She earned 12 Grammy Awards during her career. She encompassed a wide range of musical genres, including rock, jazz, country, Spanish classics and won a Tony Award for her singing in the operetta "Pirates of Penzance" in 1980. Arguably one of the most gifted and talented female singers of all time!

I'm so glad that Linda is still being appreciated for the wonderful artist that she was. Her range of vocal styles throughout her career was so impressive. As a teen in the 1970s I followed her career and eagerly anticipated the release of each next album. Her Stone Pony years, her Nelson Riddle years, her Spanish roots album and her collaborations with Dolly Parton and Emmylou Harris. She truly is an artist to study and soak in for years to come. And that is completely ignoring the fact that she is a stunningly beautiful woman with a commanding stage presence. Do yourself a favor and search out anything you can find on Linda Ronstadt.

@@renetaylor9109 100% agree. I grew up in Tucson in the 50s-60s. I knew her brothers through one of the local bands they were in. She had already left for LA before that and I didn't get to see her perform until she came back one Christmas in the late 60s and she sang at our favorite folk rock club The Minus One. There were SO many great female vocalists from that era and beyond, but I still think Linda, for her range, talent and willingness to do new and sometimes novel things, was the best of all time. That is not to in any way denigrate others like Streisand, Carole King, Roberta Flack, etc., but Linda still, at least for me, stands out as the all-time greatest.

For the concurrent tour, she hired Don Henley and Glenn Frey in her band; those two, along with Bernie Leadon (The Flying Burrito Brothers) and Randy Meisner (Poco), would form the first Eagles lineup. The fully-formed Eagles only toured with Ronstadt once prior to recording their debut album, on July 15, 1971 at Disneyland Park; after establishing themselves as a fully-fledged outfit with their first three albums, they guested behind her again in 1974 during her Don't Cry Now tour, and Henley and Frey (along with future Eagles bassist Timothy B. It wasn’t cool as a kid to like her music, but I was drawn to it to such an extent that peer pressure just didn’t even come into the equation. Even today, and knowing how incredible she is as an artist., I’m still surprised every time I hear her sing. I know how good she is, and yet every time I hear her I can’t believe what I’m hearing, even though I should know. I don’t know whether that makes any sense. I think it’s that my brain can’t process that someone can be that good, so the second she stops singing. I forget how good it was, and then it surprises me again. And it’s everything she touches. Whether it’s rock, pop, country, operetta, it’s all unbelievable. I will love her my entire life. I can say that with absolute certainty.

Whitney Houston's voice was indescribable in her higher ranges, just so pure and almost angelic. Linda's was phenomenal in any range and any variety of music and easily my most favorite. She even covered Buddy Holly songs that sounded better than his did. Honorable mention to Aretha as I was astounded when I heard her sing opera (Nessun Dorma) filling in for Pavarotti.

Linda is in a league of her own. Her heartbreaking rendition of 'Long long time' makes it the greatest torch song ever. And those 3 albums of standards she made with Nelson Riddle (for which he brought out and used the original sheet music with key notations he had made for Frank Sinatra) should be in every music lover's collection. Linda Ronstadt - phenomenal woman.

Bethany: I love your choice of clips to showcase Ronstadt's amazing talent. I WAS around during her early days, but I didn't pay special attention to her until she started singing standards like Skylark. (I grew up on jazz, so the "Great American Songbook" was my musical home.) Then I started appreciating how special she was.

Linda premiered that role in the original Broadway production of The Pirates of Penzance in 1982. Of course you know she performed it in the movie the following year 1983. I had the 3 album set of standards that were produced by Linda’s collaboration with the legendary Nelson Riddle which explains why the orchestra and arrangements sounded so authentically ‘30’s & ‘40’s. The Spanish language albums were inspired by her father and her desire to honor the Latinx heritage of his family.

Linda's singing, imho, didn't only come from her talent, though great. It also came from her heart and soul, which imho is so easy to hear, when and if you actually listen to her. She was a wonderful singer, with heart and soul, but NOT the ONLY one. Listening to music, especially a good vocalist, with only the ears, and not with the heart and/or soul, is unthinkable and, even useless, to me. This video-poster listened, imho, with her heart and soul, as well as her ears. A nice video. Thank you for your work, as well as for posting this. I found it quite enjoyable.

Listening to Linda's voice and technique always made me hold my breath and forget to breathe, she was * that * good. Her voice was so warm and full, it reminded me of the feeling I got sitting next to a wood fire on a cold and snowy day. Anyway, thank you for doing this on Linda Ronstadt. @@53mandevilla i tried my best to get her back but she got in with a fast/rough drug crowd and we went separate ways. When I got out of The Corps and moved back home she had also moved back and asked me once at a friend's house to go for a drive so we could talk. I declined and the next day she asked me to drive her oput to i-95 as she was going to hitchhike back to South Carolina where she was living when she wrote the Dear John letter. I again declined. I saw her for the last time about 10 years later at a bar working as a bar tender in our old town where I had driven a high end sports car back to just drive around on the old roads and reminisce. She was still very pretty and we went back to her place and visited for a while. She told me she had hepatitis from her drug use days but it was manageable. We kissed once and it definitely brought back my old feelings for her, but I was a young Engineer at that time making vey good money and I had lots of skirts I had chased so the time had just passed between us. I still think about her fondly but never saw her again. I hear she married a while back and I will be married 28 years in April and have two grown kids now.

