@@auldthymer The dark parts are actually holes. At the time Disneyland opened they didn't have character costumes, so Disney borrowed character costumes from Disney on Ice. The holes were there to help the ice skaters be able to see while performing.
The Horned King from The Black Cauldron might be the all time scariest. According to legend, he was debuted in the parks with Taran, Eilowny, and Gurgi in 1985 but immediately pulled because he was too scary. I can't find a picture anywhere.
He was probably just happy with what little they could muster up for the park’s opening days. Knowing his perfectionist approach, he probably would’ve thrown them away if he saw the later updated versions.
Jessica Rabbit costume is just terrifying… why the fake face? Why not a face actor? Disney, Dan was right about this, and we love Disney Dan over here at Offhand Disney.
She creeps me out too!! Something about her is so unnerving. I’ve met the girl that plays her out of makeup too and she’s very nice, but I still can’t shake that uncomfortable feeling.
Back around 1980 I had a friend who used to portray eight different characters at Disneyland, depending on what was needed. He was quite tall so he portrayed characters like Goofy, the Queen of Hearts, one half of Colonel Hathi, and most importantly for this tale, the Big Bad Wolf. Being a villainous character Big Bad received some flack from some guests, and David had been punched and kicked in this role. Fortunately, Big Bad was always found in the company of the Three Little Pigs and it was the unofficial duty of Practical Pig, he of the house of bricks, to protect Big Bad. You see, Practical didn’t have working arms, but merely stuffed arms that swung wide as he walked. He did, however, possess the devastating weapon of the Blue Blade. The brim of Practical’s cap was made of very hard rubberized plastic. It was at just the right height that, should someone be bothering Big Bad, Practical could come up behind the guest, lean back, then snap forward, driving the Blue Blade into the perp’s neck or upper back, dropping them instantly. I asked how often this happened and David told me only a couple times. I asked if there was ever a case brought against Disney and he said no. That people would first have to admit to harassing a park employee, then further admit they’d been beaten up by one of the Three Little Pigs in a costume without working arms. Yeah, no bully is ever going to admit that. Thank you for reading my story!
A small clarification for @14:50. She was a meet and greet for Villains Night 2022. She shared the same sapace as Yzma from Emperor's New Groove. Both were equally terrifying.
I knew you were going to include the face mask version of The Fairy Godmother. There are also face mask versions of Lady Tremaine, Anastasia, and Drizella that are all frightening. I'm glad that they're all face characters nowadays.
Divine scared the living daylights out of me when I was little, she was always near the tree house in magic kingdom and I would ball my eyes out every time I’d see her😂
I think you Need to do an honorable mention of the Phineas and Ferb live stage show characters. The fireside girls, Candace, Jeremy, Baljeet all look terrifying.
Great video! I worked at the Magic Kingdom at Waly Disney World for 20 years, and our Fairy Godmother from Cinderella was a face character. She was a lovely, plump lady, who looked exactly like the one in the film. I worked in Fantasyland and rode in the elevator with her 100s of times. However, she was overlooked most of the time because she appeared with Anastasia & Drizella, trust me... I know. They would ride the Carrousel before their sets, and do all these shenanigans. The guests would laugh, but it caused so many safety concerns, it wasn't worth it. My trainees would be so confused. I told them, "If you are unsure... DON'T LET THEM RIDE!" Attractions & Entertainment have a love/hate relationship! LOL
Haha my high school band was in the Spectromagic parade, imagine a spectroman with his face pulled back smoking a cigarette still on top of the ball backstage lol
5:14 there is a burlesque dancer “Charlie Quinn Starling” who makes clever use of feather fans and puppetry of a glove to make a convincing and clever “face character” upanova in one of her routines! She proves it could be adapted and done by Disney effectively. 🎉
They had Jafar at the Halloween Parade in the villains float and it had that weird mask. Which contrasted poorly with the other characters that were all real human faces. Wreck-It Ralph was in the parade as well for some reason. On the bright side, I got to see Max at Cosmic Rays rocking out with yhe live DJ and ran into Jack Sparrow in the exit hall of Pirates. He seemed to be in a rush, so I didn't bother him and just gave a salute.
