Prius P lock or Park lock repair with Red Triangle

- 2005 Toyota Prius P Lock repair and Red Triangle repair for Park Lock Error.
In order to make this repair, a short piece of wire needs to be routed from the engine fuse block 7.5 amp P CON MAIN fuse to the blue wire on the connector. This wire will supply the required 12 volts to the Park lock and remove the error.
This problem use to only happen in wet weather and now happens all of the time. I believe there is a wire that gets corroded over time and finally fails. This fix has not caused any side effects.
This will remove the Red Triangle and stop the P lock warning.
I only show the battery readings because everyone associates this error to a failing battery. My 12v battery was replaced five years ago and this fix did nothing to the battery readings at the display.
I was not getting any voltage at the blue wire until this jumper was installed.

How do you connect the wire to the fuse? Just put it in there then insert the fuse?
Thanks so much! You saved me from calling a tow truck and was literally on my last errand before returning home. Before calling one, I thought I’d at least try to take out the fuse and put it back in my 2007 Prius to see if somehow there was a bad connection there and it worked!!! I still had a red triangle going back home but I didn’t care at that point as long as it’ll get me home.
I got home turned it on and off a couple of times then the red triangle came off. Maybe the fuse was going bad? I’m getting a new fuses tomorrow.

Did you say it fixed your intermittent issue on your 06? My 06 has this problem about once, maybe twice a month
If you don't mind how many times have you had your spark plugs changed?
I have changed them only two times with 420k miles total. If you are burning oil use Restore Engine Restorer and mine stopped burning oil. I used one can every oil change
Jacob and all, the Prius problem is not the small auxiliary 12v battery which is simply used to power the computer and peripheral electronics of Prius. The real problem when you see a red triangle of death is that one of the 14 pack voltages inside your main battery under the back seat is off by more than 10% of the rest of the pack voltages. A pack voltage is the total voltage of two cells side by side each other. On my Prius 2004 which is currently having red triangle, pack voltage at position #6 cannot hold a charge, ie, during charging is it 12% higher than the rest of the packs, and during discharge, it immediately goes down to about 7% below the rest of the pack, all the while the rest of the pack have voltages close to each other. I use Dr. Prius on my cell phone with a compatible wireless OBD dongle attached to car's female computer interface port. It allows me to make me see the individual pack voltages in real time. So, I put stepped hard on my brake, put Prius on ready and drive shift, and pressed gas pedal to the floor. This charges all cells evenly. As some pack voltages reach their maximum, I keep going, and extra charge simply convert into heat as you can hear the fan at the right side of back seat going crazy. I keep on pressing pedal and the packs with lower voltages keep rising. Ultimately, voltages of the packs with lower voltages catch up and rises to less than half the limit. I then erase the main battery error code using Special Feature menu of Dr. Prius, turn off the car, and unscrew the negative of the 12v battery for 5 minutes. Red triangle goes away. Now this works only if your worst pack is still recoverable, else, the bad pack will have to be replaced. Individual cells are cheap these days on eBay or amazon. Recovering AGP batteries mean doing three cycles of discharging them down to 30% then charging them full (I have a charger/discharger from www.hybridautomotive.com). A quicker approach would be to just replace your whole main battery with a refurbished unit with, say 3 years warranty. They can cost you between $1500 to $3000 at eBay or amazon, then hire a Prius shop to replace the main battery for you, or scout www.priuschat.com for detailed instructions on how to replace your main hybrid/traction battery.

Great information. Mine is also in park lock (can't switch to drive or reverse). I find it incredibly STUPID that ONE fking wire is preventing this vehicle from starting and driving. Sooooo dumb. I will check this wire on mine to see if that's why it won't start. I'm a mechanic and you basically need an Electrical Engineering degree to work on these things. I could fix the damn space shuttle before I could have figured this out. wow....
I think it is corrosion because it seems to happen in the northern states
Could be the water pump by the fuse relay . Mine went and made my car dead . No lights just key beep and door locks worked that’s it
Hey Jacob, just wanted to LYK the HID leveling sensor is fine, the issue was the bracket, it was broke from where it mounts on cross support or axle, I filed both ends till I had clean metal then I superglued the pc., seems to be holding ok, had no welder, and it’s pretty hard to find that particular piece that I would need. My 2008 prius started doing this yesterday i replaced the 12 v battery and is till doing it i notice that if ishut it down and let it sit for a while tha car will run fine again for a little while and the again the triangle comes on and it wont stay in park

