- Saxophone Concert
Composed by Alexander Glazunov
Danish National Symphony Orchestra
With Valentine Michaud (saxophone)
Conducted by Vasily Petrenko
The Concerto in E flat major for alto saxophone and string orchestra, Op. 109, was written by Alexander Glazunov in 1934.
Although invented in the early 1840s, the saxophone was still fairly new and unfamiliar in Glazunov's day; it remained untouched for a long time as it was considered "middle class". However, Glazunov was enthralled by the sound of the saxophone: a new timbre in the musical world.
The work premiered in Nyköping, Sweden, on 25 November 1934, with Sigurd Raschèr, a famous German saxophonist, as soloist.
Glazunov almost certainly never heard his Saxophone Concerto publicly performed, as the first Paris performance of the work did not occur until after his death.

As a saxophonist, I always hear "oh, I love jazz" whenever I say I play the saxophone, it kind of drives me nuts. People associate saxophone exclusively with jazz, when there is a non-negligible classical and modern repertoire out there. So, thank you for playing this 😍
I think this girl can throw down on jazz too.
I like it when there is a bit of brass in music. like blues old school big band dance hall ASO, TBH i am very green when it come to Jazz, and some of it literally make my stomach churn.
The sax are one of my favorites pieces of brass.
Don't worry about it. A. K. Glazunov used to say "I love jazz" too. He didn't much like his contemporaries, modernists like Schoenberg or Shostakovitch though. I wonder if he discovered jazz during his visit to the USA in 1928? Maybe he listened to Louis Armstrong or Fletcher Henderson at a speak-easy in NYC - Alexander Konstantinovich loved his booze, that's well known. And I'm sure he fell in love with the sax via jazz big bands, hence the concerto and the quartet.
"non-negligible" that's a fun word kol
Fell in love with this piece from the first time I heard it. Wonderful performance
What music! It just fell from the sky.
Outstanding performance! Both soloist and orchestra present this work as it is - a masterpiece! In my opinion one of the most beautiful concertos all categories! Effective and in all basically variating a dense material.
The soloist shows both temperament and delicacy.
Joy!!
Wow! That sax sounds like it’s just gliding above the clouds. Just amazing! Thanks!
A concert with a Sax, that's high class and technicity
Greetings from the Haifa Symphony (Israel.) BRAVO!!! Just a fantastic performance by everyone.
The joy of sax! 😌
Bravo! Outstanding performance of an amazing work for saxophone and orchestra. We have Sigurd Rascher to thank for asking Glazonov to write a concerto for the saxophone. Strange to think that the saxophone was once a new instrument that no one took seriously. Bravo to everyone involved in this performance. Thank you.

Wow! What mouthpiece and ligature is that?
Pirate oh the caraiban on the future ?
What a souligné bd ans what a performance, thé orchestra IS struggling to follow thé level of the soloist playing😂
An Amazing saxophonist, with a beautiful sound, fine détaché and absolute interpretation and finesse for this pièce 🎉👏👏
There is almost no misplay in this version. I should maybe just mention the lips jumps on the high-E and high-F that are sometimes a little forced. But, this is my last word
