@@surlechapeau It was old school even back when L.R. covered it. Riddle was known for very lush orchestrations in the big band style but with more strings. He was a music arranger extraordinaire. I loves me Soundgarden more than anything but there’s so much great, older music out there. American Standards, jazz, blues, etc.
EAR CANDY! (Rondstadt sang everything except hard rock. Stunning voice.)

Especially the live version from the Hollywood concert where she transitions seamlessly into a Spanish verse. It is enough to raise the hairs on the back of your neck. This song is great, but Linda's voice is restrained here.

    • @grievouserror

Part of the difference could be that Linda was the only member of the Stone Poneys who actually performed on that recording. Capitol signed them but really just wanted Linda, although they judged her not quite ready for a solo career at that time. The producer, Nick Venet, changed it from their vision of an acoustic ballad and recruited guitarist Bernie Leadon (pre-Eagles), guitarist Al Viola (Frank Sinatra, Bobby Troup, Stan Kenton, et. al.), drummer Jim Gordon (Frank Zappa, Derek & the Dominos, Traffic, Bread, et. al.) and bassist/arranger Jimmy Bond (Frank Zappa, Henry Mancini, Nina Simone, Lou Rawls, Tony Bennett, et. al.). Phenomenal musicians and the difference shows.

Just came across you Beth & I’m so impressed with your down do earth reacting style that I’ve immediately subscribed to your Chanel. I’ve listened to Rhonda over the years & she does have a beautiful voice.
However, I’d like to draw your attention to a young Soprano singer by the name of Amira Willighagen , who won Holland’s Got Talent at the age of nine, without having a single singing lesson. Shortly after, she started with a voice coach & has since performed in some 13 countries & sung in at least 5 languages. Her concert performances have been to a packed auditorium supported by a full orchestra and backup singers.
Unfortunately, not many reactors have heard of Amira, which I find amazing as she has literally” millions “of fans world wide & the reactors who did react , continued on with further reactions & absolutely love her.
I hope you keep reading this post as it’s rather long, and I need to explain further.
Amira is a natural Soprano. Too many wannabe Sopranos struggle & strain when in their higher register which is obviously detrimental to both their voice & their career. Not so with Amira. When in her top register, she does so with ease, never straining & does so effortlessly & when changing registers, it’s smooth & aligned.
So, below are a few performances by Amira for your consideration.
... O Mio Babbino Caro at the age of 10. The world renown musician/ conductor Andre Rieu invited Amira to sing at Maastricht to an audience of 15,000 & they gave her a standing ovation. The total 15,000 rose as one.
... Ave Maria by Gomez at the Canisius Church at the age of 11. It shows exactly how natural her higher register is & she gives a most emotional performance.
... Nella Fantasia at the age of 12. ( the concert performance )
... Gabriella’s Song at the age of 14 ( again the concert performance)
... Sound of Music medley at the age of 15. Amira sings about an octave above the original by Julie Andrews & nails it.
You could say I’m “pumping her tyres up”, & yes, I am. This young Soprano is not only a superb singer, she is a modern day prodigy.
Sincerely hope to hear from you, & keep up the excellent, knowledgeable work.

Beth, Linda Ronstadt is my favorite singer of all time (male or female). She started our with the more folk or country sound and then over the next 30 years or so moved around from genre to genre being in my opinion most excellent at all of them. She did Pop/Rock, Musical Theater, Big Band style American Standards, Mexican Traditional, beautiful love ballads and of course Country and Folk music. She did a collaboration with Dolly Parton and Emmylou Harris called Trio where they did more traditional country style music but she also did music for an animated feature film with Peabo Bryson and then also did duets with others such as Aaron Neville. She was a guest artist on albums from a list of other artist that would be about as long as your arm. She had this amazing strong belt but could also sing in a whisper. Her range was also much larger than what most people thought. She had to stop singing somewhere around 2011 and announced her retirement because of complications from Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, first diagnosed as Parkinson's Disease. Her worldwide album sales are over 100 million. This video that you reacted to is before she went solo in her career and when she was still virtually a baby in the industry. It's good...but it got a whole lot better very quickly. Please give a listen to some of her other music. I really love the three albums she did of American Standards with The Nelson Riddle Orchestra, but then I love everything she ever did and have about 20 vinyl discs to prove it. Yes, I'm old and I been listening to her from the beginning.

