Thank you! I agree; I mean the wireless battery does have to go somewhere, but the keyboard just simply isn't as ergonomically friendly as some others out there on the market. Otherwise, I think it's a dope board!
I've never used a mechanical keyboard before. My current 7 year-old Razer Deathstalker is getting pretty hard to press and playing games on a long session tired my fingers out and it's even harder to type with this keyboard with WFH I need to type a lot. So I ordered that the K8 since I need a mutil-role keyboard and mechanical to try out. Let's hope I like it.
That really depends on what you like. What sort of switches did you get to begin with? Yellows are linear which some people aren't a huge fan of, so it really depends. I don't personally have experience with them, but I've heard good things!
Liked and Subscribed!! Great video, I can't thank you enough for making this one, especially the comparison with GMMK. I am torn between choosing one of them and it all boils down to height of the switches (wrist pain). I saw from your video that the GMMK is way thinner, but because of its floating keycap design, the height difference between the two is drastically reduced. I think I will go with the K8 because I like its aesthetics, let me know if I should lookout for anything. Keep up the great work
Hey thanks for the sub! I appreciate it :) The K8 is a great keyboard as well, especially if you are prioritizing wireless over anything. Also if you're a Mac user it's pretty nice to have the native support. I am neither of those things so personally this isn't my daily driver, but I definitely think it's a great board for the price! The keyboard height can also be easily mitigated if you get a wrist rest as well.
@@PatrickRennie Fair enough, but say if I were to use the K8 strictly for PC gaming and some scripting work occasionally, would you still recommend it? Or do you think I should look elsewhere?
Hey! sorry I just saw that you had a follow-up. Personally my daily driver is neither of those boards; I'm currently using the Idobao ID80 for daily use, mostly because of the form factor as well as the all-aluminum body. It's certainly a pricier option compared to the K8 or the GMMK because you need to provide your own keycaps and switches. That all being said, if I were to choose between the K8 or the GMMK for my own needs (Gaming, Typing, Video Editing, etc), I would opt for the GMMK. This is because I prefer the lower sides, and I don't really care too much about wireless compatibility. Hope that helps!
@@PatrickRennie yeah i like the browns. i have a few blue switch keyboards and i liked the clicky sound at first but after a few days it got annoying. especially late at night when everyone was trying to sleep.
Hey, great video as always I was just wondering how long did it take for your West M cable to arrive? I ordered mine 50 days ago and haven't gotten it even the tracking number still says it is in china. I emailed support 3 weeks ago and they have no idea when my package will arrive. I've just sent them a second email asking for an update on the situation but at this point, it feels like I'm getting scammed since after my initial email pointed out how my cable was still in china after 20 something days they changed their shipping time frame to say that their shipping times are not 100% accurate.
Hey there, I ordered my cable from WestM and got shipping information/details on July 17th. I received the cable in the mail on August 5th, so a little under three weeks total to receive? It sounds like something is up with your order, because 50+ days is unacceptable. I personally didn't have issues with them, but I've also only ordered the one thing a few months ago.
@@PatrickRennie Thanks for answering my question I'm still waiting for them to reply to the email I just sent. I would not mind the wait if they would have told me that their dates might be inaccurate from the start but me having to send them an email 3 weeks into my order only for them to reply that they have no clue when or if it will get to me is what annoys me.
in the switch type did u pick *Gateron* or *Gateron (Hot-swappable)* ? Please tell me... cuz i dunno if the Gateron (Hot-swappable) will be mechanical or optical... i need mechanical.
If you pick the Gateron (Hot-Swappable), you should get a hot-swappable mechanical board. Looking on their website the optical option is listed as Optical (Hot-Swappable). Hope that helps!
I think the Keychron is a good one to look at then! The fact that it has built-in MacOS support is a nice value-add. I'm not a Mac user so it didn't affect me too much, but I can see why heavy Mac users like MKBHD would be interested in it.
I'm not so sure to be honest - hot swaps pads are additional parts that need to be purchased, and they're not soldered in the same way is my understanding. I also think Keychron hot-swap boards are generally a bit more expensive than their soldered counterparts. IMO worth going hotswap though especially if you enjoy fiddling around with your boards!
