Thanks for essentially putting up this recorded lesson. Really drives home the fact that you’re a successful musician that is still trying to learn and still be better.
This is literally the best class I have ever gotten.
If I had payed 200 Euros for this as a masterclass I would have been happy, with how much it was worth it.

It's amazing how staccato and clear his sound is and he's not even dampening the head!!
I'm speculating some audio mixing happened along with extensive editing. You hear the microphone level change quite drastically when he is speaking. Mic placement, etc. But, yeah!
@@MortonLuvz2drum Well... I'm geussing they have lav's on and then separate timpani mics to record this video.
No point in using the timpani mics when speaking.

Great video which answers many questions about timpany sounds and strokes! And I want to buy , but I live in China, and steve weiss music is not avaliable in China. So sad.😥
Could you do a revuew of each snare drum/tambourine you have with sound test?? That would help us choosing them

thank you! does a composer specify dark marcato or dark staccato in the score? writing it down or using the right articuation symbol maybe?
I was thinking the same thing. I think writing "dark" along with the marcato/staccato symbol above the notes would be best. All though you want to make sure the player knows what you expect. Perhaps show him or her this video.
I would love to see a foot-cam in future videos. To see all the pedal changes.

Hi Rob, does it really matter how we grip the mallet? I mean the German , French or America style.
just like the variables that duncan mentioned, the way that you grip the mallet can vary the color and sound of your stroke. these are 9 basic stroke types, but obviously the number of colors and sounds that you can make with different grips, different playing area, and any number of other variables can alter the sound and add to your color palette.
I play the italian's tecnique
@@VFP97 I play German. More use of fingers and less wrists. Möller-technique is the key.
This is such a valuable resource. It is a treat to hear Mr. Patton speak about his technique and hear him perform.
I would find it very valuable and helpful if he could play one of the existing studies or write a new etude and play the exact same etude demonstrating how to approach that single etude 9 different ways using the 9 stroke types mentioned in the table, each one at a time through the etude. (for example: play the etude all the way through with the light staccato , then all the way through using the heavy staccato and so on.
