    I feel since it WAS 20 years since the last one, people's expectations were through the roof as to what to expect, but what they got was an Indiana Jones movie. They were set in the 1930's as a homage to the adventure serials in the 30's. The Crystal Skull was set in the 1950's as this was when science fiction become a mainstream genre, so it's also an homage to that as well. I thought it was a great movie.

      Yes, the sudden integration of '50s culture and phenomena into a movie series that had only previously been set in the '30s was likely jarring to a lot of people... and the MacGuffin was also probably too obscure for a lot of people to get behind as well. I mean, most of those who had a Judeo-Christian upbringing were at least somewhat familiar with the Ark of the Covenant and the Holy Grail, and the Shankara stones were easy enough to relate to. But how many people actually know anything about crystal skulls?

      So, hypothetically, what do you think it would be like if they rebooted the franchise in the 2050's an had it take place in the early 2000's? Purely hypothetical. Please don't go to war with me in the replies.

    It's ok to like this movie. You don't have two decades of nit-picky hero worship clouding your viewpoint. Surviving a nuclear blast in a fridge or finding aliens is just as believable as an 800 year old knight bestowing immortality or a cult priest pulling someone's flaming heart out of their still living chest.

    "Nuking the Fridge" is a subtle nod to the original storyline of Back to the Future, when Doc Brown used a fridge for a time machine and Marty had to drive it to a nuclear testing group in Nevada to get hit by a bomb (1.21 Gigawatts!) rather than a Delorean hit by lightning.

    Part of the reason this movie is different from the other three is the time period that this one takes place in. The first three were set in the 1930's and done in a style found in old adventure serials found in the old movie theaters. The style of this one is set in the 1950's. The old adventure serials from the 1930's weren't the theme found in the '50's. The theme and style in this movie is the science fiction B-movie, which explains the extraterrestrial elements. The Soviets were the primary villains as the time period was also very embroiled in the Cold War. A lot of anti-communist sentiment was found on college campuses and the federal government. This is a good movie with its flaws. The fifth film will be released next year and will likely be the last one. Composer John Williams stated that the fifth will be his final movie to score for. The riding with Pacho Villa is found in the series "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles" which shows how Indy became the type of adventurer that he is. He met a lot of historical figures prior to Raiders of the Lost Ark.

    • @Logan_Baron
      @Logan_Baron 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      But you don't need to only use the theme that was popular during the time period it was set in. Having it set in the 50s shouldn't preclude it from being able to use an adventure serial, especially when that is the whole concept of Indiana Jones. It's not the same as not being able to set a wild west story in 1980. Coming of age movies weren't popular in the 50s, but many coming of age movies are set in the 50s.

    • @greencello599
      @greencello599 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Logan_Baron The most popular theme in 1950's cinema was the rising genre of science fiction. There were some westerns and other action films, but at the time they weren't as popular as a sci-fi alien invasion movie. The first three were centered on powerful artifacts connected to either the Hebrews, Hindus, or Christians. That was appropriate for adventures set in the 1930's. For an adventure set in the 1950's, an artifact connected to something that could be attributed to sci-fi, ie aliens. That's what an Indiana Jones adventure is about in some way. Learning about the artifact and the race to keep the item out of more dangerous hands. Knowing what your limits are and leaving certain mysteries buried.

      Imagine if the last one were based on today's time (more likely past Indy's lifetime). The modern generation's Jones(es) would complain about the multiple groups of enemies they face today, Mutt (Henry III) argues with them about how his father faced against the Kaiser's forces, the Nazis twice, the Thuggies, and the Soviets, and then the modern generation would roast his argument by bluntly and calmly saying " _... Well, I'm (we're) so happy my(our) great grandpa Indy faced against all those guys ONE ORGANIZATION AT A TIME._ "
      Their point being they'd have to deal with a lot of today's bad/evil organizations at once, like the Talibán, ISIS, North Korea, the drug cartel, Somalian pirates, possibly even Russia, and even more so Anonymous.

    Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was very similar to Temple of Doom in my mind. There are some very good, very Indiana Jones parts to it, but there are also some parts that aren't too great, and some that just outright miss the mark. It's not the worst thing in the world, but it certainly isn't on par with Raiders of the Lost Arc or The Last Crusade.

