Olivehead this one expresses how disgusted and angry eliza is, but the original to me just fits her loving character more, i think this version would fit angelica if she was one to marry hamilton
I love how they focus on Rachelle whenever Eliza's pissed off, she really brings that anger out. Come to think of it, all the ladies seem to showcase different emotions/thoughts. Shoba for example really sells that heartbroken mother feeling, both in voice and mannerisms.

Honestly, the way I interpret the title of this song is that this is the first time Eliza is confronting her anger with her husband’s behavior. She hates the way he never has time for her, she hates the way he flirts with everyone, and she hates his obsession with his reputation and his legacy but she’s *never* said anything about it. Her breaking point, was when he cheated on her. That’s when her emotions couldn’t be bottled up anymore so this song, while it’s mainly about him cheating, it’s about also about those things too, and those little things she brings up when she says “they are your legacy, we are your legacy” or “you enemy whispers so you have to scream” is her confronting him about those things too :)
Why is nobody talking about when they sing "Your enemy whispers so you have to scream." This is basically Eliza confronting Hamilton saying he was so obsessed with keeping his name cleared that he ruined so many other lives in the process.
I think it also pertains to how his political rivals rumor or "whisper" about his malicious endeavors, but since Alexander is very reckless and competitive, he "screams" it himself.
I don't think that line is in that order in the final version of this song. This (the original) version is more angry while the one in the musical emphasizes the sorrow more than the anger.
Clear as the life of Maria, her lover, but Eliza did not allow her name to be cleared so Eliza only refers to her lover as "this girl" since she did not want all the blame to fall on her and leave her name clean. Alexander.

1:50-1:56 “I know about whispers, I see how you look at my sister...” Damn. This version of Burn makes everyone realize that Eliza was not as naive as people think her to be.
I have a feeling that Eliza asked her about and angelica told her the truth or that Angelica came foward with the truth about her feelings for angelica and it most likely happened after his death cause even Eliza knew that Angelica got a different side of ham. Although if Peggy was still alive when ham died then Eliza would have had so much more to contribute to Hamiltons story and legacy
but Hamilton did say to Eliza during helpless "Angelica tried to take a bite of me" so she did know but didn't think to much about it as she trusted Angelica not do do anything out of line.

My problem was that he never thought to tell her about his mistake she had to find out from a darn publication with the whole country. Did he ever think of how much that would hurt, he was definitely selfish and did not deserve a sweet soul as Eliza
Humble Bread she is a saint after Hamilton cheated on her, she eventually forgiven him and they had a child again. After Hamilton's death, she established the first probate orphanage.

