- I've made mistakes... I'm not proud of them, but I did. Now, I think it's time to come clean and explain why I've had a change of heart. Time to explain why I absolutely love Haunted Mansion Holiday...

I totally agree with you. And yes, it shouldn't be up until AFTER Halloween. It's absolutely a Christmas ride with the Holiday mods.
😂😂😂 no
Should be November to January.
Halloween and the haunted mansion should always be a thing.
THIS 100%. Not just because the haunted mansion is the perfect Halloween ride, but ALSO because it completely misses the plot of the movie. The whole point in the movie is that it's AFTER Halloween and Jack doesn't want to wait until Halloween to be relevant again. AFTER Halloween!
That all said, I'm ok with them keeping it into February if they need so that the overlay is worth doing the overlay. I know it's silly since Christmas is already passed, but I really just don't want to lose Haunted Mansion every Halloween. It's a superior Halloween theme.
Yeah why bring in Christmas stuff during Halloween time it makes no sense. It should start in November to early January
I mean the whole thing is its a mix of Halloween and Christmas, but froma. Logistical point of view it is becaus the time it takes to set up the overlay. They choose to set it up at one of the slowest times in the park (back to school) since it takes a while to set up- they wouldnt want it to be down near thanksgiving when the parks start picking up.
Magic kingdom lol
Edit: this comment was stupid
I love HMH and I feel vindicated by this video.... But I 💯 agree it should start immediately after Halloween in November
That opening alone is enough for a like! I was howling at the dramatic music, cutaways and fake crying over delivering a "life-altering confession"! 🤣🤣🤣
Seeing you get choked up by Haunted Holiday brought a tremendous amount of joy to my heart! Merry Christmas to you, the wife, and Meeko!
M
Burning Haunted Holiday candles all over the house while watching Offhand finally admits the beauty of Haunted Mansion Christmas overlay.....life is good!
The original soundtrack was a masterpiece. The children humming in the foyer and stretching room and the epicness of the ballroom are sooo much better than what came after 2003.
I agree, we need to see Jack Skellington in his *Pinstriped suit* somewhere in the HM then towards the end of the ride in his *Sandy Claws suit* BC we get in his pinstriped suit in a walk around / parade character. BTW another the holiday overlay (you probably did not realize you forgot or maybe just a brain fart) is the *Jingle Cruise* - kind of wish DL would bring that back too.
Follow Up Comment: I just watched a Haunted Mansion Holiday overlay from Toyoko Disneyland, I agree, theirs is a little bit better. However I feel that the *Grand Ballroom* is a little too dark. Also Zero is more represented throughout and Lock, Shock an Barrel are also more represented in theirs compared to DL. BTW I like how their *Doom Buggies* in the Portrait Hallway.
Vindication! Finally you see the haunted mansion holiday how it should be: a masterpiece
Meh
Feliz Navidad is just "Happy Christmas" in Spanish, Dalyn. It's not a different celebration ahahahah
Anyway, Happy Christmas.
He might’ve been getting wires crossed day of the dead. I’ve seen it happen before hehe
I think for Halloween, maybe have a Sanderson Sisters or Villains overlay, like the sing along video that also made me a Haunted Mansion superfan.
I understand the concern for how long it's up throughout the year, but the issue with having it only through December and halfway through January is that a lot of people who really want to see it and are working class cannot go during those times of year due to work. Personally, I know going in October is a lot easier for me. I think it just gives more opportunities for people who want to see it time to take off work and go see it.
Disney should abolish the 5-day work week planet wide which will allow folks to visit the disneyland parks year round more easily.
Someone talking about Haunted Mansion overlay? Yes please! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 My favorite part of the attraction is that Teddy is in almost all the scenes!!! And the Music Box is gorgeous. I love the idea of them slowly starting with Halloween and going towards the Holiday season. And I love the Holiday overlay for The Land, it's so adorable and gives it such festive vibes by using its surroundings. Thanks man for the fantastic video.
