Our children gave us the game for Christmas. We live on two and a half acres of land. Half of our land is woods and half of our land is a wildflower prairie area. We have so many birds visit our land each day. Our kids can't call us without us interrupting their call to tell them about a bird that we have observed. It drives them crazy. The game is beautiful. We are excited to play it. Thank you Elizabeth Hargrave.
A neighbor gifted us Wingspan for the holidays from a bird store in California. We live in NJ. Not really a gamer but looking forward to playing. I watched the tutorial all the way through. Such a plus to have the designer take us through first steps slowly without rushing through. Thoughtful presentation and clear as well. Thanks again for the patient presentation.
Wonderful Video. Helpful to have a male and female explanation touch in there. We saw the game in Rainbow Resource's homeschool catalog and then was gifted it for a birthday. Looking forward to playing but were a little intimidated upon first setup. This video helped A LOT. Thank you!
We received Wingspan from our son for Christmas. We found it difficult to figure out until our nephew came for a visit and taught us the game. It’s going to be a favorite game in our house. Thanks for the great video.
We bought the game for Christmas. We really appreciated this video to help us learn how to get started and play the game. Especially liked the involvement of the game designer. The presentation was comprehensive.
I bought this game because I love board games. My daughter got one for Christmas and she wouldn’t let me try it out before she played herself and I just couldn’t wait so bought my own. I’m over 60 and joined a board game group four years ago and am now addicted. This game is really beautiful and since I live on a ravine and bird watch everyday it’s wonderful. The art is sublime.
Saw a article online just a few weeks ago. Looked like a fun and educational game with birds that my wife loves. This video is perfect for 1st time users like us to help grasp the game. Now we are moving through the lands !! Great intro video !!
So cool to see a How To along with the designer of the game! And great video as always :) Wingspan was a great surprise for me. When I first heard of it I didnt think it would really grab me, but the gameplay is really fantastic.
Thanks! We have another one coming with the designers of escape from dulce! Hoping to do more in this style if I can get people to visit :) I adore this game!
I'm a birder who got the game from a friend who loves it. She loves it so much she wants to play it on Zoom with me. So I have to get cracking. I feel much more confident about getting started now that I've seen your video. Thanks!
I love how chill Elizabeth Hargrave is in this explanation and yet everything is well explained and very clear and easy to understand. What a nice and relaxing video. Thank you both for this. :)
Love this game and I love that we got to hear about the game from Hargrave. I bought it for my mom on her birthday and was planning to teach my parents how to play a couple weeks later while we were all on vacation. The virus canceled those plans so I bought a copy for myself and have taught my parents how to play over Zoom. Each side plays with their own deck and bird marketplace and I keep a camera on just one bird feeder. One side draws random round goals and the other side then matches them so that everyone can easily reference them. Both sides mark end of round goals at the end of each round. If anyone draws a bird from the marketplace, the marketplace on the other side of Zoom must replace the card in that position. If you don't follow that rule the birds become stale very fast. You also get to experience the pain of missing out on a card you really wanted. We also play with a house rule that any time you play a bird on your board you must read aloud the name of the bird and the trivia located at the bottom. Anyone else playing over the internet?
Sorry to be so off topic but does anyone know a trick to get back into an instagram account? I stupidly forgot the login password. I would love any assistance you can offer me

I am a hard core gamer and my wife is a member of the Audubon Society, so I will definitely be playing this game tomorrow (Mothers Day) with her and my two daughters. I first saw the game on GameNight and immediately felt it was worthy of Game of the Year. Thank you, Elizabeth for making me and my wife happy with this wonderful game.
I just got this game for Christmas and was so excited for it!!! This tutorial helped a lot in understanding the rules, and as a bonus, was also a lovely video to watch! Thanks a lot!
Thank you so much for the video. Got this as a gift and am having a blast learning about it. This is my first time on the channel, love the way the host handles the flow of everything. Well done!