@@marianaamor6319 Yeah, but imagine you find out your sister acts like that around your husband. She WISHED for Alexander to pine after her. What Angelica and Alexander did was still 100% emotional cheating, so in my eyes, she did act on it.
ShopFaith Fashions It’s a musical called Hamilton. Written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, it’s about Alexander Hamilton and the american revolution. It’s a bit over two and a half hours if you ever wanna listen to it
@@caittailsI think they meant the line "you told the whole world how you brought this girl into our bed" it's the fact that she doesn't villanize Maria or calls her a whore
"when will you learn that they are you legacy, we are your legacy" i personally think that this line shows that Hamilton was so focused on making sure he had physical evidence of his part in the creation of America to preserve his legacy that he neglected another part of his legacy, his family. it's such a powerful line in this version of the song. the entire song is amazing in either version too.
"I see how you look at my sister." *D A M N.* I (kinda) get why they didn't include this in the Broadway show, but I wish they at least included this line. This line is Eliza telling Alex that no, he's not as slick as he thinks he is, and yes, she _did_ catch all those times he was stealing glances at her sister. It always irked me that in the musical Eliza seemed to have no idea what was going on between the two because honestly, he was being kinda obvious. In this case, she's always known, but decided not to say anything until Alex pushed her too far. It would've shown how much he took her kindness for granted, and how much he screwed up by royally pissing off even someone as sweet and forgiving as Eliza. You got what you wanted, Ham, but you lost what you had.
dude. That would have put the cherry on top in the musical. Like, the music would go all deep, as would the lights, everything pausing/moving slowly. It would all just wrap up quickly that ham really went to far. Honestly, the setting in those few seconds would go so smooth, that it’d be a part people would rewind to watch again. If the musical contained that magic and power into Eliza’s song, the audience would feel their heart drop. Especially from our light hearted kind and forgiving Eliza. Dang, thinking about it rn already giving me chills.
I kind of like that they didn’t, because it really just reinforces Eliza’s trusting nature and her relationship with her sister e.g. “You will never find anyone as trusting or as kind” etc. the fact that she trusted Hamilton so much just makes this betrayal even more devastating.
Okay, everyone loves the parts "I see how you look at my sister" and "Explain to your children". But I just love how Rachelle sang the "DON'T, take another step in my direction". That, hit me deeper than anything else in this song. The change from wandering what went wrong to the realisation that it was just Alex.
I find it extraordinarily perfect that the “WE are your legacy,” is true. not just in Eliza and their children, but the singers who are putting their most heartfelt effort into this song. Because it indeed is true. THEY ARE a result in his legacy, and it lives on.
love this. love that the way the intro this sounds, clear as always, but this version is somehow eerie for some reason? like it sounds kind of disconnected?? haunting? and kind of faded, like it's from a dream or a recollection.. so good.
I've always assumed this is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the challenge in writing the song and how hard it was to find information about how she really did react to it
Why is nobody taking about, "your enemy whispers so you have to scream." This is so true. Burr threatened Hamilton once and he had to go tell the whole world about this affair that only three people knew about. This line just sums up the whole show.
Arianna is the lost side Shoba is the hurting mother Lexi wants to make him understand Rachelle wants to make him feel the pain Julia is just wondering what went wrong