I enjoyed your video and I feel that Linda Ronstadt is the greatest singer of our time. I've admired her for her talent and her willingness to take on new styles/genres of singing. Very few singers are willing to do this and Linda did it so well because as you say in your video, she put in the time and effort to learn and master these vocal styles. She shows that she is a great artist because she can sing something that I've heard many times before, but when she does it I stop and listen and enjoy every second of it. She has the talent to make every performance special. I remember the first time I heard her perform, it was on a TV broadcast, she was singing "Heat Wave" with the Eagles. I was only in high school but it impressed me how strong and clearly she sang. Years later I was watching a collection of performers on the Muppet Show with my kids and they had her performance of "It's in his kiss" (also called the "Shoop Shoop" song). She was so much better than the others on that video collection and it made me appreciate how great a talent she is. Ever since then I've listened to so many of her performances and all of them have been great. I could go on forever about her.

Saw her live in the 1970s. It was an outdoor concert, and a bug flew up her nose. She waved her band to a stop, held up one finger, walked off stage, and the band played a jam until she came back a minute or two later. "Sorry, folks, I got a bug up my nose and I had to get it out." She restarted the song and carried on as if nothing had happened. She was just so down to earth in every way. I wish I had seen her with the Stone Ponys at the Troubadour in L.A. back in the day... SO MANY great musicians from the Laurel Canyon/L.A. scene got their starts there. I was a country radio announcer in 1977-'79. We played a LOT of Linda's crossover songs. She was a true chameleon of talent. I preferred her rock/pop hits, but was amazed at her operatic pursuits. She was the consummate pro and is still an amazing lady.

I was 18 years old and doing a recording session at Radio City Music Hall. Me and 20 or so guys are waiting for an elevator & when it opens, there is Linda Ronstadt. She was dressed in costume for the Pirates of Penzance which was being performed at the time. We all paused for just a moment, unable to walk on. She moves to the back of the elevator to let us on & I find myself right beside her, both of our backs against the wall. Not wanting to fanboy too much or come off creepy, I barely turn my head to her, nod and greet her by saying "Miss Ronstadt". She turns to me, gently nods & smiles demurely. I'll never forget that.

Where to start. First of all, what a good job you did putting this together. You picked the perfect songs. I think the doc you were referring to was "The Sound of My Voice". That doc was perfection. Anyone could have had her early career and rode it all the way home. But not her. The Nelson Riddle era was unbelievable, and the opera segment of her career caught us all off guard, but, when she did the "Mexican stuff", OMG! It was no longer a fair fight lol! And you were right to point out the little, almost a yodel, thing she did at the end was just magic how she would almost get there with the yodel thing, but stopped just short thus making it her own. Wonderfully whimsical!! First of all her instrument was just sheer perfection, but a lot of people sing well, however, they just don't have the instinct of how to properly utilize their gift. She just understood the nature of each song she sang and did not over do it. So many gifted young people in particular think they have to sing fifteen notes per syllable lol! But some never learn that just because you can doesn't always mean that you should. They're singing to show off, not singing for the song so to speak. She just intuitively knew how much was enough yet she always took us to the edge of that limit. Silk! By the way, you have a beautiful smile!!

It may be the best concert I ever attended! I know she was a huge star, but I still think she remains one of the most underrated singers of all time. Country Rock, Rock, Pop, Jazz, Opera, she was incredible. It is sad that she can no longer sing due to Parkinson Disease. Thank you for showcasing her! That opera part was so cute and great. I remembered it. The documentary was called "In Her Own Voice', I think. A great auto-biographical. Yes, those sustained notes! Wow.

Am watching your channel for the first time. Linda Ronstadt is a phenomenon. Is there ANY genre that she couldn't do and do it to the "Nth Degree"? I've been listening to her music from the beginning and am blessed to have seen her in concert starting in the early 70's. When "What's New" came out in the 80's is when I realized Just How Good her voice is.... "Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out to Dry" or her version of "Someone to Watch Over Me" with Nelson Riddle !!! Well... still one of the top albums of my lifetime.

This just popped up on my feed, I've never seen your videos before. I'm not sure why it popped up now, but It's a good video! Okay, Linda, she opened for Jackson Brown on the first night of his first tour as a single artist. Jackson explained that his band worked on the set for three weeks and he hoped they had it right. Linda sat on a stool, played the acoustic guitar and sang. She was sooooo good we gave her THREE STANDING OVATIONS. She was the best, or one of the best three or four vocalists of the era. The other outstanding thing about Linda was how she could do cover after cover and put the original recordings to shame.
Rick Beato talks about how when he puts on anything from Joni Mitchell he ends up in tears. For me it was always Linda, if I hear almost anything from Heart Like A Wheel, Prisoner In Disguise or Hasten Down The Wind I'll end up in a puddle. Writing that prompted me to put on one of those songs, and sure enough, even before the intro is over, tears are filling my eyes as Someone To Lay Down Besides Me plays.
Hey Bethany can you do a video on Al Jarreau? He is the only male vocalist that uses affectation (quite a bit) without ruining a song. It would be interesting to hear the technical side of what he's doing on a song like Spain - as an example.

Of all the vocal coaches, you are the only one I know who has done this tour of Ronstadt, who is one singer you cannot encapsulate in a single song. She has a generational voice and she evolved from Stone Pony into Heart Like a Wheel and beyond to all the places you showed and more. A really nice job on your part, and not an easy one to pull off.
