depends on the philosophy of the manager, for exemple Guardiola wins game and titles with offence, it's called defend in attacking (when you have the ball you can't conced a goal)

The AC Milan defensive line of the late 80s early 90s, one of the most dominant teams in Europe, was insanely good.
That whole period had Legends, every position. Costacurta, Rijkaard, Baresi, Maldini, Donadoni, Van Basten and Ruud Gullit.
I saw them in 1992 in our stadium, the first champions league edition. We (PSV Eindhoven) had Romario, and we still lost 1-2.
Dont even want to talk about our semi-final in 2004, that time we didn't get what we deserved, against Milan.

We had a pretty good team at that time, under Sven-Goran Erikson, but Van Basten and Gullit were a constant nuisance with the victory goal coming from a forward run by Rijkaard with an assistance by Van Basten.
Also Luke is right Paolo Maldini was one of the best defenders ever, Italy is renowned for producing amazing defenders, guys like Franco Baresi, Alessandro Nesta, Fabio Cannavaro, in the modern era Georgio Chiellini to name just a few, there's loads of others

Gaetano Scirea is the best Italian defender ever, the guy could read defence so well Maradona said he was the guy he hated playing against, also he played in the 80s yet never got a single red card. The guy was as clean as any defender I've ever seen.

More than Jose Mourinho, Diego Simeone I think is more expert and well-organized coach when it comes to defense. He is the pep of defensive tactic.
Mourinho is kinda like Ancelotti, a pragmatic coach who will play depend on the team and situation.
AC Milan in the 90s won a Serie A title scoring only 36 goals in 34 games, so yes attack wins you games but defense wins you titles

If you want to learn about a "defensive striker" you should learn about Liverpool's Roberto Firmino and his role as a False 9. Was always Liverpools first line of defence in games. Knew when to initiate a gegenpress or to close passing lanes into the midfield which helped Liverpool pin teams into their own half. Their manager Jurgen Klopp always said that Roberto Firmino was the system that he employed because of how well he played his role.

These guys have a very smart take on the game considering they are just getting into it
Our coach would shout at us so much if you would go for a sliding tackle unnecesarily. Its either a last resort or you have to be 100% sure your tackle is gonna work. Because the thing about sliding tackles is, is that its very commital, if you miss the ball then you are just lying on the ground out of the play. And that can screw over you entire defence if 1 person slide tackled too early and now you have to defend with 1 player less for 10 seconds
I can see how that would have a huge impact on a game especially in crucial moments
I had this problem when I moved up in HS. I was killer slider as left wing back or in those days left wing midfielder tracking back...then I used it too much and in the wrong situations against better comp. That first year of varsity was a hell of a learning curve but it honestly made me better. Made me think the game more😊
Also the problem of picking up a yellow and worse case scenario a red. You get a yellow and then you're on edge for the rest of the game or you get a red and your entire team is at a disadvantage. It takes a lot of discipline to not just jump in recklessly and know when to commit or jockey
Not only that but if you miss the ball and hit the player, that is another thing to be worried about, more so if you're the last defender...
Teams essentially defend on a macro level nowadays, most high level sides expect even their attacking wide players to track back and cover their full backs - Luke is right, pretty much the only players that arent expected to help defend are the center forwards/strikers - ie Haaland etc. This is not to say that amazing tackles, last ditch defending, off the line clearances and blocks as well as pin-point slide tackles are not helpful, but I think if you look at the teams in every major league around Europe that have been the most successful, they all essentially defend from midfield onwards - high press, off the ball formation changes, destroyers in CDM like Makelele, Viera, Gatusso, Kanté etc. Again Luke is on the money with the Maldini quote for center backs "if I have to make a tackle I've already made a mistake"
People talk about Mourinho as being one of the most defensive counter attacking managers of all time, which is true but also I think he was also doing the best with certain aging squads at times. People forget his first Chelsea side was a very high scoring and dynamic attacking team also.
We all love 'rolls royce' defenders like Van Dijk, Saliba, Maldini, Nesta and Beckenbauer, but the best defenders cannot solo carry their teams to a league title (sadly why they dont seem to win the Ballon Dor also).

There is no distinct differentiation between defense and offense because the game actually is not phased into offense defense but rather:
Static Defensive
Defensive transition
Offensive transition
Controlled Offense
Some teams try to keep the game in a constant transition phase like you said with counter/gegen pressing, and because this is a fluid state between teams being in defense and offense and in the modern game this is where the majority of the game is played

For national team who play devensively and win a World Cup trophy, there's no better team than Italian national team. They're famous for their tactics called Catennacio. Some of the best defender was Italian. Paolo Maldini, Alessandro Nesta, Fabio Cannavaro, Franco Baresi, etc arguably was top 20 of defenders of all time.