Jacob , thanks for the video, It worked for me , didn't even jump it with the jumper, I was gonna check to make sure it had power before inserting it to the blue wire , so when I went to turn it on all the warning lights were gone, pulled the jumper off the fuse side and still no warning lights, gonna gas up and go for a test drive , thx again

Been struggling with this park pawl triangle for months. Changed 12v battery, checked fuses, wiring, changed trans computer etc. with no luck. I will try this and hopefully will fix?? THANK YOU!!!!

Wierd, had same issue. Manualy checking battery didn't do anything but by-passing with that wire got it started. Such a strange hack.
Hello Jacob, I have 08 Gen2 and 3wks ago, I have the master triangle, vcs, abs,traction control, brake lights came on the dashboard, then I used the OBDII to read the code, but after that it was said No Code found. Then I thought was hybrid battery, I removed and tested all the modules cells, they all above 7.7 and there is only one shown 7.5 . Then I talked to someone who sold modules cells on Amazon about my hybrid voltage, they said the hybrid battery system in good health no need to replace that module cell , and tested the 12v battery at 11.6 ,and I changed the new one at 12.8 . After that all done my car still not won't start, and all the lights still shown , and I try to read the code again, and still No Code found, after that I try to used Eraser function on OBDII to clear it. And try to start up the car,then its start that so strange to me,but when I drove about 5 miles, the red triangle and brake lights came on, when I put the car in P, and try to start the car ,its not Ready function, won't start. And I did the same way, used OBDII clear the code, then the car in Ready and start, but it still the same issue drive for few miles Red triangle and brake lights on, and won't start after turning off the car.??? So,after I watched your video clip, I think you can help me to figure it out what is my car issue, please give me an advice. Thank you

@@flj232 My issue actually turned out to be slightly different than this video. I was only getting this error because my 12V battery was bad. If you're seeing this error specifically in the video I'd highly suggest taking your battery into a local auto parts store and having it tested.
So I replaced the 12V battery and yet still my car wasn't turning on and was getting all the lights (however the p lock error went away). I got my hands on an OBD2 code reader that was Prius compatible and was able to obtain some codes that showed my HV battery had a leak. Luckily it was under warranty and got replaced. So my other suggestion is that if your 12V battery is not the issue you should really try to find a code reader that works with your car. I actually had to try 4 different ones before I got one that was able to show me any codes. A basic code reader most likely won't show you anything. The model that worked for me was the Innova OBD Code Reader 5210 that I had borrowed from a local O'reilly's store. Hope this helps! Best of luck.
Advance Auto had to charge my battery to get it up to proper Volts & CCA of 410, They said just trickle charging won't work it has to be a certain kind of charger.
Thanks, I think you give it power to the P CON relay coil for shift actuator , I believe that blue wire come from TCM (located under the blower motor, maybe TCM is bad.

On my 2008 toyota prius there is one more blue wire ,but some reason the blue wires are on different spots.

See how old the 12v battery is in the back passenger side trunk. They are usually good for five years. I bought mine from the dealership for $200

Thanks for the video I have a 2006 prius I have the same problem, but the warning does not come all the time but sometimes and when I put in forward gear it drives normally, recently my battery goes low and had to jump start at least 4 times , and also the blue wire is there but not in the top line but 2nd row so do I need to conect only to the blue wire ? please help. You may notice the issue is worse during wet weather. Our problem started intermittently too. You should replace the small battery in the back with a Toyota Battery. I was able to get it from a dealer for 185.00 plus a 25.00 core. You should not have to keep charging the 12 volt battery. They are only good for about five years. When adding the wire it will go from the fuse to the blue wire, but a low battery causes this same issue. The new wire helps if the original wire is corroded and is getting poor voltage. Most problems related to the Prius are low voltage issues from the 12 volt battery.

Anyway you can make a video or have pictures how you put the wire into the fuse and the other end.