I don't have experience with the keyboard you're using, but based on the photos I saw on Google the K8 is going to be quite a bit taller. I think that it's better to have a wrist rest for this board because it is tall relative to other boards I've reviewed, but overall it's not a dealbreaker for me because of the other added benefits/features it has. Hope that helps!
@@PatrickRennie Thanks for the reply, I'm probably going to get the K8, if it's too tall I can maybe use the Steelseries Apex 7 Wrist rest or buy a new one.
@@PatrickRennie Hey Patrick! Thanks for the feedback. I was planning to get a K8 as well just not sure what is that button for haha. Great channel btw. 👍
Hey! It comes with Gateron switches. You have the option to buy the board either as a hot-swappable or normal version as well! Hot swap can support all Cherry MX-style switches (gateron, kailh, zeal, etc. etc.)
(ik I'm late, but I'll comment what I have to say anyway) This is a good review, but I do have to point out an error at 1:35 about the screws in the aluminum frame version that gets you to the internals of the board. This is wrong, the case is a tray mount design, in other words the plastic case was mounting posts for screws to go in that are on the plate, so you can get into the internals no matter what version you have because the screws keeping the internals in the case is on the plate. The screws on the aluminum frames are just so you can take the frames off, because it's hard to take the keyboard apart with the aluminum frames on :)
I'm confused, this is the plastic version, not the aluminum version. My point in the review was to state that there are no obvious screws visible on the case at all, so I think my point still stands.
So I got the gmmk and just bought the keychron. After using the gmmk for more than a year, I don't recommend it. Unless you like the clacky sound of a metal board and a keyboard that sounds hollow. Also I had issues with the cable type C I recieved. Actually the problem was from the connector on the keyboard and not directly the cable, so it was impossible for me to fix.
I tend to agree with your observations about the GMMK - especially in 2021. I hope that they do a revision in the future because I still think that there is a huge potential for an entry-level board like the GMMK. If I were to pick between the Keychron and the GMMK right now though I'd have to say the Keychron has better value.
That really boils down to personal preference. That being said, if you're working in a shared space/office environment, I would stay away from anything clicky or else your coworkers will kill you lol. I'd suggest looking at either a linear or a tactile switch depending on if you prefer a slight bump when you type or a more 'smooth' experience. Personally I really like Cherry MX Blacks for linears and Zealios V2 for tactile (Zealios are what's currently in my board). Hope that helps!
Hmm. The K8 is pretty good for productivity due to its extra function keys (as compared to a 65%) and it's ability to swap between Mac OS and Windows with a switch. That being said I would invest in a decent wrist rest if the K8 were to be my daily driver. If you're looking for something budget, the Drevo Gramr is a great choice for under $80USD. For something a bit more premium you could look at the Idobao ID80, although you will need to purchase your own switches/keycaps as well. If you're looking for a TKL form factor with less of an angle, the GMMK TKL would also be a great option.
It's a good point. Although, I think it would just be easier to up the QC rather than ship one-off switches along with the case. Fortunately the hot-swappability does make it very easy to fix.
@@justanotherpxrson that micro usb kills me on the gmmk, and the 3 pin hotswap, but they got the stabs you screw in and a rlly nice aluminum plate, there’s really no right or wrong between those 2, it depends on your needs
@GHOST I think the new GMMK versions are coming out with USB-C support! 3-pin hotswap is a bit more of a criticism, but seeing as GMMK itself only sells 3-pins, I kind of get it from a business model perspective. Not sure which GMMK you are referring to that has screw ins however, the TKL version at least is plate mount.
@@PatrickRennie oh yeah my bad it was a screw in plate not stabs, well at least on the compact so I assumed the tkl also has screw in plate, and I messaged gmmk asking them about the usb c and they basically told be it’s random wether you get a usb c or a micro, but I think that by 2021 they might all be usb c cuz they said something like that.
Here you go: westm.ca/collections/cables It's a decent cable, but keep in mind that they just designed the cables; they're actually made in China so shipping times a bit longer than a local manufacturer. Good price though!
There is a dedicated screenshot button on the top-right hand corner of the board (where the LED controls are). I usually just go Win+Shift+S now for the snipping tool.