My one problem with Haunted Mansion Holiday, other than how long it's up, is that I actually think it's too extensive an overlay. You see, because it's so extensive it actually sometimes damages the base attraction. In the process of things getting moved out and then moved back in, or more generally changed and then changed back, little things often get lost or forgotten. If you've ever wondered what happened to some obscure prop or detail you vaguely remember, there's a good chance you can blame Haunted Mansion Holiday. Remember that extended period of downtime we had around the beginning of the year? Part of that was an attempt to fix all those little losses
Where in the world did you get this false idea? Things that are removed are done so intentionally. There is not forgetting to put them back.
@PsychGirlRaven I got this idea from numerous disney historians and it has been corroborated by official statements by Disney. You could at least pretend to look into these things
The free sleigh ride monster is from the This is Halloween song. He says "I am the one hiding under your bed, teeth sharp and eyes glowing red"
Just got back from Disney World, I love Living With the Land’s little overlay! Outside of the sandmen the extra stuff about holiday food that they grow was cool!
My kids just got to see the layover on 12/23 and it was amazing. We even got to see the “13” minute wait in the morning and night. They all loved it.
2 things:
1. I agree it’s Christmas themed not at all Halloween
2. Tell Disney to let me borrow the hitch hiking ghosts animatronics during the Christmas and Halloween season when they aren’t using then
Glad you are now a fan of the holiday overlay. I wish Disney did more holiday overlays in the parks and rides. It’d be neat to see holiday overlays for rides like Space Mountain, the people mover, Star Tours, and more.
Never been on Haunted Mansion in Disneyland or Holiday but I've always wanted to go. Thank you for this video and Merry Christmas! 🎅👍
I read the title and my immediate thought was “glad you finally admitted it”
He’s just lying to himself, and us.
I'm glad you've had a change of heart. Haunted Mansion Holiday, specifically, is my favorite ride!
“You know, I think he (Walt Disney) might have been a horror fan.”
Yeah, I’m sure he was. He does have the elements from the films he saw, from German Expressionism, to creating monsters (like the Old Hag from Snow White) that rival that of Dracula and The Mummy.
And yeah, for other obvious examples, are the Devil from “Fantasia.”
"Less christmas, more Halloween" okay I'm sold, always up for some spookiness.
I totally agree about the timing - I can't understand why they don't wait until November to add it. It's very cool - we saw it once (with the scrim!) But we were there in December so that was just right.
Iv never clicked on a video so fast.
You can literally talk about the Haunted Mansion wallpaper for 20min and I will watch. 10/10 always
The level of detail that goes into the Haunted Mansion holiday overlays are unbelievable.
I love this ride with all my heart, like seriously. It makes me super happy whenever I see it decorated. Even though it is just a ride, I feel like it is my everything. Sometimes I dream to have a mansion just like that one, so I can decorate the exact same throughout the years.
The fact that I leave a lot of your Haunted Mansion videos wanting to riding Living with the Land is really a talent of yours 😂😂😂
I appreciated the 10:55 commentary where you said “Handmade” and we saw that ghoulish hand. Noice.
the smell in the ballroom is literally my favorite smell of all time, it doesn't feel just like gingerbread, it's a bit more pumpkinny and its amazing and the magic candle is the only thing that got me through not being able to go to dl
one of the reasons they leave it up for those months is that it takes so long to get everything on and off of it that it most likely won't meet its dead line to open up
About the spooky side of Christmas: it was done away so recently that Andy Willaims' "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" from 1963, still a perennial favorite, includes the line "there'll be scary ghost stories".
I agree about the overlay, the reason I have issues with it is that it swallows the Mansion on Halloween, the best time of year to go to the regular HM.
I think this is the most underrated Disney TH-cam channel.
Dope video. And your transitioning Halloween-Holiday is the perfect idea.
He has seen the light
People have a right to change their minds. Good for you for coming to this conclusion! And YES! Please give a play-by-play ride-through of the HM Holiday Overlay. I’d also love a look at the 20 years of gingerbread houses in the ballroom scene.