I feel the same way about the face villains. Some of THE best interactions you can have are with villain characters like Grimhilde and Gaston. Why not extend that to Captain Hook and Queen of Hearts, ESPECIALLY now that villains land is coming?
Omg I was terrified of the face shell version of the Spectromen I literally have an exact memory of being terrified at a young age and being in my stroller crying 😂
Really good video that one there about the scary characters to meet and greet in the park. I think for me the scariest would be the Bobble-head characters in the 1970s they looked weird and terrifying, even the cast member themselves would’ve had neck problems wearing the head pieces and some suffocating issues as well.
Had no idea about Divine until you mentioned her. Yeah, freaky costumes scare me almost as much as heights. The evil queen/witch costume makes sense though if you ask me
With regards to the Fairy Godmother, it's one thing to find young American women, willing to relocate to a Disney-owned dorm in Asia and perform a princess. It's easy-ish to find a woman in the Orlando area who with a wig looks old enough to be the Fairy Godmother, and is willing to work for a low wage. But to find a woman old enough to pass, and to relocate? The only practical option is a Tokyo local in a mask.
@@weebcraft6829 Of interest, the princesses and other face characters only speak English in the Asian parks. Even though the movies are translated into for screening there, even though there is a not insignificant supply of American youth with no Chinese or Japanese ancestry that learn the language (though mostly Japanese), they'll acknowledge certain phrases, but reply in English.
There are two Disney villains that truly scared me when I was a kid. One is Chernabog, from the Night on Bald Mountain sequence in Fantasia. The entire sequence is unnerving. Always gives me goosebumps, even as an adult. He is the God of Evil, after all. But the one who absolutely terrified the ten year old me was the Headless Horseman. Even today, I can't watch it without remembering my ten year old self being mesmerized in fear, not wanting to watch, but being unable to look away. The Disney animators were geniuses.
It was like the parting of the Red Sea when Captain Hook walked through a breakfast buffet at Disneyland about 20 years ago. Children were running from from their parents just to get away from him! They were screaming and crying as well. Needless to say I wrote a letter advising please no more visits from Cpt. Hook during the $50/head buffet that I was having with my family celebrating my niece’s 5th birthday.😂
I'm constantly amazed by what other people think is scary, frightening, and/or creepy. I was never that kid who thoughts the Skekis from The Dark Crystal were scary, or the Red Bull from The Last Unicorn, for that matter. Maybe that's why none of these characters seem creepy or weird to me. I also love puppets and am not afraid of clowns - this entire video gives me the feeling you (and the viewers who agree with you) are the type of people who are. I feel sad for people who are afraid of completely harmless things. You're missing out on a lot of joy.
The Big Bad Wolf looks pretty tame to me. Have you seen some of the costumes at Anthrocon? Furries really know cute, but they know scary as well. Kire and Beauty of the Bass come to mind. 😮

The other one's fingers tho 😮 I miss the Aladdin show and Aladdin's oasis at land, u should make a video talking about it if you can 😅
Only three things at a Disney park ever scared me, Snow Whites Adventure (MK) 1984 (4-years -old), the original Universe of Energy in 1984 (4-years-old), and Disco Yetti in 2024 (44-years-old.) and the funny thing is that nothing at DL ever has, which has always been my home park. I think it might be Florida.
I think you missed one personally. Have you ever seen the jacks skeleton half face shield is basically covers the actor from the nose up and I’m sorry he’s gonna be the scariest thing I’ve seen

Jafar scared me SO MUCH as a kid, and the fact that I have his autograph in my childhood book is a complete miracle
Sounds like the collector’s desire was more powerful than your fear.
I dont know how kids back in the day werent crying in fear of the original mickey costume
What is the detailing in Mickey's face? It looks injurious (to put it nicely).