I used to have a Corsair K70 with Cherry MX Red and switched to a Corsair K63 Wireless TKL with Cherry MX Red. I love the heavier keys and thicker sound of that "upgrade" (and overall build quality on the Corsair Keyboards). But, being somewhat of a computer enthusiast and not really caring for "gamer rgb" I am kind of looking into experimenting with other brands and switches. Discovering mechanical Keyboards over a decade ago is probably the best PC discovery I made. How do you think this keyboard would feel in relation to the experiences I've mentioned?
I think it's super doable with a wrist rest! Fortunately it looks like Keychron sell those as well, although for one reason or another they don't ship those to Canada -_-
GMMK isnt wireless. If you don’t need wireless, why not KeyChron’s C1? Its a wired TKL, hotswappable, and not as tall! I’m debating on it myself right now.
I ordered a K2 v2 because I wanted a smaller keyboard. I didn’t realized the right shift key is also smaller so I had a hard time using it. I kept hitting the UP arrow key. I really fancy about the K8. I am thinking if I should get it?
Hah, I'm left-handed so I always use the left-shift anyways! My day-to-day keyboard has that short shift but I haven't ever noticed it to be honest. The K8 is also a great option if you're looking for something a bit more traditional for sure :)
If I were to purchase either the Keychron optical browns or Gateron mechanical browns, which would you recommend, the optical or non-optical? Would you say the optical is better due to speed/durability? Are there any other differences? Thanks!
Hey George! I unfortunately don't have experience with optical switches. Maybe it's my bias but I've always thought mechanical switches were a bit better from a customization perspective, because there are a lot more manufacturers making mech switches as opposed to opticals. In terms of durability however I don't think you'll have any issues with either style as I believe most mech switches are rated at 5 million presses or something crazy high. Now that you bring it up though, I am curious to try one! Maybe I can get my hands on one in the future and do some comparisons.
I didn't mod the stabs on the Keychron at all. I'd say that they're both comparable and moddable if you wanted to put some customization into it. As far as which one I think is better, I think I personally prefer the GMMK because I like the build quality and ergonomics better. That being said, if I was a Mac and PC user and was looking for something wireless, I'd go for the Keychron. I hope that helps!
lol 404 subscribers..no longer 404. which would you choose between GMMK TKL(now with usb-c and improve stabs in white version and rest of the line by the end of the year) or K8 (hotswapable, aluminum frame and RGB since that puts them in the same price)? As which one feels nicer to type in it, even as both as barebones(since I planned to use glorius pandas), the only area where I see the k8 winning is with the 5-pin switch support and bluetooth. edit: sorry for the long comment
Hey, thanks so much for the support! For me personally, I like the ergonomics of the GMMK better. I do think that the 3-pin support is a bit tough, but you can workaround this by clipping your switches/buying only 3-pins for the board itself. It is a little more expensive as you've pointed out, but personally I prefer the feel and function of the GMMK more. Also, Bluetooth connectivity isn't a huge selling factor for me as I prefer to plug my keyboards in, so if that's something that you value/prioritize, the K8 is the better pick. I hope that helps!
I think at the moment I would opt for the K8 because of it's 5pin compatibility and USB-C. I have heard that GMMK is updating this in the future but at the moment I prefer to just have 1 type of USB cable on my desk. Hope that helps!
Yeah it can be a bit of a reach, especially if your PC is on the right-hand side (like mine is). I do like the fact that the USB-C port provided is a 90 degree cable though.
Hey Andrew! Yup it works well for gaming, however I would only recommend you game with it plugged in via USB-C, too much latency on Bluetooth for fast twitch games like shooters or MOBAs

It's a good point. Although, I think it would just be easier to up the QC rather than ship one-off switches along with the case. Fortunately the hot-swappability does make it very easy to fix.
Such a great keyboard
where you can buy your switch puller?
Amazon - www.amazon.ca/dp/B0799G7XFJ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_yHdMFbKA8CRYT
I have a few boards, but I might pick one of these up to give tkl boards a fair chance
Yeah it's not a bad option! I'd also suggest looking at the GMMK TKL as well depending on if you're looking for a wireless option or not.