I can't believe offhand Disney made a apology video
Merry Christmas/Holiday Weekend Dallin!🙌
Hope the season is cheerful for you🙂
I do think the ride overlay should start on November 1st- I mean, even in the movie Jack doesn’t start his little self-improvement journey until AFTER Halloween. The first scene is him returning from a successful Halloween.
That being said, I LOVE both versions and get equally excited to see either of them. Haunted Mansion Holiday gives such awesome vibes on the outside and is very cute and fun on the inside. Plus I love getting to see that Imagineer get to play Leota like her mom, and the gingerbread houses are always great. And obviously the original is untouchable.
Creepy Christmas.
Haunted Holidays.
Scary Christmas.
Theres so much potential i never realized
Back in year two of HMH, they tied in a weekly pin release schedule to the attraction, so each week they revealed a new limited edition pin you could purchase at the parks. You know the 13(?) gift boxes at the doom buggy loading area, where all the Nightmare characters are popping out? In week one, only one box was open, character/pin revealed, then each week after, they would open and reveal one new character. My family definitely booked trips 3 out of 4 weekends that November to collect those pins, so, to your point, they've definitely tried a gradual, repeat booking-encouraging, enhancement strategy. Can't remember what the year one loading area looked like at this point 🤔
The idea of gradually going from Halloween to Xmas bugs bc I don’t want to spend extra $ to see the complete concept. Not all are able to be daily guest.
Thank you for this Christmas gift of a vlog tho! Happy Christmas & Merry New Year! 🎃🎄☠️✨
I think the issue with shortening the holiday overlay is the condensed amount of people that may be there at one time. I would assume they spread it out the way they do maybe to prevent too many people at one particular time of the year especially with the time period being prime time for people to have work and school off.
I could agree with that assessment. Especially since you don’t want to have too many guests occupy the mansion in a certain period of the season. But at the same time…I take issue with them closing down classic haunted mansion mid August…it’s still summer and the mansion should be still operating…Halloween is starting way too early in the United States. Why does Mickey’s not so scary start in august? Why is Halloween time starting Labor Day weekend at Disneyland (which actually is still part of summer since fall doesn’t start till September 21st). At this point..I wouldn’t be shocked if Disneyland/Magic Kingdom started the Halloween season late July (which I think that’s pushing it). But those are two small criticisms. Just my opinion. I love both versions. The haunted mansion holiday is a welcomed treat to experience during the season. The classic haunted mansion attraction is a welcomed sight during the year.
I just think we as a collective society need to tone down celebrating holidays months before it starts or else people will get burnt out. Costco already has Christmas (it’s august). I will just leave it at that.🤷🏻♂️
Nightmare before christmas fans be like: "Ladies and gentlemen, we got em."
I was so ready to watch this video but I was working. Bless my lunch! I'm ready to hear his thoughts. I did get stuck in front of Zero barking for awhile earlier this month. Kinda annoying but still love the ride! Got to do an in show exit which was fun! :)
Edit: I recognize the clips from the imagineers cause I watched those DVD extras nonstop when I was little. Oh the flashbacks!
I finally got to do Haunted Mansion Holiday and it was lots of fun! My dad’s more of a classic Haunted Mansion fan himself, so he thought it was okay (so did my mom).
Also, the music box during the night makes the queue kind of unsettling.
I feel like the reason they keep it up from September to January is because the holiday season is peak season at Disneyland. If they closed one of their biggest rides during peak season to do the overlay it’s gonna cause a lot of traffic. I do agree though having it up in October to me is kinda silly since it’s much spookier and Halloweenyer normally.
I agree with you about MOST of the things you said. Yes, a holiday overlay to the Haunted Mansion looks incredible and fits it perfectly, but a mainly IP-based overlay sort of ruins the mood for the classic attraction.
As a young animatronic builder (btw your knowledge has helped me to get into this working field:) I got the task to design a ride. I take your suggestions into account. A developing ride has a certain appeal. Thank you very much!
On my first Disneyland trip a few years back I was going in the fall, but had never seen Nightmare Before Christmas. After seeing the movie and then going on the ride, the ride is really impressive. It’s way more than just an overlay.
