6:09 What was that recorded on? Probably an Ampex helical scan reel to reel and (much) later transferred to VHS off an OTA broadcast. It's from the mid-late 70's. Funny that the two truly ancient clips in the video are fairly clear... they were filmed, probably 16mm.

You have to remember, some of these videos were made for standard definition televisions using video tape that tends to degrade with age. When it was filmed I'm sure it was better at the time. The black & white ones were filmed with actual film which has a lot longer storage life than video tape.

Hitting is a lot of fun.
Getting hit can also be fun. It is sort of like knowing that a good play just happened in your sport.
I nailed a guy on a blindside block, and as his teammates were helping him up, he said "i hit your mom that hard last night". ...i knew i won that collision.
Another time, same scenario, the guy i hit slaps my shoulder pad in a friendly way and says, "nice hit" with a smile. ...not sure i won that one.

I love watching people from other countries react to the brutal nature of American football.
I believe Vince Lombardi said "Football is not a contact sport, it's a collision sport - dancing is a contact sport."

Danger is American football in a nutshell. I’ve been hit like the first guy on a punt return and got 15 stitches in my chin and had a concussion. I was knocked out for 20 seconds. I watched the film.
Most of these guys got up to play in the same game. And the one that looked like he grabbed the helmet grabbed the top of the shoulder pads. Its called a horse collar. Back when it happened in the video it may have legal but it is not now nor is grabbing the face mask. And a fair amount of these are college hits.

And the Pee-wee League as you had seen.
The one at 3:38 was a 14 year old kid. It was a high school game. He just grew a lot faster than the other kids.
If you can find videos that include the sound of the hits, you'll get a real feel of what those hits do. The crack of the pads and the grunts are unreal.
That's one of the funny things about wrestling a lot of the guys were former football players NFL, college or high school. And they use some of the same moves to take opponents down.
Brady got up from that hit and continued to play excellent.

Whoever created the original video did a good job of not including many hits that resulted in injuries, that's a whole different video. As someone who grew up watching football very few of the hits in this video made me cringe or worry about the player

Great reaction man, absolutely great. It's funny you mention so many wrestling references (and you're spot on, by the way). It's no coincidence Goldberg was literally a pro football player and Roman Reigns was a great player in college. That's literally where they learned the spears from. Hahaha.

What they aren't showing is after many of the plays, the gut who was knocked down just sets back up and head back for the next play. Most of the ball carriers know they are going to get hit hard as as the second the ball arrives to them or soon after so they are actually prepared for the hit. On a side note, these players spend hours during the off and preseason in the weight rooms where they can add as much as 20 to 30 pounds of solid muscle.
Instead of NFL, this video is hardest hits in high school football so you can at least get an idea of how NFL players developed their skills.

2:18 ish, that’s called a face mask and it is highly illegal. I almost had my neck broken in high school cause someone brought me down by twisting and yanking me down at the same time by my face mask.

I find it sometimes funny how foreigners don't know that college football players go to college for free on scholarships. It's like they think there's no benefit in it at all. Especially since most students have to go into debt for most their lives to pay for it for 4 years now, and it's only rising. Highschool, middleschool, and elementary school players however have to actually pay the school to play, which was always backwards in my eyes (parents do the paying). Especially since the ages it's played in has the same sort of violence for the sizes represented. It's common for kids to get injured constantly throughout those years playing without any benefit other than hoping a college you like is willing to give a scholarship to you upon graduating. NFL scouting typically starts with players who played all the way from elementary, to college.
Edit: I also love the what is that filmed on comments they all without fail make lol. The biggest hits aren't necessarily all new hits from after 2010, but ones that have been recorded in general. Video quality from early 2000s and before might as well be black and white in technological comparison to what we're used to after 2015, and only getting better. Poor quality clips is just the reality of history.

The money the NFL players make it well worth the risk, in my opinion. Top players make $30-40 million per year. Plus, it's so fun to play! In terms of endurance, I'd say Rugby is tougher, but considering that fatigue is pretty much a non-factor in the NFL, the hits every game are brutal. And then you take into account a life time of getting hit like that, American Football is much tougher. But I respect both sports. Rugby and American Football players are some of the tallest, strongest and most athletic people in sports.
I only played 4 years of high school football and i wrecked both shoulders and knees but I will make for damn sure my son plays it too.
Is no better feeling on a friday night than to walk into a stadium and feel like your part of something great.
Most don’t end up the hospital, lots pop up after, and continue to play.