I'm in love with the line "When will you learn that they are your legacy? We are your legacy!" because it's almost as if she's saying "What you do in politics isn't why you're going to be remembered. The others in that department would love to see you forgotten. The only reason you will be remembered is your family, and that's what you're discarding most" and also realising that he will care more about them if he thinks of them as his legacy and not people he loves and it's so intense and I just
It really shows her anger and like kick starts the differences from Burn which is more sad and gentle whereas First Burn shows the side of Eliza that’s ready to slap Hamilton.
Ok so many people are commenting on “I see how you look at my sister” but like, are we all ignoring the best part?! “Explain to the children, the pain and embarrassment, you put their mother through. When will you learn, that they are your legacy, WE ARE YOUR LEGACY” Cuz I thought that was the best part
I completely agree. I think the final "Burn" we ended with is the best version, but if anything new in this version could have made it in, I would have chosen the part about his family being his legacy after she tells him "the world has no right to [her] heart. The world has no place in [their] bed. They don't get to know what [she] said."
hpfan, so it would look something like this... The world has no right to my heart. The world has no place in our bed. They don't get to know what I said. I am burning the memories, Burning the letters that might have redeemed you. And when the time comes Explain to the children The pain and embarrassment You put their mother through. When will you learn that THEY are your legacy? WE are your legacy!
'Heaven forbid someone whisper "he's part of some scheme", Your enemy whispers so you have to scream! I know about whispers, I see how you look at my sister...' Lin Manuel Miranda, HOW DARE YOU remove this verse. It. Is. PERFECT.
Tom meph I’ve always thought the musical could have benefited from an extra song or two in that gap anyways. Hamilton has an affair, gets their son killed, and then at the end of the next song Eliza forgives him. I think splitting “burn” into “first burn” and “congratulations” woulda helped with that, and maybe if they added something else before “it’s quiet uptown” as well, it could have made Eliza’s forgiveness feel more earned.
First Burn was the original draft of Burn when Lin was first writing the song from Eliza's eyes. So, it came first but ultimately got revamped into the Burn we know from the show and then the original was turned into First Burn for the Hamildrop.
This is so much better than the version that made the cut. "And when the time comes, explain to the children the pain and embarassment you put their mother through. When will you learn that they are your legacy? WE are your legacy." That shit slaps.
I love the two different sides of the ‘burns’ this one is all her anger and hatred for Alexander but ‘burn’ shows the pain he has put her through. But the line about legacies should have defo been added in to the final version
I totally agree!! Mannn this is so good!! But my theory is, they made a vague version of "how eliza reacted" that made the final cut because as the song suggested, there were no records of eliza reacting to the reynolds pamphlet/the scandal. so she might have really kept mum about everything and they wanted it to stay as accurate as possible??
I love how selfless Eliza was when she said “you have ruined our lives” not just thinking about herself but also the children, Maria, and Angelica. Hits different.
@@no.8952 no Hamilton had more than one kid one was name angelica there was also maria phillp and more. so this person is talking about thier other kids
its interesting how in “first burn” eliza attacks hamilton himself, whereas in “burn” she attacks his writing i think this change was much better for the story overall but i like first burn more
I've read that at the time of the Reynolds Pamphlet, she'd already known about/forgiven the affair. It was the repercussions from him announcing it to the public that was the issue in the moment. I like the idea that both songs are just from different points in time; when she finds out about the affair and when it's made public. I think that also explains why "Burn" is more subdued, it's not a fresh wound compared to the intensity of "First Burn."
I feel like attacking his writing is actually a deeper ‘burn’ and insult than attacking him as a family man. It fit the story line so perfectly and kept with the narrative of Eliza’s being more naive and heartbroken. This song is more exciting and I am obsessed but burn was perfect.
@@mackenzie_gill True. I would disagree though that Hamilton adores writing, he wrote so much. So attacking his letters would leave a much greater wound
@@sureindubitably3771Especially since Hamilton wrote a lot to Eliza during the affair. In letters he called her an angel, love... I love First burn but I agree with LMM it's more Angelica's song then Eliza's. And it's work as a song, not as a scene
Like he says in Hurricane "I wrote my way out" his writing is more important than his life to him almost. So it makes sense that Eliza attacks his writing.
_Heaven forbid someone whisper, _*_He’s part of some scheme_* _Your enemy whispers _*_so you have to scream_* _I know about whispers,_ *_I see how you look at my sister._*
I love this because both versions are two different parts of the same conversation. "Burn" is Eliza alone talking to herself about how Alexander betrayed her. #FirstBurn is what she might've said directly to Alexander. This is written as more in the angry moment and both of them in the room.
I know at 1:52 he's just hitting the keys, but the way he moves his hand looks like a reaction to the previous line like "Damn aight, roasting hammy today"
"I know about whispers, I see how you look at my sister." ...The biggest wham line ever. This 'First Burn' is burning me with every line! that comes out of all the five angry, hurt, brokenhearted, and betrayed Elizas. Lin, your genius never ends, truly.
Ytza Arroyo Carmona I'm pretty sure that all the women here at some point played Eliza so for them to take on that role they would have to be a soprano
_god_ I love the new take this can give on her character. the added fury of having almost seen this coming ("I see how you look at my sister"/"I have seen women around you") is just so. _damn_ . Edit: also, some of the lyrics mean more when sung by this group than they would just by one Eliza. " _we_ are your legacy" would only mean "me and the children" if sung solo, but in the group it sounds more like literally "all of us here singing", giving it that extra layer of meta that this musical loves
yeah, the new lines that really hit me are "your enemy whispers so you have to scream/i know about whispers/i see how you look at my sister" and i think you put it better than i could have, describing it as having almost seen this coming.
Thao Dinh I can't be trusted around you really got me like it shows a level of humanness in Eliza she can be violent and desctructive and I say it adds a level of humanness because here she's portrayed as slightly dangerous whereas in the original she seemed like a little girl who would forgive anyone whole heatedly for anything but here she doesn't forget she protects herself from it happening again I love this
@《 tsmnabila11 》 me and my friend were making Hamilton jokes and we came up with this, but other people have too I am not taking credit what so ever I just thought it was funny.
in the last part when they say "Explain to the children, the pain and embarrassment, you put their mother through. When will you learn, that they are your legacy, WE ARE YOUR LEGACY." i can feel like i was Eliza all the voices together bring her back as if i was in that same moment i can imagine screaming that is just magnific, indeed it is
Interesting how they play the same character but very distinct voices. Rachelle really stood out to me, both on her expressions and the crystal coolness of her voice.
I got to see Shoba live and it was the first time I really FELT burn. I had never connected to the song on the album but watching her sing it...I felt it physically.
I really wish Lin would have kept the line, "I see how you look at my sister" in the final version. Angelica and Alexander's little thing they had was so obvious that there's no way she couldn't have known, and I always wanted to know how Eliza felt about it. Also, it just expresses how much pain Alexander has been putting Eliza through even before the Reynolds Pamphlet. That little line is just so powerful in my opinion.
Yea... and from what I remember, I read that, historically, Peggy was the one who had an interest with Alex not Angelica. So, its kinda like a double-whammy. XD
+I'm_A_Bookworm FALSE. Historically, Peggy and Alexander were close friends. Platonic friends. He was with her on her death bed while he was in her town for work. Peggy asked him to stay so he did and kept Eliza updated on how she was doing as she was far out of town. He was with her when she died and in the letters that they PLATONICALLY wrote to each other when Alexander first began courting Eliza, we can see that they were only friends. Don't spout off nonsense.
No, i, glad he didnt because that would ruin the image of the trusting eliza, if he put that line it would mean that eliza had also doubted her sister and her husband. That’s not eliza.
짜증 난다michelle i love this line because Hamilton basically abandoned his family because he was so obsessed with his legacy but actually... your fam is your legacy CHECKMATE
"When will you learn That they are your legacy? We are your legacy" I wish this part was kept in the version of Burn that was released for Hamilton. Hamilton's version was a burn but this one is a ROAST

