These look cool, however, my band conductor says wooden mallet like TW26 shouldn’t be used on them cause the can dent the timpano’s head

That's not true. If you play the right way it's impossible to damage the head with those rounded mallets

@@_SuitedCollege percussionist currently studying timpani here. Ruben is correct. Technique is everything. The guy in the video is generating a ton of sound just using the weight of the arms, gravity, rebound, adding a little velocity with 100% relaxed shoulders, arms, and grip.
More factors than just the material of the implement are in play. If you hit the timpano like a monkey with a death grip that will definitely dent the head, especially if it’s set to the lowest tension by the pedal system. The age of the heads, (they’re almost never changed at the middle/highschool and sometimes college level) and any existing damage factor in to that.
It’s impossible to damage a timpano head with correct technique. I use Innovative Percussion’s BT8’s every day, which is a bamboo + wood ball mallet and I don’t have a mark playing 15” strokes. If the band director is that worried, they can add moleskin to a wood ball mallet to take out a lot of the attack.
      Hope this was informative 👍🏻👍🏻