That was a great way to get us started. I got the game from my husband for Christmas because I love birds and he heard about it on TBTL podcast. We got overwhelmed yesterday as we set it up and tried to play, so we came online to find some help. This was a great little video to watch--loved listening and watching you two. We are going to try to play now. Wish us luck
I heard a review of Wingspan on NPR when I was Christmas shopping. My wife and I are opportunistic birdwatchers, that is we like to see them when they show up. I had no idea about engine building games, but we have played this almost every day since we open the box, and especially since we have been in lockdown. Learning something new each time! Fun to see Elizabeth. Thanks for a great game & helpful video.
Got this lovely game for my birthday and we boldly went in, not using the 'new player' set. So now I guess I can just add those 'starter' birds to the rest. Nice to see a game designer explain their own game.
just getting around to getting this game to the table after gifting it to my wife (a non gamer) for her birthday. I found it (the video) to be well done & the fact that it introduced the "first play" materials included in the game was very helpful. Thank you!
Thanks - it was great to meet the designer! Our young adult daughter gave us the game for Christmas 2020. She has been playing the online version and loves it. We are a board game family - yet also love the theme of birds and nature!
Great video! I heard about this game on one of my favorite podcasts (Short Wave) and thought it sounded so fun-I love birds. My boyfriend is a huge board game fan and it just so happens that he already owned this game! Can’t wait to play!
It was excellent to hear from the designer as we played the game for the first time last night and I watched another video on how to play just now and you all better explained one of the rules that we missed when playing and that other how to video didn't explain either!
Great video, thank you for filming it. Very good video quality, audio quality and conversation between the two of you. Can't understand that you don't have more subs.
This really helped a lot, even though more will make sense when play begins. I'd already watched two videos that left me stymied. I also appreciate the quick start addition. Looks really fun, and I have one entomologist in my family whose best friend is an ornithologist, so that should add additional fun to the play.
It was nice seeing Elizabeth talk about the gameplay as well. I recently bought this game along with the Oceania expansion and can't wait to sit down and play it
hey Jesse! finally picked up a copy of Wingspan for myself today (grabbed a bargain in the Amazon Prime day sale). I went looking for videos and stumbled across this how to play with Elizabeth Hargrave and so, of course, absolutely had to watch! Great seeing your early collaboration videos (with hair!). think it would be great to see more like this - working with original designers, etc. ❤
My wife and I played this for the first time and four times last night. We each won twice. I was pleased by the whole experience. It didn’t take that long to get the hang of it, and compared to many other games, it was pretty straightforward. No arguments (we’ve fought over rules in many other games such as blood rage and Star Wars rebellion), because the rules are pretty self-explanatory. It also doesn’t have the sort of “nasty” actions a lot of games have where you take some action knowing it will completely mess up someone else, so it’s good fun for everyone without the tension that sometimes makes certain people not want to play a game. The artwork is beautiful, and the fun facts on the bird cards are intriguing. And, being able to play it with as many as 5 people but also by yourself is awesome.
I have only played the game once, but really loved it. I bought the expansion as a gift for the family that I played with. Unfortunately, I found out too late that they already have the expansion. I found that there may be some interest in the game from my neighbors, so I will be ordering my very own today!
Interest in bird photography. Thought the game would be fun. Bested by 10yr old granddaughter who was so excited to collect eggs, she won our inaugural game. Older sister and we, grandparents, were toasted. Nothing but smiles and so much fun after actually seeing a Hermit Thrush on a hike earlier in the day!
Wow. Amazon just delivered my Wingspan and the European expansion pack, so I went looking for videos on how to play. This game looks so beautiful and I can’t wait to get stuck in with friends. Great to have the designer’s expertise too - thank you!
