    Full disclosure, I'm not a painter. But...I did use a single stage gloss black on a smaller item and what I found was that as I put 5 coats on it, it seemed to get better and better with every coat. The last one laid down so smooth, I didn't bother to do any paint correction.
    What I don't understand, though is, you did SO much work to get to the point of painting, but didn't fix the few little dings in the body. Hell you could have even paid a PDR guy to come out and remove those first. Now they really stick out. Anyway, glad you are happy with it. Certainly looks better than when you started and that's what counts.

    Great job for your first time.. You should be able to correct the issues by wet sanding with 400 and hit it again with another coat.
    I think as someone mentioned a better gun should minimize some of the problems you had as well. I picked up a Devilbiss FLG5 for primer and a Iwata LPH400 for my base/clear. Hoping to get some good results.. I will be spaying my mustang this summer. Original color is white and I will be spraying the same.. Should be a bit more forgiving. I plan to pull the front bumper cover off , rear lights and some of the other body moldings. Will be a lot of work, but hopefully will give good results. No matter how it comes out / the main thing is you did it yourself..and that earns respect :o).

    I like affordable ideas. I recently painted two cars in a booth made by hanging tarps in a carport. I used a box fan w/ filter to pressurize the inside. On my 1965 Dart, I used 1-part polyurethane, Interlux Brightsides. I mixed 3 part yellow w/ 1 part white for custom light yellow, which looks nice. Biggest problem was I got the bright idea to use a Wagner electric sprayer. The paint is self-leveling, so thought "should work" and give less overspray. Biggest problem was the sprayer kept leaking at the front so had to wrap w/ cloth to catch those. A few years earlier, I had painted the roof in white (instead of vinyl top), using the same Brightsides, while also painting my camping trailer. For that, I used the roll & tip method with stiff foam roller followed by foam brush to pop bubbles. Came out very smooth and required minimal sanding. I had also already painted the interior, jamb, and trunk using both rollers and sprayer. The yellow outside had orange peel and got some runs on the side. The orange peel I fixed by wet-sanding 1000 grit, then cutting compound. When sanding runs, I got into the primer a few places. But, w/ solid color and no clear-coat I easily resprayed with an air brush.
    For the other car, 1982 M-B, I bought automotive 2-part polyurethane (add reducer and hardener), ~$220 for 1 gal, using the same HVLP sprayer shown (Harbor Freight). I only had to paint half the car since I had swapped over panels from a salvage car which had been recently painted. The store matched the paint perfectly (brought in sunroof), which is a modern light grey w/ slight blue. I got about as bad orange peel as with the Brightsides. I wet sanded the next day while the paint was still soft, but had to remove a lot to get it flat. When not flat, you see shiny spots from the bottom of the orange peels. When dull all over w/ 1000 grit, you have it flat and ready for compound with a DA buffer. I had some runs, though not as bad as the Brightsides and also cut thru to primer a few places, but also touched-up w/ an air brush. I used Interlux polyurethane Pre-Kote primer on both, which sands easily. I used only 1/4 gal, so will paint our 1996 minivan next which has failed clearcoat. Already painted the top white Brightsides, using roll & tip, then sand and buff, which took care of a lot of area. I too would use automotive paint for a next time and solid color since easy to repair damage and oops when painting. Might try an older cup sprayer on the minivan, though doubt that will help w/ orange peel.

    Its looks so pretty when you paint it , then the reality of the discounted price becomes apparent when it dries . Go urethane enamel if single stage , but nothing is better than base coat /clear coat . It's worth the quality of luster

    • @williamgrissom9022
      @williamgrissom9022 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Clear coat doesn't last long in the CA sun and looks horrid if a dark color. Our 2002 doesn't show bad clearcoat, but probably only because it is silver. My black 1985 looked terrible (recently repainted). Also, very hard to repair damaged paint if a clearcoat.

    Nice job! We all aren't professional painters and for a first time attempt at single stage I think it came out good. You should save up for a much better quality spray gun, your results will definitely be much better. I'm just a hobbyist but I've been around painting cars since 1977. I still use my first paint gun, it's a devilbiss jga 602 suction feed conventional gun. Old school. Like me lol. Fun hobby but please keep wearing a GOOD quality respirator because those paints will definitely hurt if not kill you. I use what you have there.

      I have a gun like that. Is there any disadvantage to that type or advantage? I shot some rustoleum thinned with mineral sprits a few years ago. I spayed red, white , and blue. The red faded off. The blue actually pulled the old paint off under neath. The white lasted for a while. All were parked outside in a sunny area.

    I'm gonna paint my car single stage white. It's a color change so I'm gonna have to do jambs and all. But I'm gonna get a couple gallons mixed together in a big bucket so the color is uniform. And I'm gonna do it one panel at a time. I'll probably start with the roof since there's not much trim to remove and not much prep needed. The doors are gonna be the hardest. There's a lot of trim to remove. But while it's off I'm gonna paint the trim gloss black. Should look good against the white body. But anyway, good job. The car looks pretty good for a garage spray

    How's the paint holding up after a year?

  • @DaSesh
    @DaSesh ปีที่แล้ว

    the reason it came out hazy on the trunk is due to the fact the angle of your gun changes the "suction" or gravity feed of the paint which in return messes up how the air and paint atomizes so heres a tip. next time grab a spectrum or a 3m PPS cup system which allows you to spray even while upside down.
    thus keeping the material and air mixure stable in ANY angle not just perfect straight 90 degree.

    • @FIGGY65
      @FIGGY65 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kyle, are you talking real single stage high quality automotive polyurethane? I am mulling over this as we speak. I want to do the full on body work prep/prime/block and roll on my choice of color, then have it professionally sprayed with the same single stage after a year or so. It’s a vintage F150 so I’m not looking for a show car finish to begin with. Are there special considerations (if rolling single stage is feasible) to thinning for rolling?

    • @bluesparky727
      @bluesparky727 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FIGGY65 I mean yes you could buff out a rolled on paint job but it would be a lot of work if your doing single stage to save money, don’t you won’t save that much money, go on Ali express but a 20-$50 paint gun and buy some base coat and clear off of Amazon I did my 2500 Chevrolet Silverado base clear gallon of base and gallon of clear for $350 seems like a lot but it’s not now if your wanting something just so it’s one color go to your local Tractor supply,murdocks,Jax anywhere they sell tractor or farm equipment and you can get a gallon of implement single stage for about 40-50$ if you wanna try rolling it on this is where I would start put it on thick you will then need to sand it smooth and buff it from there proably starting at 600grit up to 2500grit

    There is virtually no reason these days to use Rustoleum.
    Go to Amazon and look up the Spedokote single-stage finishes. For around $100-$130, you get a TRUE acrylic urethane AND the hardner/activator. It shoots FAR better than Rustoleum (especially in those HVLP), it is much MUCH more durable than Rustoleum, it is ready-to-buff in just a day or two (it is activated, it does not "dry"), it lays far flatter, has a superior UV protection, and downright just a better value for the money.
    There are a couple other brands on Amazon also selling "budget line" paints, but the Speedokote one is the only one I have personally tried and trust me: that stuff will make you look like a hero - even with limited painting experience. It will also help you overcome some of the issues you experienced here (especially with that HF purple gun).
