Dany wrote this song when she, along with her sisters, were at the Berklee 5-week summer program for young musicians. They had wanted to go; Ellen DeGeneres had them on her show and arranged for them to get scholarships. Only Dany was old enough, but Pau and Ale got waivers to allow them to attend. They performed a show at their school (Liceo de Monterrey; the concert is known as the Liceo concert) which was in part for their school, but according to some was also effectively an audition, which they clearly passed (even if one of their stage people didn't do so well). Anyway, fast forward, it was nearing the end of the program, and they had assignments to write a song. Dany was drawing a blank the night before it was due. She was feeling very homesick for her friends -- this was the longest they had been away from home, and she missed her friends, although her family was all there -- and this is what came out. It's one of only two songs from their first album that they play with any frequency, the other of course being Survive. It's one of the few songs where they have no backing vocals; Dany sings the entire song herself. On their tour of Mexico last year, Dany performed the entire song acoustically, with some discussion thrown in. She was briefly overcome with emotion at one point and had to briefly pause, to thunderous chants of "Dany! Dany!".
Far and away my favorite Alone performance is that one in Monterrey, where emotions overcome her. Ken Lawson just did a nice version with many morphing images of Dany, over the years, and subtitles of the Spanish conversation with the Mexico City audience. Check it out.😊

I've been a music listener for about 50 years, and I can honestly say that I've never seen a band that has made such a connection with their fanbase as these three young women have. Ale and Pau accompany with only their instruments... no harmonies or backing vocals... the blacked out solo beginning and ending with Dany alone in the spotlight is beautiful and quite fitting for this song and what it represents... Dany wrote this when the girls were at Berklee Music College (aka BMC) in Boston back in 2015 attending the summer session they offer(ed)... she got very homesick and also had a homework task to write a song... she hadn't any ideas, time was running out, and being homesick was devastating... she recorded a teary vlog about it... afterward she realized she could harness the emotions and pain she was feeling to write her song... i haven't heard what grade she got for it but many of us hope it was an A+... Dany has also stated several times that when she writes a song, it is from her heart and whatever emotions she is feeling at the time... so here we are enjoying this truly heartfelt song of loneliness and heartache... speaking of Berklee Music College, their concert at "Liceo" (basically Spanish for "learning place" or "high school") had multiple purposes... for one purpose, the story is that they needed something to submit to Berklee showing Ale's and Pau's chops and how well they played their instruments... this because both of them were less than 15 years old which is/was the age cut off for the summer program they were wanting to attend... so each of them chose a song to show off their talents... There is a great video series compiled by the Ellen Degeneres show about The Warning's time at Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA. Ellen and Target were major funders of their summer session there. Dany wrote this song there, as a class assignment, and as a reaction to her homesickness after about five weeks away from Mexico, speaking English all the time, and dealing with a completely foreign environment. It's been a staple of their shows ever since! They were 15, 13, and 10 there. I think they all channel that experience when they perform it. Your comments about "the machine" are spot on! The way the Hammond Organ sound comes in with the band after Dany sings the intro is epic. If this song had been released in the 70s, it would have been a big hit. (I'm hearing 70s rock)
The most awe inspiring thing for me about my all time favourite band (and I was 14 when the Beatles were on Ed Sullivan in 1964), is the joy you can see them almost unable to contain when they share in song the dark side of the road they're on. Their live performance of Hell You Call a Dream at the Pepsi Centre in Mexico City is perhaps the clearest example of that. Such a testament to the supreme value of the family (and extended family) support they're surrounded by.
Beautifully said about TW and their journey. I do worry about them as people , inside their musical behemoth. Many have gone through this rollercoaster ride and been destroyed. I seriously hope they make and can be happy.
It's hard to believe that this song is something like 9 years old. Dany's performance is always powerful. Her acoustic performance, last year in Monterrey, was super emotional - thousands of fans were singing along, with a vast sea of lighters and camera lights. Dany had to take a break and talk with the crowd. A few nights later, at their Pepsi Center performance, in Mexico City, over 8,000 fans sang each and every word with her. It remains a true anthem and is an incredible song, even after all these years.
This is still one of my favorite Warning songs. The Warning will be in NASHVILLE at The Basement East on Sept 28th. Right now they're in Japan getting ready to perform with BAND-MAID this coming week. Wonder if Dany and Kanami will have a guitar duel?

