Can someone please tell me HOW did the gunman actually get inside the school in the first place??? Most schools are locked and secured and have to be bypassed to get in.
I get they’re aren’t any officers, but doors are usually locked and you have to speak to someone via intercom before getting in, stating who you are, why you’re there and who you’re trying to see.
This 18 year old would've found another way to terrorize had he not had guns. It might have been a different day, different kids, different institution, but he had mass murderous intent and would've found a way to do it. As a teacher, I don't want any person bent on terrorizing my babies having access to my hall--whether the instrument of terror is a gun, machete, pipe bomb or some other diy makeshift device. We need heavy duty doors on our hallways that only vetted people have clearance to get through. As of now, most schools have an air phone system in place which prompts the secretary to unlock the door from her desk. A disgruntled family member or community member with a seemingly legitimate reason to enter, can bolt down a hallway and wreck havoc in our classrooms before someone can stop them. Gun control is a legitimate societal need. But pretending the SOURCE of mass shootings is not mental illness is naive at best, disingenuous at worst. Ensuring our students are fully protected from an assailant with any malintent must be addressed as well.
