Dr. Dray nails it again. ❤ Water aerobics covers so many of these topics. Working out without pain. Playing in the water like kids. Socialization! Singing if you wish with a group of energetic fun people, which makes your brain work to remember the lyrics. Laughter! People who notice when you miss a day. Wish I’d started when I was younger, but sure love it now.
Volunteering is my other love. 😊

Thank you again Dr. Dray! It’s incredible how impactful the social aspect truly is. People have an innate need for each other; socializing, and relationships. I’ve been off of social media for about 4 years now, and haven’t missed it. In fact, I’m shocked that I’ve actually been told to check their Facebook page when o ask people what’s going on in their life (you know, to have a conversation). Health is a WHOLEistic approach, we cannot forget that. Thank you for your amazing content!!

Very impressed with your shining a spotlight on #5 & showing genuine concern for the many people affected by it.
I read a heart-breaking story last year about the staggering number of elderly people in the UK who don't have a single person-to-person interaction in an entire week (or was it month?😢) The govt was trying to do something about that with a program of some sort but everybody can help by visiting their isolated parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents, friends, neighbors, former co-workers regularly especially if they're ailing, live alone or in a nursing home or assisted living apt.
Also good to contact the activities director at one of these places and ask what you could do to brighten these mostly seniors' day. One told me the residents love to have calendars - with great photos - on the wall to look at, interesting books; one requested a Bible. They did crafts including painting Easter eggs one time so I brought some supplies. Ideally we could visit them for real live interactions and wheeling them outside for some fresh air and some sun to boost their Vitamin D and hopefully the school kids still go and sing Christmas carols like we all did years ago (& that overkill covid restrictions aren't still blocking any of this anywhere)
Every little bit we all do will help them and the teens and 20-somethings. And help us.

Thank you for highlighting the impact of isolation on health. Our bodies are wired for connection (evolutionarily speaking, being in community helped us maintain safety and sense of security). When we lack connection, our nervous systems become overactive, stress hormones are released, and over time our immune systems are depressed, placing us at risk for illness. Positive social interactions are so vital for our health!

A bit of an unrelated topic:
Your videos made me wear sunscreen religiously.
I had to fight against a racial attack last Sunday and I wore sunscreen. The slipperiness of the sunscreen on my skin helped me quite some bit to defend myself. It was difficult for the attacker to grab me properly.
In short, sunscreen gave me some sort of protection and advantages in self-defence.
Thank you so much for helping me to getting into this live-saving habit.

      @sigridurlennartsdottir4416 ปีที่แล้ว +33

Babysteps. Week1 just intentionally get outside your house for a minute to practice, preferably in the morning. It may sound silly, but it means you have to go through the process of getting ready. Like getting dressed, putting on the shoes, where are the keys etc. Pyjamas does not count. Aim for everyday, but don’t be to hard on yourself if you don’t get outside all days. The days it doesn’t happen: note your resistance. How is your mind justifying not getting out? What thoughts and feelings do you have?
Week2, walk around the block. Important for your health and sleep to get real daylight on your face.
Keep this up for week3 and 4 too. Whenever you feel ready, expand the walk by going two rounds instead of one.
Reward yourself when you get inside, like with a nice cup of tea or relax with your favorite series.
Week5, plan to go for a beverage or meal at the nearest coffeeshop / restaurant. Sit there for the duration of the beverage/meal. No takeout! This is for one of the days of this week. The other days, walk around the block. If you feel the need to postpone, note your resistance. What your thoughts and feelings are against going. Can you make it easier on yourself by going at a time of the day when it is not so busy? You know it is important to not become a recluse, can you go anyways?
Make sure you can relax afterwards when you get home. Like after a workout, you need to rest. Because now you are training your social muscles. Well done!
Week 6, again go somewhere for a meal or beverage. The same place is fine, but this time go with a mission. It is easy to get caught in your own thoughts, so during your meal / beverage or standing in line, your mission is to observe people. Well not in a weird way, just see how much you can remember about someone from a 1-2 second look. What is the person wearing? Is there some accessory or piece of clothing that catches your eye? Or any special mood or feature that sticks out?You dont need to get all of it, one detail is ok. At least one observation per week. You can take another look to confirm if what you remembered was right, but just briefly, like a second or two.
When you get home, you can forget about the observation - or if you are the creative type, maybe it could inspire something. Like a painting or a drawing or a story. If you enjoy sewing clothes, maybe the design for a piece of clothing or accessory can bear traces of something you liked in the observation. Or you just forget all about it and focus on relaxing. You did well and can congratulate yourself! All other days of the week, walk around the block. If you need variation, pick a nearby place to walk to.
Week 7 and 8 repeat the goals of week 6
Week 10, now try two visits out of home for this week. One during a weekday and one during the weekend. Is there some place you have wanted to go during the pandemic that is now open again? Make an observation on each visit.
Repeat this for week 11 and 12. Remember to reward yourself and relax afterwards.
Week 13 add a quick errand. Get a snack or a meal from a drive through, or to the grocery shop. Maybe buy som fresh bread from a bakery?
This means three visits per week, or two and a half if you go to the drive through. That is just sitting in the car :) Keep the three visits per week up. All other days, walk around the block or in the local area.
      You got this.

