    Fun fact. Jurgen Klopp is the only manager to have a positive win rate against Pep Guardiola and its largely due to his gegenpress style of play.

    Gegenpressing started in Germany as a response to the possession based tactics that were sweeping Europe following Barcelona's tiki taka dominance.
    In the UCL Bayern and Dortmund blew Barca and Real apart in the semi-finals, shocking the world, setting up an all German final, and creating the blueprint for how to beat the possesion teams.
    It was a watershed moment for tactics in the game. Strangely enough gegenpressing and possession football compliment each other very well, which is why so many top teams employ both. I think of gegenpressing as a evolution of possession football, not the death of it like some people do.
    It's interesting that the Spanish national team, who had been unstoppable using possession football for several years suddenly lost their mojo following this tactical shift.

      Pressing hard against a side playing Tiki Taka probably seemed counter-intuitive to managers. A few like Klopp were brave enough to develop a combative high press that attacked on the counter - and were rewarded with silverware as it proved highly effective. (Like everything though, it has its weaknesses. Sides who play an organised low block can nullify much of the attacking potency the Gengen press generates.)

    You gotta have well drilled, smart, high energy players in order to properly implement a press. When a press fails it is very dangerous so many teams don't bother for x, y and z reasons. It can also be the better tactic against certain sides to sit back and allow the pressure rather than pressing them. Brighton vs west ham is a good example of this just this season. Pressing can also leave you exposed at the back with there being so much space in behind. Again, Brighton vs west ham is a great example.
    Great video as always, glad to be a part of this journey of yours.

    Newcastle vs Psg is a recent example of high pressing for most of the match. Just watch the highlight and don't hesitate to pause to see the position of the players, it's very clear and effective.

    The lesser teams who have no chance of winning because the players they are playing against have better players are the ones that park the bus to limit chances and to prevent a embassing score line, Most teams apart from Arsenal and Liverpool park the bus against Man city.

    Your modesty is appreciated. You should remember three things. From my position as a Brit, (1) lots of english football fans know little about tactics and don't care. (2) lots of them are like me and do care, and we know all the basics... but despite playing when we were younger and being massive fans who enjoy watching and thinking about tactics we still don't know the detail that well. (3) The ones who played a lot at a fairly high level, and care, or the rare ones who never played at a fairly high level but have studied hard... and they're al learning constantly as well. You are well on your way towards matching the (2)s

    As with all tactics, there is always a ying for every yang. Many teams now, will bait a press from a team - and then are able to break quickly against them as a result. If you watch a video about the recent 6-1 Aston Villa had over Brighton, you can see how a high press can be exploited.

  • @gartgreenside3657
    @gartgreenside3657 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    When you park the bus you only need to win the ball and pass it 30 yards forward and you can have beaten most of the opposition and you're attacking three vs three with half the pitch a wide open space to run into. If you park the bus but attack well it can be a great way of scoring without having to play through the entire opposition team.

    Back when I was coaching a team of students from the local university (it was really from the pub by the uni but the players were all students) a few years back, the gaffer asked me (one of the lecturers was the boss, I only got the coaching role because Andy, the lecturer, was an old friend) to try and get the lads to do a type of gegenpress, we used to train 3 times a week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights) it wasn't as sharp as Klopp's by any means(we weren't professionals, only amateurs) its a fun tactic to try

    Greetings from The Netherlands! I favor high press also (I'm Dutch) but it can only be done with very fit and high quality players. Teams who are not so good often try to 'park the bus'. It's frustrating for the other much better team but it can work if a counterattack from the lesser team results in a goal. Most of the time this parking the bus bus will lead to a defeat to the lesser team or a draw. When the lesser team gets a draw, they celebrate it as a victory. Teams in risk of relegation often use to park the bus because every point counts for them.

    You'll be amazed about how dangerous were the teams that used efficiently the long balls..jumping the centerfield, with swift strikers on the edge of offside. You couldn't afford mistakes.

    Just like football, defense is about masking or hiding the soft spots (space in soccer terms) and make decision makers hesitate. In football quarterbacks use pre/post snap reads to find and target these soft spots while soccer forces all players to find space and go to it. Once you are able to consistently "find space", soccer becomes so much more enjoyable both as a spectator and playing it.

    Fun fact a lot of sports do end up being directly influenced by each other, its past just being similar. Golden states iconic passing the ball is directly inspired by barcelona Tiki-Taka. There's always some european guy or player that tries to bring these tactics to these american sports just look at spurs

    Ur right on what u say about beating the press why some times u see the ball getting passed around the back but it’s because they r waiting for that perfect pass into midfield where the other team can be caught napping and leaving one person free

    High pressing often forces mistakes that lead to goals, as many teams have been instructed to always play out from the back.
    Often, the goalie just needs to hoof the ball upfield.

    Newcastle, Brighton and Manchester United have had some of the most effective high presses this season. Newcastle especially are brilliant at interceptions from pressing traps and it makes for a big cornerstone of their tactics. United have had the most ball winning actions in final third for a lot of the season they just cant score from them lol

    As a european (danish) the tactics are
    second nature... So when my much better half and I sit down and watch footie in 6 hours time our only discussion is "he's in quarantine - why didn't we start in a 4-4-2?" Because we have so and so on the bench... But it's ok - I'm over my passive agressive anger - I'll survive with a 4-3-3.... Go FCK ⚪🔵

      The long pass can be deadly in transition, especially if your forwards are fast and the opposing team's defensive line is high. Your forwards can outpace the (usually slower) defenders, and you can end up in a 4v2 or 3v1 situation (see Rennes vs PSG - 2023).
      To answer your question, it depends on the quality of your team and the phase/situation of game, but if you're playing against a heavyweight like Man City or Bayern, this is the default and therefore safest option with a low block. Especially if your striker is strong, i.e. can beat defenders in a physical duel - West Ham's Antonio or Roma's Lukaku are good examples (see West Ham vs Brighton 2023).
      Bear in mind that in Football, a team may adopt several different style over the course of a match, depending on the result or the effectiveness of its starting tactics. Certain styles of play become predictable, and managers sometimes need to adjust and adapt their tactics to create more chances of scoring goals or preventing the opp to score goals. @@CoreyMcKinneyFC

      I think it was a tough matchup against a very good West Ham team. I'm glad we tied it up, and I'm so pleased with Isak's performance. I have to be careful with those games because my videos keep getting blocked. I will certainly try my hardest to get as many as possible out through the season, even if it means no gameplay included and just my thoughts on the game

  • @jacksmith4460
    @jacksmith4460 ปีที่แล้ว

    14:26 what he says here I think is not exactly correct the most effective pass out of this press is to the Right back , a leading pass that the right back (black markers) runs onto and this is in fact how Liverpool have managed to beat Man City in the past as well as some other teams. Liverpool play very advanced Fullbacks/wing backs and its partly for this reason as there is a lot of space in front of the right back (or left back if the ball is with the other Centre back.
    This video is from a couple seasons ago so both Man City and Liverpool play variations on these tactics now and with slightly different shapes in possession

  • @darrenfearon4288
    @darrenfearon4288 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not every team can beat the press, only highly skiful players in top teams can beat the press, That is the reason why lesser teams either play counter attack or park the bus if they are really limited.

      It's not about having the best team. It's about making them one. No one has done this before so please do not downplay such legacies in a very naive manner. Barcelona team wasn't the greatest before he came, Busquets was an academy player and Messi was just starting. It didn't become the best outta nowhere, it was due to Pep's ideology and great football. After him, we have always struggled. Pep makes a team great. People say money and all that but United and Chelsea spent such money, and are nowhere.
