The stomach area is often not very protected. The shoulder pads are basically to protect the area around the heart and lungs along with, obviously, the shoulders. What protection players have is based on position, preference, and injury history, as long as it meets league minimum. With smaller more agile players usually being less protected in general.
Flak jackets can be used to protect the ribs (primarily) and stomach area. Often by quarterbacks but is also used when coming back from an injury.

At 3:47 when he said look at that, that was a perfect form tackle. Most tackles in the NFL are with a shoulder. Some of the footage (black and white videos for example) is from earlier days where the rules weren't as defined on where and how you could tackle somebody. The primary goal is to prevent the offense from forward progress by any means necessary. Throughout the years there have been improvements in the rules and personal equipment to minimize injury, this also extends beyond the field into sports medicine on how to treat the injured in regards to head trauma. Bones break and heal but traumatic brain injuries are a slippery slope.

The padding is actually part of the problem. That hit that was "old school" was actually the toughest one on here because back then they didn't have the "armor" like today, which is why hits like that back then were extremely rare. All the padding does is allow them to go harder and faster. Thus, now, all the injury is coming for velocity and whiplash, not impact. If they removed padding and let the hits hurt a lot more, the hits would back off in speed like the old school and lots of less brain injuries.

The padding is a result of how dangerous the game was 100 years ago as there use to be multiple deaths per year from the game.
The deadliest year in American football history was 1905, with 19 reported player deaths due to injuries sustained while playing the sport.
This resulted in some rule changes. With the helmet introduced in the 1930s.

Back in the day, we could "butterfly" our shoulder pads to make the top plate sit high, but the game was softened, like basketball, to make it more friendly to non-Americans. From what I remember, British moms & dads were NOT remotely interested in considering allowing their sons to even learn the game. In fact, in the 1700's, colonizers were writing about how hard we played our ball games, then everyone partied together afterwards. It shocks me that many people around the world have no clue that America is the home of all ball sports, hockey, snow shoes, etc...😂
The games are kinda hard to watch now, simply because there are way too many penalties that are actually clean football or basketball plays. Compared to the NBA & NFL, a neighborhood pickup game would seem savage.

In reality, on most Sundays dudes are technical tacklers. They know about injuries and life-altering hits. They’ll usually take you out at the knees (like a pro). When you see THESE hits, somebody is trying to “send a message.” Or maybe justifying their salary. This isn’t “typical” but it does happen.

The goal of a tackle is to prevent a catch, dislodge the ball so you can recover, and then take down to restart play.
You also are allowed to hit off the ball of it's in the front, which is called a block.
The harder you hit your opponent the less likely they are going to want to go near your zone or have a successful catch due to fear.
Your QB should be looking where you are running and not throw it to you if youre going to get smashed or at least in a way to prevent a collision

Players at this level work on neck strength to provide more protection to the spine. In past eras, running backs usually ditched the hip and thigh protection to let the have easier movement and be sble to change direction quicker. Walter Payton was notorious forbit andtacklers tried to hit him on the hips to slow him down or even sideline him for a few gsmes. Tried. The pads vary widely, especially the shoulder pads. The linemen, who hiit on every play and usually don't raise their arms, have the biggsst pads, extending past the shoulders and up to about the ears in layers. Defendive backs and running backs are next, with less bulk so they have more range of motion to catch passes and cover receivers as needed. Everyone else has very compact shoulder pads to be able to catch snd throw. Kickers also wear the comlact pads because they rarely make contact with anybody anyway.

i played (american) football from "Pop Warner Leagues" (about 6~7 years old) up to semi-professional. padding isn't worn to protect players. it's worn to *_WEAPONIZE_* players. i played almost exclusively defensive line. i became a 192cm, 140Kg beast who was often the team executioner. it was my job to remove opposing players from the game. and even wearing over 20Kg of gear, i could still run 37m in the mid 5 second range. not terribly fast by track & field standards, but not bad for a big lineman.
    EDIT :
i forgot to mention that the gear is different depending on the position played. For example, Linemen are the bulldozers and wear heavier, more rigid padding so they can hit harder. Wide Receivers, etc usually have lighter, more flexible padding to allow them freedom of movement and high speed. the only padding that is in the abdominal area is the rare Kidney Pads. most players don't bother with those, and just go in with an al fresco abdomen. (and yes, i am simplifying a bit so this is not strictly, 100% accurate.)

There were several tackles in there that would be illegal today.
There are basically 4 things that a tackler can’t do :
    1 Trip a ball carrier
2 Grab any part of the helmet
3 Grab or pull down the back of the ball carriers jersey
4 Lead with the helmet especially if it makes helmet to helmet contact.
A receiver must be given a ‘ element of time ‘ ( Don’t ask me for a definition for that ) after catching the ball . Other than that, it’s a free for all. A ball carrier is the target and a quarterback is the gold prize for the defense.
I once heard someone say that in Rugby, there are lots of rules on tackling but no pads. I’m American/ Canadian football, there are lots of pads and few rules on tackling.
NFL football is incredibly fast. It’s really hard to tell how fast there moving but on the field it’s a blur and reaction time are lightening fast. A average person wouldn’t make it one play.
Some players are very large and extremely strong. These same guys can run 40 yards in under 5 seconds. They could run over someone or just as easily go around them before that person could react.

The armor does a lot. You don’t really see many injuries to the chest or ribs. Even though the hits are hard. The injuries come to the knees or ankles when a big 300lb guy rolls up and twists the ankle or knee during a tackle. Or the head. The helmets are very good from getting any outside injury, but it’s the banging around and sudden stop the brain does inside the skull.

You're allowed to tackle any way you want, (just grab the ankles if you want) but you just can't grab the face mask. The big hit tackles are largely for intimidation and they're very effective.