Great video, Dr. Dray! Making new social connections is something I am actively working on. While I've always been introverted and am recharged by solitude, I've become quite isolated since retiring during the pandemic. I've heard that some colleges allow people over a certain age to audit classes for free or reduced tuition, and I plan to sign up for a conversational Spanish class this fall at my local community college. I have previously taken two years of French and two years of Japanese and found the interactions with students of all ages and learning more about other cultures very fun and stimulating! P.S. same here on having been content with solitude but have been getting the message loud and clear on the importance of socialization and friendships for longevity. Though I have a built-in best friend with a husband, I knew I needed more and learned that there are social apps for friend making , similar to apps for dating (i.e. Bumble). I'm happy to say I've made 2 new friends and we've had several fun girl trips together. I think it's beneficial for my marrige too!

This was a good one. I like hearing about other aspects of being healthy in addition to products. I have a couple of books on Blue Zones and the emphasis on activity and social relationships was striking.
Social media and iPhones worry me a lot too. I’m 42 and don’t grow up with that. I had a pager past the point of decency according to boyfriends 😂. I worry about kids who don’t know any different. You learn so much from real life interactions and cues. Texting is NOT the same as hanging out. I sometimes fantasize about getting rid of the iPhone- the main thing I’d miss would be google maps.
Anyways- it’s always nice to hear your thoughts Dr. Dray.

Lots of great and useful information. Thank you! I wonder when is too late to make changes for these benefits. Yes, the research is shocking to me! I've always heard that socializing is important to mental health but only now have I heard the physical health relativity! Dr. Dray, this is in my opinion, one the top 10 videos you have produced! Great information everyone can take and use for a better life. Thank you for such a powerful message.

Dancing! I decided to take up Latin dancing with some West Coast Swing thrown in. Starting in July. Great for both socialization and movement. I teach yoga, eat really well, bike, and strength train, but partner dancing is a game changer. It's not expensive and you learn something new with others.

This is my favorite video that you have done, Dr. Dray! Such good well rounded advice that, in the quest for the perfect cream or serum, so many don’t think about, including myself! And so many good quotes from “Wrinkles are a sign that youVe made it” to “anti social” media. Thank you for being a voice of reason!😊

Dr Dray, thank you for this information. You've mentioned the "marinating in acid" tip before, and i'm wondering if that could theoretically include a quick *dip* in something acidic as well? I often have a hard time resisting certain fried foods in my family's SE Asian cuisine, but those deep-fried dishes are usually dipped into vinegar (with crushed garlic and black pepper, or vinegar with soy sauce, sometimes other spices as well). Taste-wise, it seems to cancel out the oiliness. But i'm hoping it might benefit in the way you mention as well, and not just need a full marinade...

Great video. Very comprehensive. ❤ I have the sleep and glow but the height is too low for side sleeping with is such a shame. Face saved but neck pain when I use it. I need it to be slightly higher for side sleeping. Love the look of the ventilated comforters - I need to try that!

I volunteer at a sheltered accommodation for elderly people in the UK and it's one of the best, most rewarding and inspirational experiences ever. The stories elderly people have to tell are amazing.
I was surprised by the statistics though (and I say this as a 10 cigarettes a day smoker). Great video dr. Dray! Much love from the UK!

Two of my older relatives (in their late 70s) declined so rapidly once they became isolated; it was absolutely heartbreaking. It happened so fast that we never even had time to fix it.
On the other hand, my in-laws are over 80 but are so youthful, curious, healthy, active, flexible, smart, vibrant, and social. They go out often, travel, visit friends, go to dinner, take classes, all of that (safely, of course). They're in better shape physically, mentally, and emotionally than most 50 year olds I know. I genuinely love hanging out with them.

    • @BarbaraT.

@@JillKnapp Hey! Regarding your two old relatives who rapidly declined, I know what that must have been like because I'm going through the same thing with my mum, 79 yearsold, atm.
About 2 ½ months ago she was relatively fine, self-sufficient, independent, then she fell and broke her hip, got surgery and started going from one hospital to the other. The downward spiral began and today she's unrecognizable 🥺. It's like she aged 20 years, physically AND mentally! So sad to watch! I've been crying a lot lately.
I'm glad your in-laws are in such a great shape: where I volunteer there are people like that and it's a pleasure to talk to them and even just watch them 💖.
      Have a great day!
