  • Coming up next, one of my favorite singers ever and one of the most celebrated singer-songwriters of the past 50 years, Daryl Hall tells us the stories of many of his biggest hits. First of all, Daryl Hall and John Oates dominated the 80s with the most hits of the decade. But the #1 hit that set it all up, Rich Girl, happened in the 70s and it was a doozy. It had a swear word in it and it riled up radio pretty good. In fact Rich Girl became the first #1 hit to have bleeps in it. We also talk about several of Daryl's hits that were inspirations for Van Halen and Micheal Jackson’s two biggest hits, as well as his new record D. And the hits I Can't Go For That and you Make My Dreams, Get ready for a conversation with one of the greats next on Professor of Rock.

Hey Music Junkies, Professor of Rock , always here to celebrate the greatest artists and songs of all time, if you felt sorry for Nells Olson being married to that Witch Harriet Olson on Little House on the Prairie You’ll dig this channel of deep musical nostalgia . make sure to Subscribe below right now. to be a part of a community dedicated to the timeless music of the rock era. the stories straight from the legends….
I’m excited to bring you another episode from our series Revelations- where featured artists go deep on their greatest songs and albums. Methodical interviews on these songs with the artists you won’t find anywhere else and today is truly a vital episode. I had the honor of chatting with one of my favorite voices ever, a man who wrote or co-wrote and sang the most hits of the 80s. Mr. Dary Hall.
Today he gives us the inside scoop on their first hit Rich Girl which had by today’s standards a minor profanity with the word Bitch but that didn’t stop radio stations and censors from not playing it or taking the word out. Daryl tells us about that, he also tells us about the two hit songs that he and John Oates had in the early 80s that two other legends borrowed from heavily, In fact, Michael Jackson and Van Halen both told Daryl as much and Eddie even wanted Daryl to head up the band when David Lee Roth left. Daryl tells me his thoughts on that and then we get the story on a song that became a million-selling single without ever charting and the details of his new album D that you gotta hear. I’m excited to share this interview so let’s get into it.

DEAR MR. HALL: One of my favorite concerts, and my most bittersweet, was seeing Hall & Oates at the Indiana State Fair on Tuesday August 23, 1988. My fiancé had become my ex-fiancé after seven years together. Only 23 years-old at the time, I was heartbroken, crestfallen and very depressed over the breakup. She ended our relationship on August 20, 1988, but we had purchased tickets to the Hall & Oates concert. I have always been a fan, but Hall & Oates was my fiancé's very favorite. We decided to go together and it was the most painful experience of my young life. When they played the songs, "She's Gone", "Say It Isn't So", and others, it felt like my heart was in a vice. I held back the tears at the concert and the drive home until I dropped off my ex-fiancé at which point I burst into tears. However, this experience made me stronger and to appreciate relationships. A few years later I met the true love of my life, got married, and was never more happy. Time does heal all wounds. Thank you, Daryl, for such a wonderful, bittersweet memory.

Lauderdale where The FLA DJs were playing it. As a young teen I was immediately thrilled to sing along to this song and have the opportunity to say CUSS words. Back then people just didn’t swear like is so common now.

Thank you so much for doing this interview! I first saw Hall & Oates in the eighties when I was 16. I had a big crush on Daryl. I drew a picture of the two of them and got close enough to the stage to hand it to them. My favourite song is She's Gone. I have listened to it hundreds of times. I was fortunate enough to see Hall and Oates in concert a few times in the last 10 years before their split. Looking forward to part 2 of your interview.

I don’t know how you do it Adam, but you keep on outdoing, no, FAR outdoing yourself with these interviews! Obviously with the non stop string of big hits from the late 1970s through the entire 1980s, Daryl Hall and John Oates’ music is connected to endless memories for millions. Again, having been a nightclub DJ from the late 1970s until the mid 1990s, Daryl’s music is very much woven into my soul. I could never go wrong playing their music even well into the 1990s. It was always a crowd pleaser. I had an alternative music night that I did at our club in Bellevue, Washington with Seattle’s “The End -107.7” radio every Thursday night. Each week one of their air personalities would join me in the DJ booth as I played a lot of the music that station featured, like Screaming Trees, Toad the Wt Spricket, Smashing Pumpkins, Living Color, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jane’s Addiction, plus the local favorites Soundgarden, Nirvana, Mookie Blaylock/Pearl Jam, Mother Love Bone, The Gits, etc. Even with that playlist I would always slip in something by Daryl Hall and John Oates. Even THAT crowd ate it up!
Again, once again you have outdone yourself with this interview. I’m looking forward to the second half of it!