@@PatrickRennie yea, I looked into that one a lot too. If I get a gmmk, I would wait for the barebones version of white one to come out.
@@PatrickRennie oh yeah my bad it was a screw in plate not stabs, well at least on the compact so I assumed the tkl also has screw in plate, and I messaged gmmk asking them about the usb c and they basically told be it’s random wether you get a usb c or a micro, but I think that by 2021 they might all be usb c cuz they said something like that.
what's the name of cable you are using at 2:53?
Here you go: westm.ca/collections/cables
It's a decent cable, but keep in mind that they just designed the cables; they're actually made in China so shipping times a bit longer than a local manufacturer. Good price though!
@@PatrickRennie Thank you!
👍👍
@@PatrickRennie Ah crap. They are all sold out.
I think they restock pretty regularly! I'd check periodically :)
how do you screenshot on the keyboard?
How do you think this keyboard would feel in relation to the experiences I've mentioned?
i have the aluminium version with brown switches
is it a firmware to this?
Damn, if this keyboard wasn't so tall I would be so down for this over the GMMK
I think it's super doable with a wrist rest! Fortunately it looks like Keychron sell those as well, although for one reason or another they don't ship those to Canada -_-
@@PatrickRennie I'd much rather shop around on amazon for a wrist rest though than from keychron
Maybe I can get my hands on one in the future and do some comparisons.
what about the keychron c1
Hey! I unfortunately don't have any experience with the C1 so I can't really offer my insight. Maybe a review for the future!
Is this good for gaming?
Yep! Definitely would game wired though, there is some latency when gaming in wireless mode.
what is your usb?
Sorry not sure what you're asking. Are you asking about the cable?
How long is it
How long is the whole keyboard? Their website says 355mm wide, which seems to be pretty standard for most TKLs.
so, is it better than the GMMK? mainly which one has the better stabs?
I didn't mod the stabs on the Keychron at all. I'd say that they're both comparable and moddable if you wanted to put some customization into it. As far as which one I think is better, I think I personally prefer the GMMK because I like the build quality and ergonomics better. That being said, if I was a Mac and PC user and was looking for something wireless, I'd go for the Keychron. I hope that helps!
@@PatrickRennie thanks!
Cool
Why does this dude not have more subs? It's a travesty I tells ya
Appreciate the support my guy!
lol 404 subscribers..no longer 404. which would you choose between GMMK TKL(now with usb-c and improve stabs in white version and rest of the line by the end of the year) or K8 (hotswapable, aluminum frame and RGB since that puts them in the same price)?
@@PatrickRennie thank you "pana", will recommend you to my mexican keyboard community, is not much (6300 members) but maybe it helps.
I'm grateful for any kind of support! Comments like yours are what motivate me to make more vids. Cheers 🤗
But is there a GMMK TKL wireless/bluetooth option at this price point?
Not from GMMK to my knowledge. If you are prioritizing Bluetooth/wireless connectivity, then I would suggest the Keychron line instead for sure.
K8 VS GMMK TKL which is best bro? Can you render it down for me?
I think at the moment I would opt for the K8 because of it's 5pin compatibility and USB-C. I have heard that GMMK is updating this in the future but at the moment I prefer to just have 1 type of USB cable on my desk. Hope that helps!
A shame the port is on the side
Yeah it can be a bit of a reach, especially if your PC is on the right-hand side (like mine is). I do like the fact that the USB-C port provided is a 90 degree cable though.
why does everyone hate on blue switches :/
Hahaha, they're just sooo loud. My office is in a shared space, and my partner would probably kill me if I continued to use clickies :P
why get blues =(
wanted to try something different than what I already had on hand lol. Kind of regretti
@@PatrickRennie haha nice, I regret getting browns on my old rk61 :(

is this board good for gaming?
Hey Andrew! Yup it works well for gaming, however I would only recommend you game with it plugged in via USB-C, too much latency on Bluetooth for fast twitch games like shooters or MOBAs
switchs is good or no?
I didn't like the Gateron Blues personally - if you can buy this barebones I'd recommend that with switches of your own preference.
@@PatrickRennie same i hate blue switch I recommend red switch or linar switch always
