Building Off Grid Log Cabin - S 2 Ep 4 / The First Roof Triangle is Up!

  • It is absolutely incredible to see the first roof triangle standing in its place, it definitely was not an easy job lifting it. When I started building the log house, this part of the build was the biggest unknown, how I'll do it without the lift or other equipment other than the tractor winch. Now that one is up, I at least know that it's possible.
    Thanks for watching!

Easier method to get subsequent triangles onto the roof: Rather than dragging the triangle's point up along the wall and dealing with the additional issue of getting over the top lip of the wall you should lay the triangle on the ground with the base (the widest part of the triangle) by the house and the point of the triangle farthest from the house. Stake something at the base points so it can't slide and then simply stand the triangle up along the wall by winching it with straps attached to the triangles point, running over the cabin.

Therapy comes in many different forms. I'm no doctor but what I can say is that watching a Japanese chef cut Wagu beef on the grill slowly and masterfully brings a feeling of internal peace. Watching sushi being sliced, listening to music, etc. To watch Nik do his thing is the best form of nature at work with logic, care, ingenuity together with a feel that instantly erases life's complications through the enjoyment of one man's quest to build something truly as a human with a minimalist attitude to give us all access into his TH-cam portal cabin building adventure. Simplicity yields more value in life only to those who understand the meaning of value. The value of the human spirit is priceless. Keep up the good work Nik.

I have no idea why I am in love with log cabin builds, but yours is the most incredible I have seen. All of the others have gaps between the logs filled with moss and cob, whereas yours you cut so perfectly that they fit snugly together, with additional wool insulation. You have my thumbs up, and admiration. I am in this for the long haul, even if it takes a whole year or more to finish. Its fascinatingly beautiful to watch and learn, it brings out the basic animal instinct for nest building, fulfilling a primal need.

Like all the rest of the people I really enjoyed to watch the old school way to build a log cabin to see how it could be done with simple tools. As I watched how you was able to lift the logs I thought how would I do it alone or with a helper? Then I remembered I have a old 1975 Hyster fork lift sitting in my back yard. It's an old case tractor that's able to lift 6000 LBS and goes nearly 25 to 30 ft high. Back in the olden days on a Saturday 25 to 50 guys would show up to a neighbors house and man handle it as you did alone or with a single helper WOW! Good Job. So glad I was able to find your finished video of the cabin Looks great

( Yes , even a caveman like me has figured that out 😎😉 ) I do wood work on the side and I have learned a lot . Thank you very much. This has been far beyond construction/ engineering. This is art . The care of the detail is excellent. The seams , the corners , the wood selection of each piece is carefully thought out art . The amazing part is it's all being done while throwing an elephant. The weight of these logs are incredible. I look forward to watching every installment. Again , I thank you very much . Journey well, Merc . 🌪⚒⚡📐📏⏳

Very difficult job raising the first roof truss with limited equipment but "where there's a will there's a way"
Fantastic job, your skill with a chainsaw is outstanding, this is definitely the best log cabin build I have seen.
Keep up the great work and thanks for your video

Really enjoy watching and all your doing is impressive beyond words. Continue as time is your best friend and your managing it well. I'm looking forward to the rest of the challenges you put in front of you Nik and prove there not challenges at all !!

The first video I watched was 'cutting in the door', I enjoyed it so much I went to the beginning and watched them all. Like you, I am about to start raising the rafters on a scribe to fit cabin that I am building with my brother for the past two years, and like you we are doing it all by ourselves, by hand and off grid. Unlike you thou we have to deal with lots of snow in the winter, this year is 75 inches/190 cm. Like you, we can't wait for that cense of accomplishment when the ridge pole is finally in place. Keep up the great work, I know how hard it can be at times.

Thank you Nik! This is super inspiring and liberating. Your silence, as you build, really allows us viewers to hear and feel the sounds of nature call us back home, while the contrast between settings (i.e. your's in nature and ours behind a computer screen), is unequivocal proof to me (and hopefully us) that what we call "progress", a.k.a. "technological progress", is everything but true progress for the human spirit, community, and humanity on as a whole. P.S. It's saddening that ~125 people couldn't find something positive from this video, yet i'll leave it at that because any additional words or effort spent on something so negative and ignorant, is energy wasted. Kudos to the 10k positive brothers and sisters out there! Enough said, and I'm moving on to the next episode, cheers mate!

Hey Nick, I really love your videos of this build. I completely appreciate the way you build from the “design in your head” and let things progress organically from there. I thought I was the only one that did that. Your dedication to this project and the way you solve the various challenges is fascinating to me. It is so freeing for the mind to not be constrained by written and drawn plans. This has inspired me to tackle my next project of building a greenhouse this summer...Thanks for the inspiration! Tom

Nik, thank you for the video. Your cabin is really starting to take shape and watching you and your friends doing it is really enjoyable. I would suggest that you consider doing the following :
For the next "A" frame (roof rafter) lay it out on the ground tables just as you did with the first "A" frame rafter and make all the cuts needed in the 3 logs but do not bolt them together. Instead, then take the "A" frame apart and pull each log individually up onto the upper floor. After you have all 3 logs pulled up onto the upper floor, then reassemble the "A" frame and bolt it together on the floor and then raise the frame as you did before. That may save a lot of time and problems that you had trying to pull the first "A" frame up already assembled.

This building will last for hundreds of years. Long after the man who built it and the thousands who watched him are dead. A testament that human thought and belief, which is converted to action, creates the world around us. That is why this is so immensely inspiring.

Some great ingenuity being displayed on how to get large heavy objects up on the house with just a winch and pulleys.
An idea: Once you get the triangle tip above the top of the house, you can use some long thin logs with a "Y" cradle on the top to push each leg into the air. This will shift your mass higher and make pulling it onto the roof easier. Also, if you oil the logs on the side that is sliding, that might ease some of the friction.
