It reminds us that anyone can die at any moment, and it brings a lot more realism and weight to the story.

My ranking: 4) Yularen. Yularen wasn’t really skilled. He isn’t really good at finding good strategys, following the Jedi most of the time and making countless mistakes. His problem is that he can’t adapt himself to different situations. But he is still a good military leader for the empire. 3) Ackbar. Ackbar is following his superiors most of the time. But the decision that he makes and his capability to survive in horrible situations (Like at the Battle of Endor) is truly remarkable. 2) Trench. Trench is a really good leader. His capability to fight (and win) against difficult situations (like a stealth ship attacking) is remarkable, and his effective tactics can be feared. Effectiveness, brutality, rapidity. However, his default is that he is too arrogant and underestimate his enemies too much. 1) Thrawn. I think it’s useless to tell you why he is first, you already know.
Clone Trooper Let’s be fair that was due to the Mcguffens known as The Force and some random space whales that can somehow go into hyperspace while making engine noises. This was not a defeat worthy of being Thrawn’s end.
Thrawn is by far the best commander so long as we’re going by the EU (and even with Didney Canon he’s still a damn fine strategist). Ukio was a juggernaut of fortifications and my bluegga took it with optical illusions and some art pieces.
At the Imperial Academy, his superiors considered him better suited for a career on a ship's bridge but all he wanted was to fly. He proved at the command of Mon Remonda (in Solo Command novel) that they were not completely wrong.
Same pal...except I kept going and stopped at 125 attempts...I counted, and was planning to go to 175 but decided to stop...that's like 4 months I kept asking, and would have been 5 and a half cause I asked once per day, plus extra times that I didn't count...I think I have a problem😂
Same for Trench. It's near unfair to put Thrawn in here, so I basically voted for "besides Thrawn, who's the best admiral" lol I know that's a bit against the point, but we ALL know Thrawn is overall just the best.
My favorite character(of the admirals): Trench The best admiral: Thrawn I’ve always like Trench because he looks cool, is a good general, and I’m slightly biased towards separatists and the republic because they had the coolest infantry imo(clones and droids respectively). However, Thrawn is a close 2nd for my favorite character just because of how cunning and intelligent he is. He is a true leader
In a battle to the death, not even close. In the position of leading armies against the other, I agree it'd be close. Grievous specializes in ambush tactics that even Jedi had trouble dealing with, and Thrawn's specialty is turning his enemy's strengths into weaknesses. Grievous' early history would be difficult for Thrawn to get ahold of, but if he figured it out he'd play him like chiss harp.
Honestly it depends on how much resources each side has. Depends on when we’re putting them against one another . If Legends Grievous is at the beginning of TCW, and Thrawn is at the beginning of the Thrawn Trilogy, then hands down Thrawn wipes the floor with Grievous. But the end of TCW Grievous with an entire fleet backing him? Even Thrawn would have a tough time I feel
@@ShadyOakMinistries I meant it in the sense of leading armies of course, Thrawn isn't a physical fighter. I think Grievous's aggressive yet clever tactics would give Thrawn more of a run for his money as opposed to desperate Rebel guerillas, but I'm sure he could at a certain point see what makes Grievous click as well. Especially if he has gotten to study Kaleesh culture and their art of war.
Legends Grievous is more of a land general and hes great but hes also a fairly good Admiral. I give Thrawn the naval advantage but you cant put legends Grievous vs Thrawn in a land battle anyway Thrawn is purely an admiral.
Yularen was younger and less experienced than anyone else on this list so for once you said something that made sense. Of course, it can be argued that Ackbar achieved more than Thrawn but bringing the New Republic to its knees with 9 Imperial-class Star Destroyers is hard to beat
Imagine what he could have done if he had more power than Tarkin, the ability to go through with his Tie Defender project instead of the stupid deathstar. He wouldn't have been cocky or relied on fear, but he would have sent a stronger message by outskilling and outthinking anyone who tried. Also the ffact that he doesnt kill logical, order following officers like Captain Needa or whatever who got killed for letting Solo escape when he didn't do anything wrong. Kill people like Admiral Konstantine in rebels would've made sense though. I'd love to be a captain in Thrawns fleet because i'd learn so much.
@@Masa6x dude the only reason that thrawn works with the empire is because of Anakin Skywalker and thrawn became great friends before Darth Vader was a thing
Great points and I like how you stuck to EU Thrawn, rather than the new canon Thrawn who's a little bit softer and underplayed by the Star Wars Rebels team who I believe, didn't know how to write him properly. Timothy Zahn's new novel however shows that Yularen held Thrawn in very high regard and even helped him eventually achieve the position of Grand Admiral. Thrawn is shown as more than just a tactical genius but also as something of a super sleuth. By studying old clone wars tech and identifying doonium as a key component in the super secret Death Star project, Thrawn basically pieces it all together on his own, and even confronts the Emperor about it face to face. He's on a whole other level and despite his questionable fate at the end of Rebels, I'm glad he's still alive and part of the new canon. Definitely the best military leader in this universe. I was curious as to who you think are the other five most intelligent people in star wars?
The feeling I got from the Thrawn trilogy was that Zahn started from the writing prompt: "What if Sherlock Holmes was an Imperial admiral?" Being an expert sleuth is the central aspect of his character, which fuels his other tactical skills. A lot of adaptations of him miss that, I think. The other thing is that he's also not quite as godlike as generally thought by fans, he made quite a few mistakes, including placing far too much reliance on an obviously compromised agent (Niles Ferrier) who had failed him many times before.
I think rebels thrown would still win this contest. Even with plot armour demand he lose often, he didn’t ever feel like he properly lost. With things like the bendu and pergil, they were unpredictable and unreactable. Every other ‘defeat’ was usually the rebels escaping, thrawn being called away by something bigger, or small bases he didn’t personally command.
