I took a long trip in my 2010 Toyota Prius and was soon stuck with the "check hybrid system" warning light. After trying to replace the 12v battery with no luck I realized that my gas gauge was faulty and that I only needed to refill the gas and reset the computer. The Prius is known for having faulty gas gauges, always fill your Prius up completely. It even says it in the owners manual, never just add a few gallons because the gas gauge can be inaccurate.

@@JakeTieslerI've heard things about the bladder breaking and not showing the right amount. Some have mentioned the gauge going bad. I got a higher milage 2008 Prius recently and it had seemed it was telling me it held 7 gallons instead of the 10 or so. But recently, after 2 months it went to 7 gallons on 1 bar left.
So, I've also heard it may take a while to reset if not driven a while.
All in all, the MPG seems to always be correct per gas up. So that's good.

Really short review (no need to watch whole video):
    1. He had driven so long distance that the car was out of gasoline (but he didn't know that because of faulty indicator)
    2. Because of this he drained the battery in EV mode almost to empty.
    3. He thought he killed his battery, but it only needed a gasoline to be filled up.

It is not so much that the gauge is faulty, but the reading has probably become lost by not completely filling the tank. The reading is heavily processed to prevent it from seeming contrary at times - if you drive a hundred miles on a full tank and refill it, the reading will probably not change, and neither will the miles remaining. They gradually correct themselves as the tank nears empty. Repeated partial filling makes the gauge accuracy drift until it is completely filled again. If you fill it when it is no more than 2/3 full and fill it until it clicks off, life is good.

Thanks for this video. This just happened to me a couple of hours ago and your video was the first video that showed up on google after a search for what can cause the CHECK HYBRID SYSTEM to pop up.
For those wanting to know what to do, here are the steps:
    1. Fill gas tank (I put in 4 gallons)
    2. Unplug the 12v battery negative lead (3:05 in the video)
    3. Unplug the main battery with the orange handle (3:10)
    4. Wait at least 5 minutes.
    5. After waiting, plug both batteries back in (12v and main)
    6. Start the car and you’re good to go with all the warnings gone.
Like Jake said, apparently some older Priuses can have an inaccurate gas gauge. While the car displays it has 2 bars of fuel left, there’s actually no more gas and the car proceeds to use all the battery juice leading to the CHECK HYBRID SYSTEM warnings. The car thinks something is wrong with the battery or batteries when all the car may just need is gas.

You don't have to disconnect the negative terminal on the 12v battery (3:05 in the video). You can go to the fuse box under the hood and disconnect the large white connector there. Sorry, I don't know what else to call it.

Great advice for us prius drivers ! The engines is so quiet you could pass it off , I watch the display that shows the sequence of charging this shows when the engine is running and charging the battery so it does help / Been a mechanic for about 70 years and this new technology takes a lot of research to understand the function of all the systems. I inherited this car from a family member so again in my life it's open that book. I have to know how every thing works or it drives me buggy. Was a aircraft mechanic and a automotive and believe me aircraft is mostly remove and replace what the computer tells you to. I'm old school where the books and the training and the ear was the major diagnostic tool ! Oh well still got time to learn about this technology ! The best thing is to whatever type of car , always keep the gas at 1/2 to prevent the fuel pump from sucking air ! had many replaced because the customer ran the tank too low !

I also went on a long road trip up into the mountains, and just before I hit my destination about 50 miles out, my right passenger brakes started grinding. I had no idea that the brakes on that side was even going out, because it never made any kind of squealing or any indicator that the break was an issue. I was 20 miles past the last auto parts store, so I decided to just go for it and see what happens. Well of course I got to my destination and the next day I drove another 20 miles to go get some breakfast, and that's when all of my dashboard lit up. The check hybrid system light came on and all of my indicator lights came on. So I decided to go and find out a parts store to get the new brakes and put them on myself. After doing so, all of my lights were off and everything was back to normal, until a week later when suddenly my check hybrid system light came on as well as the check engine light and a good old exclamation point.
Thankfully, that did not affect the engine power and I've still been able to drive, just without the Hybrid battery assist. I've been able to drive for the past week and everything's been fine, and I definitely still want to get into the shop to see if there's a way they can help me with it, but I figured I would check online first, and found your video. I disconnected the 12-volt as well as the Hybrid battery for 5 minutes, and everything is back to normal!!!
On another note, there's no way any Prius driver should ever not know when their gas tank is low. I reset my trip mileage every time I fill up, and I always know how many miles I have on that particular tank. You should average 400 miles per tank, give or take depending on how you drive, though your MPG meter will reset every time you reset your trip meter, so you'll know exactly how many miles per gallon you're getting, so if you're averaging 37 miles per gallon, then your tank is going to get you about 370 miles.

