymore.
Actually was re-ordering and just made a mistake.
That intro 10/10
Whoa, coming out swinging with LoWD! lol I'd be interested to hear if you think there's a game that replaces LoWD for you but keep that gateway-plus-ish complexity level? There are worker placement games that I love to play more than LoWD, but I've found very few that I can bring out with casual gamers that I like as much. Everdell Farshore kind of solves the issue to me of coming into the whole system late. I was someone intrigued by Everdell but didn't jump on the train, and then like you said now there's 10 expansions, it kinda moved past me. So then they just introduce Everdell Farshore, and that's where I took the plunge. A new refined base game for those of us who the original passed by.
I’ll absolutely do a vid of recommendations of Alt games to the ones I mentioned and fantastic point about farshore!
Raiders of the north sea and stone age.
Once in awhile I play a game and something in that games excites about playing another game. In the fall of the mountain king the gnomes and ancestry card puzzle mechanism made want to play bonfire!
Can you provide some examples of worker placement games that are better than Lords of Waterdeep, in a similar weight class? Light-medium weight? Genuinely curious. Thanks!
I was wondering that as well. Champions of Midgard gets compared to it the most. Perhaps Raiders of the North Sea and Raiders of Scythia...?
I have quite many of those.
The biggest few are:
Root
Nemesis
Clash of Cultures
Lords of Waterdeep (2012). Agricola (2007). Not sure if there were earlier games, but Lords by no means ushered in the era of Worker placement games.
Those years are made up. Or I got them wrong. No way of knowing
I feel this way about Diplomacy and Viticulture. Diplomacy just involved too much negotiating and plotting and fiddliness with combat that I do not care for at all. Viticulture just didn't click with me the first time I played it and I don't know that I want to go through that whole experience again to see if I like it. But of the two, I'd be more open to retrying Viticulture.
Yeah I've never played Diplomacy because I know that game is NOT for me lol
Same here. I found Viticulture very meh
I can certainly understand not being interested in Diplomacy, but it has the least "fiddly" combat imaginable. It's like "3>2, so 3 wins".
Eclipse second dawn!!! Noooo lol. This game is AMAZING. I’ve always had great experiences! The luck is mitigated big time with how you build your ships etc. but darn, that’s a game I want everyone to love.
I do think strategy is involved. If you wanna avoid conflict, you explore and orient things so people can’t get to you. When someone else gets a free ship and you get resources, resources are huge. Might mean a whole extra turn, an extra tech! Etc. If you are not rolling hits you upgrade your ships to roll the better dice that have more hits on them! Play with the faction tahts starts with better ships, etc.
There is luck, but you can strategize around all of it.
Fully agreed with regards to Eclipse. I played it for the first time recently and don't really see myself revisiting it.
Big ones for me are Ark Nova and Bitoku. I'm sure they are great games because they seem to have decent fanbases, but once was enough for me. For the former, I just find the game play very formulaic, and for the latter, even though it's very pretty it is way too fiddly.
Your arguments immediately made me think of Root. Because if 1 or more people know the armies and know how to play and ur playing with a player or 2 that don't, it's tough.
Yeah that one absolute rewards heavy investment
Cascadia falls flat for me right now, but wingspan did that at first for me and have been playing it as a way to get people into gaming and enjoying it more. I suspect cascadia will be better once my group can get the playtime down. Taking almost 2 hours to finish a game of Cascadia is nails on a chalkboard for me haha... the reward is not worth the investment at that point.
Oooh yeah 2 hour cascadia does not sound fun
I feel so personally attacked by this video. Liked and subbed.
For me Everdell is just so so beautiful I would put it on the table any second of any day. But I don't own it, I agree that it's way too expensive. The reason I never bought it is that I'm also worried I would get bored of it quickly and then it would be just a pretty, but expensive box on the shelf.
For me some bigger names that I don't really care to play again are;
- Terraforming Mars, the luck with the card draws ruins this for me, and I would much rather play Gaia Project which doesn't have so much luck involved (if any..?)
- Obsession, Arnak, I should like these on paper because they are the exact complexity that I would enjoy any day... but they are just boring. Obsession is one of the most boring games I have ever played. And Arnak just doesn't hit it for me for whatever reason.
- As for a newer game.. Challengers! is also one of the worst games I think I have ever played lol. I didn't enjoy a single second of the few games I played, it's a luck fest, no matter what you do. Not gonna play it ever again. And i rarely ever say this, because I almost always find at least one thing I like about every game I play. I'm BAFFLED that this game got the award.
