As an Infantryman I went to both schools. Air Assault I can call in a Chinook, hook up a Humvee and send it. Jump school as a Ranger, it's a combat jump in to secure an airfield/airspace. Every mission has different approaches and one school could never cover every mission. Rangers Lead the Way.
AA was the first Army school I attended after leaving the Marines. I was impressed with the instructors and the technical information we got. Physically it was just not demanding. 10 hardest days in the Army? That would be the FTX in the final phase of Ranger school in Florida. At the Airborne course, the physical demands were tough. And I loved parachuting.
I was in the 82nd MP CO back in the day and I never met anyone who joined the Army to rappel out of a helicopter. I met plenty of guys in the 82nd who joined specifically to be a paratrooper. Also, no Air Assault rappelling pay like the jump pay you get at Ft. Bragg. AATW!
Funny. I enjoyed the video. My older brother is a veteran Infantryman of the 82nd Airborne, and I am an veteran Infantryman of the 101st Air Assault. Naturally, we give each other a fair amount of shit. Duh. Brothers. One day over a beer, my brother said something to the effect of, "Swiss rappel. Aussie rappel. Fast rope. STABO - Nah! To hell with all of that. Too much to think about! Seriously, that kind of freaked me out. I prefer jumping out of the plane." I was a bit taken back by his honesty. I looked at him and said, "Hell - there's NOT ENOUGH to think about in Airborne! I need something to do. Just leaping into the thin air freaks me out!"