I personally think the hit @4:52, between Oregon and Stanford seemed the worst, or I guess I should say it was the one I cringed at the most, as they all would've sent me to the hospital and then likely funeral home. But for me that one stood out the most.
Pads don't get used by poor people. We still hit each other the same. This is America.

That black and white helmet grabbing one is illegal (or has been for a very long time) it is called face masking.
"Basketball" and ,as we call it, "Soccer" are contact sports. American Football is a collision sport. They are modern gladiators. 😁
One of the things about those college hits is that one of the players may have been headed to the NFL, but the other one may have been headed for a CPA.
A couple of issues:
1) The college players get a great education, the use of world class training facilities and get paid "perdium".
2) The absolute worst team in the NFL would absolutely destroy the national champion college team. They usually look more "explosive" when hitting because the guy getting leveled is way smaller. In the NFL a "small receiver" is usually the size of the "big stud" receiver on a college team.
A lot of the college players are given full scholarship meaning all their tuition books and housing is paid for. And most of the big universities cost tremendous amount of money so they are paid and given a chance to make it in the NFL and make millions
There is some good news about getting ironed out so violently that you lose consciousness... you typically don't feel anything at all. Except for migraine headaches and nausea when you come around. That bit is unpleasant.

The guy at 6:10 being recorded on what you called "crap video" was a receiver for TCU (Texas Christian University), and he was leveled by a player from Texas A&M. The TCU player's jaw was broken in 5 places as a result of that split second collision. The Texas A&M player went on to have a very successful career in the NFL.

You should check out a video where you can hear the hit. You hear that crack at the farthest seat in the stadium. I don't 5hink many of them went to the hospital but surely had an ice bath after the game. They are so muscular that they can give and take big hits.

2:26 thats my university delivering the hit. Tony Lippett is the guy making the hit. The guy he hit was Baylor's kicker after a blocked field goal. Keith Marby said what I was going to say, the wrestling "spine buster" things are nothing at all. This is where the pads and the helmets help a lot. It's those running headlong impacts that are life threatening. We had a collage player die from one a few years ago. Watch the youtube video titled simply "Tatum Stingley" for an NFL story. Also a few years ago, one team's coaches were suspended for a year because locker room recordings came out proving that the team had paid bonuses for inflicting injuries with one coach saying "Go for the head" when talking about an opposing player that was recovering from a concussion. Now THAT'S entertainment!!!
The part where the quarterback had his face mask grabbed was *very* illegal. The helmet-to-helmet shots will also get you a penalty. But most of the rest of the hits were perfectly legit.

Only 1 man has ever died during an NFL game on the field. It was not as a result of a football play, but rather a heart attack between plays.
Prior to 1906 deaths in football happened frequently enough that there was consideration of banning the sport. Rules against forward motion of the offense at to the snap were added. The offense is required to have 7 men on the line of scrimmage at the start of the play, the defense is not under this requirement. The 2 men on the end of the line must be eligible receivers. This effectively banned the flying wedge play that was causing severe injuries & deaths. They also increased the yardage required to gain in 3 downs from 5 to 10, to keep possession of the ball. A yard is a little less than a meter. The forward pass was also legalized in 1906. 4th Down was added in 1912 in the U.S., but not in Canada. Canada has their own version of Gridiron Football, similar game but with some rules that are different.
I play Division 1 at the University of South Florida I was a tight end defensive end and I was a receiver and you don't feel the hits but it happens

Most of America considers football to be a lot softer than it used to be you used to be able to do things that if you did them now you would be banned from the game for life
I would like to point out that it seems like the college players hit harder simply because they are trying their level best to become NFL players. Once they're in the NFL their game isn't quite as strong.
Every american kid has played football.
When you get to hit someone like that in a game, its almost feels as good as a organism. Please if you get a chance come to the United states in the fall and go to a couple of games, college or pro games , promise you'll be hooked Godspeed 🇺🇸🇺🇸🤝

College probably does have bigger hits for 2 reasons. One being they are younger and more wreckless and the other being the pro's are far more likely to have learned how to hit without also injuring themselves.