Thank you, Dallon! It always hurt my heart that you didn’t like Haunted Mansion Holiday. Glad you’ve come around.
I agree with you. It is not to be missed. They should have it themed Christmas for longer!
The only thing that I don’t like about the top screen is the bad 3D animation they have of Jack that just looks very off and I hate it
"I'm not going to do a play-by-play of the entire attraction unless you guys want that........ " Great way to sneakily get me to comment. Of course I want that
We want, nay need! that full ride movie...make it happen :D
The only clear solution is for them to build a 2nd show building and just switch the hallway back and forth. They could even do other overlays throughout the year, and you could get in a different line to see the normal classic version.
It would cost way too much. I mean the current mansion show building (the “mega mansion”) is massive as is. There would be no room for another show building because you have the chillers, the pirates show building, and other backstage areas that they need to use.
I NEVER knew up until a few years ago that WDW did not have Haunted Mansion Holiday! I remember going as a kid and French Market had collector's items and had gingerbread sculptures too so we had to go every week (13 weeks) that it was open to collect them all! It was a lot of fun! (and A LOT of work!)
I’m glad that some of those three spirts from the Haunted Mansion Holiday has finally changed your mind and heart about what The Haunted Mansion Holiday really is: The greatest creation and Masterpiece that was ever been created. And I’m glad that you finally have a change of heart! Merry Christmas and have a Happy New Year too! Well as a matter of fact, next year which is 2022 will not be a good year it will be very worse than 2020 but it will be really good too just like 2020 and 2021 since those years are the years of light!
I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE. What an amazing Christmas present. Merry Christmas sir, you deserve a most magical Christmas
The fact that Christmas takes over THE quintessential halloween ride of all time DURING halloween is an abomination. I agree with you about timing. The mansion should close November 1 and reopen mid-November with HMH. Also, re the projector in the stretching room - the quality and technology of projectors has exploded in the last few years. Just look at the projections in Runaway Railway. The projections effect in the stretching room could be fantastic if they upgraded the tech (and the underlying content may need to be upscaled to 8k). Not sure why this hasn't happened (Cough-Chapek-Cough). Thanks for making this - I have also softened on HMH over the years, but it is still no replacement for the original and is around WAY too long.
"I still think it's there for too long but it's really really good" about sums up my feelings on the overlay, lol
It shouldn't go up until after Halloween. I do prefer the original better, yet I can't deny that the overlay is really good. The screen will never replace the scrim.
i love watching videos about the holiday overlay but it always reminds me of the time when i chickened out of riding it when i was a little kid. i was so terrified of jack skellington that i didn't even make it into the stretching room 😭
6:18 Originally it was actually going to be themed around A Christmas Carol but imagineers realized it would be weird for a story set in 19th century London be the overlay for a ride set in an early 1900's New Orleans Victorian mansion.
Merry Haunted Christmas to you and yours, OffhandD!
We have no choice now, we have to cancel you.
Order 66 Offhand Disney
My guess would be that they put it up before Halloween because it takes like a month to get everything set up since it’s so detailed. That doesn’t really fit with their normal quick turnaround between Halloween and Holiday, especially since they have the whole rest of the two parks to do.
And your idea for switching it up and doing a slow transition is similar to how I’ve wanted to decorate my house for the fall/winter months! I just… do not have the energy to make everything I would need for it
My husband is friends with Brian Sandahl, he also designed a lot of the holiday decorations throughout the park.
Merry Christmas!A HAPPY NEW YEAR! Offhand Disney
the sleigh ride guy is clearly "the one hiding under your bed, teeth ground sharp and eyes glowing red" ;)
I agree with you 100%. I wish they would hold off on all the super Christmas decor till later. On another note: do you know if the glitter on the gingerbread house is edible?
I loveeeee when Dalin gets all crazy😂 HOW COME NO ONE IS TALKING ABOUT THIS😂
I appreciated your comments about Haunted Mansion Holidays and would be open to more Halloween elements! However I really appreciate having it around for Halloween as it epitomizes the Hallowthanksmas season!
