Holy bloody duck fuck. I heard buying stuff from Japan was tricky but that was fucking ridiculous. Major props to you for making this video for everyone. I'm way too lazy to deal with that so I'll just grab my shit at the conventions I go to.
Tbh it's not that hard once you get used to the process. It just takes a while for the item to get to you, due to the many buffers and other parties involved. But in the end, if you want to save money (and decrease the risk of buying bootlegs), it's very much worth it ^^

shipping prices have always scared me, especially when ordering from america (a small package costs like 80 bucks to get here), but this video has made me feel a little more confident, so i can try ordering stuff i’ve looked at for ages soon
Ah no need to worry about shipping prices!! As long as you don't order very heavy weighing stuff, and use a cheap shipping method you're good. I always manage to keep my parcels under the 2.5 kilo weight limit and I usually pay between 10 and 18 euro of shipping (depending on the weight)
Which isn't a lot at all considering I consolidate at least 3 items or more into a single parcel.

Stellar work as always. One thing that was left a bit unclear for me was whether or not you get tax hammered (like I always do when I order) when using proxy services though, could you tell us your experiences regarding that?

Yeah sure ^^ Well.. Like I mentioned in the video; usually you can import goods from foreign countries tax free (and import fee free), up to a certain value. This threshold varies from country to country though, but.. Generally this value lays somewhere between $20 and $25
Some proxy shopping services allow you to change the declared value of the contents of the package, while others do not. Technically this is illegal to do, hence why some services do not allow you to edit this value.
So.. As long as the value of your package is underneath that threshold, you won't have to pay extra taxes or other charges once the package arrives to your country.
So yeah, personally I always just make sure my package is valued less than the max amount you can import tax-free XD

Cool to see a fellow Dutchie use Zenmarket. It's also the company I ended up at after having used many different proxy services over several years. The first automated bidding site I used was FromJapan. It was, and is, great but did not suffice for me since I realized I wanted to buy 18+ material as well sometimes.
Thus I looked for other automatic proxy bidding sites and ended up at Noppin. They, however, at one point stopped their 'undervaluing' service', so I had to wave goodbye to that one too.
Then I found J-Subculture, the last one which I used for a long time in conjunction with FromJapan, as they were a bit more expensive iirc and had uncancellable sniper bids. They had great and helpful customer support though, really saving my ass by negotiating and then cancelling a won bid by a deceitful seller, even if it was against their company policy.
However, shortly after that, they just completely screwed over everything by, for some ungodly reason, only allowing one to add deposit to their account by literal bank transfers through some weird third party site or whatnot. Basically it was slow and only made it feasible to deposit hundreds of $ at a time. Yeah, I was not going to bother with that crap.
I then luckily found Zenmarket and they're still the only one I know of that do all 3 of the things I value the most:
1) Allowing manual undervaluing of your parcels, 2) automatic bidding, 3) allow 18+ material (yeah I know, it's a category I use sometimes).
To be honest, 3) is the reason I opted to use Zenmarket over FJ. If you don't need 18+ support, FJ is about on par with ZenMarket I'd say. One plus of FJ is that they offer very a very cheap (but slow) shipping option, 'Surface Small Packet', which ZenMarket does not. In fact I just placed a shopping order through FJ for the first time in over a year for that reason.
edit: another plus of FromJapan, is that they have an automatic deposit withdrawal system, while Zenmarket's is manual and thus takes some time.

Also, I've found out that using proxy shopping sometimes isn't possible. For example, if you want to buy Levi re-release, i think It's the best to purchase it from goodsmile company sides, since even on second hands sites is price four times higher (Levi at goodsmile company cost 5500¥ and the cheapest one on surugaya cost 18000¥) ofc the price Will get higher w goodsmile company (i think you'll pay Abt 7500¥ w shipping) and plus customs.. but ofc, even w zenmarket you won't avoid customs as well 😅

If you are shipping many doujin albums from Japan, it would be highly recommended to choose EMS option to ensure your packages in the small possibility that it gets lost in the mail
True, though SAL small packages are insured as well, but only up to 6000 yen yeah..

I managed to get Koishi (new) off of Yahoo Auctions for ¥3500 (¥4400 including service fee + domestic shipping),
and got my Satori Nenodoroid (second hand) for ¥3550 (¥3850 including service fee (dom. shipping was free)).
Depending on where you are from (e.g. U.S.) AmiAmi has no custom fees, so anyone from the US is more than welcome to order AmiAmi at their own comfort. As for Canadians or people from other nations, not so well.
I'm guessing the threshold for importing tax and duty-free items is a lot higher in America in that case. Lucky XD
Over here the maximum value for importing non-EU items tax and duty-free is 22 euros ($26).