wow so sorry I couldn't like and binge your vids the last few days Eckharts, went on an outing. But still, notif squad and ive been waiting for this vid for so long! Good job
Good stuff. I’m reading the Thrawn trilogy right now because of how much you praise it; I’m surprised I missed it. If you don’t mind, I have a vid request: MCRN Donnager-class battleship vs either a UNSC Halberd-class heavy destroyer or UNSC Autumn-refit Halcyon-class, whichever you feel would make a closer/more interesting matchup.
Halo is just too advanced, The expanse is really realistic(at least earlier in the series) with all the techs being realistically possible while Halo has alot more tech thats less realistic and more powerful. Also ship size is a major thing, the Donnager is just slightly larger a halberd, and is dwarfed by a Halcyon.
I think you underestimate the Expanse-or rather overestimate the UNSC. Most of the really crazy stuff in Halo comes from the Covenant and Forerunners. Aside from artificial gravity and advanced AI, both sides operate on the same ideas: heavy armor, speed, and the same core weapons of missiles, mass-drivers, and point-defense; PD in the Expanse is actually good enough that the idea of “starfighters,” is bogus. Both sides fire in heavy volleys to overwhelm PDC and both have access to nuclear warheads. I would argue that in ways, Donnager makes up differences: she doesn’t have an AI, but her rails are on turrets and fire far faster, for example. The Expanse and pre- and mid-war UNSC are a better fight than you think.
I am not overestimating the UNSC, I have numerous feats to compare and the UNSC always comes out on top. First off, ship speed - Prewar ships were capable of making it from the edge of a solar system to a inner planet it mere hours with sublight engines(This was likely a smaller system though, but still the distance from the belt or jupiter to mars or earth), this means that the halo has much more powerful reactors and engines. Onto railguns, the UNSC used their Magnetic accelerator cannon(MAC) as their primary weapon, it accelarated an object to extremely high speeds(above 1000km/s), imparting so much energy that the ship had to burn it's engines to compensate for the momentum. Hits were known to completly destroy a non-shielded ship, and with ships with shields they were known to knock them off course. They also used smaller faster firing railguns for Point defense. The only advantage I see for the expanse is their torpedoes, which can easily be taken out by PD. A single hit from the mac will completely destroy the donnager, even if it's a glancing blow. I love both the expanse and Halo but Halo tech is just far more powerful due to it not being constrained by realism, while the expanse is.
9:48 okay, I will give the Thrawn trilogy a good read. Not kidding, btw. Just gotta finish the RepCom novels, Bounty Hunter trilogy, and Legacy of the Force books first...might take some time, so don't get impatient😁
And after your done the EU Thrawn trilogy, I’d also suggest the new Canon trilogy. In some ways the new Thrawn trilogy is better than the old because we get to see the story from his side, even sometimes from in Thrawn’s head. In the EU trilogy it always felt like we were on the outside looking in at Thrawn’s brilliance.
@@speed150mph I didn't know there was a 3rd canon book on Thrawn. I've read the first two and they were great. When did the 3rd book get published and what's its title?
One of the best things about Thrawn and Ackbar is their ability to utilize the officers and ideas around them. Both Ackbar listening to Lando at Endor and Thrawn promoting Rejlii Mithel (the tractor beam officer in "The Last Command") show that they don't just command through strength and ability, they lead with humility, unafraid of other people having ideas that might very well help win the day, and in Thrawn's case, rewarding ingenuity and initiative, even if they don't always lead to immediate success. Summed up by one of my favorite Thrawn quotes - "You served too long under Lord Vader, Captain. I have no qualms about accepting a useful idea merely because it wasn't my own." (I do love the little dig at Vader there, especially since he's not around to hear it)
Its more like plot that Didn't favor him, the chances of him having a call for his gamble is higher than his enemies. Although I would understand why ot happened to him...
Seriously, I agree that Trench does deserve third place, but I gotta give some respect. That dude was outplayed by Anakin and instead of running like a coward or blaming his droid crew, he tried to analyze a solution and then ultimately decided to accept his fate.
Also Trench was responsible for Order 66 working! If he didn't analyze the battlefield when Tup fired the Jedi General, the Republic would've probably did the necessary researches without the separatists knowing and they would've probably discovered the inihibitor chip inside the clones' head, avoiding the mass Jedi genocide that happened in Revenge of the Sith. Chancellor Palpatine would've surely tried his best to cover the secret, but he would've still lost much more precious time if he didn't get immediately informed by Dooku who was informed by Trench. So yeah, in the long run you might say Admiral Trench was partially responsible for the fall of the Jedi Order and the Republic
Thrawn, without question. All the others we either half competent and/or had help from Jedi or extraordinary/special characters in the SW universe. Thrawn essentially did what the Rebels did, with no Jedi. And he did it so masterfully. These new SW movies are a tragedy. I'd they had done them properly and about the Heir to the Empire trilogy, it would have easily surpassed any of the previous movies/trilogies.
TESI303 I wouldn’t be too concerned. There is still time. Timothy Zahn with his new Thrawn novel trilogy, and Dave Filoni with the Star Wars Rebels cartoon have set it up perfectly for a Return of Thrawn in the future. With the introduction of a new grave threat to the universe (the Grisks) we could even have Thrawn on our side instead of being the villain to be slain
@@speed150mph I would not want to see Thrawn side with the Rebels. The Galactic Empire, under the new military command is different to that of Palpatine.
It’s a good idea, but there aren’t many options for ground commanders, at least ones who have feats to speak of. I can think of Veers for the Empire and Grievous for the CIS, but I can’t think of anyone else off the top of my head.
Possibly anakin, well maybe not outsmart but I think Anakin could surprise thrawn simply because of his insane rediculous tactics thrawn would likely know Anakin is gonna pull something crazy but I don't think hed predict exactly what

