I too love the Remington 1863 new model army. The colts handle blackpowder fouling better and certainly look sharp. Having said that the Remington is a solid revolver and great shooter. The cylinder hand is attached to the hammer via a pin/peg in the colts but the Remington cylinder hand is attached to the hammer with a tiny screw which is a minor inconvenience IMHO when cleaning. Own both designs and they are both fun to shoot.
Lightly file a few rings onto the cylinder arbor to retain lube. This will allow you to fire several cylinders without it fouling too much. I learned this little upgrade several years ago from Blackie Thomas. It is easy to do and works. Enjoy.
Blackie is a wealth of knowledge on these cap & ball wheel guns. I have both Remington & colt revolvers & if you do the little tricks Blackie suggests to make each shoot better, you will be happy with the results, less fouling & less cap jams.
I bought my first Uberti Remington in 2014, a .36 New Model Navy. I really wanted a Colt Navy but was put off by a friend who was having cap jams with every cylinder in his .36 Colt Police, and the shots that didn't jam struck 15 inches high at 25 yards. The Remington has never had a single cap jam, broken or worn out a part over the last 10 years. The only thing I've done was shorten the barrel from 7 3/8" to 6 inches for better balance. This year, despite fancying a Colt 1860 with my heart, my head steered me to a new .44 5.5 inch Remington Sheriff model which I enjoy very much. I was a little dismayed with your earlier video saying you dislike Remingtons, I'm pleased you've changed your mind after giving them a fair chance. Regarding cylinder fouling - I put one spot of vegetable oil where the cylinder meets the frame with another spot at the front nearest the lever pivot every third cylinder. Then pull and push the cylinder pin in and out an inch or so to circulate, soften and clear hard fouling. I can run 10 + consecutive cylinders smoothly doing this.
Thanks! Like I said it wasn’t the pistols but my attitude!!! FYI.. the cap jams on the pocket police are awful and not at all like the 51 navy or 60 army. But I’m glad you love yours….
@@CapBallFanatic-gb3jb My friend's solution to prevent spent caps falling into the works between the hammer and frame was a blob of grease which helped slightly. His patience eventually ran out, sold the pistol and replaced it with a single shot percussion pistol.
I do not have an issue with the Remington revolvers, but I do have an issue with junky black powder. Now let me explain. I have always show Pyrodex out of my Cap and Ball revolvers, when I have one but never shot real black powder until this year. The stuff I shot was made from pine, and I suspect it was made from store bought 2x4’s. Worst fouling I have ever seen on a Cap & Ball, to the point it would clog up a Colt Open Top after two cylinders so badly it was hard to turn by hand. Could not get a full cylinder’s worth on a Remington, and 2024 is also my first year getting to shoot a Remington cap & ball revolver. I can shoot Pyrodex all day long, even with a Remington and never have that bad a problem with fouling. That black powder did not turn me off of the real stuff or Remington revolvers, it actually had the opposite effect.
That is a nice looking remington, i have one in black, a pietta. Really accurate but the trigger guard does smash my knuckle on recoil. I also bought a sheriffs model which for some reason doesnt smash my knuckle, so i prefer it to the longer barrel, i do prefer the longer barrel in the colts. You have a nice collection and i enjoy your videos!
I found both of my Remingtons shot a bit low for me, to the extent that I filed down the front sight a bit.... I have found them to be very accurate, and others that have tried them find that too. I have widened the rear notch a tad for my 82 year old eyes... They are different to Colts for sure... and cylinder pin lube is important.....and it's safe to load six in the Remington because those safety notches really do work. I am sure you will love your Remingtons as I do... 🙂
My first BP revolver was a Remington New Model Army. Had a spare cylinder and always wanted a conversion cylinder for it, but never got one. I’ve always liked it, but the Colt patterns will always be my favorite. Great video! Keep ‘em coming!
Nice Shootin I’d say and a nice Remington too! I’ve wanted to get one and now that I’ve seen you testing one out? Well I’ll put one on my wish list. But I do Love my Colts too! Thanks Kindly, Many Blessings and Keep on Shootin on! DaveyJO in Pennsylvania
Sometimes I do that….but mostly I enjoy the challenge of figuring it out off hand. I know that makes me crazy and a glutton for punishment but it’s what I like. Yet, sometimes I do use the bench for that purpose. It kinda depends on, I don’t know, my mood that day lol. Thanks for asking. It’s probably smarter to do the bench! Thanks for being a subscriber. I appreciate you!
Like I always say. I love my Remington NMA very accurate with it. Strange is I'm NOT a better shot than you but I started with Remingtons got accurate with Remingtons and I was accurate enough with my first Colt out of the box. I have the same complaint about the fouling on the cylinder pin too.
Like you I hate Remington revolvers. Had a .44 model back in about 1980 and it fouled something awful, jamming the cylinder after 3 reloads. Something my Colts never do, although you do get cap jams with Colts. Last year I decided to get a Pietta .36 stainless Remington and once again it jams after 2 or 3 cylinders, and the so called stainless is poor quality. A friend told me to try using Vaseline on the arbour pin but even that isn't much better, won't be able to get your 'Butter' mixture here in Spain. I'll just stick to my Navy Colt I think. BTW great video.
At least yours fires, I bought a pair of Uberti Remingtons a year or two back. Nether would bust the caps constantly ever with slixshot. I sold one converted one to cartridge and gave it to my daughter who likes cowboy guns it's Colts for me.
I actually like the Remington better than the Colts for looks and ease of use. My 5.5" Stainless 44 Pietta is my fav. of all my BP revolvers. Gotta admit though that the 1860 Colt Army is a close second.
jojoba oil and soywax works very well too. jojoba oil mimics the sperm whale oil they used in the 1800s, and you can use beeswax if you dont have soy, just depends. also theres alot of different soy waxes, depnds on your temp of your area. and pietta has bigger grips, way better than uberti.
Every time you fire you step back and square yourself to the target. To fire another shot, you step forward and turn at an angle. You will never achieve consistency in your hits because every shot is starting all over again. If memory serves me right, Colt and Remington sights are set at 50 yards.
Well I am glad you still love Colts and being smitten with Remingtons is OK I guess since you do seem to be a bit Polygamous with your Colts already😊 oh well no laws about loving more than one sixgun. Lol
I love my Remingtons, but I have them converted to 45 Colt and 38 Special, the Navy with the conversion cylinder is my favorite 38 Special pistol ;-)
That sounds great!!!! Thanks
I love the Beals/Whitney/Remington design. Strong, easy to swap cylinders, and solid rear sight.
I’m getting there!!!!

