My mother took out two credit cards in my name when I turned 18 without my knowledge and then defaulted on both. I only found out about them when I saw mail at her home with my name on it 2 years later. I called the credit company to confirm I had accounts open then told my mother she better pay those cards off or we’re going to have some problems. If she hadn’t paid those cards back, I was going to file fraud charges against her.
I lost so much respect for my mom after she did that.
And you were correct for losing respect for her.
I would have still reported her.
I did the same with my brother. Trifling. SMH.
I knew that was a risk with my mother so I made sure to tell the tax office I'm no longer a tax payer then I left the country 😁 also I'd have no problem reporting my mother to the police
l do not live in America but l feel my mother would have done this.
Call the cops and get a lawyer.
And file for divorce.

If her name was on the account, legally she did nothin wrong. It would only be a crime if she forged something to get access to the account.
Her husband's reaction is exactly why she took the money...because she knew she could and get away with it. This "mother" is selfish and lazy. She has raised this boy to be a weakling all his life...refusing to cut the cord so she could take advantage of him for as long as needed. She knew this money was there, and has been planning this for years.

Maybe there was not an inherintance account from the beginning. What if she was made to believe her husband had money, but he actually did not.

She isn't telling the whole story. In some cultures when one parent passes away the kids feel their intietold to an inheritance. Never mind that there more not be any money Except maybe the house that his mother lives in. She didn't steel any money there probably wasn't any money to begin with. She should have told where this money came from.

@@dolcebambina84 that’s what a court is for. File a charge, open a case - and let a judge decide. Both can bring evidence - and then, if she stole the money, they can force her to make restitution - force the sale of assets, cars or seize accounts.
If she didn’t steal the money, she can prove it in court, with a full forensic audit

It would be interesting to know how long his mother had access to the money and how she managed to spend it all. Maybe she just moved it over to another account in her name only? Maybe she gambled it away? Maybe this is mom’s grand plan to cause DIL to exit the marriage, allowing mom to then choose a wife for her son in his native country. There is much more to this story.

The mother did not need access to this account to deposit money. Time to get a divorce. The husband is a liar.
I used to put money in my husbands account. I wasn't on the account but I could put money in the account at the bank teller. Yet I couldn't withdraw money from his account.
That husband has abandoned his responsibility as a husband. He's also refusing that his mother take any accountability in this situation. The wife is then forced to go along with it like everything is ok. Well, she's clearly not ok. So unless they get therapy and also closure to address the issue, this will be a very unhappy marriage and ultimately one that may end. IMO.
The husband is a momma's boy. Their final advice to the girl should have been,"Call the authorities on your own and report the $300,000 theft. If your husband has a fit, no loss, your marriage is already over.
Mr. Ramsey would have asked "Where is the money?" Is it recoverable (e.g., she bought a house) or irrecoverable (e.g., she spent it on drugs and gambling)?
Something fishy about the husband. I think he and his mom are in cahoots to steal from the wife and use the money for selfish reasons because this makes absolutely no sense otherwise.

Legal theft does exist.
I suppose its how you look at it, but you can legally take (steal) stuff from other people in some cases.
Adverse possession on property is one such example. I can buy a plot of land, and say I move out of state/country for a few years, and come back, and find out someone has been living on it, or using it for some reason, they can go to court and a judge will force you to give up the land.
Its not right, but it does happen.

If the mothers name is on the account, in the eyes of the law it is just as much her money as it is the sons .
There was no mention of his mom being in the account though, she said it's "his inheritance" and he gave her access to the account. Access to the account and ownership of the account are not the same thing.
I could give anyone my bank account details, that doesn't automatically make it their account as well

My granddaughters dad stole from her. Her grandmother passed and left them all equal amounts, including dad. She was a minor, so his name was put on her account. He went through his money and then started spending hers. But it was no surprise to anyone. He has used and abused everyone's trust for years.

I heard about a similar case. One of the spouses sued the mother-in-law who stole the money and the mother-in-law was forced to repay the spouse that sued for their half.
My husband & I both come from collectivistic cultures where the elders, especially the parents & grandparents are to be honored NO MATTER WHAT. It can become a very toxic dynamic, and we both have had enough and cut ties with them not too long ago. It’s not at all easy and actually a very painful thing to do. I wonder if this is the case with this couple. Either they BOTH have the mindset to “forgive” and let it go, or cut ties, they must be on the same page together. Otherwise his mom, and probably the rest of his family will drive a big wedge between the two of them. Hopefully the husband gains some courage & sets his priorities straight.

I was wondering if it was a cultural thing. My MIL came from a different culture where you’re required to take care of your elders no matter what. She’s taken advantage of this and one son already went no contact. The only time we hear from her is if she needs money.

That is true. It may actually be very hard to prosecute her since she was given access. You can't steal something that was in your name. So she will probably be off the hook.

I can hear Dave saying, "You're so sweet." She is. IDK if the husband has been gaslighting his wife for years or if his mother has manipulated him all his life and he has no spine. He married his wife to have and to hold, not to have and to make her work the rest of her life to support his thieving mother. Whether they go into counseling or not, she needs individual counseling. His refusal to confront his mother and press charges is the END of his marriage. His mother will continue to come between them and before long, will be making all the decisions in their marriage. For all of you that say this is technically not stealing because her husband had her on the account. It is in fact stealing. If you are on an account at your work and you take money out of it for your own use and not the companies, do you think they will not prosecute you to the fullest extent of the law?
When you have someone else on the account, that mean the bank is not checking or preventing them form doing anything. It does not mean it is legal. And By the way, for a long time when I was in the Army my mom was a secondary on my account cause my bank was back home and I was living far away and I needed her to be able to take care of my banking for me.
Never once did she ever pull any stunt like this. (Of course when I got my bank accounts local to me She was not on them any longer)

You’re free to make anyone co-owner of your 300k. Put my name on that account. It’s mine too. A business account or guardianship etc etc is all different with stipulations.
It depends, if the husband is planning on leaving his wife and is doing this to avoid giving his wife her share then it could be a crime. You can't transfer assets to another person to avoid paying a judgement against you in most States and it is criminal in some of them(some others is just civil sanctions)
