Just so you know, the average force of a rugby tackle is about 21 g forces. In the NFL, the average is 63 g forces. Three times the impact force. NFL players are faster and just as big as rugby players. Yes, at those speeds padding and helmets matter little, and you can shoulder charge as much as you want as long as you don't target the crown of the head. Also tackling below the waist (and if you think a helmet and pad tickles when it strikes unpadded knees and waists, you're wrong) and blocking potential tacklers is perfectly legal and encouraged.

NFL used to be a "tackling" sport. Back in the day the players knew how to tackle properly. Over the years the players have gotten bigger and faster and the technology in the protective gear has gotten better. As a result players have a sense of being invincible, so now very few players have developed proper tackling techniques and instead just launch themselves at an opponent to try and knock them down. The result is a lot of missed tackles and head injuries (and sometimes gruesome knee injuries!). The league has tried to reduce head injuries by enacting "targeting" penalties.
Interestingly enough, there was a study done comparing rates of injuries in American football with rugby and Australian rules football. What they found was that there was basically the same rate of injuries in general across all sports, but American football injuries tended to be more lower body (legs, knees, ankles) and rugby/ARF tended to be more upper body (head/shoulder/arm).

Rugby is a contact sport. American Football is an IMPACT sport. And yes, those leading shoulder pad hits are perfectly legal. However they have outlawed the helmet to helmet hits for concussion prevention purposes. But back in the 80s, that's probably when you had the best smash mouth football going on. As to who is the “hit man” of the NFL.
Any linebacker, safety, Db etc - that has the clear shot to lay someone out.
There are guys known as big hitters - but the whole league will send you to the locker room if given a chance.
You got guys - 6ft-6-8” - 220-350lbs - in the best shape/as strong as they can be… and fast. 320lb Lineman are running 5 sec 40’s.
Think kinetic energy. Velocity and mass ….
Why the average career is like 3-4 years.

Steve Atwater and Dennis Smith. Denver Broncos safeties in the 80s and 90s two of the hardest hitters ever. They hit so hard players have legitimately come out and admitted to take dives or refusing to catch pass just so they wouldn't get flattened by these two monsters. The Helmet and Pads and pads do NOT protect the players from the hits.
    It's the opposite.
I played Football through my Sophomore year in College (small College), and anyone who has ever played will tell you that when you put on the Helmet and Pads, you feel like a living weapon.
    It truly does weaponize you!
    You "feel" invincible.
So you are more apt to run full speed into another human being who might out weigh you by 150 pounds or more!
The hits in the NFL are massive!
I am not taking anything away from Rugby...
It's a great sport, and fun to watch.
However, there is simply no comparison.
Rugby is more side to side.
Football is Head On, straight at each other.
    Rugby is a contact Sport.
Football is a collision 💥 Sport!

Check out Chicago Bears Dick Butkus and also the best running back EVER also on the Bears in those years Walter Payton. He was a one man offense since the team wasn't great in that area then. Payton would run for huge gains but ran over or brutally hit anyone who tried to tackle him, and usually took multiple hits. If you were going to tackle him he would make you pay for it! By the way he was such a nice guy that his nickname was "Sweetness"! He died young from liver cancer but did get to play in the Super Bowl at the end of his career. Hope you can check it out sometime and see how brutal it used to be back then!

Collision tackles are only legal if you lead with your shoulder
If you lead with your helmet or if you’re “head hunting “. it’s a 15 yard penalty.

Try playing this game with no pads or helmets! We call this street ball! BTW most of these hits on this video are guys lowering the shoulder! I don't do this this instead I'll hit you square! All in one motion I'll lay on the hit lock the guy in my arms give him a lift then drive him into the ground! Also if I saw any of my friends lowering his shoulder to hit somebody I WACK him in the head and say we don't play that game, if your going hit him then hit him square. Hitting with the shoulders is a bit of a cheap shot! For sure Mike Alstott would run through these guys. You need to check out videos of Mike Alstott try dropping a shoulder on this guy and he's going to make you pay the price! My way of playing, When trying to get the ball carrier I'll tell my guys if there's a lead blocker blocking for the ball carrier in front of you. take out, remove the blocker omit the interference of the ball carrier, go through the guy because he will not be expecting that! When doing so you'll not be doing the dance with him when trying to get to the ball carrier. This will clear up the space, the lanes of the incoming team mates to make the play on the ball carrier! To most this concept was weird at first and when going out for High School football I would make my team mates do this as well! My position was middle line backer, but I'd be playing like a MOSTER BACK! During scrimmage I would rearrange my line men, my coach would be yelling at me! What are you doing? I said I got this. My plans was to stop the run game and we did, my defence coach was always scratching his head about me doing this, he said it works! We had I believe 2 of the best running backs, My game was to shut them down! One of my team mate would call this KAMIKAZI foot ball! Play football for me it always was BALLS TO THE WALLS!