Sometimes from something as sad as a teenage girl who feels vulnerable and lonely but has to act as a solid rock for her younger sisters, in a strange country, in a strange culture, far from her comfort zone, comes something as beautiful as this.
I absolutely agree I think this was the first time that they were ever that far away from home and their parents... You have to keep in mind the amount of pressure they had to perform especially around other students that they are not comfortable with in that environment especially Berkeley these three sisters love each other so much and they have each other's back but for the oldest... There's even more pressure! Dany had to keep the footing in that environment for her sisters

A few good friends stuck with me, and I made new friends, but there were moments that were depressingly lonely.

Great reaction - and great points about the girls of The Warning going through childhood, adolescence, puberty while also being musicians and performers. And in the modern age of social media and worldwide reach which can bring critics from everywhere. In several interviews, the girls have mentioned how having 2 other sisters to share in this experience is so key - they are there own support group. Dany pointed out once that Ale was missing classes to record an album - in 4th grade! What other 4th grader could Ale commiserate with? Similar for the others, so I think that is yet another factor in what has made the band so tight as musicians and artists. Not sure how many other trios, even siblings, could pull it off, but its further proof DPA was meant for this.
There's a vlog by Pau, where she's putting on makeup for a night out with friends during one of their rare times they were home in Monterrey. She explains why she's doing this while recording a vlog, and pauses to mention "Yes; I _do_ have a social life..." That really hit me; both because she was excited to meet up with her friends from home, and that she also took the time to do a quick recording for their fans. Yes; doing things like putting on makeup or brushing your teeth are always times that might feel like "wasted time" - I always feel like I need to be doing something *else* more constructive when doing "basic grooming" tasks, and I suspect that was part of her motivation... but it's also the sense that they _should_ do something (even if it's trivial and simple during a quick moment) for the fan base. The fact that they have chosen - nay, dove head first into - such a difficult and "obligation filled" life style just hit me hard with that brief comment.
Eric - I hope it's not lost on you (I doubt it is) that all you are asking for is 🤟but about 90% of people are leaving full-blown comments. This is because of your genuine and insightful commentary. You are spot-on about these ladies making a personal connection with the music, and through their display of emotion and authenticity, they've hooked an entire fanbase who wishes them nothing but success. I hope you get to meet them when they hit Nashville in late September.
Your comment "The Machine doesn't care" is clearly aimed at the music/entertainment industry. I think that the Villarreal family was wary about that from the beginning. By making The Warning essentially a family business they rejected the professional "push" that may have helped make the band a success early. But they also took control of the situation. This helped protect the girls from the more unsavory and exploitational aspects of the industry. And it allowed them the artistic freedom to grow and keep playing music that they wanted to play without pressure to follow a trend or copy whatever is selling at the moment.

Great insights Eric. I’ve often wondered what it would have been like for young Ale. Can you imagine the typical Monday morning “so what did you do on the weekend” type conversations with her 12 year old schoolmates? “ Oh you know, my sisters and I opened for Def Leppard”. Or a year later, “ yah, we opened for The Killers in front of 35K people.” Who in her peer group could possibly relate to that?
Very well said. These girls were essentially forced into having jobs since they were very young kids. Of course, it's a job they totally love and most of us only dream of having. They wouldn't have it any other way...but there were still sacrifices made and I'm sure it hasn't always been easy.

Written by Dany at age15 the song is actually about being alone when she was at Berkeley School of music she was home sick and this song is what came of it. It's kind of a shame that this is an older song because I believe that this could be a hit if release of the proper time it's also a fan favorite

In Oct. 2023 they did 3 concerts in Mexico celebrating their 10 years as a band and Dany did this song acoustically while Ale and Pau took a break. In Monterrey she broke down a little and had to stop, but regained her composure pretty quickly. They are going to Japan on June 12 for 3 days and 3 shows. One of those shows is going to be with Band Maid!

