  • The story of Good Lovin’ by the Young Rascals or later known as just the Rascals. Every now and again you hear a song that has so much magic, you know it’s gonna be a smash. Here's the story of this rock classic from an interview with Felix Cavaliere the lead singer and keyboardist of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band. The song explodes in the first 3 seconds and hooks you. The #1 hit story next.

Well this next song to me is a no doubt about it smash hit. from the first 3 seconds it knocks you sideways silly. Good Lovin by the Rascals. Who were first called the young rascals before changing their name. In fact when they released this song in February of 1966, they were the Young Rascals. the song went to number one in the spring of that year. The song first recorded by artist Lemme B. Good in March 1965 and written by Rudy Clark shortly after it was recorded with lyrics that were re written by R&B artists The Olympics that version went to #81 on the charts. It’s been covered a lot. It’s one of the songs that truly shaped music in arguably the greatest decade in popular music history.
Up next rock and roll hall of famer singer and keyboardist Felix Cavaliere of the original band tells the story of recording this smash hit.

In the opening comment about caring more for your car stereo than you do for your car, I can relate. Back in 1981, I had a 1970 Cutlass that was 5 different shades of green that had virtually non existent brakes. Me and a friend spray painted the car red and black. Car cost me $100. I put an $1100 Alpine stereo in it. Car looked like hell but sounded like a million bucks.

@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 It was sort of a "thrill ride" with the lousy brakes. You had to plan ahead because stopping quickly was not an option. I let my friend drive the car once. He didn't plan ahead and rear ended someone. After that, the doors wouldn't open and you had to get in and out through the windows. Ah, those were the days!!!!

Thanks for this. I've been a musician for about 65 years and Felix was my idol. I had the good fortune to meet him one day. Like the first time I saw the Rascals, it was one of those events where you think, when I get to the end I'll still cherish this memory. Felix invited me to a meet&greet and spent a great deal of time talking with me about being a New Yorker having to grow up in Cali, music stuff (he had been collaborating with one of my sons) and the other acts there. This man seems incapable of saying a bad word about anyone and it was a privilege to have met him. A very gracious guy whom I am happy to have met. Thanks again for the video.

I bought the Big Chill soundtrack as a kid, without ever seeing the movie. My mom always played a mix of country and 60s rock. When I became a disc jockey at a local radio station, I dove even deeper into that era of music. The Rascals have been a favorite since then. My eldest daughter absolutely loves The Rascals and continues to pass that music along to her kids. The 60s was definitely a great musical era; very eclectic.

They were putting out an endless stream of hits around the time I was 10 y/o -- "Good Lovin'," "It's a Beautiful Morning," "How Can I Be Sure," "Girl Like You," "People Got To Be Free," and a host of others I've probably forgotten. Of them all, my favorite was "How Can I Be Sure." How many rock bands can put out a gem in a 3/4 time signature and have such broad appeal it charts on _every chart?_ When I think of The Rascals I always think of "How Can I Be Sure" first.
When I think of the wealth of musical talent that hit the airwaves in the 60s it continues to boggle my mind. I didn't know it at the time but the 60s/early 70s had to be the most prolific decade for music in general, not just rock & roll, we've ever produced. Mostly from the US and Britain but there was a bunch worldwide back then too. An era like that we will likely never see again -- not without artificially priming the pump with crap and just calling it music.

Seats were first row, however they were across from one of the speaker towers/bank. Still a great view of the stage and The Rascals. Adam thanks for having Felix on your show. The 60’s were really magical even though I was a little young (1957 birthdate) to realize it at the time. The Rascals have recently become one of my groups as their music is timeless. Love your show and genuine enthusiasm for each guest or topic..

Do they even write happy, feel good songs like Good lovin', and Groovin' anymore? I have a '73 Dodge dart that I play songs from the same era when I drive around. It always makes me smile. "Come on over, baby step into my time machine."

If memory serves me "good lovin" was the 1st song I learned to play on my guitar. When I got to where I could play and sing it , dude it was on then !! Sure been a longtime ago , years fly by. Good pick to have on your channel professor , Felix is a certified 60's/70's rock badass.

Cavalieri a Great Singer- Excellent Keyboard! What a Fantastic drummer and a defining RockNRoll Song - it was when I was delivering papers on my bike in PDX as a 14 yr old listening to the transistor on KiSN radio, and it was also the end of innocence as my brothers went off to Vietnam from 1966-72 and didn’t all come back alive.

Rascals was one of the groups that anchored down the late 60s. Consistently good material and still music I like today. Most music from that time, I got tired of hearing a million times.
Beautiful Morning is still the best song ever ... and A Girl Like You ... whoa.

Great interview. It's good to see how many artists have shown their respect by covering "Good Lovin", but it's hard to imagine anyone ever matching the energy of the Young Rascals' version.