    Sean Taylor
    Steve Atwater
    Bill romanowsi

    Ray lewis

These are some of the most dangerous players ever , but Lawrence Taylor is hands down the greatest defensive player ever

D1 tackle here. The pads and helmets make it worse. You think you're invincible and come out with terrible head injuries. Concussions ended my career and I'm glad I got out.

NFL is both tackle and collision. Most hits are not that violent but there's a few during every game. I remember when they started the European league of American football 🏈. Rugby players said the American players were wimps bcuz they wore pads and helmets. Those same rugby players that tried out for the new European league weren't as flippant after their first practice, most wanted to quit. They said they didn't realize the pads and helmets were used as weapons. They definitely had a new found respect for American footballers. Eventually they like all footballers got used to the big hits. Its called being in football shape, their bodies literally toughen up and quit bruising so easily.

A rugby tackle is up to 10 gs of force, an American football tackle is upwards of 25 gs. If they didn’t wear the pads no one would walk off the field.

You should be a fan of the Seattle Seahawks. Their punter is Australian. The now retired Kam Chancellor was extremely good at separating people from the football. He was quite violent indeed.

It's kinda cool hearing an aussie explaining regardless of pads it's a brutal sport. Australian rugby is by my understanding supposed to be move aggressive than European rugby. I'd like to hear ur thoughts on that. And thx for appreciating our sport.

The part we said that was like a clothes arm I think...In American football we call that a "Facemask" which is illegal now not sure about back than since it was in black and white and old school football lol. My dad said in pile ups they use to break other guys fingers and gouge their eyes. My favorite clip is still the Raiders guy pretty much suplexing the other player lol.

A lot of the hits shown probably drew penalties. The rules have changed to protect the players better. The really brutal hits came from the NFL before the 2000s.

Yeah the hits are brutal but stupid af sometimes. Head-to-head collisions because they have helmets. I love the sport. But rugby league is more accessible to the general population. Gridiron football is basically just for high school and college-aged and professional men.

This isn't all NFL. There are lots of college games and as you mentioned at least one kids' team. I know in England college sports are not a big thing. What about Australia? I always think that college football is often more brutal, maybe because the implications of a career-ending hit are not as high as for an NFL player, and also because the college players and fans are often more deeply committed to their team.

  • @bahice
    @bahice 2 ปีที่แล้ว

There is more tackling, but a shoulder block is a legitimate technique. Some of the things you aren't allowed to do, which you do see in this video, are spearing (leading with the helmet), helmet to helmet tackles, hitting a receiver while he's stretched out or up in the air catching the ball (defenseless receiver) or before the ball arrives, clotheslines or what's called a horse collar tackle, taking a man down by the back of the neck of his jersey or the pads. The refs these days are less likely to let things go as well because of a lot of recent studies on concussions. In previous decades, guys were constantly getting knocked out and concussed and a lot of brain deterioration occurred, which caused debilitating problems, memory and motor function loss, even paralysis later on, even years after their careers.

Just look up case of head trauma and all the concussions players have gotten. Not to mention numerous players who unfortunately have taken their lives. Junior Seau for example is a case to look at, watched this man play as a kid and never thought he would have taken his own life. Not trying to knock anything or bad mouth it just saying yes it's very serious and there can be risks.

  • @helmedon
    @helmedon 3 ปีที่แล้ว

A lot of those hits are no longer legal in the NFL either. Most of these are, but a lot of the blind side hits and head shots are illegal. You can shoulder charge as long as it's not to the head and not from behind. This has all been done to help mitigate concussions. It's actually a tackling sport, but a lot of guys tend to hit instead of tackle. Usually an attempted big hit leads to the runner bouncing off and gaining more yards. Guys are so big now, especially running backs, that you want good tacklers on your team. Hits are very entertaining but tackling wins games.

Just watch the Pittsburgh Steelers. They take some hits, but most of the time they are dishing the hits out to the opposing team. They are also 5 time Super Bowl Champs. Some of them are in this video dressed in black and gold. Black and gold are our team colors. Those are our Steelers at 4:41.