14:16 the defender you're talking about is Hector Bellerin. I honestly thought he'd be one that would make it good but his career just faded into obscurity following a few injuries. I just can't believe that the current best arsenal side doesn't have Bellerin in it. He was scintillating at times.
There's actually also a clip from him earlier in the video. I think it's around the time when you're trying to figure out if it's EPL or La Liga. I think it was an arsenal v chealsea game.

You are not one of the worlds best if you get that many bookings and reds. That just shows how many times Ramos who fast for a CB was out of position and NEEDED to foul to make up for it. Ramos is one of the most red carded players in footballing history, being a greatest defenders and one of the worst disciplinary records doesnt go well together because he clearly messed to make that challenge in the first place
Hey, I wanna suggest some context to you guys' fear of getting corrected on terminology. We, your audience, were most likely brought up with football and it was a defining aspect of our youth and finding social circles. I think those corrections are therefore not meant to put you in your place or 'reprimand' you as Luke said, rather we want you guys to be fully fledged members of our community who know not to call it a "score" but instead a "scoring opportunity", something you'd hear on every broadcast.. Both you Corey and Luke seem to be genuinely interested in football's intricacies which is all you need to be taken in by the football community with open arms, although you're gonna have to endure our nagging here and there :) Again, it's because we've grown into this culture from childhood where that kind of behaviour led to someone being "educated" by your friend circle so you wouldn't embarrass yourself in the future; you're just tapping into early playground behaviour there. Italians have had the best defence tactics and the best defenders in over 60 years at this point, and even the best defenders from all over the world would have wanted to play in Italy to grow as players, or to be recognised as the best (sadly it is not 100% like this anymore...but there are still really good italian defenders and in Serie A in general).
Maldini is the pinnacle, but Baresi, Nesta (if he didn't play in the same squad as Maldini...he would probably be considered more), Materazzi, Chiellini, Bonucci, Cannavaro (one of 2 man that have ever won a balon D'Or as a defender) Scirea and many many more, were also considered the best at some point in their career.
Like, i have said this multiple times all over the internet at this point...but just watching the 2006 World Cup highlights of Cannavaro, you are going to see more defensive greatness than you would watching a lot of top tier defenders highlights (like some of the defenders shown in this video multiple times)...but of their all entire career.

It's called Total football. Everyone attacks, everyone defends. Meaning,when the attackers lose the ball they defend & when the defence wins the ball,the attack starts. A concept introduced by the Dutch i think...

It’s also because you need to over commit to do a slide tacle. So it has to be timed perfectly. If you do it wrong. It can be a penalty or a wide open shot 1v1..so sometimes being an annoyance for the striker and force him to make a mistake by being there is better than take the ball with a tacle. A tacle can be a big gamble
The problem with your perception of the game is that you are learning the game from the top players and highlights. I mean how can you appreciate anything if your first football video was from Messi. For us who grow up playing the game we can understand the unreal difficulty to become a player of that level. My advice to you is to watch smaller teams to try to understand the depth. You are seeing only the tip of the iceberg. Messi is not football. He Is the pinnacle of footballs 1 hundred years of history. Watch the Uefa champions league play off this week. You will be surprise at the level and energy of the games. Ps. Keep up the good work . we enjoy your learning journey

The entire circumference of the ball needs to cross the line. There are chips in the ball that automatically track that.

A really solid defence is one where a team completely locks down the opposing team's offence to such a degree that they generate very little to no changes. You have to watch a full game go really appreciate that, it's not something that comes across in a highlight video.
Locking down an opposing team's offence can be done in many ways with different tactics. There is not necessarily one tactic that is better than the other. Typically great teams are designed around a certain style of play, meaning players with specific abilities are transfer to the team to allow the team to play in a certain way.
Regarding sliding/flashy tackles, as one of you said, as soon as you have resort to a sliding tackle, you are at plan b/c. A sliding tackle looks great when you get the ball, but if you don't, you are on the ground and out of the play, you may also commit a faul, concede free kicks or penalties and get carded, possibly sent off. So yeah, sliding tackles are not desirable.

Its just weird as a native german speaker to hear someone use german phrases when there are perfectly fine words for it in their native language. That's got nothing to do with respect or whatever to me , its just strange and makes it harder to understand and explain to people who dont know german :D

