Buddy most often played a 24" bass drum, (at least from the 50's on), and was looking to move up to a 28"(!) before he passed a way. This drum he's playing here was a 26", part of a beautiful set that had been refinished and presented to him as a gift from an admiring fan. He loved those old Radio Kings...(He also spoke well of the Rogers drums that both he and Louie Bellson had played during the 1960's.)
Although this may not be the type of music I'm playing or listening to all the time, I have to express my utter excitement and deep respect - not only for Buddy, but also for all these fantastic musicians in this band. THIS IS A GAS! Hats off...
Say, did anyone out there see Buddy live at a little jazz club in Studio City, California, called "Mulberry Street" sometime in about 1983? He played in a trio with, I believe, Roger Kellaway on piano and I think Chuck Berghoffer on bass. In the audience was Fred Gruber (that was the first time I saw Fred in person). I'd love to see some video of that gig, if there is any out there! Thanks for posting this! The first time I saw Buddy live was at Disneyland, in around 1979. Life changer.
ahhh... those were the days, to be able to see musicians like buddy rich and count basie up close and personal at disneyland's carnation gardens' stage. when i saw buddy and basie, it wasn't all produced like this vid. no mc or lighting, just buddy and the guys simply blowin'! my friends and i would go to the park just to see the legends. the rides were secondary.
Steve marcus played at my brother's wedding in 1989! I have the photos! didn't realize it until 2-3 years ago when I chanced to be looking at thsoe photos.
HES THE KING ! MAN !! SAW him many many times over the years Coped a lot of licks from the Master of Swing. I have the recording at Chicago fest years ago he was the opening act he played so fast it was unreal. WIND MACHINE lasted a good 20 min He Kiked it ! I sure miss him Ed Man
Imagine, getting to see the greatest drummer for $5.50. Incredible! I got to see him one time in time 79' . What I saw inspires me to this day! Thanks.
I got to see him only once in 79' and what I saw inspires me every time I play. I have other favorites but Buddy to me is the ultimate class! Thanks for commenting!
Wow, I played here every year with my jr. High band. Never realized it had this great of history. In two days were going to play at Disneyland, but it's at a new stage. I really wished I had known this history when I played on that beautiful stage. What a shame to tear it down.
I really don't know. I've been lucky to have members of his band post comments and personal messages, all of which they are very respectful of Bud's memory and regard their time with him as one of the great experiences of their career. Thanks!!!
Great Tune He Opened with this at the Chicago Jazz Fest the one and only time he ever played and opened the fest. It was totally awesome ! Man I miss Buddy he was a huge influence on my playing to this very day ! Ed Man
starting at 6:48 Buddy starts a left handed roll that is faster than most drummers these days can pull off using both hands lol sounds like a damned machine gun.
I thought the same thing for a while, but the pitch doesn't change any, I think Bud just wanted it pumped right at the downbeat of the head. Thanks my friend!
Buddy played a wood shell snare most of his career. Although, when he first went with Slingerland, he wasn't happy with their snare so he stuck with the Fibes snare he had been playing prior to the switch to Slingerland. The Rogers kit with the Dynasonic snare he played for a few years during the early sixties was the sweetest IMO.
Yeah! You're right. He's got the look of TOTAL joy and victory. That spirit never left him. Some people say he got bored or apathetic in later years. I don't buy it. This man was an inspiration when I was younger, it's even more profound now. This miracle of technology allows us to see and hear artists like Buddy. Time is the ultimate judge of all things. The man was put on this earth to play drums. I saw him in 79' and I'll never forget it! Thanks for commenting :)
@twinsmm1 Buddy went back to playing the "classic" Slingerland "radio king" drumset for the last few years of his life.I did see him playing a wood snare in the 70's. His all-time favorite snare drum was the Fibes fiberglass SFT snare drum!!!!
@sticktrik...I traveled with him in the 70's...his all time favorite snare was the Rogers Dyna Sonic wood...stolen off the stage in London while he was with Harry James..
Sticktrik is absolutely correct, Slingerland Radio Kings! According to what Buddy told Larry King, those drums were 40 years old when he acquired them. I don't think you can see it in this vid, but in the Channel One Set and Lost Tapes DVD, you can see that the tom mount is the old fashioned kind that clipped on to the bass drum hoop. Also, though I can't be sure, I think the bass is a little bigger than the 20" he normally played.
Well, it's April 29, 2012 and I'm headed off to Disneyland to pay homage to the Carnation Plaza Gardens. There will be a high school big band performance tonight and tomorrow after closing they will tear down this historical venue to make way for something else. Progress and change. Saw Buddy play here all through 70's and 80's. Magic is too tame a word for it. R.I.P.
Wow! I never thought they would change the Gardens. I guess all things must change. It IS a landmark. Thanks for posting this!!! p.s. I wish I was going with ya...
Buddy looks like he just got off a yacht or something, them came down to the park to do the gig! But I guess he could dress however he pleased, even at D Land. Peter Marshall kind of pointed that out! I wish Disney would bring back the big name Big Bands in the summer, if there are any left. The 70's and 80's were awesome in the summer at Plaza Gardens.
Within a year after this my college jazz ensemble had them as guest artists at our concert. The solo tpt player (the one shown here) was kind of a tool, but little did he know his little inside jokes about playing in "Joe Besser's band" didn't go over my head.
6:35 - 6:50 the singles with that killer instinct then the crazy left hand...man...I try but...never. The sooner one checks out what's possible, the sooner the world is his or hers...not enough people know about Buddy Rich!!! The best...plain and simple
You're probably right! Later in the show all the guys are just dripping everywhere. Plus the extra camera lighting. They demonstrate such professionalism by simply playin their ass off without complaint. Total inspiration for me. thanks for commenting!!
I've never seen Buddy in shorts!!!! It looks like his balls are going to fall out of the bottom of them!!!! LOL He's as amazing as ever and never disappoints...what a god!!!!!
RIGHT......usually a 24" bass...20" was a typo on my part. Those old Radio Kings had a beautiful sound all their own, one that, like Buddy, Gene and Louie, is probabably gone forever.
My Dad and I used to stand in the same spot over several summers for Buddy's band and Louie Bellson's band. If you stop this clip at 5:32, that sure looks like my Dad in the upper left of the frame, as fuzzy as it is. Buddy used to give us drummers over there to his right winks and looks that said, "watch this" or "how was that?". Fun stuff! Where did this clip come from?
Looking at the Wikipedia site it mentions the Buddy Bootleg Tape eposide and mentions that at that time you could not enter the Disneyland park if you wore a beard, therefore rich wanted Panichi to loose the beard. He seems to be cleanshaven here.Could this be true? Were'nt the Band Bus Tapes around that time.
I know buddy sometimes spedup his tempos,But on the wind machine the tempo increases very quickly from the Pno.intro, then settles down? mabie a problem with the tape, strange.