    The scene you skipped over where Indiana tells mutt that he was kidnapped by Pancho Villa is a call back to a television series called Young Indiana Jones. The first episode had Indiana running away from home at age 16 (shortly after the adventure with the gold cross in Indiana Jones and the last crusade) and getting kidnapped by Pancho Villa and then joining Pancho Villa's struggle for freedom for Mexicans.

    Things I liked: Indy, Marion, their wedding, John Williams’ score, the idea of crystal skulls as the treasure, and the basic settings.
    Things I didn’t like: Overuse of CGI animals, lack of gore or tension, the crystal skull power was too vague, the villains were bland, and, for me, seeing the actual alien made it a little dumb. Oddly enough I enjoyed the fridge scene. I don’t hate the film, but it’s definitely my least favorite, so far. There’s still one more coming next year. Hoping the series ends on a higher note.

    There are a lot of us who like this film because it's an Indiana Jones film, and Marion returned. I was never a fan of the Mutt name or character, but I can see why it was written in. They wanted to pass the torch, so to speak, even though Shia sabotaged his own career right after this so he fell out of favor with everyone who would have been curious about him extending the franchise. I felt this film really had to be focused on South America as so much archeology is done there but everything we've gotten so far has been focused on Christian history. South America deserved some love too, even if the CG was over the top as far as the boobytraps were concerned. The Crystal Skull is based on real crystal skulls found. Whether you choose to believe their story or not is up to you, but someone could just as easily say the same thing about the Ark or the Grail. It'll be interesting to see the next film in the franchise this June 30th, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Given that neither Spielberg or Lucas are involved, we might just get something entirely new and exciting. I like all of the films for their own reasons. I mean, who wouldn't want to ride in one of those ore carts in Temple of Doom?! This film was good, even if I wish they'd thrown more actual history and archeology into it.

    That's because a large part of the plot was based on New Age BS. Crystal skulls, grey aliens, UFOs... Not to mention bad script writing. For example, the magnetism in the warehouse came & went according to the needs of the plot. It wasn't consistent. Don't get me started on that idiotic A-bomb scene.
    We have new villains, but since most of Hollywood are closet socialists, they didn't portray the Soviet agents as the horrible scum they were. The script writers heart wasn't in it.
    Despite the occasional nugget such as Marion's appearance, the story just wasn't that good.

    As a story, this movie is just fine and I like it. It's the special effects and action sequences that I don't like, there's just too much CGI and it doesn't feel realistic at all. Like the scene where the bad guys car comes crashing out of the forest and lands on their car, but none of them are hurt. If this movie was done with practical effects, that scene wouldn't exist, because you could never make it look convincing. But with CGI they can make it appear to happen...but your brain just knows it can't happen. Same with the scene of Mutt swinging on vines, Indy surviving being tossed around in the refrigerator, etc. That kind of stuff works in a superhero movie, but it doesn't feel like an Indy movie. It's way over the top and just takes me right out of the movie.
    Also, Harrison Ford is just too old to still be playing these action guy parts.

    • @Galiant2010
      @Galiant2010 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd like to remind you of Temple of Doom with the mine cart action sequence. Specifically the part where they launch off one end of damaged track and land back on the other side. Also, the water that flowed after them. The bad guy knocked over a single large tank of water to flow after them. Look at the volume of that tank. Then think about how fast they were going on the cart and how long the scene was. They went pretty far so there was a lot of volume in that tunnel for that water to go (including that lava ravine that they jumped over) yet at the end that water is as big and powerful (if not more so) than when it first came out of the tank. Or at the beginning when they jumped out of the plane and survived on an inflatable raft.
      In the first movie he swam the large distance from the boat to the sub without being noticed and then, presumably, got on board and hid with no one noticing because he wouldn't have survived on the exterior if they dived. And then when docked he managed to get off the sub and hide, unnoticed. In the third movie he does the jousting move on the bike where he grabs the flag pole and charges the german biker and knocks him off. Normal jousting lances are designed to break to absorb impact so it does minimal damage to the user, Indy just grabbed a random flagpole. Yes, they showed it breaking, but there was no reason for him to realistically expect it would. And then there was the whole tank scene that had many unrealistic moments.
      That's what Indiana Jones movies are. Comedy with semi-plausible realistic action mixed with some fantastical aspect.