- One last game that is rather popular, King of Tokyo. So much luck involved as well, and it's just so boring. Might be more fun with bigger groups, but I never do that, so not for me.
Great thoughts thanks so much for sharing!!
I couldn’t disagree more with Bloodrage and Eclipse, as they are both in my top 10 and I can never get enough plays. I’ve never played Everdell but I have zero interest in playing it. Great video!
That’s awesome I’m so glad those games bring all the joy for ya!
I was questioning my taste because Eclipse and B loodrage might be my two favorite games! Glad I’m not alone
Blood Rage I own and I think it's the weakest of Lang's mythic trilogy, and it's not even close. Ankh is far more fun and interest, and Rising Sun just stomps on both.
Everdell is evergreen for me. We own the Master Collection. But the game that applies for me that I am content to never play again is Settlers of CATAN. Been there, done that, don’t need to ever again.
Catan is 100% on my list too good call haha
Near and far was a one and done for me.
You just took Everdell out to pasture. You've become a monster, Mike.
I’m the worst
For me , Unmatched. I've played 5-7 times the Legends Vol1 trying all the characters. It's such a cool concept and i love card play in games, but I dont want to buy anymore of it.
Thank you for your takes on these games :)
With number 5 I agree with you, I also appreciate it for what it is but it feels outdated.
I really want to get number 4 but I would miss the crowfunding exclusive content so I am waiting for a 2nd edition. Fingers crossed.
Number 3 is in my top three and I feel you play with competitive players a lot. Do you mean you have PvP combat before turn 7 or 8? :D Anyone could cripple a newbie with some lucky dice rolls or early aggression but where is the fun in that?
I have no experience with number 2 but with number 1 I could advise to jump on that train and just buy the 'train themed' expansion. I nearly hated that game for its innate randomness and I would have never thought that the 5th expansion were the fix I needed for it. I've got converted and went all in since then. However you are right about the feeling that not all expansions are great. I would recommend the last 3 and some of the side content which came in the original collectors edition of the base game. Cheers
I hate to see blood rage on here lol. I LOVE blood rage!! But I completely agree it benefits on repeat play and really knowing what you are drafting.
I feel punished in scythe with inbalance of experience but on this one I’m on the experienced side lol
Blood rage is absolutely amazing - we can’t get enough of it and yeah first play for a new player you aren’t going to win. But I’ve found people quickly get better. But I do get your critique.
And Everdell I guess same thing - amazing game but yeah good to know the cards and synergies.
To be fair I think most games will favor the experienced played so it isn’t even a bad thing. I think with blood rage I’m just a sore loser haha
Ogre was a great game for me. If anyone told me they were getting into strategy wargaming I would 100% recommend Ogre. Low cost, simple rules, 2player. Perfect starting point. But it's time for you to fly now Ogre, fly high and create more wargamers.
Oh wow, I actually agree with all of these.
My different game groups all love Everdell but I’m the one who owns the copy. So I’ve played it the most out of everyone and have burned out on it. Yes there are synergies but it’s annoying how some games you get more lucky with what cards are in the shared meadow on your turn. It always felt kind of unfair in that sense.
Yeah the luck with drawing critters that you already have the buildings for can be pretty rough
Terra Mystica for me
The whole time I was thinking "this is fine, but i'd rather just play Gaia Project"
Fair enough!
Maybe try Everdell Farshore. it's supposed to have a few of the best expansion stuff built in and it's a bit looser I think. I think I should probably sell my epic edition and just get this.
Whaaaat? Eclipse! We LOOOOVE it and after many sessions we are still discovering HUUUGE STRATEGIES! Are you crazy?
Glad you like it!
A lot of the games I thought I was done with were actually suffering from too much expansions and bloat. There are a lot of games that I decided to keep but sold off all the expansions and then rediscovered it. Playing the core with people who know the game unlocks a depth to it that got obscured by all the shiney expansions.
So anyway, my 5 games I won't play again:
- Gloomhaven (played Jaws, almost finished the big box, zero interest in Frosthaven etc.)
- Terraforming Mars - I just don't understand the hype...
- Gaia Project - I understand what it wants to do but I can play games that do it faster and more efficient.
- Architects of the West Kingdom - if someone wants to play it I will, but I'd rather play Paladins...
- Cartographers - it just doesn't do anything for me, I'd rather play Next Station.
