@@petitben5240 Shame? Oh for crying out loud, don't fall for the big guilt trip. You are not your ancestors. You are here now, born free & owning nobody an apology. Yes, we can learn from our forefathers' mistakes, and need to acknowledge them honestly - but shame? Everyone lost land back in those days. They fought for resources, and it was the right of conquest. Those days are over, you can't claim right of conquest anymore, at least not legally. Annexation has happened (Israel, Crimea, Chechnya), but no right of conquest. The UK, speaking of colonizers, helped themselves to the world. There seems to be a social industry based on guilt. Trudeau seems to have a particular dose of guilt - which makes sense due to his life being one of great privilege. People tend to pick their underdogs cosmetically - hence Trudeau's tattoo. My ancestors came to eastern Canada in 1848 due to the potato famine. 1/3 of Ireland was taken in conquest by the UK, they tried to starve the rest out. While I believe even the suggestion of any 'monarchy' is disgusting to the marrow, I don't go around complaining about 'the brits' - I like them! My family lost their land in County Monaghan, and it's gone, bought by absentee landlords. Here in Canada, I own no house, no land, and the people who own my apt building are, of course, Chinese who don't even speak English. Believe me, this is NOT my land beyond my passport indicating I live here. I will die without owning property or land in Canada or Ireland. So as far as shame, no, I don't feel ashamed. There seems to be an industry of social programs based on guilt. Oh what I'd do for free university! We are not our ancestors - and they are not theirs. I absolutely care what the religious schools did to First Nations kids. I despise religion. I also care what Stalin did to Russians during WW2. I care what happened to 975k Rwandans, 500k Sudanians, Bosnia, North Koreans, etc, etc. Yes, horrible things were done to First Nations. Horrible things were done to a LOT of people. I worked 3 jobs in Toronto so I could make the rent, I put in 6 days a week while going to college & paid the loans off slowly, now I'm barely scraping middle class. I've got depression going on 40yrs now that's basically had me walking this earth as a husk of a human & I am counting the days for it to be over. 10yr old car, a one bedroom apt in a building owned by people who aren't even Canadian. That's me. First Nations can improve themselves with or without the social programs offered - I just can't sympathize anymore. They can succeed by using their preferred status to gov't jobs, they can succeed by paying fewer taxes and they are still free to hold onto every tradition they hold dear. The most important thing, to cut the violent crime down...is to loose the Liberal/NDP government..there policies are wacko..just like Trudeau..the "Great Canadian Wacko."
I used to balk at this type of comment - because of course, strict gun laws do tend to lower the rates of gun crime in other countries - none of those 'other countries' are a 1hr drive from the USA border. Bill C-21 did very little to protect Canadians. I'm a PAL holder, I don't have interest in pistols, though I used to. I'm just into rifles - and I have no problems with magazine limits in theory. Some of the people I know who still own pistols, honestly, out of 4 or 5 of them, there's a couple of them I don't believe should own pistols. I went one of their places to watch a PPV boxing event & his pistols were just lying there on the coffee table. He had no kids, luckily, but that's one of the 2 I'd second guess. C-21 makes SOME valid points - there are some rifles that are simply too dangerous to be entrusted to hunters of feral hogs, who definitely have a need. I don't think they should be prevented from using them, but having them fall into the wrong hands, it's just way, way too easy to catch a body each trigger pull. We live in a society & must protect ourselves from the lowest common denominator, so I get why our laws often don't make sense. Like Jim Jefferies said, it applies to drugs and speed limits - it's that one eejit in the group. When Metro Toronto PD lay a bunch of pistols on a table alongside drugs/cash in a bust they made, I think legal owners have a right to know EVERY TIME - where did each pistol come from? From RPAL owners who didn't lock them correctly? RPAL owners themselves or their families? Cross-border smuggle? Post office or courier, concealed in something legit? The people I fear most are bullied teenagers, the devoutly religious, weak judges, young offenders, and people who've immigrated from high-crime nations, had awful or absent parents & won't let go of the divisions & proclivities that made those places the way they are. Two things I'd change: Police of all ranks should be allowed to conceal-carry when off duty. Canada should finally make silencers/suppressors legal for hunting rifles. Even plastic baffles on hardware-store pellet guns that aren't even legally a firearm, in an effort to make them slightly less noisy, are illegal. As an adult who follows the rules, I'd like to know WHY do we draw the line there? Shouldn't the reasons be backed up by viable studies in proper context? For instance, silencers are legal all through western Europe - you can't carry a small pocket knife in most EU cities, but they actually recommend silencers. To take my 30-06 to a range, I have to drive a lot farther because of the noise - which I do, but I want to be a good neighbor, I'm not hunting Jason Bourne. Contrary to common knowledge, rifles with silencers are still VERY loud. Something that takes the edge off of that noise simply makes sense, and the high-tax, ban-everything-yukky nations of western EU even allow them. We ask for compromise, such as allowing a range officer to have one you can rent or borrow, sign it out, give it back same session. No harm done. Treat it as a restricted device. But they won't budge. We're just told "because", and to stop asking. They forget that anyone bent on poaching or something illegal, can not only get the firearm easily, but they can make their own silencers with a trip to the hardware store. The feds are actively naïve and dismissively arrogant, and I understand why people take issue with it. Life without a suppressor = boohoo, poor me, I know, but I'm following the rules & this is as sulky about it as I get. If someone wants to get a pistol, they just need to drive into Maine, go to a gun show or pawn shop, or even a range, and give someone cash for one in a private sale. I have never & never will try to sneak anything over the border back into Canada (though I have had Kinder Eggs on me), but I needn't tell anyone how easy it is, especially with a Nexus pass. 10 times at least I crossed over the US border & back again in 2023 - only once did my trunk get rummaged through. I can be checked anytime, Nexus or not - which I won't sulk about. CBSA are taking bribes from car theft rings to ensure stolen cargo is loaded onto ships, so organized crime have no problems getting whatever they want. 3D printed Glocks are getting better quality, are no longer fringe & are impossible to trace. They actually cycle through a full mag - that's scary quality. People who break those laws don't care. Fewer legally owned pistols doesn't mean fewer illegally owned pistols - it might in Norway - but we live next to, and are the biggest trade partner of, the most ridiculously gun-centric nation on the planet. My rifles are locked away properly, my ammo locked away in another room. Nobody - not my closest friends, nor my parents, nor my siblings - not one of them knows where I keep the keys and even with the keys, they'd need to the combinations to unlock the breeches.