This game came up on my radar after listening to the "Love To Sew" podcast. One of the podcasters talked about Wingspan being one of her and her husband's favorite new board games. Wingspan: it was the only thing I got my husband for Christmas. When he opened it, he looked at me and said he had also ordered me this game (it simply had not yet arrived). We are really appreciating this half hour tutorial to get us started (as we gaze out our backyard windows into a landscape forested by birds). ~ Eileen Rowley, Rhinebeck, NY
Thank you for the video, much appreciated. This was a family Christmas gift (a new game each Christmas). I enjoyed the explanation especially with the creator of the game, thanks Elizabeth (I, like many gamers, desire to become game creators but can't, so we're in awe of people like Elizabeth). It was good to hear that this is an engine game which builds on things you do earlier. Look forward to sitting around the table with friends and family to explore the game.
Loving Wingspan!! I'm a 'bird fan'/fanatic/love/can't get enough' and HAD to get this game. My husband and I play a variety of board games (Ticket to Ride, Tsuro, etc.) but have really enjoyed this one! Had a few 'ah hah' moments watching your video - thanks for that! Must get the European expansion next!
Wingspan is so good XD - I am glad our video helped you figure some elements out! Also - We have a gameplay with the Euro expansion. . . it is wonderful!
Wingspan has become my new favorite game for sure. I found it quite easy to understand and the bird theme sounded really appealing to me. Got the expansions as well but didn't get the chance to test them yet, gonna start with Oceania as I think it kinda spice up the gameplay a little bit more than Europe.
Really good tip here if teaching the game to very new people to gaming I've left out the bonus cards and it's gone down very well. Great video love your variety of content.
A good, easy to follow explanation. I don't understand though, why the solo/Automa mode is completely ignored and disregarded. There are many solo players yet pickings are always slim in boardgame videos. As a solo player, I ignore many boardgame channels because they ignore me. The fact that the creator of this game ignores the solo play in her own game is mystifying especially as she implies right at the start that solo play is only for sad lonely players who have no friends.
Very good instructions for starting to play. Wish I had seen it before we started learning the hard way. First attempt atg playing but my daughter and I dug through it and enjoyed it immensely
Hey Quackalope, looking for a game to play with newcomers in the boardgame community this seems a good one. Great video as always but I forgot that you had hairs back then!!!! 🤗
Thanks for the video! My husband and I are loving this game! I have a question about the Predator symbol on the "Once between turns" activation. (e.g. Black Vulture). It says "when another player's succeeds, gain 1 ..... What is meant by "succeeds?" When a another player's predator bird power is Activated?
It means that if the predator bird actually completes the predator action. Example: Barred Owl gets to look at a card from the deck and tuck it if it's under 75 cm. Your Black Vulture would gain food if the bird drawn was under 75 and tucked when the Owl was activated. If the bird drawn was over 75 cm your opponent fails to tuck and you get no food.
LOVE the game...my sister an I are hooked...I was wondering though, with the expansions (yes I bought them both) is there any reason why this game could not be played with 6 players?
Great video, enjoyed watching author explain the the game, also helpful, were the unscripted insights. The game comes with a quick start setup with game play steps. loved this about the game. Thank you.
I’m playing this solo with the Automa deck. Can you confirm if I am playing the Automa turn correctly? Again, it’s Automa’s turn. He sees the face down bird card icon which means it discards the 3 birds on display and draws a bird from the deck face down. Do I replenish the 3 birds and then discard those 3 birds and replenish again to signify end of the round?
By the way I love birds! Maybe you could issue a book with detailed information on the birds that the game carries , one that have their songs as well.
I am still not clear at which point you choose the “Play a bird option”. Also you can put a cube in a habitat area without having to put a bird in to that habitat?
A half hour video on how to play, kind of tells you everything you need to know. This game is not a casual let's get the family together and play a quick game, this is more of a commitments that most adult with diverse interests on their life can take casually,
Really would help if someone did a video of playing the actual game without the help cards. Used help cards and they didn't help. All videos I've seen have made the game seem more complicated than it needs to be
Fourth video I've started watching about this game. All appear unprepared rapid speaking waffle. A fifth was clear - and didn't like it but said why and outlined positives as well as negatives. We did a partial run through with help from an experienced gamer but videos, including this, not helpful
This is a beautiful game, but, your video camera is too far from the cards for people with vision issues to see. If you redo this, please focus in on what you are pointing to or the card you are trying to get your audience to see/read. Thank you.
