Never heard of him before. I am impressed! It has always amazed me how these great drummers like Duffy, Buddy Rich, Louis Belson and Joe Morello, to name a few, played furiously while wearing a dress shirt, necktie and sport coat!

What gas! We taped Duffy in our studio (BRT Video/Recording) 40 years ago. He could scat with the best of them, too.

First saw Duffy Jackson in Puerto Rico in '74. I was playing drums with a lounge act and he was in the main showroom with Sammy Davis Jr. Saw him backstage before he went on. Here was this guy with a crewcut, thick glasses who walked with a noticeable limp. Think he had one built up shoe. I was wondering if this was a joke or gimmick. Then he went on and tore the place up, powering that big band. I was impressed! Later, in the mid 2000s saw him at Disneyland with a quartet. Very versatile & still impressed me.

I was super lucky to have had Duffy as a private lesson instructor! This was back in 2006 in Southeast Florida where he was living at the time. I was attending a jazz camp as a very brand new drummer and he made me feel right at home while I figured out this thing called jazz. 😂 he told me if Florida gets one more hurricane, He will move to Nashville and that is exactly what he ended up doing. Duffy told me to keep in touch but somehow that just slipped by the wayside and when I finally remembered to reach out, it was too late. What a superb talent and an even more superb person!

I saw the Basie band in January 1980 in Austin at the Armadillo World Headquarters. I was in the Air Force and had been battling a flu. But I couldn’t miss seeing Basie. Tickets were $7 and I sat on the floor in front of the stage. Duffy was the star that night. He had a great groove and was full of energy. I swear after the show I felt better immediately.

I was a teenager and met him with the band, coming through SUNY Purchase Summerfest. I was a young drummer and backstage intern. Got to meet Duffy and check out the whole show from backstage, it was overwhelming, in the best way possible, for a kid. I simply couldn’t believe what I was witnessing. Sadly, the count himself was out sick. Freddie Green was clearly very sad not having his old buddy around.

At the time I had not heard of Duffy . I was mesmerized by his playing , could not take my eyes off him. A superb player, his enthusiasm, joy for life and outstanding chops are well in evidence here.

It was great watching Basie being called out by old-timers from the neighborhood. He remembered many of them. It was very touching, as the public was grooving.
Truly one of the best concerts I every attended.

I just happened to accidentally run into him because I was dry docked while they were working on the cruise ships in Miami and staying at Mel Dancies' place in Miami Beach. Duffy was just hanging around. At that time, I was really young and wasn't even in the same solar system as Mel. The word was that he had gotten kicked out of Count Basie's band because he was "leading" the band and that was a no-no.

He spent quite a lot of time in South Florida leading his own small groups and playing with the U of Miami Concert Jazz Band, and sitting in on many local jazz gigs and concerts. I saw him play with Jimmy McGriff ( jazz organists) one time and the groove was so hard I thought the roof was going to come off the place.