Hey Pro, There Was an Interview With Current Steve Miller Band's Guitarist Kenny Lee Lewis, and back in '79, he was in an obscure Blue-Eyed Soul group called Pieces, he claimed in the interview the time they came out with their album and I quote "The Blue-Eyed Soul Sound went away, Not for us, but guys like Hall & Oates, Michael McDonald and many others and Sexual acts like Adam Ant, Boy George, Prince, The Cure, Duran Duran came at the scene, when "My Sharona" by the Knack came out. That was the end of that." Uh, What Is He Talking About, Hall & Oates had a bunch of hits when the 80s came (Like the ones you mentioned in this video) And also Michael McDonald with "I Keep Forgettin" and the Doobies in 1980 with "Real Love" He sounds like he's re visioning history + Some of those acts didn't become big till the 80s and second, the Knack was on the charts same time when ballads and R&B and Yacht Rock was ruling the charts.

After the band, crew and guests all sitting down and breaking bread and usually some adult beverages. Just such a "real" feel to it. Another song that had a word changed when playing on AM Radio, compared to FM Radio that let it play through was the 1979 hit song from the Charlie Daniel’s Band called the “Devil Went Down To Georgia”. The line was, “And I told you once you Son of a Bitch, I’m the best there’s ever been.” AM Radio subbed in the word “Gun” for the word “Bitch”, where it played, “And I told you once you Son of a Gun, I’m the best there’s ever been.”

I loved that song She's Gone when I was growing up. Heck, I loved just about every Hall and Oates song that got airplay. And I wore out H2O on my car stereo when it came out...

Hall and Oates are from my area. John Oates is from North Wales Pa. He went to my High School. Way before me. But coming from a really tiny town like North Wales or Pottstown PA (like, Daryl Hall). Proves that in America you can be born anywhere and make it.

I used to live in North Wales, but grew up in Philly. Loved these guys from the early days, so many great songs, but "Fall in Philadelphia" from "Whole Oats" in 1972 is still a sentimental favorite. It also appears on "The Early Years" collection along with "Perkiomen", another cool tune with a local connection.

September 21, 1985… I was walking across campus between classes in Champaign, IL and it sounded like they were running soundchecks and testing the system at Memorial Stadium for the next day’s big Farm Aid show… and I heard that unmistakable voice singing a cappella “Every time you go away..” 🎶 .. and freshman year in college just got a whole lot better! I worked the show the no next day - 22.5 hours! - I was less than 10 feet from downstage center the entire day.. so many great performances and performers, but Daryl Hall was definitely among my personal favorites that magnificent day. Loved this interview! Great information and insight!! Thank you for your channel.🎉

Hard to pick a best song from H2O, but my favorite will always be "Some Things are Better Left Unsaid". If you ever get a chance to interview him again, it would be great to hear his thoughts on this song, as well as the Liberty Concert that H2O headlined on July 4th, 1985 (9 days before the final show at Live Aid on July 13th, 1985). That must've been some week for him! Have a good one!

Darryl and John were easily one of the acts whose hits helped form the tapestry of my single digits. They were kind of similar to REO Speedwagon for me, in that I heard their name and the songs but didn't match them up. The part regarding "Kiss on my List" inspiring "Jump" is ironic if you throw in how the Pointer Sisters single "Jump (For My Love)" also predates EVH's composition - and motivated the sisters to repackage the *Breakout* album and retitle their tune.
Periodically to 2024, I imagine others are with me when I repeat my earlier hope that Darryl and John will bury the hatchet.

I just love Dreamtime from one of Darryl's solo albums. I remember hearing it when I was very young and not knowing the artist. Thanks for the interview Darryl and Professor!