Sorry, but I stopped watching this at about the ten minute mark. I know to not teach people games by reading straight out of the manual at them or by jumping straight into the mechanics before a good high-level thematic overview, and the host is doing both of those things here. These both seem like nice people, and perhaps Elizabeth was just following the other man's lead (missed his name, if he gave it), but this was a little painful to watch. I'm looking forward to playing the game when my sister's copy arrives, but Elizabeth was right that there are other very good how-to-play videos already out there, and I found one of those to watch instead. E.g., th-cam.com/video/lgDgcLI2B0U/w-d-xo.html
Hey - totally understand and some of your points are right. I asked her what she wanted the video to focus on and we choose to go through the new Quick Start guide - that removed some of my normal format.
I don't get why she intended the food tokens to be stored together in one of those little boxes. I think that it would have been more practical to have a box for each of the food types, not only to make it easier to pick a specific type of food, but also because it's not that easy to open these boxes without launching the tokens out of it. This is how I stored my tokens with the addition of the two boxes from the European expansion (also storing the nectar tokens from the Oceanian expansion). I bagged all eggs together since the difference in colors doesn't matter. By the way, close up or pop up pictures of symbols on the boards and cards would have been a bit more helpful. And also "Golden eagles can eat like sheep.", really? I didn't know that sheep are carnivores.
Too complicated for me,no game comes close to Monopoly, why that game still sells today, you don’t need to make a super complicated game for it to be fun. I bought it because I am a bird lover ,little did I know how dam hard the game is,owell. Only made for the super smart people, class racist game, sigh 😢 I am yearning for a simple game for a bird brain like me,I remember Totopoly was cool,a horse game, any others? And please don’t be wokey smart asses and mention checkers or draughts or snakes n ladders lol.😀
I thought it was too complicated too, however, I have watched three videos of 'How to Play Wingspan' and things are clicking into place now. Still haven't played a game yet... Maybe this coming weekend with my hubby. So, don't give up, invest some time in 'How to' videos first. Good luck!
Way much too complicated for my taste. A good game should not need more than 5 minutes of an explanation and a calculator at the end to determine who is the winner. Less is more! I guess this is the Go player in me talking. A simple board and black and white stones is all I need for endless fun.
She has obviously put an unbelievable amount of time, thought and love into this game. It really is something special.
That's awesome..this game has definitely made me more aware of birds around me
A neighbor gifted us Wingspan for the holidays from a bird store in California.
Thank you!

I stupidly forgot the login password. I would love any assistance you can offer me
I purchased this game for our weekly game night. I watched several videos on playing this game but this one was the most informative and can't wait to play it with everyone.
Husband got this game for his birthday and this video was so helpful in helping us get started! We are mid-to-different level board gamers and always looking for great two-player games. This one hit the spot! I am totally addicted

I love birds and TCG/ board games, I can't believe I've been missing out all this time

hey Jesse!
finally picked up a copy of Wingspan for myself today (grabbed a bargain in the Amazon Prime day sale).
Thanks for featuring Elizabeth Hargrave! Great to hear her talk about her game :)
Subscribed!
I agree :P
Interest in bird photography. Thought the game would be fun. Bested by 10yr old granddaughter who was so excited to collect eggs, she won our inaugural game. Older sister and we, grandparents, were toasted. Nothing but smiles and so much fun after actually seeing a Hermit Thrush on a hike earlier in the day!
I am a serious birder and my wife got me this game for a birthday present. Thanks for the tutorial.
Thanks for all the hard work you've put into preparing, collaborating, filming and editing this video 😊
I was glad we made it work!
Just got this game today. Watched this all the way thru, this should help. Going to try to play it with my wife tomorrow. Nice video once again Quack.
Glad I was able to share this :)
Excellent lesson for this interesting game. It's lovely to see the designer smiling! However, I found the background music distracting. Thanks!