I have the same issue I went to two different dealership and get responses we don’t know what is wrong and they said it will cost me around 700-800 ti find out what is the problem so I tried jumping to fuse but didn’t worked for me everything looks good on car but just showing “p” lock mechanism error its going away and coming back everyday. I checked my battery volts is 12.3 I don’t think cause of battery so do you guys any recommendations about it Im sick of this problem.

Dude, that is a symptoms that caused by dying auxiliary battery. 12V battery.
Thank You, Jacob, for this very helpful video. My car Prius (2004 model) has similar problem but I cannot seem to find a solution for it. Basically, all the electrics switch complety off and I cannot turn car on. Then after about 10 to 15 mins, and very luckly, the electrics stats to gradually come back on and the Parking Lock fault ( just as in your vid) is displaced. Eventually the car will start and work fine for a while. After a day or sometimes after a few hours the same fault happens. This started straight after a full service by Toyota dealer, last week. They will not accept responsibilty and I cannot afford their £85/hr plus any repair costs :( . Do you know any solution for my car's fault, please?
Sounds like your 12 volt battery in the back. Has that been replaced? How are your cells on you hybrid battery? I changed mine after 12 years.
For me, It just goes away once I put it in gear and move it a bit and park it again.
Just did this on my 2008 Prius, Gen 2. It worked. However, I'm a little concerned of long term damage leaving the jumper wire on it. Any comments on this?
You can remove the fuse box and replace the existing corroded wire. All this does is reroute power from the existing corroded wire to another route. I’ve had it on for over a year.

@@jefflueth6126 add a 7.5 amp fuse with the jumper wire. I've heard some fix this with cleaning the blades of the 7.5 amp fuse.
My catalyc comverter got stolen on my 2009 prius.. I drove like that for less than 2 miles and got red triangle with exclamation point on it. When that happened car started to loose power and eventually died on me:( right now I have it at a muffler shop where they will put another catalyc converter on but car still does not turn on..when I press on power button all the lights come on with rd d triangle like if car it's on but engine not on. Lights, radio and power windows work . The windows are slow though so I don't know if battery it's dying. If I remember I have one purple bar. Also keep getting a message about something that car needs to be on flat surface and something about the transmission .
A while back it completely died on my while I was changing the passenger mirror, after I was done I gave it a jump and everything was good. This time it won't move from one purple bar even after a jumped it

have you checked for DTC codes using a OBDII reader to see what codes are showing a fault? it sounds like a bad cell in your hybrid battery. The small 12v battery can also show good but there is a wire harness in the rear of the vehicle on the passenger side that can fail due to water damage from the trunk seal. I have a 2009 that had this issue and had to require it. it is on the passenger side behide the rear passenger door inside the plastic interior.
No I have not check the codes..but somebody told me to check the 12v battery in the car diagnostic screen to see if is good, also to run a wire from the 7.5A fuse to blue cable on fuse box, also to disconnect the negative terminal from battery for about 5 min, also to unplug tje orange plug on hybrid battery for about 5 min to reset hybrid system..
Hopefully by putting the catalyc converter in fixes it cause it was working fine before the cat got stolen. Well, about a year ago car completely died on me no lights nothing so I gave it a jump and it was fine till 2 weeks ago when cat got stolen.
A car battery at 12 volts is only fifty percent charged.
I have the same issue on my 2004 pruis but it just doesn't start, unless I disconnect the battery for a min and connect it back, then the car will start and work just fine, untill I turn it off then it won't turn back on, with the issue saying it's on p lock mechanism apply brake or something like that
You kind of did okay, but the display has to display READY!!!! If it doesn’t the car is not ready, right now this is my problem!!
Is the car in park? I have this p lock issue but my car wont even go into park it turns on but wont start. I can only shift it to neutral. I will press the park button (with brake pressed) and nothing will happen. Was yours like this?
Mine did not have that issue. I could still put it in drive and reverse. Try charging the auxiliary battery completely and see if that fixes your issue. When was the last time you replaced the auxiliary battery?

Yagiz Guc As far as I know this will only work for the Second Generation Prius from 2003 to 2009. You should try charging the 12 volt battery. When this auxiliary battery is slightly low the Prius can have electrical issues.

