Would have been better to see the brackets being fitted in position or even see the finished job.
If you take the whole stack down from the top you would leave a whole in the roof that it went thru, as I did :(

Why not just tear down the chimney? If it's been rendered useless, it would make sense to remove it and would be one less thing to maintain every few years.

Its cheaper to fit gallow brackets than to bring down the whole chimney and close the then open roof

This was the plan with mine however my neighbour who shares the chimney and uses a gas fire so by law I couldn't remove the chimney or cap of my side leaving no options to fit this type of system

Dont you need to support the stack while you put the gallows brackets in.

Need help, suggestions for opening of chimney back wall in kitchen to place a cooker and use of extraction fan. Front side chimney is in dining area. No party wall.
    All suggestions welcomed.

Dont ever tear down any remaining chimney breast and esp. the stack.
The stack allows the house to retain its character and some council areas wont allow stacks to be removed.
To those of you looking for tearing down for ease of maintenance in the coming years; why not go and live in a plastic box?

We moved into a house with chimney breast removed , fallow brackets fitted to support the stack ,, now the stack is leaning due to the gallows being attached to the shared with my neighbours wall and in turn the wall cannot support the weight of the stack ,, my advice is remove it all,, it seems gallow brackets are a temporary solution ,, we are getting stack / chimney removed