While this is now an old posting (3 years ag), I think it worth while to point out a couple of things. The recording would seem to have been made during a two week long gig at the "Bitter End" club in NYC from March 29th through April 8th 1968. If so, that would make Linda Ronstadt 21 years old at the time. She had been singing professionally for about 5 years, starting in her home town, Tucson, AZ. At no point in this time span is it mentioned that she ever attended a vocal music school. While Ms. Ronstadt is known to have taken her performances seriously and was well prepared in whatever genera she chose next, in a career that covered more different kinds of music than any other performer of her (or any other) era ever attempted. So when Beth points out sophisticated vocal technique, you have to say that Linda Ronstadt's natural tendencies and talent were phenomenal.

Hi Beth: The video clip that you used of Linda singing Different Drum is not an indication of how great her voice was. She said in later life that although her manager Peter Asher made her for fortune in country rock in the 1970s that she was a balladeer and never wanted to have to hear another wailing electric guitar solo. I think in that video as in a lot of her country rock days she is struggling to sing over an electrified band. There is a live version of her that’s quite nice singing a beautiful ballad called Faithless Love. Or since you are British I think she did a lovely recorded version of Sinead O’Connor‘s This Is To Mother Me. In Blue Bayou, she goes effortlessly from low to high. There is also a live version that is great of Linda and Bonnie Raitt, also an excellent singer with a more bluesy voice, doing a duet of a lovely song called I’m Blowing Away.

You’re probably not going to believe me but if you check into it, you’ll find I’m telling the truth. Besides country music Linda Ronstadt sang regular pop, straight ahead rock music, jazz pop standards, mariachi, Tex-Mex, operetta and she had great commercial success in all of them. A first impression might cause someone to pigeonhole one of the most versatile singers of the past maybe hundred years. She’s quite a bit more than this first impression you may have of her. If anyone else sees this comment maybe you’ll back me up. But she does tend to belt it out quite a bit, many times not always to my taste, but there’s no way I’d ever deny how great a singer she is.
Funny comment you made about the UK and country music considering that only have The Rolling Stones made some great country music, they’re one of the greatest country music bands ever and I’m neither kidding or exaggerating about that either.

At base her singing stylings are the Mexican singing traditions Linda learned as a child at her Mexican American family home in Arizona. Her creativity was to breath it in to rock and country and finally into mariachi. The result was amazing singing that we all have enjoyed thru-out the years and today.

Linda is simply one of the greatest singers of her generation. She can milk the ballads with beautiful tone. She can dirty up on the rockers. One of the true greats.

Different drum was actually previously released by a country band in bluegrass style. It went nowhere but Linda believed it was a great song that she could do better (it is a great song, and she turned her version into a classic). Her original concept was to keep it in country style, but it was arranged in more of a pop flavor. She had doubts about it but in the end she went with it and it ended up giving her her break out... the rest is history.

I think there's something wrong with the audio in that video, and it doesn't do Linda's voice justice. There are better examples out there on youtube, and you should check them out.
Linda Ronstadt was definitely one of the most brilliant and beautiful voices of the 70's and perhaps into the 80's.
You must listen to more of her.

She has the most beautiful, flexible voices ever! This is very early and doesn't show it off as well as newer recordings. She has done Mexican faolk, Pirates of Penzance, Jazz standards, New Wave, Country, Pop, Classic Pop and R & B. One of the biggest singers in the U.S. ever. It's so sad that cannot sing now due to Parkinson's. Listen to " Somebody to Lay Down Beside Me". Chilling.

Later in her life she recorded some Spanish language music on a recording call songs for my Father though the title maybe in Spanish. Sadly she was diagnosed with Parkinson’s and has been unable to sing for the last 12 or so years. You really must explore vast catelog.

I'd like to see you do the studio version of that song. I think it's the greatest Rock 'N Roll performance of all time with Randy Meisner's live 1977 performance of Take It to The Limit a close second (much better than the studio recording). To get an idea of how she owned a song once she did it, listen to Barbara Sreisand's version of Stoney End (original) and Linda Ronstadt's (cover) version of it. My guess is that Streisand never sang it again once she heard Ronstadt's version.

The greatest female singer of all time. She sold 70 million albums in one year and her tours were a sell out. Also delicious eye candy. Please do blue Bayou. I have analysed this and she hits a high Eb . Roy Orbison hits an E. But her sweet expression makes it so good. Terry from Oz.