Ik I'm late but I feel like it was important too because it was never really addressed in the musical what was going on w angelica and Alexander by Eliza
@@clearly_a_racconright?? It almost seemed like they were both married to him. I felt so terrible for Eliza every time Angelica came on the stage and all she did was declaring her love for her sister's husband, and her sister's husband doing the same thing vice verca.

i personally think that this line shows that Hamilton was so focused on making sure he had physical evidence of his part in the creation of America to preserve his legacy that he neglected another part of his legacy, his family.
it's such a powerful line in this version of the song. the entire song is amazing in either version too.
Agreed 10000%
"if you thought you were mine / don't" ties in nicely with how she ends the musical as well
I honestly think that they should have included that line
It's also kinda objectively incorrect. The legacy of Alexander Hamilton wasn't his family, really.

"I see how you look at my sister."
*D A M N.* I (kinda) get why they didn't include this in the Broadway show, but I wish they at least included this line.
Hmmmm
Good point, but all my dumb musical head can think about is those last two lines you said
He threw away his shot. I can't believe how much she's gone through.

I completely agree. I think the final "Burn" we ended with is the best version, but if anything new in this version could have made it in, I would have chosen the part about his family being his legacy after she tells him "the world has no right to [her] heart. Lin Manuel Miranda, HOW DARE YOU remove this verse.
It. Is. PERFECT.
Mainly for the reason that there isn't much between burn and quiet uptown. Coming off that line quiet uptown just wouldnt have worked
And maybe because “Burn” came years earlier than “First Burn”
Burn was made before this
First Burn was the original draft of Burn when Lin was first writing the song from Eliza's eyes. So, it came first but ultimately got revamped into the Burn we know from the show and then the original was turned into First Burn for the Hamildrop.
I love that you can really hear the mix of anger and grief in their voices
This is so much better than the version that made the cut. "And when the time comes, explain to the children the pain and embarassment you put their mother through. When will you learn that they are your legacy? WE are your legacy." That shit slaps.
Hot take:
This song cuts deeper than the Laurens Interlude.

oof that's whump baby
I totally agree!! Mannn this is so good!! But my theory is, they made a vague version of "how eliza reacted" that made the final cut because as the song suggested, there were no records of eliza reacting to the reynolds pamphlet/the scandal. so she might have really kept mum about everything and they wanted it to stay as accurate as possible??

