Shimano has always been my first choice but they've had some real hiccups lately. The Slx, Xt, Xtr hubs have been problematic too. Creaking and howling after only a few miles. Some even locking up like a fixie.
That ride could have ended up a lot worse glad you are all ok. The toll bridge looked lovely. I have to ask: You you aware of the recall when it came out a year ago? If not, were other people you ride with on Shimano cranks aware of it? It was pretty big news in cycling circles, so I would be surprised that a cyclist with a TH-cam channel was unaware. If you were aware, did you inspect the crank at that time and not see any issues? Seems quite interesting to me that an avid cyclist would miss, not feel or hear any signs of potential failure at the crank. I see you do ride in the UK, so lots of rain rides? Just asking for my own knowledge to assist other cyclists I know who predominantly ride Shimano Ultegra. I ride Campy 12 and Sram AXS, so I am not personally familiar with the issue. When I first saw a failed Ultegra crank like yours, it was 2019. Its been going on for a long time, only the formal recall and acknowledgment by Shimano is new (as of last year). Cheers, from the Philippines.