Whenever your car does something weird, dont speculate and try stuff. Ask someone with a scan tool, or a mechanic to scan your car. Its a very quick and cheap process, dont let them charge you more than 30 bucks. You can also consider getting your own cheap scan tool if you have an older car. The codes tell you exactly whats wrong and you dont run the risk of missing a major fault that later kills your drivetrain.

  • @flagmichael

Prius from the beginning has had unreliable fuel level indications. In the first gen days we called it a "guess gauge." Our third gen has the same old characteristic: the reading will not increase unless you put about three gallons or more in the tank to prevent it from randomly increasing as you drive. If the engine dies because it runs out of gas, enough gas has to be added to turn off the "low gas" warning in order to get the engine to start. (I think the owner's manual says that as well.)
As you say, "do not let it run out of gas." It is always a good idea to fill up (and _always_ fill the tank if you can, to prevent the gauge accuracy from drifting) before the level gets below 1/4 tank, but it is not a killer. The same can be said for nearly all cars.
Good job replacing the 12V battery. Since it does not crank the engine, most 12V battery failures in Toyota hybrids are a surprise. I bought a $15 load tester from Harbor Freight and check my battery annually.
18 years with nothing but Prius in the family. Most reliable cars we have ever had!

Thank you so much Jake! you save me from buying a new battery! I had exactly the same issue. I just bought a high mileages / used 2011 Prius. My gas gauges has been on two bars for a little long time and I thought "great! the Prius really save gas!". The next morning trying to go to work, I couldn't start the car. After 3 attempts to start, the battery gone dead. No knowledge of Hybrid, I thought my starter went bad already, or my battery got too old and need a new replacement. My concern was bringing to the shop, they will run thru all diagnostics and have you replace everything before they will really fix it for you. I don't have that much money to spend on the car and need to save it for my children college funds. I searched further for a few days, trying to diagnose the problem myself and found your video. After watching your video, I heard "..the (faulty) two bars gas gauge!" It is the same darn symptom! I went home in a hurry to gave it a try, and it started!!!! Thank you so much! So, i now i have to keep a little extra gas in my garage in-case it happened again.
THIS IS SOMETHING ALL PRIUS SHOULD KNOW!!!! I think Toyota should recall to fix this faulty gas gauge. You should add to the title "faulty 2 bars gas gauge"

Worked perfect for my daughter's 2010 Prius, she had the CHECK HYBRID SYSTEM warning light on the other day. It was still running fine, but I could tell the car was constantly running on the engine and never switched to the hybrid system. I disconnected the black negative terminal on the 12 volt batter for 5 minutes, reconnected it and like magic the car was completely back to normal with no CHECK HYBRID SYSTEM light and it was running off of the hybrid system again perfectly. Great instructions and this really will fix your problem if you're having hybrid system issues that really are not related to a bad hybrid battery. I hear that 2010 Prius and up has much more reliable hybrid systems than previous models.

This is a great video and thank you for sharing it on TH-cam. My 2011 Prius Check Hybrid System light came on for the first time. I do have over 215,000 miles on it but it's well maintained. I do a lot of food deliveries and noticed my gas gauge had two cells left but never lowered to the blinking warning feature for the first time. The car was moving but lack power to it. Freaked out, pulled over, and contacted the dealer and tow company. Dealer wanted $140.00 for a diagnostic check. Cut my engine off for 5 min and started the car. The Check Hybrid System light was gone and the check engine indicator light was gone too. Put a full tank of gas in the car and no other warning lights came on. Amazing how durable and reliable the Prius is in the auto industry. I'll do a follow up to make sure the gas solved my Check Hybrid System light. Again, thanks for your presentation about this problem.