@@Milowritings Oh, thanks for explaining. My bad.
its interesting how in “first burn” eliza attacks hamilton himself, whereas in “burn” she attacks his writing
i think this change was much better for the story overall but i like first burn more
I've read that at the time of the Reynolds Pamphlet, she'd already known about/forgiven the affair.

That and explain to your children the embarrassment you caused their mother. GOOD LORD!

I got to see Shoba live and it was the first time I really FELT burn. I had never connected to the song on the album but watching her sing it...I felt it physically.
Haadiya Ahmed armyy
Omg so you like BTS and Hamilton, omg finally i've found someone XD
I love how they create an echoing effect with the line
*’I’m erasing myself from the narrative’* .
I agree, but it's kind of confusing, other than that I really like it
Rachel Ann Go's voice, her expression... the anger... betrayal... perfect. Personal bias.
This is fantastic, but I really want to hear how they would have handled the agonizing "You, YOU, YOU, YOUUUUU!"
riffhammeron I was waiting for it because they took these lines and made it so powerful, that would have been the cherry on the top
I wonder how Hamilton felt when his wife split into 5, wrote and produced a diss track, then posted it TH-cam.
Bad and terrified
he locked himself in the bedroom-
*distance screech*
He was probably like, "Now I gotta write a 40 page book about it"
@@GreetingsFineCitizen Mhm
I didn't think Burn could get any better...
*...I was wrong*
- ForeverLoxy - RIGHT
- ForeverLoxy - SAME
I agree with you fwiend!!!
- ForeverLoxy - IM THE 999 LIKE SOMEONE GET IT TO ONE THOU
Rachelle Ann Go will always hold a special place in my heart
I really wish Lin would have kept the line, "I see how you look at my sister" in the final version. Angelica and Alexander's little thing they had was so obvious that there's no way she couldn't have known, and I always wanted to know how Eliza felt about it. Also, it just expresses how much pain Alexander has been putting Eliza through even before the Reynolds Pamphlet. That little line is just so powerful in my opinion.
Brianna well Angelica literally asked her to share him...
Yea... and from what I remember, I read that, historically, Peggy was the one who had an interest with Alex not Angelica. So, its kinda like a double-whammy. XD
Brianna yesss
+I'm_A_Bookworm
FALSE.
When will you learn...
*THEY ARE YOUR LEGACY*
*WE ARE YOUR LEGACY*
WTF LIN MY HEART
WHEN WILL YOU LEARN...THAT YOUR ACCTIONS HAVE CONSEQUENCES
Human Trash Can GAHAHAHA 😂😂
Human Trash Can OML I WAS THINKING THAT TOO
Human Trash Can IM DEAD 💀 😂😂😂Currently not breathing
짜증 난다michelle i love this line because Hamilton basically abandoned his family because he was so obsessed with his legacy but actually... your fam is your legacy CHECKMATE
"When will you learn
That they are your legacy?
We are your legacy"
I wish this part was kept in the version of Burn that was released for Hamilton. Hamilton's version was a burn but this one is a ROAST
Sunlestia honestly that’s my favourite line in this song it’s so powerful
Sunlestia I like the original burn for the musical better because in her solo you really feel the pain and at that moment all you should feel is the raw pain
If they kept that in the original burn, who lives who dies would be less climactic and pointless. Just my thoughts.
Sunlestia omfg yes.
Sunlestia PUN INTENDED
“Your enemy’s whisper, so you have to scream”
One of the best lyrics in this song!
THIS, my friends, is why the song was titled "Burn"
But it should be called Don't.
Ooooo just clicked your channel , your art is super nice + 1 sub :'P