@Gupa-jw4zz yes! I hate that little screw cause I’m afraid of losing it lol! They are both terrific. Thanks
Both have their good and bad. Love them for what they are.
@marcsewell7275 no doubt!!!!!

I’ve seen that. I will definitely do that! Thanks

@jameshorne9351 blackie is the man for sure. Thanks

@85waspnest lol. Cap blow back is difficult. I get good luck with slix shot nipples. Too bad bout your friend but at least he’s still in BP! Thanks

Thanks. I do dislike the smashed knuckle. I’m left with a bump on it when I’m done lol. Thanks
My Sheriff model only bites knuckles when using 200 grain conicals over 35 grains of Pyrodex and I forget to hold it properly. 😂
@85waspnest lol. That would do it!!!!
Hahaha including the ground behind it….like that one 😂😂😂 Fantastic J !!!
Well….someday an archeologist is gonna be stumped by all the round balls at my range lol!
Haha and 6 for 6 at 50y , awesome!!!
gotta love the Remington. To me they're just a beautiful revolver. Thanks for posting and best of luck.
Thanks for watching! They are beautiful for sure!!!

You know what makes the Remington revolver even more fun? Cartridge conversion cylinders. It's a whole other ball game!
That’s what I’ve heard. I will try them someday!!!! I still like the old cap & ball. In time I’m sure
My first BP revolver was a Remington New Model Army. Had a spare cylinder and always wanted a conversion cylinder for it, but never got one. I’ve always liked it, but the Colt patterns will always be my favorite.
Great video! Keep ‘em coming!
Yea. I’m on my colts but the Remington NMA is growing on me!!!! Thanks.
Lead hitting steel music to my ears
It’s a sweet sound!!!!
The last six at 50yds were superb shots. Could you put up a diagram showing your point of aim for those six ?
Thank you Kevin! I will try to do that.
Colt guy myself.
Yup!!
Thanks Davey. As you can see I had a great time. Just need some practice cause it’s different. Have a blessed day
Very good vid.I love my Colt also !
Thank you!!!!
I'm a subscriber. I have wondered why you don't, initially, shoot a new revolver from the bench to get an idea where it shoots.
Sometimes I do that….but mostly I enjoy the challenge of figuring it out off hand. I know that makes me crazy and a glutton for punishment but it’s what I like. I just gotta practice with my REM’s. They are nice and straighter shooters for sure

Wow! That’s awful. I still agree. My 1st choice are colts.
I actually like the Remington better than the Colts for looks and ease of use. My 5.5" Stainless 44 Pietta is my fav. of all my BP revolvers. Gotta admit though that the 1860 Colt Army is a close second.
That’s terrific! It really comes down to our personal preference. Can’t go wrong with any of em!!!! Thanks

I noticed the grip size difference. It’s really noticeable. Thanks for the tips. I’ll look into jojoba oil. Never heard of ut

Thank you sir! I will certainly work on it. I think you’re correct on 50 yards.
Well I am glad you still love Colts and being smitten with Remingtons is OK I guess since you do seem to be a bit Polygamous with your Colts already😊 oh well no laws about loving more than one sixgun. Lol
Nope! I can share my love LOL