15 yo Dany wrote "When I'm Alone" when the girls attended a 6-week summer session at Berklee School of Music in 2015. In the last week she had a homework assignment to write a song by herself and after fighting writer's block she wrote this masterpiece the night before it was due. It's partly about her homesickness, but also about her struggle to fit in and be understood in her classes since she was a very young latina mixed in with older English-only speakers. Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of the song is that it was written in her second language, at a time when her spoken English was still hesitant. ADD: Dany wrote this just one year after her father posted the band's cover of "Enter Sandman" on his TH-cam channel (July 2014) purely as a way to let friends and family see how they were progressing.

I'm 73 years old and been alone most of my adult life. I first heard this song performed by Dani solo on an acoustic guitar. She barely got through it and I understand why. She apparently wrote this song at 15 when she was away from home for an extended period of time. I was amazed that a 15 year old could capture so poignantly what I have often felt as adult.

Her acoustic performance, last year in Monterrey, was super emotional - thousands of fans were singing along, with a vast sea of lighters and camera lights. Dany had to take a break and talk with the crowd. A few nights later, at their Pepsi Center performance, in Mexico City, over 8,000 fans sang each and every word with her. It remains a true anthem and is an incredible song, even after all these years.
This is still one of my favorite Warning songs. The Warning will be in NASHVILLE at The Basement East on Sept 28th. Right now they're in Japan getting ready to perform with BAND-MAID this coming week. Wonder if Dany and Kanami will have a guitar duel?

Sometimes from something as sad as a teenage girl who feels vulnerable and lonely but has to act as a solid rock for her younger sisters, in a strange country, in a strange culture, far from her comfort zone, comes something as beautiful as this.
I absolutely agree I think this was the first time that they were ever that far away from home and their parents... You have to keep in mind the amount of pressure they had to perform especially around other students that they are not comfortable with in that environment especially Berkeley these three sisters love each other so much and they have each other's back but for the oldest... There's even more pressure! Dany had to keep the footing in that environment for her sisters

The Warning's "When I'm Alone" was composed by Daniela during her first time away from home. She was attending the Berklee School of Music summer program in 2015 (when she was 15 years old). Honestly, transitioning between any life phase and the next. It was incredibly isolating when I decided to get married and settle down while my friends were partying like we were still in college. And I felt even more alone when we had our first baby and realized that even my married friends had no interest in hanging out with a stay-at-home mom. A few good friends stuck with me, and I made new friends, but there were moments that were depressingly lonely.

I agree with you completely with the emotion these sisters bring out when they share their music with the rest of us, hard to keep the emotions in check. Sooo many things had to go exactly 'right' for them to succeed and be as good as they are.
I've mentioned it before, but I think it would be a real positive experience if you were able to sit down and visit with the ladies and discuss many of the things you've elaborated on as you make your way through their catalog. Great reaction - and great points about the girls of The Warning going through childhood, adolescence, puberty while also being musicians and performers. And in the modern age of social media and worldwide reach which can bring critics from everywhere. In several interviews, the girls have mentioned how having 2 other sisters to share in this experience is so key - they are there own support group. Dany pointed out once that Ale was missing classes to record an album - in 4th grade! What other 4th grader could Ale commiserate with? Similar for the others, so I think that is yet another factor in what has made the band so tight as musicians and artists. Not sure how many other trios, even siblings, could pull it off, but its further proof DPA was meant for this.
There's a vlog by Pau, where she's putting on makeup for a night out with friends during one of their rare times they were home in Monterrey. She explains why she's doing this while recording a vlog, and pauses to mention "Yes; I _do_ have a social life..." That really hit me; both because she was excited to meet up with her friends from home, and that she also took the time to do a quick recording for their fans.
Yes; doing things like putting on makeup or brushing your teeth are always times that might feel like "wasted time" - I always feel like I need to be doing something *else* more constructive when doing "basic grooming" tasks, and I suspect that was part of her motivation... but it's also the sense that they _should_ do something (even if it's trivial and simple during a quick moment) for the fan base. The fact that they have chosen - nay, dove head first into - such a difficult and "obligation filled" life style just hit me hard with that brief comment.
Eric - I hope it's not lost on you (I doubt it is) that all you are asking for is 🤟but about 90% of people are leaving full-blown comments. This is because of your genuine and insightful commentary. You are spot-on about these ladies making a personal connection with the music, and through their display of emotion and authenticity, they've hooked an entire fanbase who wishes them nothing but success. I hope you get to meet them when they hit Nashville in late September.