Wow. Amazon just delivered my Wingspan and the European expansion pack, so I went looking for videos on how to play. This game looks so beautiful and I can’t wait to get stuck in with friends. Great to have the designer’s expertise too - thank you!

Stunning artwork and design!! The game is a gem!

A good, easy to follow explanation. I don't understand though, why the solo/Automa mode is completely ignored and disregarded. Excellent! Thank you for walking me through this!
Thanks, that helped a lot. I don't know where I heard about it, but I love birds, so thought it would be fun. I think I will be learning a lot! Susan
Really glad your enjoying it!
Just picked it up based on all the great reviews. Have Scythe, but wanted something to play with the kids
SO cool that you got to meet her in person and go through the game with her!
Video with the designer!! Damnnn
The 10 cards in the fast start guide are unique and are not in the appendix. Is that info available anywhere?
Does the game sold in Brazil has the same printing quality?
Why is she wearing a scarf? Is it really that cold?
Excellent, love this game thank you.
By the way I love birds! Maybe you could issue a book with detailed information on the birds that the game carries , one that have their songs as well.
I have an early addition that doesn't have the "new player". Any suggestions as to how I can aquire it?
The "quick start" was not included in my box....and we are overwhelmed since we are not big game players. Can that be purchased separately?
I am still not clear at which point you choose the “Play a bird option”. Also you can put a cube in a habitat area without having to put a bird in to
that habitat?
Thanks for the video. Can you make the next one without the background music? I struggled to hear what was being said at times when notes were loud.
Love this game! It was our family Christmas game for 2019
It is such a good one!
Awesome as always.
Thanks so much :)
Does those extra birds go back to the normal pile for normal play?
26:41 end-of-round*
Can you activate a bird power more than once? Or do you activate all powers every time you play a bird in that row?
still not sure what/how "activating" a bird means????
good overview
A half hour video on how to play, kind of tells you everything you need to know. This game is not a casual let's get the family together and play a quick game, this is more of a commitments that most adult with diverse interests on their life can take casually,
Really would help if someone did a video of playing the actual game without the help cards. Used help cards and they didn't help. All videos I've seen have made the game seem more complicated than it needs to be
the background music is distracting especially that I am trying to understand the rules of the game as a newbie
I made it 10 minutes into this video before getting totally lost and confused again. Proud of myself.
now to show us how the sideways birds work ect
If you have the expansion you might not need this video :) - however, I would point you to my gameplay with the euro expansion for how it plays!
Wait so if a bird costs 3 rodents can i play it with 6 worms instead?
I love to get this game because it is on sale but I don't have much people to play with cause pandemic.
You can play the solo modification on your own🤷🏻♀️
@@hosnakzm7730 considering it. I will see in a few days
Got it from my daughter for the family to play
Lol what's up with the rubber duckie?
Background music is way too loud, it is competing with your talking. Barely audible would be best, if you need it at all.
Depends often on the device you are using. If you are on headphones it might certainly be louder than it needs to be.
@Quackalope Unless you are an older person, who may be hard of hearing.
"shoes to feel" ?!? hahaha Jessie
Fourth video I've started watching about this game. All appear unprepared rapid speaking waffle. A fifth was clear - and didn't like it but said why and outlined positives as well as negatives. We did a partial run through with help from an experienced gamer but videos, including this, not helpful
Isn't she the lady that caused the controversy over that mini dungeon game ?
I can't wait to play this game. I hate birds.
This is a beautiful game, but, your video camera is too far from the cards for people with vision issues to see. If you redo this, please focus in on what you are pointing to or the card you are trying to get your audience to see/read. Thank you.
Second attempt. Still mumbled, interrupting each other, unprepared
could two people just actually play this game for, say, four or five turns just to show an example of game play
1 to 5
Sorry, but I stopped watching this at about the ten minute mark.
Only made for the super smart people, class racist game, sigh 😢
I am yearning for a simple game for a bird brain like me,I remember Totopoly was cool,a horse game, any others?
The majority of boardgames would probably be out of your taste then heh
