This was Linda's first hit record with the Stone Poneys. Mike Nesmith, one of the Monkees, wrote this, a local LA Band covered it, it became a local hit, she heard it on the radio, and recorded it, and boom! big hit!

Linda Ronstadt is one of the best female singers & can sing any genre from ballads to country to rock. "Different Drum" was written by singer-songwriter Michael Nesmith (from The Monkees) in 1964. This was Linda's first big hit in 1967 when she was only 21. She has had so many hits in her solo career such as "Blue Bayou", "You're No Good", "Long Long Time", "Poor Poor Pitiful Me", "Desperado" etc.

Actually, her voice is so good, that even with Parkinson's, she can still sing pretty well. If you want to hear how well, see the documentary "Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice". The problem is her voice was SO good, that she doesn't like the sound of it anymore, so she hardly ever sings anymore. How they got her to sing at the end of the documentary, I don't know.

Funny trivia. Mike Nesmith the writer of the song tried doing this while he was with The Monkees, and the producers told him "it wasn't really a Monkees song". So he turned it over to Linda who had her first chart success. (edit) And profs to y'all for doing this amazing song, AND a great movie tonight. Totally made my night.

And Nesmith once again proved that the producers were egotistical control freak idiots, esp. Don Kirchner. All they had to do was change the style from Nesmith's "swing beat" version to a straight rock beat medium ballad tempo. Nesmith or Micky Dolenz could have sang it with the others doing backup vocals - it would have at least been a good album cut and they would have found use for it on the TV show, like another script when Davy Jones falls in love with yet another girl, who's not interested [if so, she must have been sick lol] But nooooo...

It was all in Spanish and absolutely beautiful, but then I read that she didn't speak Spanish . It was an amazing undertaking because she not only had to get the pronunciations correct but the inflections at the right times according to the words being sung and the feeling being put forth. My sister-in- law who is Mexican ran out and bought it for her Mom. She said you would never have guessed that she didn't speak the language!

As others have already said, written by Mike Nesmith of the Monkees.
He sang a short version of it in one episode of the TV show.
    Mike's mother invented Liquid Paper.
The Stone Poneys were originally going to do a slower ballad version, but the producer decided to change the tempo and add more instruments, strings, harpsichord etc.

This was a song I heard growing up, when my parents would play it, and it wormed its way into my mind. Back in the pre-internet days, if you didn't have the cassette or CD, you had to depend on radio to hear songs, and this one went fallow form many years for me. I was at a party at my fraternity late, late night, shooting pool and hanging out, and this song came on the radio. I think it had been 10 years easy since I had heard it, but it brought a HUGE wave of nostalgia, and I made everyone in the room shut up for 3 minutes so I could hear it once again! I may have been an asshole, but it was worth it at the time! I LOVE this song, and was thrilled to hear your reaction.
PS - on the "great women vocalist" argument; one name I've never heard you talk about, and one of my absolute favorites, is Tanya Donnelly. She was the lead singer to Belly, and alternative band that had a couple of small hits in the 90's - "Feed the Tree" and "Gepetto". Those are going to be the only songs that a broader audience might know, but her deeper catalogue, both with Belly and solo, are absolutely amazing! And her voice is crystalline pure beauty! If you're interested, I can recommend a whole slew of fantastic songs!