You get the idea that he's listening closely to every note everyone is playing!

Buddy once played Love for sale for me as a request in Derby in the UK.........quite a moment having a legend produce genius on the spot !
I got to see him only once in 79' and what I saw inspires me every time I play. I have other favorites but Buddy to me is the ultimate class! Thanks for commenting!

Yeah, Dave was incredible! I know that he and Buddy, Steve Marcus, George Gesslein, Barry Keiner are all swingin in heaven! Thanks!!
Yes, those were the days!! Thanks!
I really don't know. I've been lucky to have members of his band post comments and personal messages, all of which they are very respectful of Bud's memory and regard their time with him as one of the great experiences of their career. Thanks!!!
Miss Paul Phillips terribly. He was a talented musician, great personality.
Great Tune He Opened with this at the Chicago Jazz Fest the one and only time he ever played and opened the fest. It was totally awesome ! Man I miss Buddy he was a huge influence on my playing to this very day ! Ed Man

I couldn't have said it better!! It is total finesse. Elegant and powerful at the same time. Thank you!!!

The first tune is "Wind Machine", made famous by Count Basie.
I know buddys left hand was always busy, but notice how he plays the cymbol rhythm a lot.
Yeah! You're right. He's got the look of TOTAL joy and victory. That spirit never left him. Some people say he got bored or apathetic in later years. I don't buy it. Wow! The exact venue where I met buddy in 1981.
This is the same group that is on the "Live on king street DVD" and this is a far better performance.
@twinsmm1 Buddy went back to playing the "classic"
Slingerland "radio king" drumset for the last few years of his

Wow, that must have been something!
this is just great...thanks so much

Wow! I never thought they would change the Gardens. I guess all things must change. It IS a landmark. Thanks for posting this!!! p.s. I wish I was going with ya...

@jsbruzina and the rest of the band is wearing uniform for him. lol
BR on the chest and everything. This guy had some balls.
Unbelievable; tighter than a ♀ teen on prom night. ♫
I think it's Paul Phillips. Personnel is in the info. panel. I think this is one of Bud's better bands!

Buddy looks like stewart copeland with those shorts
I know buddy sometimes spedup his tempos,But on the wind machine the tempo increases very quickly from the Pno.intro, then settles down? mabie a problem with the tape, strange.