The thing about sliding tackles is that, you usually have to chase the attacker. That consequently means that you were positioned badly as a defender
Gegen pressing teams tend to turn over posession much higher, but it's so complicated a tactic that it's pretty much only Jurgen Klopp (from whom most people learned it) that has won with it.
Jose Mourinho on the other hand plays an extremely low block (parks the bus in front of his goal) and just waits for moments of opportunity to counter. So he'll tend to win games while posessing very little of the ball.
High posession teams tend to also coutnerpress very high. Arsenal and Man city tend to pass the ball a lot in the opposition half, but when they loose it, for the first 3-5 seconds, they'll tend to press intensely (almost like a gegen press), then they'll fall back into a midblock and try to shepherd the opposition into an area where they are more likely to win the ball back efficiently.
To clarify, the ball don't need to hit the net from the inside, but it needs to pass the line fully. If even a small part of the ball is on the line or above it, there is no goal. The same rule applies to corners ect. If the whole ball didn't cross a line, the game sill goes on without interruption (unless of a foul, offside or the end of the half/match)

there are many different kind of striker, from what i heard luke could totaly be a wall striker (i dont know what they are called in english this is a literal translation from german) basicly a wall striker stands around in the center and acts as a focus point for crosses and passes, he then either shoots on goal or more often lays it off to wingers who get into the channels or even back to midfielders who might have a clean shot on goal. the term comes from a wall you can bounce balls of off :P that sounds like luke to me, specialy if this passing thing is comming along.

To play defense tactics, it needs a perfect team, timing and patience. To keep the spaces tight, fast backs, ruthless centre backs, fast forwards, above all, a goalkeeper you can depend on.
Attacking teams give space away, to get forward. But if they lose the ball, the whole team is out of position.
Attacking is much easier, but also more risky. Plus defensive plays save energy.
On the offence-defence matter: even the goalkeeper sometimes scores on corners, it just happened in Lazio vs Atletico Madrid
So yeah, everyone plays both defense and offence, for example center backs are usually tall and go in the box to try to score in case of corner kick. In the same way, some midfielders stay just out out of the box on corners to serve the double purpose of avoiding quick counterattacks and shoot from ~18 meters if they get the possibility.
Also, sliding tackles are great when it is executed properly. But a small mistake in sliding tackle, 1 small mis-step can be yellow carded or even red carded. if you're committed to a sliding tackle, you've got to get the ball. If you miss the ball, even the slightest of touch on the attacker could be called a foul and could be booked or even make a serious injury to the player which is dangerous. Also sometimes, the attacking players take advantage of that and dive, to get the defender yellow carded.
If you look at recent WC winners they all had excellent defense, even Morocco, went in the semis mainly because of they stellar defense

by the way- in a 4-3-3 there is no classical 10. In a 4-2-3-1 the 10 (creative player) is the middle position of the 3 offensive middeldielder
As a keeper, some great mantras for defense, ball or man, not both; or no shots no goals. From a more tactical perspective as keep if there is a shot coming want defender to adjust that shot as much as possible so keeper only needs to react to a portion of it

the ball has to completely go over the line, it's crazy cause the width of a grass blade can change the score back with now VAR (video assistant ref)
If you want to appreciate team defence, check out a video on how the Morocco team played during the 2022 world cup. They played an old-school style of counter attacking game that frustrated everyone. The French team of 1998, and the German team of 2014 were nice.
I would recommend looking into strategies themselves. The Italian Catenaccio comes to mind, and the art of counter-attacking coaches like Mourinho and Ancelotti (my favourite).
I would recommend looking into actual positions. The different variations of central midfielders, as they are the middle linebacker types, who run the defensive positioning and flow.
As far as players, Maldini is clearly the goat, but I would also check Roberto Carlos, who was a fantastic fullback (defensive flanker).
Hi Corey I'm just a normal football player in the lower leagues. I like your videos and I hope you make more. This side tackling is the last way to prevent a goal in my eyes. It happens a lot but it really is the last resort and it doesn't work well even if you have good examples. Because then the tactic has failed. There can be many reasons for this. The opponent was too quick, I wasn't paying attention, my team-mate wasn't paying attention. None of this is a problem, but it is a problem to avoid. Because it is the last option that you can avoid by playing cleverly. I don't want to be the smart guy here, but I've seen so many injuries because people have fallen unhappily. You don't want to hurt your opponent but sometimes it's not fun anymore. I myself had the experience of tackling an opponent and he tore his cruciate ligament. And he couldn't work for 6 months. His boss told him he wasn't allowed to play football any more. For the rest of his life. And sometimes it's not as nice as in the leagues you watch. I would say as a little thought process, you should look at smaller leagues. Especially at the bottom. How it really is. Go to the side and listen to the comments of the spectators. It's a beautiful game but it always has to be fun in my eyes.

Try to look for arrigo sacchi ac milan in the late 80s-early 90s. Thats the epitome of what luke said, turn defense to offense. They have great defense with maldini and his mentor baresi, midfield led by frank rijkaard, ancelotti and beautiful spearhead striker with van basten.

