Building Off Grid Log Cabin / Lifting The Roof Trusses

  • Over the last few weeks I've been lifting the roof trusses on to my log cabin and it's taking a bit longer than what I was expecting. As the roof is one of the most important parts of the log house I don't want to rush it and risk something to go wrong or injure myself. So far I'm more than happy to have two out of four trusses up without any bigger problems. Doing it DIY style it takes a lot longer to lift everything, but in the end the satisfaction of seeing things coming together pays all off the hard work.
    Thanks for watching!

Thirty plus years ago two of my 65 year old Uncles built a 18 x 20 log cabin using 99 popular logs and aspen for the roof trusses. The cabin sat on 9 concrete piers. The cabin sits in the Beautiful woods of Upper Peninsula Michigan.

I love what you are doing. I am in construction, probably because of my grandfather. 55 years ago, as a young boy, I helped him cut and raise a timber-frame barn. He used a "Jib Arm" like on a ship. Multiple sets of block and tackle; Manila ropes. No chain falls, no power tools, no winches. Today I am on old man, but I still impress younger workers in how to move large heavy things on a job without power equipment, and I only remember a little of what my grandfather knew. I wish I, and more of us had learned more from the generations that came before us. We push buttons, pull levers, and are in command of power, but not of the world around us. Thank You for filming your build. I hope it inspires many to work with their hands, and re-learn some of the old ways.

Hello Nik. Ever since I saw the videos Dick Proenneke made of his log cabin I have compared others to it and the methods he used. So often these newer videos fall so short of what he did with the tools he had I move on. You too are pushing the limit of what you can build with the tools you have. Thank you so much for the videos and do take care.

  • @droidian

After watching many hours of this, I was thinking that at the beginning, make a huge tri-pod from the start, right in the middle of the cabin to lift the logs. Here in America, we have huge trees that could do this. I don't understand why you used such big logs for the roof support, but it's gonna be awesome, for sure. Much respect. You're amazing with that chain saw.

After wrestling all those heavy logs all day do you ever get the urge to go out in the wild and wrestle bears and wild boars? I cannot believe you and your friend there can do this day after day, I know people built log houses for years doing it with even less mechanized machinery that you have but watching you makes me realize just what really hard work is. Congratulations on getting as far as you are now and I will keep watching every episode as I have up until this time.

I can't help but wonder, what if all the triangles were drilled measured etc on the ground and move each part to the roof as you need the piece. Build all the triangles on the roof on-top of each other. Use tractor to pull each one upright into position ready to screw it to its spot or even also attaching each one to horizontals halfway down each angle.
I've in my 60 and have no idea what I'm talking about but I just love watching. You lads definitely learned young that hard work brings rewards and a wonderful feeling of satisfaction. If only all young people had those opportunities growing up.
