Advice for Air Assault; the stupid turn around items. What I did, I had a ziploc bag where I had extra Dogs Tags, Extra Earplugs and the Memo/Letter/3x5 Emergency Card/School issued docs. Every time you get a turn around item in that ruck, stick them in that ziploc bag and put it on your REGULAR OCP (NOT THE SUMMER) TOP pocket (I'm pretty sure the WTC does left shoulder pocket for those items) and don't pull them out unless you are putting another turn around item in it. Other than that, they don't tell you that you can't take extra stuff in your Rucksack, as long as you got all the layout items, any extra items don't matter (that's how it went for me). I had one extra pair of socks, one extra field jacket and I put everything inside the wet weather bag. It rained a few times while I was there and our rucks had to be staged on the field right next to our classroom; that field would always get flooded when it rained. Get yourself some good pair of boots for the ruck march. I saw some non-combat MOS soldiers that had never done a ruck in their lives wear the steel-toe GI boots and had to drop the course because their heels were completely peeled off skin.
That's exactly what I did! Those extra items pays off when you have them accounted for. Yes it's extra weight but it's worth it! Wearing summers would be the dumbest mistake. Dudes actually failed the final 12 mile ruck even though they practically ran it because they were missing the small items! Weighs nothing but could be the difference between pass or fail.
I’m telling y’all right now. When I went through jump school. Tiger Balm and Icy hot are what saved me. To this day I still give them 100% credit for keeping my legs good
It is so funny... Those 10 days were the longest 10 days in my life.. along with the weekends. When you summarize it in this way though, it just seems short. It wasn't physically hard at all, maybe except for the 12 mile ruck. People do really fail out on Day 9 rappelling for safety violations and fatal hookup.
@@HeresTheDrill thank you. So the reason I asked. His zero day was the 15th of this month. So of course he left before that. But he says he won’t be able to leave until the 2nd of December. That just doesn’t sound right to me… and is of course way longer than the 12-13 days with travel.
I did mine with the Guard at Camp Crowder, MO. Hard 10 (11) days for sure but god damn man I miss it like nothing else. Lucked out with a great group of guys in my bay. Hardest part for me was the phase 2 written test by far. Remembering all the numbers and weights SUCKED. The hands on sling load inspection test afterwards was surprisingly the easiest part for me, I breezed on through. I guess I have a very mechanical mind. Now time to bully my younger brother in the Air Force into going lmao.

One other comment that helped me through Air Assault school, was having a sense of humor, get in the best shape of your life, PT, PT, PT and ruck, ruck, ruck - then don’t take anything serious
Well said, Sgt First Class “Saverio Guerra’s” long lost brother. I was waiting some kind of a Bob from Becker joke at the end at the expense of the AirAssulters…
When I went, we fell into a formation for the obstacle course and I wanted to be toward the front so I could go first. Then the gave the formation an about face and I ended up almost last. Bad. I touched the 2nd log from the top on the rope climb and had one no go already. With all the people ahead I ended up getting turned around and scuffed up repeatedly, between all of the rest of the obstacles. I was in great shape, but it was brutal. The full canteen in your cargo pocket all of the time and wearing the Swiss seat really add to the experience.
It is nothing but a Load Master class. You only spend 1/3rd of the time repelling. Then you have to do a 12 mile ruck march. What does a rock march have to do with repelling?
Schools not hard, just pay attention and 'play' the student. If anything, this course has been watered down. Look around yourself, at the other students, ask yourself, why can they make it and I can't? The school isn't hard. If they PAY ATTENTION and SUCK IT UP...everyone can make it. It isn't hard. Are you going to get smoked? Duh...but so is everyone else around you. Like the video says...you should be prepared, like any course. people fail because they aren't prepared. Like most other courses in the military, you do it, you pass it, you never have to do it again. Be Prepared and don't play around.
@@themindoffarv When I was stationed there, I developed a training program for the battalion. Personnel from across the unit would train, when it was possible, for the school. It is like anything else, train for it. I spent 24 pus years as a grunt and went to a lot of courses. Keys to being successful: Be ready...train for it. Not vain that you can't fail but sheer determination that you will crawl on your belly to get it and people can either help you and each other or get out of your way. Think...the pass rate is insane high. It is designed for you to succeed. It is up to you to take it. Hopefully the cadre are helpful and not full of themselves. Only school easier was airborne. I went through Air Assault School in 1985 at Schofield Barracks HI. The first day they told us look to your left and look to your right and that one or both the men standing next to will not be here at graduation due to a 50 percent failure rate. No way the school is as hard now as it was back then. The majority of the class were Grunts and no women of course.
I had to do a pre req 12 mile road march in under 3 hours to qualify for a slot. As well as pass the APFT. Though I do agree it was definitely tougher before America became pussified.