    You should be able to find plenty of info on the crystal skull(s). That was being examined on all those history/science channels, like Discovery channel and History channel and National Geographic channel the like - this was back around 2011/2012 when that Mayan prophecy was getting around (that the end of the world would be Dec 21 2012, or "12/21/12"). I vaguely recall those programs describing some legend about 13 crystal skulls (which looked very human, not oblong/alien as featured in this film), and all 13 being hidden around the world and all must be uncovered and reunited in order to avoid the catastrophe of the prophecy or some such. That was a decade ago and it's all very hazy to me, but I do recall it being "a thing" from actual history/mythological lore, and not just some crap Hollywood made up from scratch.

It seems to me that so many forget that these flicks are supposed to be “paying homage” to the B movies of the periods, in which they are set. In the 50’s, they were about Russians/Cold War, atomic age, giant bugs, & flying saucers.
    Sure, the CGI isn’t always perfect, but looking back to the (Not so) special effects used in “Temple of Doom” (Especially in the final act.), I think they did alright. All of these flicks are more “Adventure/Fantasies”, & nothing more/different. Just sit back, & enjoy the ride! 😁

    I think the genre switch between 30's serial adventure and 50's weird sci-fi was a bit much for a lot of the audience, especially with how hard they leaned into it. I also think it was unnecessary as serial fiction and broad action-adventure were still very much a thing in the 50's.
    Also, the choice of MacGuffin is troublesome. In Raiders and The Last Crusade, the MacGuffins were among the most well-known and legendary treasure objects in the entire western canon. The stone in the Temple of Doom wasn't, but it also wasn't played up as much.
    For this one, though, they chose another actual, well-known artifact, but instead of something like the Ark of the friggin' Covenant or the literal Holy Grail, they went with a schlocky hoax object beloved by crystal-gazing "psychics" and Ancient Aliens conspiracy fruitcakes.
    Also, instead of the supernatural/paranormal element of the movie coming from mainstream Judeo-Christian or Hindu religion in a generally positive light, this movie had angry grey aliens and a cheesy psychic crystal skull that you've only ever heard of on those crappy TV specials they used to only play in the middle of the night.
    And then, a lot of us hardcore fans just didn't like Mutt. The character was more annoying than charming, was nothing like his dad, and looked goofy. And the swinging monkey scene was so cartoony that it completely broke genre and took us right out of the movie. There was an audible and tangible joint sigh of relief in the theater when Indy took his hat back from Mutt at the end. If he hat put it on, we would have felt, if not actually verbally said, "Hell no!"

    The CGI was bad even by standards of that time. I remember getting the DVD the day it was out, and the CGI was... not great. For example T2 effects still hold up perfectly, even when it's much older. There's other problems with this movie though, personally I think it shouldn't exist

  • @erikbjelke4411

    A big part of the "problem" with this movie is that Indiana Jones is well-rooted in the old adventure serials and "two-fisted tales." That's a big problem with especially Temple of Doom, it relies on a lot of stereotypes and tropes common to those stories that became grossly offensive even by the 80s, never mind today. But this film is set in the 50s, and a lot had changed post WWII. The movie is, in part, dealing with the fact that Indy is very much a relic of a bygone era, but still has some adventure in him. But that adventure is different because the times are different. Instead of artifacts, its aliens, as sci-fi and sci-fi B movies took off at that time. The bad guys are Soviets instead of Nazis because it's now the Cold War.
    I still think it's a perfectly enjoyable Indiana Jones movie, and while Raiders and Last Crusade are definitely the best, no Indiana Jones movie is a waste of time.

      It's mostly ok, but what ruins it for me is the stupid sword fight on the vehicles through the jungle and the swinging through the trees with the monkeys. If it wasn't for that, I'd put it on a similar level to The Temple of Doom.