1. I think you'd have to contact the Zenmarket customer service is you're trying to buy something from a private Japanese person. I've personally never bought any items that way though.
2. Shipping cost will depend a lot on the weight and shipping method you choose. (100 gram vs 500 grams will already make a big difference in shipping cost for example). I personally recommend using Airmail small parcel for anything under 1kg, and Surface Mail for anything over 1kg. Shipping times will take a while with the latter, but the price is very affordable.
3. Parcel measurement limitations can be found on the "how much will it cost", side tab.
4. Yes, as explained in the tutorial, if you buy something from a Japanese website through Zenmarket, you pay the regular item price + zenmarket fee + domestic shipping cost. Then later on you pay for the international shipping + import fees. Zenmarket has a lot of popular webshops integrated within their site however, so you often don't even need to visit the original webpage.
5. Proxy shopping works a lot different compared to buying things from normal webshops. As explained at the start, you're paying another company to buy things FOR you, and they in turn will then ship that item to you. Hence why there's a lot of steps involved.
Do keep in mind that there have been a couple of changes to both EU law regarding importing of non-EU merch (mainly the VAT exception no longer existing), as well as some policies on Zenmarket's end.

Oh congrats on your preorder!! No worries though, I've pre ordered some figures using Zenmarket before and they'll always sent you an email when the pre order item has arrived at their warehouse. You can then dispatch it the same way like any other item you buy using them.

How much less is a good amount to declare (for a nendoroid)? UK import taxes suckkkk. With shipping, my nendoroids cost around 4800-6000 JPY (cries) but do zenmarket add on the shipping to the total value of the package (my guess is they don't?) as this is what the uk imposes the tax on: value of goods + shipping. And if you undervalue your package, do zenmarket still write the actual value on the legal documentation? The customs charge itself isn't so bad, it's the damn postal service which bumps up the price
Nope, shipping (both domestic and international) are not calculated into the declared value.
As far as I know, only the value of your parcel's contents are listed on the documentation stuff. And yep they will be adjusted.

@@PurpleRicex Nah that's completely fine. I've never had issues with the declared value stuff, so I'd say there's no need to worry.
As for the actual value, depends on the items. Some do have price tags, some don't. But I think you can ask zenmarket to remove any other price tags/official pricing documents.

Available Shipping methods will vary from country to country. I used to use SAL small packet. But I don't think they offer that anymore. I'd say to just try using the cheaper Shipping options (they usually are restricted to a max weight of 2kg tho), unless you happen to have a very heavy item. In my experience I usually receive my items within 3 weeks after being shipped internationally. If you're planning on buying items that are over 2kg I suggest using surface mail (sea Shipping container). Though Shipping in that case will usually take about 2 to 3 months.

If you're worried the products you buy through them won't arrive at your place, don't worry. I've personally send about 12 parcels so far using their service, and all arrived in fairly reasonable time. All shipping methods come with tracking. Even if your parcel does end up getting lost, they'll refund your money (as its covered by their insurance). So believe when I say you can trust them.
If you're still skeptical though, I recommend just purchasing something cheap for your first purchase. (mine was a pokemon plushie)

Do you have the correct currency selected? When adding funds to your account using PayPal, you get the option to pick which currency you want it to be converted from. Perhaps you selected a currency you don't have in your account? Idk.
I've never experienced any trouble adding any money to my account using PayPal.

Exactly yep. Once the item has arrived at the warehouse you can let Zenmarket pack it into a parcel with address and everything.
If you wish to save on shipping costs I highly recommend shopping for some more items, so you can pack them all into 1 parcel.

Ehh I'm not quite sure. I've never done it myself. If the purchase fails they will refund the money back to your Zenmarket funds. If you want the money back in your bank account I'd suggest reaching out to their customer support.

FOX HOUND true. And I think for us it makes sense since it's import tax (meant to favour a countries' own production) for a product that doesn't get made in our countries' own borders. Companies profit of a civillian tax funded, prosperous state in that this makes people have disposable income to buy their stuff. But they dont contribute (enough) to keeping these people potential customers. On the other hand you could say these companies provide the jobs the people need to buy their stuff. But they still profit from highways, hospitals (in countries where there's free or semi-free healthcare), police and other public services. Me buying some waifus doesn't do damage to my country's economy. Yeah it would be cool if there could be exclusions on import tax when there's a case like this. This should only be for niche things since some companies (fe archonia.com) make a profit importing merchandise. A follow up question is whether the government should favour such a company when it only makes all products incredibly expensive (op should now what im talking about as a dutch person but i think most european anime merch retailers are similair in prices). Cause whats the service im getting? Customer service in my own language (but im fluent in english), less shipping time (which doesnt apply to pre-orders since those first have to ship to retailer in question which ussually causes delays). Honestly i dont understand why people would shop at archonia, unless they don't know about alternatives.