I just stripped the wire and pushed it into the existing connector or the other wire was at. On the other side with the fuse I simply strip the wire and made a U-shaped in allowed it to slip between the fuse blade

I haven’t heard about the gauge of wire, all you can do is try a basic wire, preferably with insulation around it and see what happens, but do LMK if you hear anything!

Hey Jacob, I was just on here the other day with 1 or 2 other people that are having issues with their red triangle light staying on!…in my case I just had the hybrid battery changed out, the 12V battery is checking out just fine!🤔 I’m starting to look into the the exhaust fan mounted not to far from the 12V battery to see if the connections there can be possibly corroded. At this point I’m pretty confused on what to do, if that checks out ok!..what you think!
Are you getting the park lock error? Do you have H ID headlights? It could also be the H ID headlight level sensor in the rear suspension. The level sensor will also cause a red triangle. They can be taken apart and cleaned or just replaced. I had to replace mine.
Jacob Dinverno you know it’s funny you mentioned that, because the day this all started to happen is the day I rotated my tires all the way around on the car. I had the car up and down in three different corners at different times, so now it has me wondering if something became unbalanced or out of wack after I was done! As far the park lock error that may of came on 1 or 2 times, but always went off, fairly quick!
Jacob Dinverno ya Jacob, although I didn’t get to it yet, it definitely looks like the HID sensor bracket became disconnected underneath there! Hoping that’s all it is, cause I hear the sensor and all is like 250 bucks or so! Thanks for getting me there, really appreciate that, and yes the idiot light is also lit on the dash!

I see the jumper wire connected to the left side of the fuse or fuse housing at three minutes 35 seconds into the video… Did you just push the wire in there like you did to the blue wire at the topside?
I placed the wire underneath the fuse and then brought it around and just pushed it into the connector up top.

This did not work for my car. It still gives the same error message and I can't even shift the car. I don't see how this wire will stay in there. a waste of time.
The wire did work for me. This was a workaround instead of removing the entire fuse block. Use 20 gauge solid strand wire and it should push into the space.

I used a very small 18 gauge solid wire from my garage that was used for a home thermostat I wired. The solid wire allows it to be pushed into the connector and also under the fuse. This wire bypasses the factory wire that is failing to supply the proper voltage. I hope this helps.

Did you take off the fuse to put wire in there? and did you take off blue cable on other side to put in new 18 gauge cable in or you just forced it in where the blue cable is on other side?
@@futbol1972 You have to remove the fuse and placed the wire under the fuse on the left side. The blue wire on the connector is not have to be removed, just push the new wire next to it so it makes contact.

Just use solid 16 gauge wire. I used 18 gauge solid strand wire from my sprinkler system or the furnace thermostat uses silicate. Stranded wire will be harder to push in
His 12v battery is weak. ANY 12v battery that shows only 11.8v after a charging is damaged. Replace it! He claims it is 5 years old anyway. Good sense tells up to REPLACE any battery that is 5 years old! This is especially true of the Prius, which is VERY fussy about voltage in general. Also Toyota has a bad habit of getting corroded terminals all over the car! Not too surprising that a terminal that is energized a lot and under the hood gets corroded some. All the wiring on a Prius is often undersized too. While sized well enough when new, they are somewhat undersized when corrosion and metal fatigue and age come along! Often a new battery can overcome this higher resistance, that is why most people replace the 12V battery, at lest at first.

At 3:30 you will see I used a new wire from the top fuse and pushed it into the blue wire connector. You can use an Add-a-fuse on Amazon and splice to the blue wire too. The blue wire is the problem, needs 12v. Basically you are bringing in 12v to the blue wire. It’s a common issue on the Prius with voltage issues. Sorry, I made this video 5 years ago
What kind of wire is this? Trying to find one now to purchase
I used a 16 gauge stranded wire that I had lying around from an old speaker. 18 gauge will work too. The wire should be insulated. Just strip about a half inch off both ends and use one side under the fuse and the other end pushed into the pin connector.

Verify you have voltage on the new wire you added off the fuse first. If there is not voltage you may have not secured the wire enough. If there is voltage verify you are making a good connection at the connector.
Jacob Dinverno thanks for the reply! I done fucked it real good now. I pulled the shift motor off the transmission for some reason....the wire was all corroded so I cleaned it up but now the thing is stuck in park and I can’t move it at all.🤦♂️🤷🏻♂️
