Making Big Pike Spinning lures with biodegradable plastic blades

  • I do not use spinners a lot these days, the only reason for that is I kind of got caught up in making other lures but it is always great to revisit something and put a new spin on it (sorry could not resist that). I started making this lure using a cut down metal teaspoon for blade but it was just too heavy to get the thing spinning. Having recently been messing with polymorpth a low melt plastic I though I would see if I could use it to make a blade and I was surprised really how easy it was and how well it worked. The lightness meant the blade went into a spin easily and maintained at slow retrieve speeds. Fishing it was also great fun, I managed to do well on both my testing trips picking a number pike who all seamed to follow the lure right into the shallows before banging it.
    Polymorph can be bought cheaply from amazon or on ebay, just google it, thanks.

      it is not the easiest thing to sculpt it is a bit like chewing gum, but with a mould it works a little better

    Slick idea! I like the use of the cue tip tube! This would make a great Muskie lure here in the states.

    Hola Paul.... Greetings from Peru.... as usual, your work was just amazing... I enjoyed watching it a lot... it was plenty of tips. Those plastic pellets are incredible. They are very versatile. I liked your marble effect. Thanks for sharing.

    • @PaulAdamsTheHandmadeFisherman
      @PaulAdamsTheHandmadeFisherman  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      i did the marble thing because it is very hard to make geometric patterns

      But they were and looked great!!! I liked them a lot... You know, recently I read an article in the plane about an angler in New Zealand. He add little spoons (made from metal and plastic, like your marble ones) to all his minnow lures. He said that is a fatal attraction to fish. the article include some pictures of his captures, and they were awesome. I am thinking to try them with my lures. I will see if I can get some of these pellets in Amazon. Do you know if there are transparent ones?
      Before to say goodbye, whenever you can, give a look to my new Attila Veneno Concept ...I would like to know if you have a recommendation to improve it. Thanks for your time and for sharing your experience.

      I caught a few pike and did better than expected, but managed to have one of those days were I seemed to have lost the ability to use a camera. While landing one fish I managed to video a nice stand of reeds with the fish and me out of shot. Never mind, it did not spoil a good day's fishing, thanks

    For anyone else who is cheap like me, the plastic can be just some simple HDPE. Use bottle caps and a toaster oven or something to melt it, wear some leather gloves and put parchment around the spoon.

      The Handmade Fisherman I actually just made a little crankbait for some of the small bass in the pond by my house using some. Little cold now, but I'll try it out in the summer along with some balsa lures. HDPE is actually great because it floats perfectly. Just a bit less buoyant than a wooden lure. It also has that extra weight that makes it easy to level out. Mine needed no extra weights. HDPE is also great for bill making. That's the material I use for my balsa lure bills. Works like wood and very easy to fix any air pockets due to its low melting point.

    I tried making a spinner from pieces cut out of a discarded plastic safety helmet, (they have lots of built in concave shapes to them) BUT they wouldnt actually spin when I tried doing a test. The clovis's were running smooth, so couldnt work out why, possibly the blades was too thick or too big?

  • @BUSHCRAPPING
    @BUSHCRAPPING 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    why do you want it to be biodegradable?
    if you lose it their i plenty of other metal in the spinner also i thought the silver flash of the spoon was the best attractant?

    • @BUSHCRAPPING
      @BUSHCRAPPING 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      looked really professional though

    • @PaulAdamsTheHandmadeFisherman
      @PaulAdamsTheHandmadeFisherman  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did not want it to be biodegradable , it is just what the material is, what i found with metal blades is they need more speed to get going and to run, the plastic with the flat back acts more like a wing and requires less effort to get going and to maintain it. I have added flash or silver to the blades using a few different methods but to honest it is one of those things which hard to judge whether I catch more fish with the silver blade or without. I am not trying make a rules but experiment

    • @liloiul
      @liloiul 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      On spinners is the blade spinning that is the attractant mate. Fishes, and more than this predators fish are using the water waves more than eyes and scent, for them the water waves are like sound for us. That's why spinners are sort of universal lures, they work any time of the year because you can use them at, both, high and low speed (summer/winter). Won't go into the why bit to much, as in the environment and so, just a short info: normal plastic will last at least 200 years, think about the impact on water quality ;)

    inspiratif, i try make one with colorado blade but blade can not spin...why

    • @liloiul
      @liloiul 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try modify the blade, another shape or size, etc... Might be that the blade is to heavy as Paul said in the video description. Try to play a a bit with this and would be great if you come back and tell us what was wrong.

  • @MorrisOutdoors98

    do those wire clevis you make hold up well to repeated casts with a heavy blade?

    • @PaulAdamsTheHandmadeFisherman

      The Handmade Fisherman I'll be using premade brass blades, I'm making musky and pike spinners for myself and a few friends. Just wanted to know, I thought about buying clevis. But they're expensive

I really love just good ole nature sounds, or similar to Solitudes. I know you have to watch for infringements. Thanks mate, for your hard work. It is greatly appreciated. Regards, Cam.
