Canon 7 Rangefinder Camera - not just a Leica alternative

  • The Canon 7 rangefinder is a classic rangefinder made by anon in the 1960s. This camera was extremely popular and loved at the time. Canon eventually pivoted to focus on SLR cameras, with good reason. Nonetheless, the 7 remained as a beautiful iteration of rangefinder cameras. It isn't extremely popular nowadays but I feel that it deserves more hype than it gets.

    Man the Canon P was my first rangefinder and the one that made me I fell in love with rangefinders in general. Had that same 35mm lens but ended up going with the Jupiter 3 50mm f2 Zeiss sonar copy. Made some of my favorite photos with that combo! The P has those same annoying lugs too. I never put a neck strap on it for that same reason!

      Haha seems like you can’t go wrong

    • @randallstewart175
      @randallstewart175 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Go for the P. The 7 and 7S changed to a more complex shutter which turns out to be a problem in a lot of cameras. It operates on higher spring pressures for the high speed shutter mechanism. The fast speeds tend to slow down and are not practically repairable: no parts; no repairmen who know how to work on them. The 7 remains usable with this problem, but you have to mentally adjust your aperture to compensate for 1/250 which is running 2/3 stop slow. Speeds from 1/125 on down seem to work okay. The P uses the same shutter mechanism as the VI and V, which is very much like the traditional Leica shutter design - easily repaired. Overall, the P is a much simpler camera, which at their current age and lack of support is a good thing.

    • @JamieMPhoto

      @@randallstewart175 That's a lot of good stuff to know, and I appreciate the advice!

    • @berkeleygang1834
      @berkeleygang1834 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JamieMPhoto I think if you want to use the Jupiter 12 35/2.8, the 7 may be the better choice. It may interfere with the light baffle inside the P. I don't have any problems with the J-12 on my 7, and Ribs shows his Canon 7 with the J-12 here as well. Proof it's a good combination. Good step up from a Zorki 4 series due to Canon's viewfinder.

    These Canon rangefinders are really great pieces of gear. I bought a L1 a while ago and really like using it - especially in combination with the 35mm Jupiter-12 :) Mostly I use Sunny 16, but as the L1 has the accessory shoe on the top plate, I just put one of the Reveni Labs lightmeters into it so I can get a quick reading when in doubt.

    Lovely camera, and like you I love the vintage Japanese take on the rangefinder camera. I use a Minolta HIMatic 7s, which doesn't have interchangeable lenses but does have a leaf shutter so it's even quieter than yours. Looking at the problem with the camera hanging at the wrong angle around your neck, if you could get an ever-ready half-case for it and fix the strap to the case, that might solve the problem.

    One way I get my Leica fix is through their SLR’s. The Leicaflex series was made before they partnered with Minolta and are just as well built as Leica rangefinders. The lenses and bodies sell for a lot less than the rangefinders because they aren’t as valuable to collectors. Makes a great opportunity to get a Leica camera for a really good price. The SL and SL2 are the best of the series, and I’d take a serious look at buying one if you want a “budget” Leica. They’re beautiful cameras!

    Get a half case for it, I have one on mine, it'll fix your strap problem as it has side lugs. That front mount I think was designed for the 50mm 0.95 as that lens is front heavy and it stops the camera pointing down when used!

    The Canon 50mm f1.4 LTM is one of the best lenses out there for a quarter of the price of any Leica lenses. And it's super sharp and beautiful. Yes a little more expensive than the soviet lenses but compared to Leica prices it's a steel, at least until people notice them and prices go up. Considered the Japanese Summilux for a good reason.

    I love my Canon 7 but agree about the strap lugs. It drives me crazy because I like to walk with a camera around my neck for miles a day and it's so annoying when it hangs sideways. I think the lugs were placed like that to balance out the massive 50mm 0.95 lens that goes with the Canon 7. I have a tiny voigtlander 35mm 2.5 and it is too light to balance it. I want to get the leather half case because it hangs better

    I have the Canon P - basically the 7 minus the meter (although it did come with a matching selenium meter that attaches to the accessory shoe - I never use it). For me, it's as beautiful and fun to use as a Leica, but about a quarter of the price. I use the Canon f2 35mm lens on it, and it's as sharp as a mofo. In fact, some used to refer to it as the "Japanese Summicron".

    I will be a minority maybe, but I like what canon did with the ltm after leica quit. And also prefer the ltm lenses, since they are not that expensive and still being made new. 2:53 they made it with the 1.2 and 0.95 50mm in mind. It is expecting a heavy lens on the front. Also worth pointing out is that you actually sometimes hold the camera by its light meter. While I am quite sure that the selenium cells are dying, having fingers in front of those bulby things around the rangefinder patch window does not help for sure :D

    There is an interesting history to both Canon and Nikon, especially after WWII. Japan was recovering and both companies tried to emulate the Leica form, just as Zorki & Fed in the old Soviet Union. All of these rangefinders used the same thread mount as the Leica III rangefinder. The occupation GIs liked Japanese cameras because they were well made, had good optics and were affordable. The real Leica and Contax cameras were mostly out of reach for most GIs.
    Canon & Nikon (and Asahi Pentax ) were all commandeered by the Imperial Army & Navy during the war and could not make consumer cameras, so even making Leica facsimiles was a welcome restart. Someone should research and write a book to complement your Canon 7. Nice topic.

      @SupperGammer 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ribsy soft is maybe even softwr than wide open, probably not enough to see on some rough grained film but every lens really handles different.
      This is due to a phenomenon called diffraction and every lense suffers from it. Newer lenses are slightly better tho, but not perfect either.
      Basically every lens has its peak performance and usually it's somewhere between f5.6 to f11 and for really old lenses it's around f8.

    Let me explain the difference between a Leica rangefinder and a Canon rangefinder. If you go to a crowded photographic event and you are wearing a Canon rangefinder, ten dudes will approach you and commend you for your "awesome piece of kit!" (whatever that means). If you attend that same event and you are wearing a Leica rangefinder, those same ten dudes will approach you and commend you for your "awesome piece of kit!" and there will ten dudes trying to figure out how to shank you and steal your Leica. Now, if you are a woman wearing either rangefinder, 1000 dudes will commend you for your "awesome piece of kit!" and there will still be 10 dudes trying to steal the Leica. This is a universal law. There is a rule here, don't wear awesome, expensive stuff unless you want to get shanked and ripped off!

Think About that? and the RENT is due. Now does that means it is the Ultimate lens to use OR to SHOW OFF??, and as for me Yea I have a Canon 7 with a Russian 50mm Jupiter 50mm f2.0 in which it is the copy of the Zeiss Sonnar Lens in which that I find that the Russian optics are just better, and a tab more contrast, and easy to scan, as the only drawback is NO Flash Shoe!, as you have to get a flash bracket, I did see that Canon did made a flash shoe bracket, but is was very Ugly Design, and also have a 35mm Sankyo 2.8 in which it is super sharp, and along with a portrait lens a 105mm Sankyo 2.5, and again Super sharp as I am happy, along with my Canon that I got another Canon RF a Canon VT with the Trigger Wind, and also a Yashica YF as it is a Leica M3 Copy, and my Prize Babies, Zeiss Jena Contax II, and III with a 50mm 2.0, 35mm Biogon, and 85mm 2.0 Sonnar.