And yet Ackbar was killed like a piece of trash in the last movie, and the rebel 'leaders' looked like they were dressed for a cocktail party and worrying about 'running out of fuel' in space which has zero resistance and then Leia literally does a Superman through space. That movie did massive damage to Star Wars.
Michima it’s all about that acceleration, the first order would’ve been able to see overtake the resistance. That’s why fuel is still important, other than that I agree

With the release of the bad batch arc, I think trench was the most powerful for his time only because he knew exactly what the Jedi would do thanks to Echo as 'the algorithm'.
Legends Thrawn >>> Shitty Disney Canon Thrawn. In Legends Thrawn was literally Omniscient and could not be defeated except if he was killed by his bodyguard. In Disney Canon, Thrawn was stupid and his plans always failed and he was killed by an Octopus monster.
Why dont you read this Lockjaw and see if Thrawn lost this battle. starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Battle_of_Atollon And Thrawn dose not understand the force as you know full well so it isnt stupid that he lost.

Thrawn was able to figure out that Darth Vader was Anakin Skywalker just by observing how Vader flew, because Thrawn met Skywalker during the clone wars.
Grievous is tactically minded (he is the supreme commander of the seperatist armed forces afterall) bit his title is "general" and he commands ground forces as well as those in space, which I think puts him outside the scope of the video (I'm guessing).
Grevious classifies as "Supreme Commander of the CIS Military", which is a mouth full to say, so he's called a General, much like Hux, now that I think about it, minus the crippling insanity and Governor Pryce levels of stupidity.

Thrawn is by far the best commander so long as we’re going by the EU (and even with Didney Canon he’s still a damn fine strategist). Ukio was a juggernaut of fortifications and my bluegga took it with optical illusions and some art pieces.
Thrawn. Seems to be undisputed. Considering before I clicked the episode, He's the first name that comes to mind.
Honorable mentions : High Admiral Zsinj, General Solo, General Antilles, General A'baht, High Admiral Teradoc, General Bel Iblis, Warmaster Nas Choka
Mithrawnuruodo general kenobi
General Solo? Not to pick holes or anything, but I reckon I'd see him as a pilot over an admiral.
At the Imperial Academy, his superiors considered him better suited for a career on a ship's bridge but all he wanted was to fly. He proved at the command of Mon Remonda (in Solo Command novel) that they were not completely wrong.
Grevious
Greivous was more of a warrior imo, with his droids he just sent them forwad due to their zerg rush style and numbers, he wasn't that strategical.

Same for Trench. It's near unfair to put Thrawn in here, so I basically voted for "besides Thrawn, who's the best admiral" lol
I know that's a bit against the point, but we ALL know Thrawn is overall just the best.
You didn't need to make this video. We all know that I am the best Admiral.