Terraforming Mars, Spirit Island, Great Western Trail
I agree that Everdell has gotten too big! The only expansion I play with now is Mistwood because of the new solo mode. I’ve also started home brewing some of the rules from the new Fairshore into Everdell and it’s helped a lot!
I did splurge on the collector box or what it's called but we just knew from previous sessions, that anything more than Bellfaire + big expansion is just too much.
But not throwing in everything and the kittchensink is something that we have finally come to embrace It's either pearlbrook OR spirecrest OR new leaf + whatever little extra expansions we feel like (e.g. animal powers are awesome and allways being used.). We still haven't checked out Mistwood but I'm super looking forward to that.
I have 200+ games in my collection, Everdell is waay to hardcore for me lol. Last time I played was online, I ended up watching TH-cam videos while my opponent finished...for 25 minutes. I then sold my sealed Complete Collection box knowing it was not for me lol.
I'll go a step further! I don't want to play one of my favorite game...because life need to move on lol I'm talking about Gloomhaven. It's an amazing game, that I don't need to play anymore. I've done everything with the game (and yes I also did the secret puzzle). But for answering the real question, for me it would also be Everdale...and I realized it AFTER I received the giant 100lb box, I was sorting it and I was like...whelp....that might stay there now. And it's like you said, not because it's a bad game...just because, ain't for me I think. The other 2 for me would be the pandemic series and the Forbidden series. It's a fun topic to explore, they are all great game, it's just that taste change, and I think I'm more honest and align with my ''gaming taste'' now. When I started the hobby I was looking out at what OTHER found great without really knowing what I founded great. And now, with lots of success and error, I know really more what I want from a game. But I don't regret any of those buys, not even that giant box, worst case scenario, it's a really great gift to someone.
I think the “time to move on from a game” is perfectly valid. Takes nothing away from that games greatness, sometimes you just move into a new chapter
I wonder what the blurred thumbnail game is???
A few of the games I could see ways around.
Blood Rage - take the challenge to catch up or play with some other people new to the game.
Everdell - don’t give in to the pressure to get every expansion or keep up. Just play.
That being said, I imagine in your position you get to play enough games that you do need to leave some games behind and these reasons are good enough for that. Heck, even as someone that only plays a few games I can admit that there are times to move on and enjoy something new. Good video Mike!
You’ll never be able to guess!
Yeah that’s really it. Nick and I have always played a large range of games and now of course with this being our job there’s so much to keep up with so a lot of those games that require/reward heavy investment are gonna be tough. Not the games fault at all
So wrong on Everdell! Nonetheless thank you for the video!
Cheers! And the fun part is I CANT be wrong in this video because it’s just my feelings on the game :) glad you dig everdell!
@@TheBrothersMurph excellent reply! Indeed!
Oh, my, I just had the same experience with Twilight Struggle! I do love history and lived through much of the Cold War, but I just didn't find the game to be fun. Mechanically, it's just tedious -- add influence, reduce influence, rinse repeat etc, etc and so on. I had a similar experience with Spirit Island so that would also be on my list.
Spirit Island works for us but I do see the comparison
Spirit Island is the most acclaimed game that I owned and sold. Tedious is exactly the right word. Too fiddly and too much upkeep for a fun cooperative experience (for my tastes anyway).
Some say "it is not you it is me because there are legit personal differences" I just dont' match with some games like 7th Continent, El Grande, & Beyond the Sun. Others say it is because they see the flaws of their ex-partner and noone would believe it in their mutual friend group because the ex is the golden perfect game that could do no wrong and just to make it easier with their friends they say "it is not them it is me". That is how I feel about a lot of popular games but I wouldn't say any of them out loud... (Everdell, Gloomhaven, Brass... oh woops)
Mine is a bit contentious, but it's Catan. I don't care how many more expansions they make, I've more than had my time with it.
I'm right there with ya
I would have loved for Mike to have namedropped a few games that he preferred over Lords of Waterdeep. I keep being drawn back to LOWD but would happily be talked into “more modern” worker placement quest filling games. What do you all think replaces Lowd?
I’m thinking I’m gonna do a supplemental video offering up alternative games to the ones I listed here. I probably should’ve thought of that for the original video! So stay tuned.
@@TheBrothersMurph Looking forward to it. Maybe you also need a: “Games that KILLED other games… that have also, subsequently been killed…” (Thunderstone? Quacks?…)