Rugby / League is the same. The whole team attacks, the whole team defends as need be.
But as others state... attack may win matches, defence wins the titles.
Played for 13 seasons (right through my mid-late schooling to age 24). Started as a defender (center), finished as a DM - my favourite position in the game. Just ahead of AMC.
The saying "offense wins you games, defense wins you titles" is kinda old saying that is so true to its time.
However, the game of football is nowhere near that black and white.
Different teams have different approaches, but it's almost certain that you should have at least "good" offensive or defensive structure.
It's how much you lean towards what you want to do, is where the fate of your team lies.
All teams that wins titles have good to great defense. And all have good to great offence. If you lean too much one way or the other, you're not going to go far either way.
That's why I don't agree with that quote. It's not true.
The game evolved so much, that a balance between the two is essential, and the way that you set up to play, is a reflection on how your coach wants to do. That's it.
Attack wins you matches, Defense wins you a league title
Mourinho played counter-attack - wich means you mainly defend in your own half and then quickly counter-attack, hence the name, giving up posession for defense - Counter-pressing is more what Barcelona and Tickitacka requires - it's constantly pestering the opposing defense with your offense, to enforce errors and gain posession. This is harder defensively because it requires more coordination between the lines and leaves room for what? Counter attacks, because there is a lot of space to gain with long passes.
Pep Guardiola said it himself how Man City were finally able to win the CL this season and he said a huge reason was he started using "proper defenders" across the entire back line who could excel in 1v1 duels against opposition wingers.
City started the CL final with essentially 4 centre backs which was an almost nonexistent approach before last season. Most teams typically play 2 CBs and 2 full backs to support the attack.
Previous City teams under Pep were arguably more scary in attack (the 2017/18 team played some of the best football you'll see), but would really struggle against teams with pacy and direct wingers like Liverpool who beat City 5-1 in the CL that season.
Defence is massive in cup competitions.
I think it was Franco Baresi, AC Milan legend and played with Maldini for a bit , who said, "the man can go past you, the ball can go past you, but the man and ball can never go past you" My apologies for the ad-libbing.
I also think, yes, there are great defenders, midfielders, attackers, but the best defense is the defenders playing as a group, same for other positions on the park. You may have the best player in the world on your team, but one player can`t carry the whole team. They need to be TEAM players to have a great team. The best player in the world won`t win a single world cup if his team is below par, however, you can win the world cup without the best player in the world if your team (and squad) as a group are together
Gegen Pressing is a "German type" of counter attack football which got adopted now by several teams outside of Germany....it is basically "ball chasing" already deep in the opponents half immediately after loosing the ball.
An early but not that aggressive form (that very aggressive pressing just started when the opponent crossed the middle line) but at that time perceived as "very extremely agressive" was already adapted under the Austrian coach "Ernst Happel" in the early 80ties exclusivly at the German club HSV who won with that back then "very unique aggressive and physical style" German Championship + European Championship ....but it wasn´t called "Gegen pressing" back then...that term came up in the 90ties when some German coaches adopted that agressive pressing style again and developed it further to become an even more aggressive pressing way beyond the middle line.
By the way the Austrian "Ernst Happel" was an very interesting fellow amongst all coaches in football history...

Where as in Europe and especially Italy, entertainment is irrelevant, it’s all about winning, so strong defensive displays are appreciated. Even winning 1-0 every week keeps the fans happy, where as in the US only 1 goal in most matches would be classed as boring and not welcomed.

Jose Mourinho Played more a low block Low press, positional based counter attack Percentages on recovering the ball in your own half and breaking but further away from the goal generally than the Gegen Press. It is a counter attack style ,but it relies on very fast wing Forwards and very powerful and quick Center forward, Where as the Gegen press relies also on speed but also more technical ability in the final third, getting most of the goals from the wing forwards and having a more technical Center Forward (sometimes False 9)
In a way they are similar but Gegen pressing requires lots of energy , Mourinhos positional low block was about burst of high energy counters, Gegen far more like a whirlwind/blitz whenever you lose the ball, so at its best its actually a possession style because the most efficient way to use it is having the ball more than the other team. It requires very well understood roles
I would say Gegen press is the ideal style for Corey. Mourinhos style is far less intense but very positionally rigid, but also very efficient, so can work with slower players in defence and defensive mid(Older?)

It is an art, an art I can never understand. To this day, I still can't figure out how slow defenders like Maldini and Cannavaro can be the some of the best defenders ever, stopping speedy attackers their whole careers. Maldini has a saying that "If you have to slide tackle, you've already lost as a defender" which to is insane. You have to be a positional genius to not tackle attackers, especially fast ones.
The ball has to completely cross the goal line in order for it to be considered a goal.

Actually there is a funny stereotype about dadlooking beerbelly having strikers who look that can barely move but when they actually get the ball they are the best ballers on the pitch :D That's the lovely irony of football the least athletic looking players tend to be very good especially in the lower leagues - smallest skinniest players and youngsters are amazing on ball, fat burly defenders know the game and anticipate so well just not to run too much, 50yo middlefielders with vision like Pirlo - you really can't judge a book by its cover in football.
