- Disneyland 84' Great Don Menza chart. Including bio piece and interview. Sit back and be amazed! Dave Carpenter on bass, the immortal Steve Marcus on tenor. Dave, Steve, George Gesslein, Paul Phillips are very missed! Bill Cunliffe on piano. Saxes: Steve Marcus, Mark Pinto, Bob Bowlby, Brian Sjoerdinga, Jay Craig
Bones: Mike Davis, Dave Panichi, George Gesslein
Trumpets: Paul Phillips, Tony Gorruso, Dana Watson, Todd Schwartz.
that sax soli NEVER gets old.
Great big band with a great drummer Buddy Rich driving them! Great tenor sax from Steve Marcus. RIP Buddy Rich and Steve Marcus.
Alphonse - You're a really great drummer too! I think Buddy would say the same thing. He really admired a lot of drummers and said as much. I read an interview of Buddy Rich in a British Jazz Journal a while back on the internet - where Buddy tells the two guys interviewing him that he had hired Philly Joe Jones at one time I imagine because he admired his playing. Very perplexing of course but I don't think he was fibbing. I'm going to try & find the interview again & re read it to see what led up to that statement.)
I'm curious to know if that story is really true. Why would Buddy hire another great drummer? To do a drum battle? I don't if he was kidding!
+Alphonse Mouzon - I was very puzzled too and now I'm curious too so I'm going to try and find it right now

the british jazz journal is still around but I can't seem to be able to retrieve the interview - I think they've eliminated the interview archives. the interview is still there but I would have to contact them via e mail etc. a hassle.. I do remember he said it, but nothing else... wish I had read it more carefully...I'm now thinking maybe his comment had something to do with his club in NY 'Buddy's Place' in the late 60's when Buddy was playing with guys like Sonny Criss, Kenny Drew, Kenny Barron, Sonny Fortune etc. Maybe when he said he had hired Philly Joe once he meant to play in his club. Anyway I also checked out Down Beat & found a great interview of Buddy in their archives - 4/11/74 - "Buddy Raps About...."
It's 4 pages long & the interviewer asks him only about drummers & he of course speaks his mind about just about every jazz drummer playing then: "Ginger Baker challenging Elvin Jones to a drum battle would be the same as a paraplegic challenging Arnold Palmer to a round of golf." If you haven't read it before you'll enjoy it.
Great example of pure brilliance. I'm glad I watched his interviews, where he shared his philosophy on work and life in general. Buddy had a incredible work ethic, worked every day, didn't allow anything to stand in his way. Great role model for others that aspire to the highest peaks of any endeavour. A quote, "music is all about love." What more can be said, absolutely inspiring. R.I.P Buddy and thank you for your contribution to music. Man this stuff still sounds amazing and will for years to come. People forget about computerised music, this is where it's at man. Peace.
Great! Buddy swings hard and never misses an accent. Awesome sax section chorus and Steve Marcus solo.
Thanks for these Disneyland posts! It's great to watch and hear Buddy and the band. It's almost like being there again. Refreshing for the soul.
5:09 I love how the lead player takes it up an octave ;)
man i LOVE this recording. being an 18 year old i never had the chance to hear him live. sadly. the rhythm section is ridiculous; Dave's bassline in this is crazy. i've been studying this recording for a month at least (my jazz director let me borrow one of his) and even now everytime i listen to it i pick up another cool harmony or melodic line. if only i could compare...
LOVE THE BASS PLAYING
+MichaelHansenFUN That was the late Dave Carpenter from Dayton, Ohio. He died unexpectedly of a sudden heart attack in 2008.
i have played this chart in my school band and its SICK, the solo is awesome and the bass line is awesome (cause i am a bass player)
I wish I could play sax. Then I could fantasize about playing the sax soli from this great chart!!! Thanks...........
awesome! started learning this chart tonight. i'm playing the bari sax part.... tough soli... lots of fun though...
Same !!!!
Well i play Bari Sax, and the high school jazz band is doing this song. An easier version to spare us poor saxes at the soli. I hope to learn the original soli too! I just don't know where to find the sheets!
Small world Paul, I was born in Hollywood but we lived all over the valley(Sun Valley, Arleta, Northridge) and Santa Monica/Anaheim until '71. Yeah, I'm a drummer and I don't think there's anybody with Buddy's PERFECT technique and just plain genious on the drum set. I've had the great pleasure of speaking to a number of guys who were in various bands of Buddy's and they all had very kind words about him. You have a cool channel!! Thanks, Steve
He truly lived up to his nickname of the beast. R.I.P.
While Mr. Rich is playing drums,he looks like a hawk! Making sure NO one is off beat or note.
@shvetes Thank you! I had this stuff on vhs sitting in the closet then I realised none of it was on the web. Many of the band members have asked for copies!
Dem saxes though...
6 people are apparently tone deaf!!!! :)
Steve Marcus is the man!!!!!
Wow that's cool! I never got to see Buddy at Disneyland. I saw him in OKC in '79. I did see Stan Kenton and Neal Hefti's band there at the Carnation Plaza. Thanks!!

Insane sax soli at 7:19. Gold. Buddy loved it, look at the smile on his face. "wow" at 7:36
Sadly, much of this band is dead now. Buddy, Steve Marcus, Paul Phillips (jazz trumpet), Dave Carpenter (bass), George Gesslein (bass bone).
Wow man, that's cool!
Thank you my friend!!
Cool video. Thanks beedoe51.
Has anyone transposed Steve Marcus's solo?
Exactly! :)
My lover theme!
song starts at 4:16