Inaccurate gas gauges are common on all vehicles with many thousands of miles. In the tank, there is a resistor that wears over time and essentially leaves a blank spot(s) in the wear area. The wear spot on the tank's resistor depends on your fuel filling patterns...always filling up on half or always running to empty.

Although any OBDII reader is a good thing to have, a comprehensive CAN bus interface like the BlueDriver is amazingly helpful for Toyota's hybrid systems. I got the $100 BlueDriver because it was one of the very few tools that would access the other ECMs in the first gen Prius non-CAN system... my son now has my 2002, with 206K miles on it.
Toyota hybrids have electric cooling pumps that only report through the check engine light, meaning when the Check Engine light comes on it is important to get off the road ASAP and see what is going on. Even the $10 bluetooth OBDII adapters are good enough for that.

Jake, Greetings from NJ. My son lives in Santa Monica. So, that was YOU who blocked traffic. LOL.
Seriously, I have a 2007 Prius which I bought used with 54k miles. It now has 232,230 miles and I just had to replace the hybrid battery due to red triangle of death. Thankfully, it cost less than $500 to replace it with a refurbished one. If you know what you're doing, it takes less than an hour to do it. Soon after I got the car, I too, ran out of gas. My gas gauge was accurate and had the low fuel warning, but thought I could make it. A gallon of gas later, and I was on my way. Incidentally, there's a procedure to reset the gas gas sensor so it reads accurately. I keep a fuel log so I can check the trip/fuel computer. When my low fuel warning comes on I know there is exactly 1.7 gallons left (your car may be different). You may be due for a new battery soon. I suggest you get the Mr Prius App and a wifi OBD2 connector to monitor your battery's health. Good luck and drive safe.

Thanks for the video. My prius shows full gas for a long time, and then when it's half, it's really about 1/4. In a related note, The 12 Volt battery (in that rear corner) is there to start the computer, which decides whether to engage the hybrid battery to start the car. If you ever have trouble charging the 12V battery from a jump (using the terminals near the engine), that is a sign the 12V battery is going bad and eventually will need to be replaced because it can no longer hold charge. The dying computer message will show something like 'put the car in park', but you won't be able to it because there isn't enough juice.

    • @zzzcocopepe

first off, thank you Mr. Tiesler! I had an identical situation occur to me 2 days ago. searched high and low for answers and this video is dead on exact. i have a 2014 prius c. the gas gage showed 2 bars, then went down to 1 bar, then for whatever reason went back up to 2 as i was driving home. started heading to a gas station and the dreaded "check hybrid system" warning turned on. pulled over, had my gf bring me a gas can full of fuel once i first watched this video, got gas in the car and then i followed this video to a "t" and 100% its how to fix it. it seems that the computer has an emergency shut off in my version of the car and once it feels the hybrid battery is in danger it diverts all efforts to gas. so even after i filled the tank it was just a gas powered vehicle fully, no longer diverting into EV mode at all, granted it appeared to charge the hybrid battery. not until i reset the computer via the 12v battery trick did it head back into full hybrid mode; as if nothing had ever happened. mine ended up being an $18 tank of gas (new tool set to loosen the negative battery bolt) ;) thanks for the great information and hopefully your video and my own experience with an identical set of circumstances can continue to save people from trouble!

With the in tank fuel filters, it is a good idea to ALWAYS fill up before a 1/4 tank. Since it is a real pain to change these filters, the dirt is trapped in the tank. This goes for all gas vehicles hybrid or not. Also, having more fuel increases head pressure making it easier on the electric fuel pump.

    • @allanc3655
      @allanc3655 ปีที่แล้ว +3

In tank fuel pumps are cooled by the fuel being around them.
Many of a fuel pump has locked up when ran the tank is ran low (fuel pump has gotten warm) and cool fuel is added.
One of the reason the pump always goes out with a full tank of fuel

    • @robertmencl9169
      @robertmencl9169 ปีที่แล้ว

Are you sthe aying that the fuel pump will suck up dirt from the bottom of the tank when you run low on gas? The pump is open, on the bottom of the tank. It sucks off the bottom of tank wether the tank is full or empty.