Just got back from Disneyland this week. We can only visit once a decade or so because we come from New Zealand. When we booked we didn't know the overlay would be there. I'm a huge fan of The Nightmare Before Christmas movie, but also a huge fan of the Mansion. I was kinda bummed out as I wanted to see the classic.
When I rode Haunted Mansion Holiday I thought it was okay but I think it should only be there from November 1st to December 31st
I have been in both Haunted Mansion and Haunted Mansion Holiday. I agree with you the over doing of Holiday. I plan to visit The Haunted Mansion Holiday on Christmas Day.
But it supposed to rain. What do you think that I am some kind of Pansay? No wallflower I most assuredly am not. I have planned for a very heavy deluge and I will see you there.
Living with the land holiday is probably what I’m looking forward to the most on my next WDW trip 👀
Totally agree on the timeframe opinion and Halloween overlay
I agree with your ideas and I think they are quite sensible.
This wasn’t mentioned in the video, but it came to mind. Even if they didn’t do The Nightmare Before Christmas, if they tied in the Krampus legend into a holiday version of the Haunted Mansion (but tweaked it to fit into the house and not traumatize children), it would be interesting. Also, the Christmas Carol retelling sounds like a neat concept, and now I want to experience Haunted Mansion Holiday in person
I think for Halloween they should make a muppet over lay because of the new Halloween special I think it would give a cool funny spooky contrast especially during Halloween
Dallin! You are my new favorite TH-camr! 🤗 Keep up the good work! Would you ever do a q&a video for your subscribers?
They do a q&a on his haunted Mansion podcast homie
I would go just for the gingerbread house.
Would definitely love a ride through with the overlay.
The exquisite original mansion grandfather clock with backward moving hands. As long as that’s there everything will be okay.
I would really like an extra spooky version of the original ride for Halloween, like 50th anniversary but with the Jack’ O lanterns and candles still there
I went on it and… it’s amazing, still yet to ride it’s regular form though…
enjoyed the video! Merry Christmas !!!🎄🏰☃
I love Haunted Mansion Holiday, but I agree that it is around way too long. Still love it though. This is very unlikely but what I would like to see, is Disney taking inspiration from both the 30th and 50th Anniversary of the Mansion and put in live actors for Halloween. Kind of turning it into a small scale HAUNT attraction. That be cool, but again very unlikely.
Lol, I have some friends who went to Disney world this past fall and their biggest disappointment? They didn't realize there was no Haunted Mansion Holiday there!
There was plans actually for it to happen but it was rejected.
It takes a solid man to publicly change his mind. Great work. 🤘🏽. Haunted Mansion Holiday is a fantastic undertaking IMO
Some of us may never get to actually SEE the Holiday overlay in the CA park, so please please PLEASE give us a ride-through play-by-play! 😍
i’m begging you please do a complete play by play of haunted holiday!!!!
They need to bring back the holiday layover for Space Mountain Halloween.
Also I saw the 2019 gingerbread house and I was awestruck.
best overlay in the park fight me
Finally, my boy. You've seen the light.
Somehow, I always thought Nightmare Before Christmas and the Haunted Mansion were a match made in heaven!
Haunted Mansion Holiday is my favorite Disney Parks experience.
Hi, Dallin. I couldn't come up with another way to contact you as I don't have a Twitter account, so I'm commenting here. I have a few ideas regarding what should be done with Splash Mountain and Critter Country. This is what I think should be done: Bring an end to Critter Country and re-theme the Hungry Bear restaurant to a Cajun style restaurant or Tiana’s Place restaurant. As for Winnie the Pooh ride re-theme it. Make it a ride through the Bayou with Louis, Ray, Tiana & the Prince as frogs. Change the ride car bodies from a bee hive to Louis on has back playing his trumpet. Re-theme the insides of the ride to a bayou swamp and use the songs from the move. Re-theme the rest of the shops in that quarter in a bayou team as well. I think this would become one of the most popular parts of New Orleans Square. I hope to see one of your great videos on this topic soon.
I’m inclined to think you were right the first time, but loving NBC leads me to think having the overlay for the duration of the “…Holiday Celebration” would be ok.