Your comment "The Machine doesn't care" is clearly aimed at the music/entertainment industry. I think that the Villarreal family was wary about that from the beginning. By making The Warning essentially a family business they rejected the professional "push" that may have helped make the band a success early. But they also took control of the situation. This helped protect the girls from the more unsavory and exploitational aspects of the industry. And it allowed them the artistic freedom to grow and keep playing music that they wanted to play without pressure to follow a trend or copy whatever is selling at the moment.
Impossible to watch and listen to this performance and not fall in love with Dany. Such a great person and talented artist.

One thing to point out that I haven't seen mentioned yet, and don't get noticed much. In keeping with the topic of the song. This is the only song in their catalog where there is no backing vocals/harmonies. Dany is truly "alone" singing this track.
Written 9 years ago, this song continues to be performed along with songs from their 4th album because of the deep meaning to Dany.

Great insights Eric. I’ve often wondered what it would have been like for young Ale. Can you imagine the typical Monday morning “so what did you do on the weekend” type conversations with her 12 year old schoolmates? “ Oh you know, my sisters and I opened for Def Leppard”. Or a year later, “ yah, we opened for The Killers in front of 35K people.” Who in her peer group could possibly relate to that?
Very well said. These girls were essentially forced into having jobs since they were very young kids. Of course, it's a job they totally love and most of us only dream of having. They wouldn't have it any other way...but there were still sacrifices made and I'm sure it hasn't always been easy.

With a fine power pop-rock song like this, the rhythm section here just feasts, gobbles it up, wolfs it down, etc. This is easy for Pau and Ale to play, and they have a blast just tearing through it.

Written by Dany at age15 the song is actually about being alone when she was at Berkeley School of music she was home sick and this song is what came of it. It's kind of a shame that this is an older song because I believe that this could be a hit if release of the proper time it's also a fan favorite

Nice Reaction! Love this song and Dany's guitar solo is so awesome! In Oct. 2023 they did 3 concerts in Mexico celebrating their 10 years as a band and Dany did this song acoustically while Ale and Pau took a break. In Monterrey she broke down a little and had to stop, but regained her composure pretty quickly. They are going to Japan on June 12 for 3 days and 3 shows. One of those shows is going to be with Band Maid!

15 yo Dany wrote "When I'm Alone" when the girls attended a 6-week summer session at Berklee School of Music in 2015. In the last week she had a homework assignment to write a song by herself and after fighting writer's block she wrote this masterpiece the night before it was due. It's partly about her homesickness, but also about her struggle to fit in and be understood in her classes since she was a very young latina mixed in with older English-only speakers. Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of the song is that it was written in her second language, at a time when her spoken English was still hesitant.
ADD: Dany wrote this just one year after her father posted the band's cover of "Enter Sandman" on his TH-cam channel (July 2014) purely as a way to let friends and family see how they were progressing.

the Teatro Metropolitan (Metropolitan Theater) in CDMX (Mexico City - 2240m, 7350ft) is higher in altitude than Denver, Colorado (1609m, 5280ft)! certainly higher than their home town of Monterrey, Mexico (540m, 1770ft)... this is mentioned because of the altitude and thin air... when doing strenuous activities, you need more air... the Metropolitan Theater holds like 3500 in this configuration and DPA/TW sold out both nights they played (Aug 26th and 29th)...

I'm 73 years old and been alone most of my adult life. I first heard this song performed by Dani solo on an acoustic guitar. She barely got through it and I understand why. She apparently wrote this song at 15 when she was away from home for an extended period of time. I was amazed that a 15 year old could capture so poignantly what I have often felt as adult.