    This movie is ok. Just not up to the expectations people had after so many years. And people did not like the idea of having aliens instead of just all being part of human history.
    One thing I'm not sure you noticed: when he was caught on the vine with the monkey, the monkey had the same kind of pompadour hairdo, and I think the monkeys were supposed to think he was one of their own which is why they helped him fight off the bad guys. The matching hair thing got a laugh from the theatre audience.

    I'm really torn on this one. I love the ideas they had for the direction to go. They kept it kind of tied to the era it took place in. There were some awesome set pieces and action stuff... but then there are monkeys in trees and Shia getting his balls whacked. Marion and John Hurt were awesome. I think it was trying to do too many things at once. There were a lot of side quests almost. It's still fun, but it isn't as good. Really hoping the next one lives up to the old feel.

      I understand why though; they were trying to close the book on the story with this one, because their attempt on trying to end the series with the Last Crusade wasn't enough (the fans still demanded continuation).
      They threw in the one trap they planned to put in for some time on previous movies but didn't succeed on those (so they threw it into video game versions instead), and this time it finally succeeded. The mentioned trap is the spiral retracting staircase.

    There are parts of this movie I enjoyed, but the majority of it was just.......eh. I'm all for suspending disbelief, but they went over the top at times with this. The refrigerator part, the swinging on vines, the gigantic flesh eating ants, driving off a cliff into a tree, etc. I don't even think the alien stuff was too out there. The *way* they did it wasn't really my cup of tea, but using that in general was rather interesting and unique. The original trilogy is great, but this one is very mediocre in my eyes.

    Everyone hates this movie, and it doesn't deserve the hate. I like this movie. Is it perfect? No, but it's still Indiana Jones, and I still find it entertaining. Also, I prefer it over Dial of Destiny. I mean I didn't hate that movie but I didn't like it to me that movie was eh in my opinion, but this one is still fun but the complaints about it are oh Indiana Jones shouldn't have aliens in it, or nuking of the fridge, also lots of uses of cgi well my counter-arguments of those are oh so you are saying that there shouldn't be aliens in it then there shouldn't have been ghosts coming out of the ark in raiders, or a guy's heart being pulled out of a guy's chest by hand in the temple of doom, or a guy turning into a skeleton in last crusade after drinking the wrong grail those were supernatural fantasy things that happened in those movies that was ok but aliens made out of crystal and extraterrestrial is not ok? The Indiana Jones movies are action adventure B movies, as in they are supposed to be over the top and have things that are silly and supernatural and even extraterrestrial in them. You are not supposed to take it seriously. You should enjoy the ride and have fun nuking the fridge. May I remind you of the raft falling out of an airplane in Temple of Doom? If it was okay for that to happen in that movie, why wasn't Indy climbing into a fridge and surviving a nuclear blast not okay? Lots of uses of CGI, so why not? It was 2008, lots of movies were using it, and it's a top adventure movie, so that's fine. Sorry for the long rant, but the bottom line is this movie is not as bad as everyone thinks it is.

There’s a show on Discovery+ called “Expedition Unknown” with Josh Gates and he checks out those glyphs in the sand and tries to make one himself. There’s another episode where he investigates a crystal skull that’s supposed to have magical power.

    Despite the hate this one gets I've always appreciated that it tried to do something a little different, even though it didn't always work. I totally agree one of the big letdowns was the cheesy CG effects. They were cheesy even when it was new. I also think it leaned a little too heavily into the 50's sci-fi B movie genre it was inspired by. Marion was great to have back after all the time that passed, and I don't have anything against the unknown son story, but Shia just wasn't it. Other then those things the rest of the movie was really solid I think.

    Realistically, Indiana Jones 4 was THE first of the "decades later sequel" reboot. This was closely followed by Fast and Furious 4, and so on. And considering how ridiculous franchises have now got, Indiana Jones 4 doesn't seem so ridiculous after all. It truly was the first of the "bring back a franchise with the older actors" scenario. If you compare it to today's standards, it wouldn't have copped the severe criticism it did upon release. Indiana Jones 4 is the reason why there's no longer a discussion board on IMDB, because the arguing got completely out of hand, so they banned it. At the end of the day, it's not as bad as people say, and I personally rate it above Temple of Doom.