@@CDKE23 NFL's closest to home, rugby roots and all... No idea what your background is in other sports, but basketball and NHL hockey are the most straightforward, with a drastic leap in rules complexity to NFL and MLB Baseball. That's, of course, if you're interested in more than just the spectacle :)
As far as spectacles go it's NFL/NHL tied for first place, then baseball and basketball, and then the unusual sports like lacrosse. MLB might take first place in some eyes though for the sheer oddity of what can happen in a game, which is statistics driven. MLB runs around 2500 games a year (162 per team) so statistically if it can happen, it probably already has... on video.

@@CDKE23 hockey is incredible. They've actually expanded the league by 2 teams in the last 5 years and its still highly competitive. Much more than soccer or even American Football
I like watching college football more than the pros for this reason, It's true that the college players don't get paid for playing. Fact is , college players have to try harder to get to the NFL where the money is BIG. Like alot of things here in the US , Dues must be paid....90 % of those hits are legal, the only time it's illegal is when the yellow flag comes out. my college career ended when both of my legs were broken at the same time during a tackle. i continued on as a defensive coordinator until i graduated. it was the best time of my life. Heres the thing, Brits and Europeans need to understand we Americans can be the nicest people You'll ever meet. But, we do enjoy our violence like the NFL and NHL. This is why Japan refers to the U.S. as "The Sleeping Giant."

Hi Ciaran, to be fair, most of the hits in this video are illegal now days. They used to be legal (except for the one where the guy grabs the facemask) but now days with the concussion concerns, you are not allowed to have helmet to helmet contact, lead with the crown of your helmet or target the head and shoulder area. If you do that you could be ejected from the game at worst, and at a minimum it would be a 15 yard penalty depending on the severity of the situation.
Whille not all of these clips are from the NFL And some would be penalized. Now, the Black and White footage is from a day when rules were not as strict as they are today. Things could get brutal on the field. Not saying things are easy now. But, back in the day they actually changed rules due to one person being that extra bit more intense. Deacon Jones was one. Who just may have created the term "Sacked" His big thing was a headslap on the offensive lineman to get past him to the QB.

btw, Take a look into Ray Lewis from the Baltimore Ravens and some of his hits. and he's had some fantastic hits. Even Bill Belichick has gone on record about Ray and Ed Reed's talent and ability to screw up his game plans.
One of his best was during a game against the Denver Bronco's on an attempted Field goal. Chris McCasliter slipped back into the end zone and caught the off target kick. ran it back 108 yards for a TD but the block that Lewis made cleared the hole.
College player get paid. At a much lower rate. For example a player with a full ride scholarship at USC is getting 58k

Some of those hits wasn't even NFL they was our division 1 college league teams especially the SEC conference which is the power house of all college football especially Alabama Crimson Tide and the Auburn Tigers which hit hard as any NFL teams in my book but live for that shit here in Alabama and have the national championships to between then 2 to back that statement up LoL

its not all professional teams on the video... its also mixed in with college games.
When the helmet comes off that is the Player's Choice of not wearing his chin strap tight enough or fully done up. Damn near impossible to take somebody's helmet off if it's done up properly. Yes face masking is a penalty if it's deliberate or looks deliberate 15-yard infraction if it's accidental 5 yd in fraction. Also very few if any of those players went to the hospital you get condition for it I don't care what anybody says there's no more vicious hits than in football the bigger the stronger there faster and they're meaner. Having a 250lb maybe 300 lb physical specimen hit you when you don't see it coming anybody who played with high-level football could tell you a bunch of times when they got de-cleated. That's why I'm a very young age when you start playing football coaches are always telling you always keep your head on a swivel cuz there's a Mack truck coming down the lane and it's going to kill you if you don't as seen in the video especially with those crack-back blocks almost impossible to see him coming no better feeling then being the one delivering the crack-back block you just have to be willing to throw your body at full speed into another man I mean launching off your feet Like a Torpedo when you hit no better feeling