My favorite character(of the admirals): Trench
The best admiral: Thrawn
I’ve always like Trench because he looks cool, is a good general, and I’m slightly biased towards separatists and the republic because they had the coolest infantry imo(clones and droids respectively). However, Thrawn is a close 2nd for my favorite character just because of how cunning and intelligent he is. He is a true leader
Agreed!!!
You know, Legends Grievous VS Thrawn would be interesting.
Though I believe Thrawn would succeed in the end.
I think the main problem with grievous is that he had really shitty troops (droids) if he had a competent army he would’ve been a bigger threat
Jonas Hemmingsson Imagine what HE could have done with MORE than just 9...

0:04 Confused Mon Travolta, center screen - he's the one who prompted Ackbar to yell "IT'S A TRAP!"
OK, now this is his official name for me.
Does legends count?
The feeling I got from the Thrawn trilogy was that Zahn started from the writing prompt: "What if Sherlock Holmes was an Imperial admiral?" Being an expert sleuth is the central aspect of his character, which fuels his other tactical skills. A lot of adaptations of him miss that, I think.
The other thing is that he's also not quite as godlike as generally thought by fans, he made quite a few mistakes, including placing far too much reliance on an obviously compromised agent (Niles Ferrier) who had failed him many times before.
rebels thrawn sucks
I think rebels thrown would still win this contest. Even with plot armour demand he lose often, he didn’t ever feel like he properly lost. With things like the bendu and pergil, they were unpredictable and unreactable. Every other ‘defeat’ was usually the rebels escaping, thrawn being called away by something bigger, or small bases he didn’t personally command.
It's funny you say that, because Timothy Zahn was on the writing team to help with Thrawn's entire character including lines
You should've added Admiral Holdo or General Hux as a Joke. Just to show how far down the list they should be placed.
Ivan Filipovic doesn’t make him any less of a dumbass
Hux is a general not an admiral.
For the price of a cup of coffee, you can end General Hux abuse today.
Hux was actually really smart, it’s not his fault he was forced to fight characters with plot armour
Also, Holdo gets hate, but she was hardly incompetent. It’s just _The Last Jedi_ portrayed her as a b*tch

Good stuff. I’m reading the Thrawn trilogy right now because of how much you praise it; I’m surprised I missed it. If you don’t mind, I have a vid request:
MCRN Donnager-class battleship vs either a UNSC Halberd-class heavy destroyer or UNSC Autumn-refit Halcyon-class, whichever you feel would make a closer/more interesting matchup.
Here’s one better: UNSC infinity vs an executor class star destroyer
Have to give it to Thrawn.

He is the main reason I'd be convinced to join the Empire. To hell with Palpatine and his man-child Vader. Those two can jerk each other off.

One of the best if not the best of the eu
Eck convinced me too. I’ll be checking it out as soon as I get the chance.

Eckhartsladder: talks about admiral ackbar, doesn’t mention “it’s a trap”
😢😢
This is what I’ve asked for! Thanks!
I have no qualms about accepting a useful idea merely because it wasn't my own." (I do love the little dig at Vader there, especially since he's not around to hear it)
1:54 I think Admiral Yularen did an *admirable* job 😂

I don't like Trench's species, because they look like spiders.
First they introduce a species based on one of my favorite animals, then they never use that species again, thanks Disney
Trench is amazing. Even though he isn't the best he's still an amazing admiral. It's like he's got nine lives.
I admire “Grand Admiral Thrawn” than any other admiral in the “Star Wars”.
Agreed
Can you do a top 5 smartest beings in the Star Wars franchise?
Thrawn, without question. All the others we either half competent and/or had help from Jedi or extraordinary/special characters in the SW universe. Thrawn essentially did what the Rebels did, with no Jedi. And he did it so masterfully. These new SW movies are a tragedy. I'd they had done them properly and about the Heir to the Empire trilogy, it would have easily surpassed any of the previous movies/trilogies.
He had help for a time from C'Baoth's clone who used the force on several occasions to enhance Thrawn's fleet in several battles.

My rankings:
Thrawn,

Though Trench and Ackbar could swap.
I think Yularen is better than Ackbar

there is something I do not understand why trench and not grievous?
cuz Trench is more a tactician than Grievous
Also because grievous is a general :P
Grievous is tactically minded (he is the supreme commander of the seperatist armed forces afterall) bit his title is "general" and he commands ground forces as well as those in space, which I think puts him outside the scope of the video (I'm guessing).
Because this video is for Admirals, which Grievous is not.
Grevious classifies as "Supreme Commander of the CIS Military", which is a mouth full to say, so he's called a General, much like Hux, now that I think about it, minus the crippling insanity and Governor Pryce levels of stupidity.
I really like these videos and they’re great to listen to while playing Battlefront 2
Clearly it is admiral Holdo, the best admiral to ever exist. She even won that battle where everyone was like "oh wow she's the greatest."
